Advantages of integrating adults’ alphabetization within major training and

development programs

Economical and social development are not equally distributed around

the world. Several continents, countries and regions did not take

advantage of these progresses.

Despite these progresses, social exclusion exists in almost all

countries. That is, individuals and social groups are neglected,

abandoned, and thus excluded from work market and social

policies.

Social exclusion is, “at the same time, a fact and a

feeling”

Nowadays, for an individual, to be excluded means not to be integrated and accepted

as a member of his own community

Illiteracy is considered one of the principal

determinants of exclusion: it involves one fifth of the

world population.

Adult’s and young’s’ alphabetization is a mean to promote social inclusion and should be integrated within

major training and development

programs.

Illiteracy rate is declining worldwide. In 1980, about

30% of world population was analphabet. This figure went

down to16% in 2007.

Exclusion among excluded

Women have a lower access to education services and

represent almost two thirds of illiterate population.

The integration of alphabetization strategies within development

programs is expected to increase income and occupation, as well as

other social benefits in other

sectors.

There is a proportional relationship between mothers’

education level and infant mortality. Infant mortality rate

is higher (34,9 per 1000) in mothers with only 4 years of school or less. On the other side, infant mortality rate drops to 15,1 per 1000 in

mothers with eight years of school or more.


A permanent integration of alphabetization strategies within human development programs creates a virtuous

circle, since families’ income is proportional to education level

of women. As a result, living conditions improve.

Many training programs are focused on develop specific abilities, or how to increase performance, without taking

alphabetization into account. Such an attitude limits the

opportunities for the illiterate individual to turn out a Citizen.

In these cases, the learning process fails, since it does

not provide access to knowledge, limiting personal

and professional development of the illiterate.

Learning mechanically how to do, without

understanding, prevents creativity

Training programs must be designed considering the need of trainees to consider themselves

as human beings, not just as workforce
