The new site, The Mark, addresses the individual employee’s unique needs, enabling ConocoPhillips people to connect, discover and share the latest company news and events. The Mark will be launched within business units around the globe throughout 2014.

There’s no question that it’s a great time for the oil and gas industry. The U.S. is currently producing about 25 million barrels of oil equivalent every day, more than Saudi Arabia and Russia in 2013, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

But while times are good, there are also major challenges ahead. The number of skilled trade workers has dropped from about 5 million to 4.5 million over the past decade, and that gap continues to widen as experienced people retire in large numbers.

To address ConocoPhillips’ future personnel needs, the company is seeking qualified retirees to help develop and deliver training, as well as mentor younger engineers and geoscientists. Technical Training and Development (TTD) is in the process of finalizing the Retiree Excellence Program, which has operated informally since late 2012.

“Bringing retirees back is a tremendous benefit to the company,” said Adrian Angove-Rogers, director, Engineering Training. “They know the company and the culture, and they have a wealth of knowledge to share. Rather than use outside contractors, we want to bring back heritage employees who are familiar with the company culture and understand its processes. Retirees can

share their knowledge and still have the flexibility to enjoy retirement.”

TTD would like to identify a group of geoscientists and engineers, subject matter experts (SME), who can develop and deliver technical course content. “We will need individuals with a technical background and expertise in a particular area or subject, as well as interpersonal skills and a passion for sharing knowledge,” said Angove-Rogers.

To assist in developing course content, SMEs can use internal resources or work with outside consultants to customize existing content. Another opportunity is providing technical support for the company’s new hire training programs.

“As we hire new people, we will need to provide an increased level of training, especially for early career professionals with little or no oil and gas experience,” said Angove-Rogers. “We will need resources to develop curricula for those courses.”

Although the group’s most immediate need is for course developers and instructors, plans are also in the works to provide early career employees with advisors and mentors. “Our Engineering Academy, for first year employees, graduates a class of approximately 150 each year,” said Angove-Rogers. “Having advisors or mentors to support these new

employees through the program and guide them as they get established in their careers would accelerate the individual’s growth and be of value to the company. Mentoring is also a great way for retiring employees to give back to ConocoPhillips.”

Although it’s more convenient, it’s not absolutely necessary to be based in Houston. One retiree works from his farm in Nebraska and occasionally travels to Houston. Another recently relocated to Massachusetts. “Because we’re project based, we’re very flexible,” said Angove-Rogers. “We can use technology to bridge the distance.”

Houston-based petroleum engineer Kelly Talkington was retired for 10 months before he was asked to use his expertise to develop training for early career production engineers. After thinking it over, Talkington returned to ConocoPhillips in 2012 and is now working from home 10 to 20 hours a week. “Retirement is really sweet,” said Talkington. “I wasn’t expecting this, but everything just fell into place.”

Talkington helped develop a 12-month training program taught almost completely by current ConocoPhillips SMEs. He is now working with the Angola team to coordinate training for project engineers from Sonangol, the country’s national oil company. “At the same time, we’re working to enhance the company’s image in Angola.”

Geoscientist Chip Feazel for TTD, who started consulting soon after retiring in 2010, has been teaching his “Cores and Pores” course for the Engineering Academy. “This class gives engineers a chance to get their hands on some real rock,” said Feazel. “They may work with data, but they seldom see what they’re dealing with in the reservoir. Disciplines have to understand what the others do, so it’s important to establish a common language. I help with that language. My main role is opening doors for communication.”

Talkington lists some of the added benefits to being a consultant. “I don’t have to commute, I have a flexible schedule and the money is good. There is no office politics and no setting goals for next year. I’m able to focus on projects I find interesting, and it’s a great way to stay engaged and keep your skills sharp.”

Feazel thrives on being useful to various teams in the company. “It’s rejuvenating to talk to young people who are just coming out of school, part mentoring and part classroom teaching. You can continue to have an impact on the company’s fortunes. And being in control of your own calendar is a joy.”

The future is bright for ConocoPhillips. With technical support and mentoring guidance from retiring experts, the company can ensure that the current and next generations of employees are well prepared to face the challenges ahead.

Ponca CityThe ConocoPhillips Retirees Association of greater Kay County, Oklahoma has more than 1,400 members. The group meets the second Mondays in February, July and October. A spring social is held in April and a Christmas dinner in December. During tax season, trained retirees offer free income tax preparation as a part of the AARP Tax-Aide program.
