I. POLITICAL MAP OF THE UNITED

STATESa) A political Map shows the boundaries of

countries and/or statesb) This is the political map of the United States in

1790. It shows the Mississippi River as the farthest western boundary.

c) From 1801-1861 new territories were added to the US, changing the political map.

II. THE NEW FRONTIERa) Eventually, people wanted to settle new lands.

They felt the nation needed more space. b) After 1800, pioneers began traveling beyond the

Mississippi River.c) Pioneers-people who explore and settle new

areas

III. LOUISIANA PURCHASE

a) Thomas Jefferson bought land from France to double the size of the USA.

b) He hired Lewis & Clark to explore from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Coast.

c) They brought back maps and descriptions of people and wildlife that they saw.

IV. FLORIDAa) While James Monroe

was president, there were disagreements with Spain over Florida.

b) In 1819, Spain gave ownership of Florida to the United States in the Florida Treaty.

V. TEXASa) American settlers in

Texas fought Mexico for their independence.

b) Texas was an independent republic until 1845, when it joined the United States.

b) Many American settlers traveled the Oregon Trail to live in this frontier land

c) 1846-Britain gave full ownership of Oregon to the US
