Weststar Aviation Services and Key Stakeholders Mobilize Action to Raise Public Awareness with a year-long ‘Wau Bule Selamat Sokmo’ Safety Campaign Press release Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan, 28 September 2014: Weststar Aviation Services Sdn Bhd (WASSB), alongside local oil and gas stakeholders namely Hess, Talisman Malaysia Limited and Petrofac today launched a year-long ‘Wau Bule Selamat Sokmo’ campaign. The campaign, which intends to raise grass-root level awareness and educate the surrounding community about the safety risks posed by traditional kite flying activities in restricted zones around the Kota Bharu airport comes on the back of several near- miss incidents reported earlier in the year where twine used to fly these kites was found tangled in helicopter rotors. A key issue, WASSB Domestic Operation Manager, V. Adm Datuk Jamil Osman acknowledged - the collaboration renders a decisive measure to address the issue among community members. Jamil said, “With this, we hope that the campaign will continue to run on a brisk pace and therefore help reduce the chances of any unfortunate future incidences of this nature occurring for all the aircraft operators particularly within the vicinity of Kota Bharu’s Sultan Ismail Petra Airport where we operate.” Further, Jamil pointed out, “Most importantly, this reflects the organizational values and objectives of all the stakeholders through strategic Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) applications and synergistic outfits.” While safety remains the top priority for this group of oil and gas companies in Kota Bharu, the safety campaign features a series of fun and informative initiatives aimed at both school children and villagers. The activities include dialogue sessions with local leaders, a campaign tour to eight schools in the district, a Safety Poster competition as well as a Dikir Barat competition. The poster competition saw students from eight schools in the Kota Bharu district submitting paintings on how to fly the wau safely. Winners were then selected from 30 shortlisted entries. After deliberating on the students’ artwork, the judges – led by Associate Professor Mohamad Najib Mohd Nor of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan – awarded the grand prize to Athirah Auni Bt. Mohd. Yassin from SK Semut Api. The
