Deanna Palma from Hilton, a junior this fall at the State University of New York at Geneseo, has been named an Edgar Fellow at the college, one of 41 new recipients of the honor. The college’s Honors Program is named after its founder, the late Wil-liam Edgar, Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeri-tus of Philosophy.

Students must exhibit a high level of motivation and academic accomplish-ment to be admitted to the program, which entails honors courses, research opportunities and close work with honors advisers.

Students at Lehigh University attained Dean’s List in Spring 2014. This status is granted to students who earned a scholastic average of 3.6 or better while carrying at least 12 hours of regularly graded courses. Among those named were Tyler Edwards and Malcolm Erdogan, both of Spen-cerport.

The State University of New York at Potsdam has awarded scholarships, grants and awards for the 2014-15 academic year.

This year’s recipients included: •Jennifer Adams of Hil-ton, whose major is music performance (master of music). Adams was award-ed the Helen Snell Cheel Scholarship, the SUNY Potdam Graduate Schol-arship and Warren Earle Hultberg Scholarship. •Daniel Costa of Spen-cerport, whose major is bi-ology (bachelor of science). Costa was awarded the SUNY Potsdam Freshman Scholarship. •Jordan Ott of Hilton, whose major is childhood/early childhood educa-tion. Ott was awarded the SUNY Potsdam Freshman Scholarship. •Austin Raetz of Church-ville, whose major is his-tory. Raetz was awarded the SUNY Potsdam Fresh-man Scholarship.

•Genevieve Ruhland of North Chili, whose major is music performance. Ruhland was awarded the Crane School of Music Scholarship and the SUNY Potsdam Freshman Schol-arship. •Madeline Vander-voort of Rochester, whose major is music education. Vandervoort was awarded the Helen M. Hosmer Scholarship and the SUNY Potsdam Freshman Schol-arship.

Marisa Macera of Silkwood Circle, Spen-cerport was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2014 semester at SUNY Cortland. She is an early childhood and childhood education major and 2011 graduate of Spencerport High School.

Marisa was also induct-ed into Kappa Delta Pi, an Education Honor Society.

Major General Patrick A. Murphy, The Adjutant General for the State of New York, announced the promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recogni-tion of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership. •Edward Kane from Holley, and serving with the 222nd Military Police Company, is promoted to the rank of Private First Class.•Matt Tuttle from Spen-cerport and serving with the Troop C, 2-101 Cavalry (Reconnaissance, Surveil-lance and Target Acquisi-tion) is promoted to the rank of Private.

Jesse Jones of Brock-port will be a junior member of the Mansfield University men’s cross country team for the up-coming 2014 season.

The Mountaineers return seven athletes from last year’s team that placed 10th overall at the Pennsylvania State Ath-letic Conference (PSAC) Championships.

Melissa B. Embling

Marcelina Nobrega Courtney

Emily Patterson of Spencerport made the dean’s list at Roberts Wesleyan College for the spring 2014 semester.

ESL Federal Credit Union recently appointed Marcelina Nobrega Courtney as vice presi-dent/director, branch and contact center. In her new role, Nobrega Courtney will oversee the sales and operations of the locally-owned credit union’s 20 branches as well as the company’s contact center.

Prior to her employment with ESL, Nobrega Court-ney held various positions with Chase Manhattan Bank. During her tenure with the bank, Nobrega Courtney held the posi-tion of vice president and district manager of the financial institution’s 31-branch Rochester network. Nobrega Courtney most recently served as a member of the Greece Youth Hall of Fame Com-mittee and board member, Fairport Baptist Homes. She also formerly served as president, Rochester Portuguese American As-sociation and was a board member of the United Way of Greater Rochester and its governance committee.

Nobrega Courtney has two daughters. She and her husband reside in Hilton.

ESL Federal Credit Union appointed Me-lissa B. Embling as manager, branch center district, Eastside. In her new role, Embling will be responsible for operational processes as well as the recruitment, management and retention of the lo-cally-owned credit union’s Eastside branch staff.

A 35-year veteran of the banking industry, Embling was previously employed with HSBC Bank, U.S.A., N.A., where she held sev-eral senior management positions. Most recently she served as vice presi-dent and senior manager of the bank’s risk and com-pliance business office.

Film is GCC student’s honors project Romantic comedy to be screened at Buffalo Dreams Film Festival and area venues

Rhonda Parker has been making filmssince she was a teen-ager, but much of her life is invested in a full-length feature she’s just completed as part of an Honors Program project at Genesee Community College. The movie, “Friends Don’t Let Friends - Date Friends” will debut at a VIP dinner and a movie night at the Bald Eagle Bistro, 1033 South Lakeland Beach Road in Kendall on Friday, November 7, at 7 p.m. Seating is limited to 50. Presale tickets are $25, $30 at the door (if available). Tickets are available on the movie’s web-site, www.friendsdontletfriendsdatefriends.com, where a trailer of the romantic comedy can be viewed.

Parker is a paralegal and communications/media arts stu-dent at GCC. She expects to graduate in Decembe. Besides being an Honors Program student, she’s been a blogger for the College and also won an essay contest sponsored by The Historical Society of the New York Courts, about which Professor Charles Scruggs said, “Her acerbic wit, frequent-ly on display in class, is used to good effect in her written work.”

That wit is evident in “Friends...” which Parker describes as a “highly fictionalized account of actual events.” The main character, played by former GCC student Amelia Fa-vata of Canandaigua, is a version of Parker herself. “It’s a very timeless story based on people I hung out with in my youth. It’s been in my head for 20 years. I started writing it 15 years ago and have revised it several times. Seven years ago it went through a peer review on [Francis Ford Coppo-la’s] Zoetrope.com.” So far, test audiences have enjoyed it. “One friend said of the film ‘I had forgotten...that’s what it feels like to fall in love.’”

GCC Video/Telecommunications Director Barry Chow, with whom Parker completed an independent study, is sponsoring a show in the Stuart Steiner Theatre at GCC on Sunday, November 9, at 2:45 pm with a reception to follow. General admission is $8; students and seniors, $6.
