POLITICS – I-PHONES & BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Summer is coming to an end with cooler weather on the way. Students are back in school and the political season is beginning to heat up. And, new technology is the talk of the town as Apple may help grow the US GDP (Gross Domestic Product) with sales of its newest cellular phones.

Last month, Hurricane Isaac had all the news stations broadcasting with round the clock coverage. As luck would have it, our cover story was on the Meteorologists who we watched every day. Who knew? In the end, South Florida dodged another Hurricane threat and the Gulf Coast actually fared better than expected.

One nuisance we may not be able to avoid is the barrage of political ads coming after the Republican and Democratic Conventions. I must admit, I watched both conventions. Some speakers were impressive, while others actually disappointed. None really “made my day!” Neither gathering actually moved me to think this election cycle will be much different from those in the past. All I could ask is – What next?

For those who can get past the negativity of the campaigns, there are the Presidential Debates. Three are scheduled this month – one here in South Florida at Lynn University - along with one Vice Presidential Debate.

With recent world events increasing security concerns in addition to our current economic conditions domestically, both campaigns may fi nally be right when they profess – this may be the most important election of our lifetime! Therefore, be informed and vote with the best information available. Let’s pray for some divine intervention that the most prepared

and qualifi ed people actually win.Speaking of winning, Steve Jobs

must be beaming with pride from above, as Apple releases the new I-Phone 5. Sales are projected to be in the hundreds of millions within months. This product is so “hot” it is expected to improve US GDP by one percent on its own. This type of technology and innovation is just what our economy needs to be the catalyst for recovery.

This month’s feature story is on Breast Cancer Awareness. Many of us are touched in one way or another, whether we know someone affected or if we ourselves are fi ghting. This is a cause which needs to be magnifi ed, making people aware of the many programs and procedures to provide a better quality of life. You will meet several doctors who are leading the way in medical advances, early detection techniques and treatments. These physicians are some of the best, who are right here in South Florida. CC Scott wrote, “The human spirit

is stronger than anything that can happen to it.” May this be the mantra for those with the courage to face these challenges and the charge for those blessed with the talent and intelligence to pursue a cure!

It’s the fi rst month of the last quarter of the year. I hope you are on track to achieve all you’ve set out for yourself in the beginning of the year. If not, remember, “today is the fi rst day of the rest of your life.” You have been given the chance to get up, so you are given the challenge to never give up. Take Action! And, Make Each Day Count!

Have a Great Month and a Happy Halloween!

As Always, Enjoy the Lifestyle!™

Nasolabial folds before. After 2 mL of Perlane-L Individual results may vary.

THE PATIENT AND ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS A RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR PAYMENT FOR ANY OTHER SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT THAT IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE FREE, DISCOUNTED FEE, OR REDUCED FEE SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

The Restylane® Injectable Gel and Perlane® Injectable Gel you know and trust are combined with a local anesthetic (lidocaine) to help reduce discomfort.a

a In clinical studies evaluating the Restylane family of products, Restylane-L® and Perlane-L® demonstrated less discomfort at injection and up to one hour later compared to Restylane and Perlane, respectively.

The Restylane family of products includes Restylane®, Restylane-L®, Perlane®, and Perlane-L®. These products can be used to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane may also be used for lip enhancement in patients over 21 years. Ask your doctor which is right for you.Important Safety Considerations for the Restylane family of productsProducts in the Restylane family should not be used by people with previous bad allergies, particularly to microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria, or by people with serious allergies to drugs that have previously required in-hospital treatment. These products should not be used by people with bleeding disorders. Products should not be injected anywhere except the skin, just under the skin (Perlane and Perlane-L only), or in the lips (Restylane only). Restylane-L and Perlane-L should not be used by anyone with a known allergy to lidocaine.Use at the site of skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infection should be postponed until healing is complete. In these instances, product use could delay healing or make your skin problems worse. After treatment, you might

have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or tenderness. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days in nasolabial folds and less than 14 days in lips. Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years. Rarely, the doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin. Although rare, red or swollen small bumps may occur. If you have had facial cold sores before, an injection can cause an outbreak. To avoid bruising and bleeding, you should not use the products if you have recently used drugs that thin your blood or prevent clotting. Products should not be used during pregnancy, when breastfeeding, or in patients under 18 years for nasolabial folds.Treatment volume should be limited to 6.0 mL in wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, and limited to 1.5 mL per lip (Restylane only), as greater amounts significantly increase moderate and severe injection site reactions. The safety or effectiveness of treatment in areas other than nasolabial folds and lips (Restylane only) has not been established in controlled clinical studies. The Restylane family of products is available only through a licensed practitioner. Complete product and safety information is available at www.RestylaneUSA.com.

Spider webs on chandeliers, people hanging from the rafters, freaky clown heads that talk, animated scarecrows, bats, life-sized stuffed dummies, baby werewolves, and zombies – you name it and you can fi nd it online. Use these and other grotesque decorations to bring your house and yard alive with the Halloween holiday spirit. Websites such as thehorrordome.com and halloweenasylum.com make it easy.

If you’re not into the weird and bloody-type decorations try getting into the spirit of fall and Halloween by checking out Martha Stewart (marthastewart.com) online. S Let’s face it, most men love power tools and now they, and their spouses, can unleash the fury of power tools on their pumpkins to make the most extreme Jack O’ Lantern on the block. Even the kids can join in the “fun.”

DREMEL 764-04 CORDLESS PUMPKIN CARVING KIT

Check out the Dremel 764-04 Cordless Pumpkin Carving kit. As stated on the Dremel website: “the Pumpkin Carving Kit allows fast, easy carving of spectacularly sculpted pumpkins. Using the templates provided (or one of the thousands of pre-made templates available on the market), the Pumpkin Carving Kit makes carving intricate pumpkin designs as easy as tracing a drawing.”The features on the Dremel Cordless carver include: light weight and easily handled; cordless convenience; AA batteries to eliminate batter charging (not included); ten bonus carving templates; two speeds, 6,000 and 12,000 RPM for superior power; and a two year warranty. Accessories include: 191 high speed cutter, 6.0V Dremel alkaline cordless rotary tool and wrench.

PUMPKIN MASTER’S POWER

POKER AND SAW

But that’s not the only tool you’ll need to create the most distinctive and radical Jack O’ Lantern. Try the Pumpkin Master’s Power Poker and Saw. It is the newest and quickest way to carve your pumpkin. This tool includes a battery operated saw with a replaceable saw attachment and a replaceable poker attachment, which makes carving a pumpkin like running a hot knife through butter. Requires 4 AA batteries (not included).

PUMPKIN GUTTER

And for the fi nale, don’t forget this pumpkin “gutter” drill attachment, created to help with the gooey mess inside the pumpkin. Just insert the

attachment’s shaft into your drill chuck, just like a drill bit. Have a helper hold the pumpkin steady, then turn on your drill, and the attachment will loosen and grip the pumpkin goo making it easy to remove from the pumpkin. It’s also great for shaving down the inside of the pumpkin wall, which should be about ½ inch for carving.

QUICK BURST EXERCISES Recent research has found that quick bursts of

exercise combined with less aggressive exercise enhances muscle and relieves stress just as well as longer periods of more leisurely exercise. For example, if biking or walking on a treadmill commit to one minute bursts of intense walking or biking followed by one minute intervals of less strenuous walking or biking. You can even use some intervals for rest if you need to catch your breath. This actually cuts the amount of time required to exercise and the amount of exercise itself – and you can achieve better results! Remember to start slowly and check with your doctor if you have any doubts about your health.

HEALTHY MAC AND CHEESEThat’s right, most Mac and Cheese meals are full of

sodium and saturated fats, but you can create a creamy delicious meal that’s much healthier. And guess what – you won’t taste the vegetables in this dish!

INGREDIENTS4 cups cubed peeled butternut squash (about 1 1/2 pound squash)4 cups of low- fat milk2 teaspoons of kosher salt1 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper9 ounces of cheddar cheese1/4 cup fi nely grated fresh Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese1 pound uncooked favorite pasta1 head of caulifl ower fi nely chopped

INSTRUCTIONSPreheat oven to 375 degrees.Combine the squash, and milk, in a medium

saucepan. Bring it to a boil over medium-high heat, being careful not to scorch the milk. Reduce heat to medium, and simmer until squash is tender when pierced with a fork, about 25 minutes. Remove from heat.

Blend the milk and squash until it’s smooth. While it’s still hot, add in the 9 ounces of cheese.

A HEALTHY, QUICK BREAKFAST Tired of trying to get ready for work and school and

prepare a healthy breakfast for you and your kids? Well here’s one solution – breakfast bars. Not all breakfast bars are created equal; some are fi lled with sugars and lots of empty calories. So try these healthy bars and feel better every morning.

ADVANCES IN BREAST CANCER TECHNOLOGY &

There is more hope headed our way in Broward County! There are signifi cant and exciting advances in breast cancer technology and treatments at our local

hospitals and healthcare facilities. These advances, along with women performing self exams, have made an impact in the decline of breast cancer mortality rates over the last ten years. Survivorship and new treatment options are worthy of a real celebration here in South Florida.

Dr. David Robinson of University Hospital & Medical Center in Coral Springs says, “There are still social awareness issues when it comes to breast cancers even with all the wonderful work being done by a variety of organizations. If followed, The American Cancer Society’s guidelines for early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully.” Diagnosing earlier before symptoms occur through screening, cancers are more likely to be smaller and confi ned to the breast. The size of a cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the prognosis of a person with the disease.

Additionally, most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year. More lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests. Furthermore, genetic testing is available to help women determine if family history suggests a pattern for certain cancers.

Dr. Robinson states, “Advances in genetic testing have become very valuable to patients who have multiple family members under the age of menopause who have been diagnosed with cancer.” Specifi c genetic tests such as the BRCA-I or BRCA-II are appropriate to offer a patient for early detection when the risk factors are present. These test names stand for breast

cancer susceptibility GENE 1 and breast

cancer susceptibility GENE 2. “With these

tests, we have learned that a woman’s risk of developing

breast cancer is greatly increased if she inherits this gene mutation.” Men with these mutations also have an increased risk of breast cancer. Dr. Robinson shares, “This genetic test is no longer only a blood test. Now we can simply swab the inside lining of the cheek and send the sample to the lab.” Genetic counseling is recommended before and after these types of tests are performed and there are a variety of options available to help a person manage their cancer risk.

An additional genetic test called the Oncotype DX is noninvasive and performed on a small amount of the tissue removed during the original surgery lumpectomy, mastectomy, or core biopsy. Results provide the patient and their doctors more information about their specifi c tumor and allow them to devise a better treatment plan. This test provides information to assist in decisions whether or not to make chemotherapy part of their treatment plan and can also help doctors determine the likelihood of the cancer returning in the future, also known as recurrence.

breast tissue.

This is especially

positive because

administering

localized radiation

treatments,

areas specifi cally,

helps reduce the

amount of radiation

received.”

As you probably are aware, there are specific protocols used to fight cancer. The most common procedures to treat breast cancer are radiation and chemotherapy. Advancements in these therapies have fewer side effects on patients experiencing the treatments now, more than ever before. Chemotherapy has more severe side effects than radiation. This is because all the cells in the body may be affected by the drug being used.

Radiation, on the other hand, is a therapy targeting only specifi c areas of the body affected by cancerous cell growth.

Dr. Nicholas Tranakas of Broward Health Medical Center enthusiastically

says, “Current s c r e e n i n g technologies can catch breast cancer much earlier than a decade ago. Early treatment can preserve more of a patient’s lymph nodes and breast tissue. This is especially positive because

administering localized radiation treatments, targeting affected areas specifi cally, helps reduce the amount of radiation received.” This is key as it shortens the duration of treatment, from over six weeks to two hours per day for as little as fi ve days.

“Even more invasive cancers are showing promising results when treated with localized radiation.”

Broward Health has more hope to deliver.

Dr. Tranakas shares, “I am very optimistic about a new vaccine showing incredible promise!” He explains that a patient in her 30s who had a large, aggressive cancer received the vaccine, “and the cancer literally melted away!” Broward Health is one of only seven centers in the United States to participate in an international trial of this vaccine.

Holy Cross Hospital, celebrating its

50th anniversary in January 2013, will soon be offering selected breast cancer patients a new type of radiation treatment.

It is called INTRABEAM Radiotherapy. This type of treatment is very exciting Dr. Joseph J. Casey explains. “The radiation is delivered in the lumpectomy cavity before the surgical wound is closed. This allows the radiation dose to be delivered to the tissue where it is most needed.” After the radiation, the wound can be closed to give the best cosmetic result. Dr. Casey also explains, “For many patients the single dose in surgery may be the only radiation required. In others it can shorten the course of the radiation treatments considerably while maximizing the effectiveness.” While not every patient will be a good candidate for INTRABEAM, the oncology team will review each case for appropriateness to optimize results. “This is a truly signifi cant and exciting advance in the effort to minimize the side effects and complications of breast cancer treatment while at the same time personalizing and strengthening the treatment impact,” says Dr. Casey.

“Compared to twenty years ago, the picture has dramatically changed in a positive direction,” says Dr. Indrek Miidla of University Hospital & Medical Center in Coral Springs.

A test that is used when patients have something suspicious present in an MRI is called the Positron emission mammography (PEM). This is a form of positron emission tomography (PET) that uses a high-resolution, mini-camera detection technology for imaging the breast. The camera is used to provide a higher resolution image of a limited section of the body and allows for the detection of much smaller lesions, thus creating images that are more easily compared to mammography, since they are acquired in the same position.

“The future is in research, specifi cally in molecular gene technology,” says Dr. Miidla. In university settings, research in this area studies the structure and function of genes at a molecular level. The fi eld studies how the genes are transferred from generation to generation. The future is in studying, learning and determining if scientist can identify a way to fi ne tune the different cancer cells behavior. “Denial is still such a large part of the equation. Women should not wait if they believe something is wrong. Taking the fi rst step in the prevention process is critical.”

Avoiding the fi rst step in the screening process allows for more complications later. “The disease won’t go away; it eventually goes further if left untreated.”

Dr. Alejandra Perez, an oncologist at Memorial Healthcare’s Breast Cancer Center shared vital health information as well. “Compliance is critical in all treatments. I want to emphasize here how clinical trials have proven that full adherence can greatly increase positive outcomes for patients.” There are teams in hospital systems and treatment centers to assist patients. “We have social workers and psychologists on staff who can help patients deal with the emotional and physical burden cancer treatment can entail.” Care doesn’t only include the “site” of the cancer, it includes the whole being. Surprisingly, Dr. Perez also shared, “Many patients with breast cancer avoid seeing a doctor after they fi nd a lump because they think they are too young.

This is a myth. Some patients avoid seeing a doctor because they have no family history of breast cancer.” It is essential that all women and men seek medical advice when they fi nd a lump or other abnormality in their breast tissue, lymph nodes, chest muscles or develop another symptom, regardless of age or family history. While breast cancer primarily affects women older than 50, Dr. Perez’s youngest patient is only 18 years old.

New screening tools, technology and treatments can and will help you should you fi nd out you have some form of cancer. The actual process of diagnosis can take weeks and involve many different kinds of tests. As many cancer survivors share, “waiting for results can feel like a lifetime and all the uncertainty can cause so much additional stress…but once you understand your own unique “big picture,” you can make better decisions. You and your doctors can formulate a treatment plan tailored just for you.”

Each year over 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. Thanks to earlier detection, new treatments and a better understanding of the disease, breastcancer patients have a greater chance for a positive outcome.

Dedicated Breast Cancer specialists make a difference in the lives of patients

An accredited Breast Cancer Program

Breast surgeons Margaret Gilot, MD and Cassann Blake, MD are part of the team at Cleveland Clinic’s Breast Cancer Center, which has been accredited by the National AccreditationProgram for Breast Centers (NAPBC). This accreditation

interdisciplinary care to patients with breast disease, including evaluation, treatment, and follow-up care.

“Our goal is to utilize every resource for our patients, combining innovative medical technology, to offer individualized, comprehensive treatment plans,” said Dr. Gilot.

Pioneering Breast Cancer treatment options

Women with breast cancer have a number of options including chemotherapy, radiation and oncological breast surgery. Patients who undergo mastectomy, or surgical removal of the breast, can choose to have breast reconstruction either immediately following mastectomy or at a later time. Cleveland Clinic plastic surgeons Martin Newman, MD, and Michel Samson, MD,have pioneered the use of laser imaging technology as well as using a woman’s own skin and soft tissue, to perform breast reconstruction, providing the best possible results.

“Many women do not have breast reconstruction because theyare unaware of the options that exist,” said Dr. Newman. “We meet with patients at the very beginning and coordinate closely with the breast surgeon in order to plan the best approach.”

Genetic Testing

Breast oncologist Elizabeth Stone, MD is also a member of theBreast Cancer Team. Dr. Stone is very involved with advancesin genetic breast cancer screening. A gene can develop anabnormality that changes how the cell works. The most common causes of hereditary breast cancer include mutations in BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 gene. There are other hereditary causesof breast cancer, but these are the most prevalent. These genescan be inherited from either parent.

At Cleveland Clinic Florida, high-risk women can take blood tests to screen for mutations in the BRCA genes. However,

personal or a strong family history. Genetic testing might also beused to determine if a woman who has already been diagnosed with breast cancer is at an increased risk for a second breastcancer or ovarian cancer.

The Republican Party of Broward County doesn’t even pretend it can win Broward County for Mitt Romney this fall.

Their goal is a number: 35 percent. No Republican in modern history has

taken the state of Florida without attaining 35 percent of voters, said Richard DeNapoli, chairman of the Republican Party of Broward County. And, since Florida is one of the key states needed to win victory for a presidential candidate – if not ground zero -- achieving that goal is more important than ever, he said.

“George Bush got 34.79 percent of Broward in 2004 and he won the state,” said DeNapoli. “In 2008, McCain got 33 percent. In 2000,

Bush got 31 percent and we know how that ended up. We are just looking to push the needle and help the state party.”

Broward County, the second most populous county in Florida with 1.8 million residents, is the blueest county in the state, with Miami-Dade County coming in second. How blue is it? With 257,000 registered Republicans in Broward and 570,000 registered Democrats,

“we’re outnumbered two to one,” noted DeNapoli.

Or, as prominent South Florida pollster and political strategist Jim Kane puts it, “it’s so blue here you can’t breathe.”

The reasons for Broward’s Democratic slant are well-documented. Once solidly Republican, the county changed dramatically when hundreds of thousands of retirees from New York and the northeast relocated to the county, starting back in the 1960s, fi lling high-rise condos in Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Hallandale. Largely Democratic, pro-union and liberal, they brought their ingrained voting habits with them.

No Republican has won a presidential race here since 1988, when George Bush beat Michael Dukakis.

And while many pollsters and voting experts had predicted the seniors would be dying out by now and replaced with younger, more conservative voters fl eeing Miami-Dade

County, the county’s partisan profi le has remained unchanged.“When you look at Democratic voting patterns in this county,

they haven’t changed,” said DeNapoli. “The younger Cubans are not as Republican or conservative as their parents. We are now seeing immigrants from all over the world coming to Broward. When they come, they are usually Democrats.”

Additionally, according to Kane, droves of non-citizens have fl ocked to Broward County, including Canadians and Central and South Americans.

That doesn’t mean that the Republican Party doesn’t have strongholds in Broward, too, like the northeast part of the county, including Lighthouse Point, where all but one city commissioner is Republican. And despite the wide partisan gap, Broward is still the second largest Republican county in the state.

But the numbers are still overwhelmingly Democratic in Broward and Romney’s chances of winning the county, everyone agrees, are nil.

“I don’t think Mitt Romney has a chance of taking Broward,” said former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, one of the state’s most prominent Republicans. “It’s a tough place to be a Republican. The strategy is to cut down on your losses in Democratic strongholds and overperform in other areas.”

Republican voter registration drives, which have been effective in other parts of the state, are not particularly useful in Broward, noted DeNapoli.

“Voting habits are hard to break here,” he said. “You can’t just go to a county fair and register hundreds of Republicans.”

Still, the Party has made tiny inroads in Broward, signing up 13,000 new Republican voters since the last general election, he said.

Cleaning up voter rolls has been one strategy of the Republican Party of Florida, albeit a controversial one. Florida Gov. Rick Scott has pushed elections supervisors to purge as many as 53,000 dead voters. But some of these local offi cials have balked at what they view as Scott’s interference with their roles and others have criticized the timing of the effort, launched just months before a presidential election.

One thing both sides agree is that voter turnout will also be crucial for both sides, but particularly for the Democrats.

“For the Democrats, it’s everything,” said Kane. “Republicans are better educated and tend to turn out no matter what. But Democrats need something to be excited about to vote.”

Mitch Ceasar, the longtime Democratic Chairman of Broward County, agrees. Voter turnout, coupled with the fate of the 275,000 independents in the county, keep him up at night.

“We have a change in Broward of seniors being replaced with swing voters or those who don’t vote at all,” said Ceasar. “High voter turnout is not guaranteed. I have to gaze with one eye on the turnout and the other eye at the undecideds. We are very concerned. Florida will be ground zero again.”

Ceasar said he is particularly concerned about an upcoming blitz of ads he expects the Republican Party to unleash in Florida. “The amount of money that will be dumped into Florida

will be ghastly,” he said. But Kane said Ceasar probably

shouldn’t lose sleep. In 2008, President Obama’s team was skillful at turning out his base.

“He had one of the best ground games I’ve seen in Florida,” Kane said. “I expect we will see that again.”

Kane said it’s too early to predict what kind of percentages either party will take in Broward, but he expects to have a better sense in late September

after both conventions, providing their artifi cial “bounce” in polls, are over.

Broward Young Lawyers Hit Links for At-Risk Kids

When members and friends of the Broward County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section (YLS) hit the links on October 13th, players will be doing more than vying for bragging rights or winning prizes. They’ll be raising money for Florida’s at-risk youth.

The Young Lawyers Section Annual Charity Golf Tournament, now in its 25th year, will steer 100% of its net proceeds to this year’s charitable beneficiary, Florida’s Children First, the state’s premier advocacy organization for at-risk youth. All proceeds will go to benefi t the Tracey McPharlin Initiative and the Broward Chapter of Florida Youth Shine.

“Everyone will have fun and many will be playing to win. But the Tournament showcases the best our profession and supporters have to offer,” said Howard Talenfeld, a prominent Fort Lauderdale child advocate attorney with event sponsor Colodny, Fass, Talenfeld, Karlinsky, Abate & Webb, and Founder and President of Florida’s

Children First. “Between charity events, advocacy and pro bono representation, Florida attorneys are to be lauded for giving back to those who need it the most.”

Boardroom Communications, a Fort Lauderdale public relations fi rm committed to child advocacy, has signed on as the event’s Exclusive Title Sponsor. Boardroom Communications, like many other local businesses and law fi rms, has committed to partnering with the YLS and supporting this worthwhile cause. “Over the last several years, I’ve seen our community really step up and support this event,” said Meghan Clary, President of the Young Lawyers Section and a family law attorney with Chorowski & Associates, P.A.

The individuals responsible for throwing this event and raising thousands of dollars for at-risk children are sixteen young lawyers on the YLS board. “Giving back to the community and those children in need is a great feeling. We hope to once again run a successful

event, and, more importantly, raise as much funds as possible for Florida’s Children First,” said Jeff Wank, the Tournament’s Chair and an associate at Colodny, Fass, Talenfeld, Karlinsky, Abate & Webb.

“Every year, this is a remarkable display of sportsmanship and charitable efforts from South Florida’s young attorneys and supporters of area children,” said Todd McPharlin, partner with event sponsor, Fort Lauderdale law fi rm Kelley /Uustal. His late sister and staunch legal advocate for at-risk kids is the namesake for the Tracey McPharlin Dependency Recruitment Initiative, which recruits and trains attorneys to represent children.

The event will be held at Jacaranda Country Club (9200 West Broward Blvd., Plantation) Check-in begins at 6:30 a.m., followed by the awards luncheon. Kelley / Uustal will host a Tee-Off Happy Hour on Thursday, October 4th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at American Social on Las Olas.

Annual Gala Benefi ting Children’s Home Society Of Florida

Children’s Home Society of Florida’s East Broward Auxiliary will host its 22nd Annual Gala October 20, at The Westin Beach Resort & Spa, Fort Lauderdale.

Children’s Home Society of Florida invites guests to join in the celebration as it enters its 110th year of serving Florida’s vulnerable children. The evening will feature a celebration theme, silent and

live auction and entertainment by the Marvelless Mark. Michele M. Greene will be honored as the R. David and I. Lorraine Thomas Child Advocate of the Year recipient. This award recognizes individuals and groups who have made a signifi cant impact toward improving the lives of abused, neglected and abandoned children throughout Florida.

Event Co-Chairs, Brenda Boyar and Jody Brown, and the Gala Committee host this event to raise funds that benefi t the 2,500 children and their families served through the Intercoastal Division. The East Broward Auxiliary and honorary chairperson, I. Lorraine Thomas invite the community to support Children’s Home Society

of Florida and celebrate 110 years of protecting children from abuse, neglect or abandonment, strengthening families, and fi nding safe, loving homes for children.

Children’s Home Society of Florida was created in 1902 and is the oldest and largest statewide pr ivate non-profit provider of services to children and families in Florida. The Intercoastal Division services include foster care, adoption, child development, residential

group home, parent education, counseling, and more. Here is a small example of how your generosity makes a difference in a child’s life:

After arriving at the I. Lorraine Thomas Children’s Home in January J.B., a fourteen-year-old boy, was off to a rough start. His abusive past had left him vulnerable, he did not trust anyone.

He had behavioral problems, ran away, and did poorly in school. After a couple of months living in the group home, he started responding to counseling and family style living. His behavior progressively improved. For the fi rst time in his life he was experiencing a sense of belonging in a healthy, family atmosphere. He experienced birthday celebrations, trips to sporting events, and “family” meals. J.B. was moved into a foster home and is currently achieving a major mile stone, as he reunites with his mother.

Gala sponsorship and corporate underwriting opportunities are available, from $50 to $25,000. Individual tickets are $200. Current sponsors: I. Lorraine Thomas, Wells Fargo, Lynn and Dolores Drayton, Westin Beach Resort & Spa, Coldwell Banker, State Farm Insurance Company-Michele Greene Agency, State Farm Insurance Company- North Broward County Agency Field Offi ce, Kaufman, Rossin & Co., Broward Health, Southern Wine & Spirits of Miami, Lighthouse Chamber of Commerce, Beverly Benjamin, Sheryl A. Boys N’ Toys Private Yacht HopHosted by Northrop & Johnson,

Kids In Distress Boys N’ Toys invites guests to step onboard some of the most spectacular yachts at this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show for one special night to benefi t Kids In Distress of Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Boys N’ Toys takes place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26 at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show at Bahia Mar and event tickets are $250 per person.

The Boys N’ Toys “Superhero Committee” was formed to host a successful special event benefi tting underserved children in the community.

“The concept behind this event is that we have real-life superheroes in our own community,” said Kids In Distress Development Officer Patricia Moskol. “Last year, the event raised more than $100,000 and I am certain the Superhero Committee will surpass the $200,000 goal set for this year.”

While yacht-hopping, guests have the opportunity to bid on extraordinary silent and live auction items, enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and partake in a variety of activities. Last year’s silent auction items included jewelry, weekend getaways, gift baskets and sports memorabilia.

The Boys N’ Toys event is one of the most exclusive events at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the largest in-water boat show in the world, which runs from Oct. 25 through Oct. 29. Featuring more than $3 billion worth of boats and marine products, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is known for its astounding number of luxurious yachts. Though the show attracts yachting enthusiasts from around the world, there is something for everyone who loves the water.

“While this event is known for its elegance and entertainment, the most special part of Boys N’ Toys is how greatly our efforts benefi t the children

of Kids In Distress,” said Moskol. “In 2011, KID services helped more than 8,000 children and families and we would be unable to continue to meet the needs of our community without the help of our friends and sponsors.”

Other Kids In Distress signature events include the Inlet Challenge Bicycle Ride, Duck Fest Derby, Cooking with KID and 5K Run/Walk for KIDs.

Kids In Distress brings more than 30 years of experience as a nationally accredited, community-supported agency dedicated to the prevention of child abuse, preservation of the family and the care and treatment of abused children in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

KID offers a full continuum of care that includes emergency shelters, therapeutic services, abuse prevention, foster care and adoption.

Fairy Tale Ball: Alice In Wonderland

The Diamond Angels of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation will host the 9th Annual Fairy Tale Ball on Saturday, November 10 at 7:00 p.m. at The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa.

This year’s theme is Alice in Wonderland and guests will be mesmerized by the transformation of the ballroom, which will morph into a dreamlike landscape with fantastical scenes from the beloved children’s fable.

Featuring a cocktail reception, dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions, and an electrifying classic rock concert, the special fundraising event is always an unforgettable night. This year’s musical acts include Steve Augeri of Journey and Mike Marino aka DJ 1Tre, son of Dan Marino. Despite having autism, Mike has excelled behind the turn table and is one of South Florida’s most in-demand DJs.

“I have always believed in doing my share for the community and helping out where I could. I decided to get involved with the Diamond Angels after I started my own family and was looking for a way to help children in need. If my children ever got hurt or sick, Joe DiMaggio is the only place I would consider taking them,” said Elizabeth Jacobs, Fairy Tale Ball event co-chair.

As in the movie, Alice must navigate unfamiliar territory and persevere through difficult circumstances; so has this year’s Special Ambassador, Jayden Villano. Last fall, the 19-month-old’s family learned that his heart was not pumping properly and he

desperately needed a heart transplant. Doctors used a new device called a Berlin artifi cial heart which kept Jayden alive while the family awaited a heart donor. He was the fi rst South Florida pediatric patient to use the artifi cial heart prior to a transplant and this past April, doctors at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital successfully performed a heart transplant. Today, Jayden is healthy and an example of hope and survival against daunting odds. He’s an inspiration to all he meets.

Another focal point of the night is the array of outstanding live and silent auction prizes which include: an eight day cruise aboard the Carnival Freedom, and resort destination weekend packages to Los Angeles, New York, and Napa among others.

Proceeds from the event will support Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospitals’ Pediatric Cardiac Program that recently completed its sixth heart transplant.

“The Fairy Tale Ball is an incredibly fun and social event. We are looking forward to a wonderful evening and most importantly, raising funds for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s remarkable Pediatric Cardiac Program,” said Allison Antevy, Fairy Tale Ball event co-chair.

The Diamond Angels of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation (www.diamondangels.org) is a volunteer organization that advocates for the hospital and its pediatric programs. The group is dedicated

to supporting the mission of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital - to provide safe, quality, cost-effective, patient and family centered healthcare services, regardless of their ability to pay. Since 2004, the Diamond Angels have raised more than $2.4 million for the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and the Wasie Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The 2012 Diamond Angels Fairy Tale Ball co-chairs are Allison Antevy, Ronnie Greissman and Elizabeth Jacobs. The Title Sponsor is The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa; the Presenting Sponsor is Dade Medical College, additional sponsor support from Duty Free Americas and the Media Sponsor is Lifestyle Magazine Group.

Sponsorship packages are still available and tickets cost $250 per person. For more information contact Kate Rodriguez at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation at (954) 265-3454 or [email protected].

Registration begins at 11 a.m., followed by lunch at 12 p.m. The event will take place at Signature Grand, 6900 W State Road 84, Davie, FL 33317.

For the awards, the general public nominated outstanding Broward philanthropists whose contributions have made a signifi cant impact in the organizations they serve and the community as a whole.

“There are many, many exceptional philanthropists in Broward County, and we were pleased to receive a great number of nominations,” said event tri-chair Tracy J. Schuldiner. “It was very diffi cult to select the honorees from among such a wonderful group of nominees, but we are delighted to honor these amazing individuals, corporations and foundations.”

Members of the Rotary Club of Weston enjoyed their summer vacations, but fall is upon us and that means it is time to Get Fit! The Rotary club’s 15th Annual Run for Tomorrow and Get Fit family health and wellness festival are scheduled for Sunday, December 9, 2012, at Weston Town Center. This annual 5K and half marathon event has drawn thousands of participants in recent years, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for worthy Rotary charities.

This year, club members have been challenged to slim down and shape up in the months leading up to the Run. Event co-chair Bob Greene kicked off the Rotary Weight Loss Olympics by introducing his fellow Rotarians to the “The Scales” and “The Chart” at a recent weekly breakfast meeting. Each Thursday morning, Rotarians can weigh in and chart progress towards their goals. The top three losers at December 6

will receive accolades and medals at the Run for Tomorrow.

“Rotary is the leading community service club in the world,” said this year’s Weston Rotary club president, Carolyn Burk. “But we always let our concern for our fellow citizens begin at home. The Rotary Club of Weston is working to bring awareness of health and wellness issues to the community.”

Last year, over 1,900 runners and walkers participated in Run events, and 400 elementary school students joined in the Mayor’s Challenge Walk. Over 3,000 attended the Get Fit Festival, where vendors and sponsors promote healthy lifestyle choices and provide wellness screenings, food, games and fun for all. The highly successful, family-friendly event is made possible by hard-working Rotarians, the City of Weston, and the generosity of area businesses. Last year’s wonderful sponsors

included Presenting Sponsor DynaServ Florida, Ultimate Software, ReMAX Premier, Auto Nation, Audi of Pembroke Pines, Baptist Medical Plazas, and many others.

The Rotary Club of Weston looks forward to another great community gathering at this year’s Run for Tomorrow and accompanying Get Fit Weston events. Browse YouTube for the 2012 - 15th Annual Run for Tomorrow and Get Fit Weston video. For more information about runner registration, sponsorship opportunities and festival booth space, contact co-chairs Bob Greene, [email protected], or John Massaro, [email protected].

The Rotary Club of Weston meets weekly on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at Weston Hills Country Club. Prospective members are welcome. Learn more about Rotary and “Service Above Self” at www.rotary.org.

Sydney’s Incredible Defeat of Ewing’s Sarcoma

West Broward resident Sydney Lister was at the beginning of her 10th grade year at St. Thomas Aquinas High School when she went home with pain in her back radiating down her right leg. An MRI revealed a mass wrapped around her sciatic nerve. On September 19, 2011 the Lister family was advised that the biopsy performed was positive for Ewing’s Sarcoma, a very rare pediatric bone cancer, with less than 500 cases diagnosed annually worldwide.

Members of the West Broward and Weston community led by Paul Panagos, Steve Strumpf, Peter Panagos, and Debbie Martin formed SIDES (Sydney’s Incredible Defeat of Ewing’s Sarcoma) a 501(c)(3) Foundation. SIDES quickly teamed

with the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah, one of only four Ewing’s Sarcoma research labs in the country, and began funding a “SIDES” scholar there. In the short time since its inception, SIDES has already raised an astounding $165,000.00.

News of Sydney’s illness spread, and the youth of West Broward and Weston went into action to help fi nd

a cure for this horrible disease. Two such stories involve Ethan Peters and the student body at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church.

Faced with choosing a confi rmation project, Ethan Peter’s, having never met Sydney Lister, ran an event to benefit SIDES. He designed a web page with Sydney’s story hoping to acquire donations for SIDES. This site was operational for one month and raised $2111 to help fi nd a cure for Ewing’s Sarcoma. Ethan said; “I was looking for a service project idea when I heard about Sydney’s condition. My instincts told me I had to help. It made me feel good to help Sydney,

and to see that people had the heart to give out their hard earned cash to help Sydney and make her life better. “

Scott Trethewey, a fifth grader at St. Bonaventure Catholic School has known the Lister’s for “a long time.” Scott said, “It was devastating seeing Sydney suffer from Ewing’s Sarcoma and I wanted to do something to help

her, so I decided to sell the bracelets.” Scott created “SYDNEY STRONG” bracelets and sold them, raising $1656.50. Learning about Sydney and Ewing’s Sarcoma from Scott, the fi fth grade class at St. Bonaventure culminated their Junior Achievement program with a huge project to benefi t SIDES. Each class created six companies, made prototypes of their products, and sold them at school,

donating their profi ts of $891 to SIDES. In addition, the fi fth grade Girl Scout Troop from St. Bonaventure made and sold fl ower pens donating the profi ts of $200 to SIDES.

Sydney’s scans in the latter part of March were all normal. She completed her chemotherapy protocol on June 23, 2012. Sydney is currently volunteering at The Jason Taylor Foundation and plans on doing volunteer work with the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. Sydney is looking forward to returning to St. Thomas for her 11th grade year.

SIDES is committed to fi nding a cure for Ewing’s Sarcoma, fi nding less toxic and debilitating treatment options for those suffering from Ewing’s Sarcoma and helping families emotionally, and fi nancially who are suffering from this disease. SIDES is run completely by volunteers which allows all monies raised to go back into raising more money, helping more affected families, and funding more research at HCI.

The “Spirit of SIDES” is growing and getting stronger! We are committed to fi ghting until a cure is found. Please visit the SIDES website at www.sidescharity.org for more information, to fi nd out how you can get involved, attend an event or make a donation. LP

Making A Difference In Our Community Lou Barrionuevo, regional managing director of

the South Florida Business Center of the Principal Financial Group, is extremely passionate about helping the Hispanic community.

Hispanics represent America’s largest racial minority and the fastest-growing demographic of the young workforce. Unfortunately, Latinos also have the lowest high school and college completion rates of any ethnic group in the United States. Through involvement with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Barrionuevo is helping to show that The Principal truly cares about the Hispanic community.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is the nation’s leading Hispanic higher education fund that works to address the barriers that keep many Latinos from earning a college degree.

According to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund website, the group has awarded more than $360 million in scholarships and supports a broad range of outreach and education programs to help

students and their families navigate collegiate life—from gaining admission and securing financial aid to finding employment after graduation.

As the fastest growing segment of the U.S. workforce, increasing college graduation rates among Hispanics can lead to better-paying jobs for more individuals, families and communities.

The Principal began financially supporting the scholarship program fi ve years ago. Barrionuevo began sitting on the organization’s advisory board soon after. He feels an especially strong connection to The Hispanic Scholarship Fund because of his own background.

“I came over from Cuba with my family in 1962, and we had to leave everything

behind,” he recounts. “Even after living in government housing, I felt the need to get an education and prove myself as an asset to this country—my passion comes from wanting to facilitate that same opportunity for other Hispanics.”

Barrionuevo strongly believes that his place on the board gives him an incredible opportunity to give back to the Hispanic community.

Lou’s company, The Principal Financial Group (The Principal ®) is a global investment management leader including retirement services, insurance

solutions and asset management. The Principal offers businesses, individuals and institutional clients a wide range of financial products and services, including retirement, asset management and insurance through its diverse family of fi nancial services companies. Founded in 1879 and a member of the FORTUNE 500®, the Principal Financial Group has $320.8 billion in assets under management and serves some 17.8 million customers worldwide from offi ces in Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America and the United States. Principal Financial Group, Inc., is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol PFG. For more information, visit www.principal.com.

University Hospital and Medical Center Celebratesthe Opening of the New Pediatric Urgent Care AreaUniversity Hospital and Medical Center (UHMC) celebrated the opening of its new Pediatric Urgent Care area in the Emergency Room with a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 13. Hospital officials,

Big Business Mentoring

According to the Small Business Administration, businesses with 500 or fewer employees account for nearly half of the GDP, and more than half of all U.S. employment. Small businesses surround us in almost every shape and form, but it is important to understand that the challenges they face are the same, if not greater than their larger competitors. Small businesses tend to be run by their owners, who are also working face to face with customers, who have little time left to manage and strategize for the next phase of the business as larger firms do simply by committing personnel to those facets of the business.

Over 95% of these small businesses are also run by people who come from within the industry, often working their way up or starting off on their own with no formal business training.

Check out highway billboards, read most magazines, and you can see that an educational movement is afoot, as workers hard hit by the recession are going back to school, getting retrained, and many of them starting their own businesses. Not everyone can afford to go back to college or get an MBA though, and not everyone is looking for that specifi c experience. The real world can be very different from the classroom, and for those of us who have given our all to our business, and to our community, we should welcome them with direction to a path of business sustainability and growth.

One such free, locally-owned, and community-based exchange is Mountaintop University, which exists somewhere between the formal learning of the classroom,

and the place most business people fi nd themselves - wondering if they are on the right path, doing the right things, and whether or not they will achieve their goals. Mountaintop University has pulled together a group of local and nationally known Industry Experts that share their knowledge with the on-line community through

blogs, podcasts and webinars. These Industry Experts (they call Gurus), give freely of their insights and business practices and encourage on-line discussions, giving tips and techniques as that of an informal mentor.

The term GURU has a deeper meaning to the Mountaintop staff.

For their business model, it stands for: Give Understanding, Receive Understanding. A community sharing insights and best practices learn from each other and therefore build solid professional relationships.

The power of mentoring throughout history, as established professionals – as artists, craftsmen or captains of industry – connected with others in order to not only share what they know, but to continue learning, too. We already feel a responsibility toward giving back to our community in meaningful ways, even in the hardest of economic times, but where is that same impulse when it comes to sharing best practices in business?

The path to clarity is not an easy one, and fi nding the right insight from a trusted coach, mentor, or guru shouldn’t be an additional challenge for business owners.

You can learn more about this community of knowledge by visiting: www.mountaintopuniversity.com and be part of the conversation. LP

Launched by Todd Hills in June 2011, Pawngo began after Hills’ 25 years of experience owning and operating more than 50 pawn shops. When starting Pawngo, his mission was to bring convenience and

credibility to the increasingly popular pawning industry. Hills states that: “Traditional lending institutions are simply not able to meet the cash-fl ow needs of America right now. When the bank says no, individuals seeking immediate funding don’t have a ton of other options. Pawngo gives consumers access to capital without credit checks or fi nancial disclosures.” The growing demand of alternative lending services across the country has allowed Todd Hills to reinvent the industry by expanding the breadth of Pawngo’s product offering and delving into untapped markets.

One of these markets includes their new Luxury Asset Division, which caters to a large portion of their customer base who occupy a higher income bracket than standard pawn shops. Led by GIA Gemologist, Kelle Graham, Pawngo’s Luxury Assets Division is dedicated to providing a more personalized experience for customers who have large scale loans. Graham notes that her high end clientele are always pleasantly surprised when they come across Pawngo, as most were not previously aware they could secure money against items they already own.

One such customer is Linda Wintersteen. Living in a small ski resort town means few places to secure money against high end assets, but after some research, Linda used Pawngo to secure a loan on her

Louis Vuitton handbags and luggage. When asked about her experience with Pawngo, Linda states: “I felt comfortable from the moment I started looking at the website and then a chat came on. My Pawngo Rep was so wonderful and supportive. I placed

my checking account info on the web and the loan quote came back, just as promised, which

was a relief. I fi lled out the form and then I got an email back saying my account will have the

cash in tomorrow.” High end jewelry, fine watches, diamonds

and precious gems are some of the luxury items Graham and her highly-trained team appraise

based on several criteria such as current diamond values and market vs. retail value. Pawngo currently

holds a $100K diamond ring on loan in their vault. Pawngo has already loaned nearly $9 million since

opening last year, and Hills believes the difference lies in the trust his company has built with their customers.

Hills wants to keep his online business personal and even goes so far as to prefer the term “life event” over

“transaction.” With more people than ever struggling in this economy, Pawngo offers a discreet, quick and safe way to pawn luxury items without losing precious heirlooms for good.

If you or someone you know might be interested in speaking with Kelle Graham directly about any luxury items, feel free to contact her directly at [email protected] or call Pawngo’s direct line at 1-(866)-499-2363. LP

Finding Local Services in a SnapMatchmaking isn’t just for dating anymore.

Corey Leff, the founder of South Florida consumer-to-business matchmaking website spendLO, recognizes the value in matching purchase-ready consumers looking to save money, with local businesses looking for a risk-free way to increase their bottom line.

spendLO offers consumers a secure platform where they can post their service needs, and the amount they are willing to pay for the service request to be completed,

safe from any unwanted solicitation. spendLO’s network of pre-qualifi ed local service providers are instantly notified of the opportunity, and are given the chance to submit a bid to fulfill those needs. At the consumer’s convenience, they select a service provider based on the bid price submitted and the vendor’s reputation.

“spendLO was designed with both the consumers’ and businesses’ needs in mind,” Corey explains. “Having vendors compete for work ensures the consumer is going to get the best price, but our vendors really benefi t as well, growing their client base and revenue totals through our cost-free alternative to conventional advertising.”

Offi cially launching in June 2012, spendLO is quickly making waves among South Florida residents. “I am honestly amazed at the amount of money spendLO saves me,” says Eric Rosenfeld, a Boynton Beach resident and regular spendLO user. “The fi rst time I used spendLO I received a bid for $125 to clean my 40 foot boat. I’d been paying $400 on cleanings, and the guy did a great job!”

spendLO is fi nding that its network of service providers have projects that need to be completed too, with local business owners fi nding success using spendLO both as a service provider and as a customer. “We’ve been receiving so much business from spendLO that I had to try it out for myself. It’s pretty awesome I was able to quickly fi nd movers willing to work within my budget and move me into my new house on a Sunday and then return to work on Monday with the ability to pick and choose which of my neighbors’ service requests are right for my business,”

Evan Merritt, Owner of E&C Property Management Services in Lake Worth tells us.

Having already made hundreds of successful matches in cities like Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, and West Palm Beach, spendLO recently began offering service to the residents of Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

With the potential for thousands of matches to be made in the upcoming months, in hundreds of service categories, spendLO looks forward to helping continue to stimulate the South Florida community. “I live in Delray Beach. My friends and family are scattered throughout South Florida. I care about this area. spendLO is certainly a business, but my core concept has always been to help our local economy. spendLO really is a win-win for everyone, with both consumers and businesses reaping the benefi ts,” says Leff. Local business, helping local consumers, helping the local economy, sure sounds like a great match.

*spendLO is 100% free to register, post projects, and

submit bids. spendLO collects ten percent of the accepted

bid price, with the balance paid directly to the service

provider.

American Heritage Is #1 Prep School In The Country Says MaxPreps!

Talk about an amazing year, American Heritage was named the “… 2011-2012 #1 Prep Sports Program in all of the country,” according to Steve Montoya, Executive Editor at MaxPreps, a rating agency that covers high school sports nationwide.

“You were also named the No.1 school in your state, Top Girls Program in the nation and the Top Medium School in terms of enrollment in the nation. From all of us here at MaxPreps, congratulations on a wonderful year,” Montoya wrote to Jeff Dellenbach, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at American Heritage School. It was a remarkable spring season in which American Heritage captured state championships in baseball, softball and boys and girls track and vaulted the Patriots to the top spot in the inaugural MaxPreps Cup standings.

“We have a remarkable student body,” Coach Dellenbach said with some degree of pride. He went on to point out that the success of the sports program and indeed the high standing of American Heritage is a result

of exceptional coaches, teachers, administrative staff and… of course, the students. “Excellence is part of the DNA of American Heritage.”

American Heritage took home honors in three categories. The Patriots are also in the top medium school’s program and they have the top female sports program with 517 points.

Along with the state titles in baseball, softball and boys and girls track, the Patriots also won a state championship in boys soccer and fi nished second in boys and girls golf, girls swimming and girls soccer. The Patriots were also nationally ranked in baseball and boys and girls track.

To accommodate the sports programs, American Heritage boasts a 12,000 square foot gymnasium, fi ve athletic fi elds and a 2000 square foot

weightlifting and conditioning center as well as an Olympic- sized pool.

Founded in 1965, the wooded 40-acre campus, with its colonial style complex, resembles a small college in size and design. Located in Plantation, the co-ed school for grades Pre-K through 12th has approximately 2,400 students. The high school, grades 9 through 12, has a student population of 1,273 students.

“Our mission is to graduate students who are prepared in mind, body and spirit to meet the requirements of the colleges of their choice,” said Dr. Doug Laurie, Vice President of American Heritage Schools.

Of course, the school is much more than sports. A case in point is the Fine Arts program that is housed in a 100,000 square foot facility which contains a 1,000 seat Proscenium Theatre, black box theatre and spacious studios for all areas of the arts. The library is a 10,000 square foot state-of-the-art structure housing five interactive classrooms, 150 computers, and 60,000 volumes of books and reference materials.

“We have a remarkable student

body. Excellence is part of the

DNA of American Heritage.”

Teaching is a skill, a talent and for many, a calling. Yet, there is a difference between “teaching” and “educating.” An educator is not only a teacher but also an academic coach—focusing on understanding each child’s various needs, as well as helping to develop skills and strategies that can last for a lifetime.

In the classroom, there are about 20 different brains, at least as many learning styles and a wide range of learning differences. Even the most gifted teachers must navigate this terrain in order to impart as much information as possible, making it difficult to account for each individual’s specifi c needs and differences.

Children experiencing diffi culty learning can clearly benefit from additional assistance, such as individualized tutoring. Students with atypical learning styles often do not feel smart or capable. They may have learned to resist or tune out those who are trying to teach them. They also may, understandably, focus their attention on non-academic interests or activities where they feel more in control and successful and have more fun.

But wouldn’t a tutor need to know a lot about psychology to

be effective with such a child? Not every child who struggles with learning difficulties must receive formal psychological interventions. However, taking these issues into account in tandem with academic concerns can take learning to a higher level. By creating a hybrid approach and educating tutors to understand the student’s emotional, psychological and learning challenges, a more comprehensive approach is created that addresses the core of the child’s learning diffi culties.

Now, consider what happens when anxiety, as it usually does, compounds your child’s academic struggles: She’s worried about completing an assignment, sits down to work on it, and is fl ooded with thoughts like, “I’m not good at this, it’s too hard for me, and I’m never going to complete my work.” She almost can’t help arriving at the faulty conclusion that she is unable to learn.

In many cases, children who experience these feelings have a specific learning difficulty or an emotional problem that affects them academically. These students typically get caught in a vicious cycle in which their learning issues result in reactions that exacerbate academic problems. In other words, academic diffi culties create anxiety and in return anxiety results in even more academic problems.

By introducing tutors to ev idence-based learn ing strategies and combining them with effective academic and instructional methods, we can empower the student to understand their diffi culties, and

eventually develop better ways to achieve their goals. This lays the foundation for them to embrace a new frame of mind that helps them fl ourish both personally and academically.

Think of it in terms of the training elite athletes receive—in order to fulfi ll their potential on the fi eld, golf course or tennis court, these athletes not only work with coaches who specialize in their sport, but who also teach them how to use their thoughts and emotions to develop their game to the highest level possible. The best tutors for students with challenging learning styles do this too.

Elite tutors know how to teach good “learning values” right along with traditional academic skills, like reading and math. These tutors learn how to put psychological concepts into words and goals that students can relate to, put into practice, and see results. They model ways to cope with frustration, and how to enjoy rather than fear learning challenges. In essence, elite tutors teach children to prepare for a test like it is a sporting match. Applying these types of principles to supporting your child’s academic pursuits and the kind of tutoring they receive gives the term student-athlete an entirely new meaning – providing everyone with a good reason to cheer.

I am a confirmed “Serial Entrepreneur”! I have bought and sold many businesses for myself over the last 25 years, and as owner of Transworld Business Advisors, I have assisted thousands of business owners to buy and sell theirs. Currently, I spend a lot of my time mentoring our offi ce staff nationwide and speak nationally on the subject of buying a business.

One of the most popular questions I am asked is, “What is the best business to buy?” My quick answer is “one that makes money and can prove it.” The real answer however, is much more complicated. Whether you are looking to buy a business, start a business or choose a franchise, here are the key things to look for based on my success and proven track record:

LONGEVITY- I like businesses that have been around for a long time. Most people dislike change and old habits die hard. Therefore, customers that have “worn a path” to a business usually continue to do so.

ESTABLISHED INDUSTRY- Trying to launch new products or business ideas is one of the hardest things to do. I would rather buy or grab market share from an industry that is already making money.

MONEY IS FLOWING - It is best to be in a business where money is changing hands. High traffi c, volume, and recurring revenues

are all great things to look for. HIGH MARGINS - Thin is not in!

Slim margins that rely on volume are vulnerable to large losses. Even slight increases in the cost of goods or increased expenses can have a huge impact. I prefer a business that can make a lot of money on one sale!

OUTSIDE SALES POTENTIAL- Businesses that rely on drawing from local traffi c (like a gas station) can’t grow very much. I look for a business that through marketing, networking, and outsides sales can greatly expand.

PROVEN BUSINESS MODEL- Buy into a successful business model. I like franchises and other established brands.

IT THRIVES ON YOUR TALENTS, AND WON’T SUFFER FROM YOUR WEAKNESSES- Whatever business you pursue should make the majority of its money based on your skill set. You can hire the rest. My dear friend Richard Parker wrote a book “How To Buy A Good Business At A Great Price” that talks about this topic in depth.

P A S S I O N FOR IT - You should love what you do, have a passion for it, and your

employees and customers should be happy to see you. If tough times come, loving what you do will help you get through them.

IT PASSES THE SMELL TEST- Is it too good to be true? Can you explain it to your 3-year-old or grandparent? Is it legal or won’t be soon? What does your gut say? If no …then pass.

There is nothing better than being a successful entrepreneur! I look forward to writing more about the subject in the future.

It is clear that a nutritious, well balanced diet before and during pregnancy is the best gift a mother can give to her newborn child. A common misconception is that pregnant women should eat for two. The reality is close but not in that magnitude, pregnant women will need only an extra 300 calories a day during pregnancy to provide proper growth and development for the fetus and maintain a healthy mom. (Basically the calories on a cheese sandwich will cover this demand).

The food you eat on a daily basis affects how your body works, heals, grows and how it deals with energy in the short and long term. Pregnancy brings a new factor and at this time your habits may also affect another person.

Lets start fi rst with the proper weight gain during pregnancy and why it is recommended. It is not only to maintain good maternal health; excessive weight gain during pregnancy has been associated with certain problems on the fetus, like birth defects, preterm birth, injuries at birth, being obese during childhood and the increased risk of the soon to be born of developing diabetes in the future.

The usual weight gain should

be based on your pre pregnancy weight. We generally establish this goal by calculating your Body Mass Index (BMI). If your BMI is normal, the expected weight gain during the entire pregnancy is 25-35 pounds. Women starting with overweight (if your BMI is 25-29.9) should gain 15-25 pounds, while obese moms (if your BMI is 30 or more) should only gain between 11-20 pounds. It is important to emphasize here that it is not healthy to attempt to lose weight while pregnant.

Now what should you eat?Again I will use the term “a

balanced diet” which means incorporating daily servings from each of the food groups. This is usually an easy task to record, since most foods are labeled with their nutritional facts.

In terms of calories it is recommended to have 1800 during the first trimester, 2200 during the second trimester, and 2400 for the last trimester. Eat these in three meals and 3 snacks,

You will need every day: 75-100 grams of Protein (fully cooked f i s h / s e a f o o d , meat, chicken or legumes), about 1000 mg of Calcium (dairy, eggs , to fu , white beans, almonds), 27 milligrams of Iron (green leafy veggies, whole grains, lean protein), 800 micrograms of Folic Acid (green leafy veggies, fruits,

whole grain, legumes), and at least 85 milligrams of Vitamin C (fruits or veggies).

To help you achieve your weight goal, besides maintaining a healthy diet, it is important and effective to incorporate an exercise routine of at least 150 minutes a week (swimming, walking, riding stationary bike, aerobic classes) and avoid caffeine and alcohol.

If you are planning to have a baby or are already expecting, we will be happy to see you in our offi ce to discuss in more detail your personal needs.

Dr. Weinstein is the first physician in South Florida to utilize the PinPointe Foot Laser. Over the past 3 years he has performed over 1000 procedures.

This FDA approved technology kills the pathogens that cause toenail fungus (Onychomycosis)

The gentle laser light works through the nail.

Safe. No side effects.Does not harm the nail or skin.Painless-no anesthesia needed.Shoes can be worn immediately after treatment.

A fungus infection of the toenail, also known as onychomycosis, is one of the most common dermatologic disorders affecting the foot. The disease is characterized by a thickening of the toenail plate, debris under the toenail, a lifting of the leading edge of the nail, a change in nail color and occasionally an odor. Patients complain that toenail fungus is ugly and embarrassing. This condition is often ignored because the infection can be present for years without causing any pain.

If ignored, the infection can

spread to other toenails, the skin on the feet (ringworm or tinea pedis) and even the fi ngernails. Severe cases can impair one’s ability to walk or lead t o painful ingrown toenails.

Contributing factors for developing nail fungus infection include:

A history of athlete’s foot Injury to the nail bedSports/ shoe traumaExcessive perspirationDiabetesCirculatory problemsImmune-defi ciency conditions

Treatments for Fungal NailsHistorically, treatments for

fungal nails included topical medications, oral agents (pills) or surgical removal of the nail plate. The topical medications were largely ineffective. Oral agents have been known to have possible side affects involving the liver, stomach upset, rashes and temporary loss of taste. Blood tests are needed to monitor the liver enzymes. Removal of the nail plate was painful and debilitating.

How does the laser work?

This patented laser is specially designed to penetrate through your toenail and destroy the specific pathogens embedded in and under your nail causing the infection.

Is this laser painful? The gentle laser light

beam has no effect on healthy tissue. There is no discomfort associated with the treatment during or after. This treatment does not harm or affect your activity in any way. Some patients may experience the sensation of heat.

Is this treatment safe? There are no age or health

restrictions or limitations. In clinical studies there have been no adverse reactions, injuries, disabilities or known side effects. As you may know, the use of the oral medication available today for treatment of fungus toenails, carries with it possible systemic involvement (commonly the liver and kidney). This laser does not!

Dr. Weinstein has offices in Weston and Coral Springs. He is Board Certifi ed by The American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine. He has been in practice for 29 years.

Writing a good press release can be challenging; getting people to read it online is even more challenging. There are ways, though, for people to fi nd your news release on their favorite online sources for news.

Three key elements put your news in front of the right audience: the headline, the keywords and distribution. Here’s an insider’s guide to getting all three right.

The headline is most important. First, it’s an attention-getter. Bad headline, no one reads your news. Second, Google and other search engines pull keywords and phrases from the headline and match them to searches.

Let’s say your company introduces a new product that cleans windows. A clever headline might read, “Now, your windows will be really spotless!” Not good. It doesn’t mention your company name or product. People looking for a window cleaner probably won’t fi nd this news release on page one in a search for “window cleaners.”

A better headline: “Acme debuts ClearView, a cleaner guaranteed to leave windows spotless.” Now, the headline has your company’s name, product and a benefi t. A person looking for a glass cleaner will fi nd ClearView; Google will grab almost all the words and index them.

The headline is also the right length – 69 characters, with spaces. Most search engines cut off the headline after 70 spaces. Write a long headline and part of it never reaches the audience.

Remember that next time your

company announces a new vice president named Peter Theodore Hooper. You might want to publish only his last name in the headline.

By the way, the important words in your news release are part of what PR pros call SEO, short for search engine optimization. Good use of targeted keywords helps improve search rankings.

Here are some tips for Acme.First, make sure the targeted

keywords appear several times. Not every sentence – that’s spam. In our example, the keywords would be glass, window, cleaner, spotless, ClearView and Acme. Two or more of those words should appear in every paragraph.

Alternately, each word should appear every 100 words or so. In a typical 400-word news release, each word would show up four times.

You can check whether your words are popular with the Google keyword Tool. It’s free and helps you determine which words and phrases are searched most often. The right words push your news release higher in search results.

Second, insert hyperlinks that take the reader to a relevant Web page on your site. That probably is not the homepage. For ClearView, you may have created a special webpage or micro-site that gives a full display of the product. That’s where you want to people to go. Don’t go link crazy, though. Limit the links to one about every 100 words.

Third, write a short, clear summary. It appears in search results under the headline. You have a limited number of

characters, as few as 160 and as many as 240. The summary should have all the keywords: “Acme introduces a spotless window cleaner – ClearView -- for homes and offi ces. The company guarantees perfectly clear glass or return the product for a refund.”

The summary hits the mark: 159 characters with all the keywords – Acme, ClearView, window, glass, cleaner, spotless, and guarantees.

Fourth, write a strong “About” section for the bottom of the news release. Search engines like it. The paragraph should have all the keywords and information about your company.

Last, is distribution. Paid newswires such as PR Newswire, Marketwire and BusinessWire feed thousands of news media, portals, databases and websites, many of which register on Google News. When your company has big news, consider using a paid wire service.

Recent news reports on insurance companies have just begun to scratch the surface with unfair homeowners’ insurance premium rate increases.

Unfortunately, most Floridians are not aware of how or why their homes have been hit with huge insurance hikes. However, there is something you can do about it. By hiring legal counsel, and at no cost to you, an attorney with expertise in this fi eld can bring your premium down to reasonable rates.

The biggest problem with the increased insurance rates is the result of inspections initiated by the insurance companies. In some cases, the home inspections and rate increases have been surprising homeowners for fi ve years.

This fall, our law firm was contacted by an advocate for an 80-year-old man who had been living in his home for over 40 years. Citizens Property Insurance Company, with their re-inspection program, increased his premium to the point where he was facing having to sell his home. When I heard of the rate increase and

this man’s situation, I challenged Citizens and they dropped their assessment. (Disclaimer: The success of this case is not indicative of our potential success of these types of cases in the future).

Perhaps you’ve seen an increase on your insurance policy and didn’t realize you had rights as a homeowner to fi ght back against the insurance companies. The Miami Herald has reported that Citizens Insurance conducted 228,603 home inspections which resulted in increased premiums 74% of the time.

If you’ve been victimized by Citizens, or any another insurance company such as State Farm or Universal Property and Casualty, I encourage you to seek legal representation. At our fi rm, we provide licensed home inspectors and general contractors who will inspect your home with no initial cost to you. Our representation is on a contingency fee basis or our fees and costs are paid by your insurance company if we prevail.

A c c o rd i n g t o the Miami Herald investigative series on August 11th, 2012, the Citizens re-inspection program “has already cost homeowners hundreds of millions of dollars. And the pocketbook impact could easily reach the billions as more and more homeowners are

affected”.The Herald investigation

reported on residents such as a 79-year-old retired librarian who saw her insurance premium jump from $4,882 to $7,028. Unfortunately, these insurance companies have been increasing premiums for fi ve years with little or no public attention.

Our law fi rm can pursue legal action against the insurance companies for any rate increase associated with any home re-inspection during the past five years. You shouldn’t have to deal with an insurance company alone, nor should you be blind-sided by unscrupulous insurance companies.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury.

The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help rule-out concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage.

The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. Rarely, One may consider conservative/non-operative treatment for those

patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice.

Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my offi ce for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fi xation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to

athletics, also play a signifi cant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete.

Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner.

“I HAVE TRIED EVERY DIET KNOWN TO MAN (OR MOMS) THESE LAST FEW YEARS – TO NO AVAIL.”

Alyson continued to tell me her story. “For example, this past summer, my best friend fl ew me to their home in Sonoma for an entire month. We ate nothing but organic everything, lean protein, I drank 150 ounce-plus of water a day and did a high intensity workout every morning mixing up interval training with boot camp at her gym. In exactly 30 days – I lost a grand total of THREE pounds. I didn’t even lose the initial ‘water weight’ everyone else loses.”

I empathized, “It’s hard to stay motivated with minimal results.”

“I’m willing to starve myself, if that would work. I even did two rounds of hCG. My wallet’s lighter, but that’s about it.”

“The FDA recently published a website, www.fda.gov/hcgdiet, detailing how hCG diet products are illegal, and how restrictive diets such as that one can cause electrolyte disturbances,

an irregular heartbeat and are potentially fatal.” I continued, “But looking at your diet history, I don’t think the problem is one of eating too much.”

“Dr. Woliner, what else could it be? I have a friend that blew up taking Abilify for her depression, and another while on Actos for diabetes, but I’m not on any medications.”

“It’s true that many drugs have weight gain as a common side effect [1]. But there are other causes of weight gain. With your other symptoms of cold intolerance, fatigue, and constipation, I’m thinking that you have an untreated thyroid condition [2].”

“I begged my other doctors to treat me for that, but they all said no.”

“Some doctors focus too much on lab tests without considering the patient’s history and physical exam fi ndings [3].

Thyroid hormone resistance is more common than people realize.”

Alyson sat with a puzzled look on her face. “So, even if these doctors said my tests were normal, I might still have a thyroid problem? [4]”

“The word ‘normal’ has many meanings. There is a difference between ‘common’ and ‘optimal’ [5]. Rather than using a range that includes people who are overweight and being treated for high cholesterol and other conditions, perhaps it would be better to use narrower ranges of persons who feel ‘dandy’ [6].”

“Does anyone even use that word anymore?”

“My practice is built on patient-to-patient referrals. Just liking my bedside manner is not enough to convince your friends to see me. You have to glow. So yes, I do plan on making you feel dandy.”

After fi nishing Alyson’s physical exam, my staff used our Korr indirect calorimetry machine to measure her metabolic rate [7]. “You’re at ‘minus 20%’. That’s one of slowest metabolism’s I’ve ever seen!”

“How do we fi x that?”“I use a holistic approach that

combines behavior changes, diet, exercise, supplements, and of course medications [8,9]. I prefer to use T3 based drugs as they have been shown to cause signifi cantly more weight loss than T4 drugs such as Synthroid alone [10].”

As I ramped up Alyson’s dose of thyroid medication, her fatigue and other symptoms began to resolve. To be on the safe side, I periodically rechecked her EKG and bone density, which remained normal [11].

“Dr. Woliner, your scale says I only lost 49 pounds, but at home, naked, I’m down 51!”Dr. Kenneth Woliner is a board-certifi ed family physician in private practice in Boca Raton. Tony Cupelli started Caffe Europa over twenty-two years ago on Las Olas Boulevard. This authentic, traditional yet trendy Italian restaurant is truly family owned and operated. It is as if there is almost a piece of Europe on Las Olas.

Tony’s daughter Lisa, her brother Anthony and sister Rosanna were raised in the business. When you arrive to dine, you are instantly embraced and begin to feel that you are part of their inner circle.

For many years, Caffe Europa was located further west on Las Olas. The new location, closer to 9th Avenue, is more upscale. There are a few tables located outside, inside is a charming bar and wine area, an open dining room and a fabulous display case fi lled with homemade desserts that will constantly catch your eye.

The families Southern Italian style infl uences all the dishes prepared. Over seventy-fi ve percent of the staff were born in Italy and speak with beautiful accents. The atmosphere provides a feeling that you are dining inside a lovely Italian home.

Chef Pietro Rota continues to create dishes that were inspired by Tony’s original recipes. The approach using only the fi nest and freshest ingredients, many of them imported, is what keeps locals coming back to savor unique Italian main plates.

The chef has featured specials, four to fi ve, every night that will make your mouth water just reading the menu. Specials usually include a meat, pasta and a fi sh offering. If a creamy Saffron Risotto is available, don’t miss it! This dish is sautéed perfectly with shrimp,

scallops and zucchini and was incredible! It was extremely light and fl uffy and is not to be missed.

Appetizers to try include the Antipasto Italiano. The prosciutto is imported from Italy and is surrounded by fresh marinated mozzarella, olives, thin meats slices and chunks of parmigiano reggiano cheese. This is truly authentic.

The Broccoli Rabe e Italian Sausage is absolutely unique and out of this world! The garlic is mashed and delivers a light fl avor and the sausage is very thinly sliced without casing. This brings an extremely mild and light essence to the sausage. Great presentation, have a taste!

The menu offers many specialty pizzas. The Rustica was exceptional! Crispy, thin and juicy! The prosciutto, fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, shaved parmigiano reggiano with arugula was outstanding!

The pasta Lasagna alla Bolognese is homemade baked lasagna with meat in a béchamel sauce. Think heaven. Think velvety, smooth and light. This is a white sauce of butter, fl our, and milk or cream. This is a must have!

If you fancy Veal, the Vitello al Marsala is sautéed with baby mushrooms in a dry marsala wine sauce served with pasta. This quality veal is rich, fl avorful and milk-fed.

For fi sh lovers, the Dentice alla Livornese is a Snapper fi let sautéed with capers, olives, onions, garlic, white wine, pomodoro sauce and is served with pasta as well. The fi sh is sweet, and the calamata olives give this dish a full-bodied aromatic fl avor. Very tempting!

Every taste that crossed my palate was fantastic! But nothing is as tempting for me as homemade biscotti, gelato, blueberry cheesecake and a true favorite, frutti de bosco blackberry. It literally means “Fruits of the Forest (or Woods).” The true translation into English is mixed berries. The dessert plate was empty, not a morsel to be found. Scrumptious!

Mario Brandimarte, our server, was extraordinary. Born in Italy, a short stop in Jersey, he found himself on Las Olas Boulevard sharing a little piece of Italy like many others at Caffé Europa.

On any Friday you visit, you’ll most likely see Tony and fi fteen of his friends sharing “story time.” Food,

friends, Italian beer and so much more are inherent at the wonderful authentic Caffé Europa. Try a little piece of Europe on the boulevard, but make sure to use call ahead seating as there are no reservations.

BY BRUCE TURKEL

AND another thing...

THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT WORDS IN SALES

We’re sitting in the large conference room of a Fortune 500 company in a small town somewhere in the Northeast. The company has fi lled the room with their best thinkers — the president of industrial products, their CIO and CMO and the VPs of marketing, product development, IT, innovation, and consumer insight.

We’re here to present and discuss a new product and partnership opportunity that my client is pitching to the Fortune 500 group. And our team is no slouch, either. We’ve got the two founders of the company—who each have more than 20 years of entrepreneurial success in the market—our system designer, our carefully selected celebrity spokesman (who’s name and photo you’d recognize in an instant if I included it here), and me.

The best part is that the Fortune 500 team loves the concept. They understand how it makes sense for their business: They see the clear connection between what our product offers and what their consumers are looking for, and they’ve already fi gured out the value proposition and how it will both enhance customer loyalty and generate a brand new revenue stream.

In other words, they’re ready to buy. There’s just one little problem: My client won’t

shut up.She’s so excited about her business that she feels the

need to explain every detail of the plan to the group — even though they’ve already told us that they get it. And she’s so wrapped up in her unfolding rap that she’s not glancing in my direction or at her partner. If she did, she’d see that we’re both vainly trying to signal her to be quiet.

Finally the meeting ends, a good 45 or 50 minutes later than it should have. The folks from the Fortune 500 team are very polite and friendly as they walk us out and promise to be in touch. And when we pile into our rented mini van, the client high fi ves everyone on the team for a great presentation. On the way to the airport we stop for a celebratory dinner and a few great bottles of wine.

Of course you know what came next. A whole lot of nothing. The buyers didn’t call back when they said they would, and after some gentle prodding, the head of the Fortune 500 team

told my client that they’d decided to “back burner the project for a bit while they prioritize their activities.” That’s corpspeak for “don’t call us, we’ll call you.”

What happened? Simply put, it was a classic case of talking the buyer right out of the sale. What had seemed like a good idea at fi rst got more and more mundane and more and more complicated as the sales pitch meandered on and on. My client had violated the cardinal rule of sales: “always take yes for an answer.” Her prospect wanted to buy until she convinced them that they didn’t.

“Yes” is the most you can hope for in a presentation. “Yes” is what you’re working towards. “Yes” is what you want. Who cares if you spent weeks perfecting your presentation and you have to cut it short? Who cares if you’re only up to point four of a 17-point outline? Who cares if you fl ew halfway across the country to make your pitch? When your buyer is ready to sign on the dotted line, end the PowerPoint and turn the projector off. After all, showing your full dog-and-pony show isn’t the goal — getting to “Yes” is what you’re there for in the fi rst place.

Decisions — no matter how large — are often made without all the facts. And once the decision has been made to purchase, more facts can only do one of two things: enhance the decision or kibosh the deal. But when you’re already got a “Yes,” how much more can you enhance it? Why press your luck and risk snatching

defeat from the jaws of victory? The simple solution in sales presentations — especially the ones that are going well — is to let the buyer talk as much as possible. And to do that, just remember the two most important words in sales: Shut Up.

There. I’ve made my point and I’ll take my own advi…
