Follow a Certain Path in an Uncertain Future

College students today will likely change jobs 14-18 times during

their lives.* Given the complexity of life in the 21st century and

the global economy, an educated citizen needs to have the

capacity intellectually and emotionally to adjust to new fields,

environments and cultures.

A liberal arts education provides excellent preparation for a

career—the very best—because it teaches students how to learn,

how to think critically and how to communicate well. Westmont

students can enter any field and succeed because of the skills

they’ve acquired here.

Changing the Odds in Africa, One Face at a Time

From the couch of his apartment, Justin Zoradi ’04

started These Numbers Have Faces in 2008 to invest

in the future leaders of Africa. The organization

supports young people attending college in South

Africa, Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic

Republic of Congo, empowering them with the

skills to lead their countries.

“Westmont gave me an amazing ability to write

well and think critically,” says Justin, who majored

in communication studies. “From day one, my

professors told me that to whom much is given,

much is required, and they encouraged me to live

my life in service to others. I came initially to play

soccer. But then something happened, and I started

reading a lot—Westmont creates life-long learners,

innovators, and a passion for service.”

An Unlikely Mission Field: National Television

Megan Shrader Alexander ’02 is a TV correspon-

dent for “Inside Edition,” the most recognized news

magazine on television.

She covers everything from politics to medical

news to the dazzle of the red carpet. Megan has

covered the Super Bowl four times and is the only

TV reporter to swim with lions and orangutans. She

frequently appears on CNN’s “Showbiz Tonight”

and the Wendy Williams show. She founded the

Enlighten Film Club in New York City and also

acts, appearing in the film “Redeemed,” released

in April 2014. She is active in her church and splits

her time between New York City and Nashville with

her husband and son.

Interested in broadcast journalism, she took public

speaking at Westmont. “I thrived on delivering

speeches and winning over my audience,” she says.

Deciding she needed to understand the news to

report it better, she majored in political science and

served as Westmont College Student Association

president her senior year.

Loving Kids, Loving Christ in Denver’s Inner City

Westmont created a space for Pablo Otaola ’07, a

native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, to explore urban

issues and give voice to his own experience as an

immigrant Latino.

During his time at Westmont in San Francisco,

he interned with Young Life’s Latino Student

Staff initiative and read, “Being Latino in Christ.”

These experiences changed him and set his future

in motion.

Today Pablo works with inner-city youth and

is helping Young Life shape a national Latino

ministry. As a religious studies major at Westmont,

he dreamed of doing work like this. “I think success

is simply walking within the calling that you were

made to walk within,” he says. Pablo has succeeded

on all fronts in his life.

MEET MORGAN VIGIL ’11 | PH.D., COMPUTER

SCIENCE, UC SANTA BARBARA

As a Westmont student, Morgan Vigil ’11 organized

an after-school computer science program to

help local high school students. “My Westmont

professors see computer science as a way to serve

others,” she says.

She interned for Green Hills Software and then

worked for them as a test engineer before starting

a doctoral program in computer science at UC

Santa Barbara. Her research focuses on innovative

wireless networks and mobile systems to enable the

next three billion people to get online.

“Westmont inspired me by providing so many

models of servant leadership,” she says. “I learned

something absolutely new every single class period

and built resilience to facing the unknown—as a

researcher, I seek out the unknown. I feel so

confident in my calling. Even when my work seems

impossible, I am sustained by faith that God is using

my unique skills and background to be a good

steward of his kingdom.”

Many students discover passions they will spend the rest of their lives exploring—which leads some of them to graduate school.

MEET ANDREA OWEN ’10 | MEDICAL SCHOOL,

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS SOUTHWESTERN

Andrea Owen ’10 says she found wonderful,

lifelong friends at Westmont who not only love God

and love to learn, but apply their intelligence to

their faith. She appreciates the challenging classes

she took and the outstanding professors who

mentored her. “I wrestled with some important

questions during my time at Westmont,” she says.

She majored in Spanish and spent a semester in

Spain while pursuing a pre-med track. “My science

classes prepared me well for medical school at UT

Southwestern in Dallas, but I also received an

education of my whole person, being trained and

mentored intellectually, spiritually and socially.

Westmont gave me a foundation of knowledge and

the skills I need to succeed as a doctor.”

A transfer student from Cal State Fullerton, Hector

De Los Santos ’10 participated in Spring Sing, ran

track and invested heavily in new friendships. To

graduate on time, he had to apply himself his senior

year, pursuing relationships with professors,

leaning into challenging conversations with

classmates, and discovering a deep love of learning.

He excelled academically and received a

life-changing honor: Outstanding Senior in

Psychology. “The award opened new options for

me and challenged me to think bigger,” he says.

Today, Hector is pursuing a doctorate in clinical

psychology and serving as a teaching assistant at

Purdue University.

“I wouldn’t be here without my Westmont

professors,” he says. “Dr. Smith encouraged me

and saw my potential, and Dr. Rogers let me do

research with him. In every possible way, Westmont

prepared me for this path.”

It’s not just what you know—it’s also who you know. After graduating from Westmont, our students benefit from a well-rounded liberal arts education and a powerfully connected network of Westmont alumni. They pursue young alumni for jobs and new opportunities, always eager to assist a fellow Westmont alum.

In the heart of San Francisco, for example, exists a diverse and thriving network of young alumni. They’re pursuing different dreams and careers, but a common understanding and shared experience connects them: Westmont.

Writing the Next Chapter of Her Life

Diana Small ’09, a double major in English and

theater arts, wrote a bilingual play as a student,

which the theatre arts department produced

and directed. Three of her plays premiered at

Westmont after she graduated. She joined Lit

Moon Theatre Company as an actor and assistant

director, directed two plays for Westmont’s “Play

Beckett” festival, and wrote and performed original

music for “33 Swoons.”

She also led the girl-pop band Sheanderthal

and premiered the concept-rock album “Water

Will Rise” with two Westmont alumni. An MFA

candidate in playwriting and poetry at the Michener

Center for Writers at UT Austin, she premiered a

two-woman show, “Mad & A Goat,” in the Austin

Frontera Festival in January 2014.

“The theater department’s emphasis on multi-

disciplinary art-making, global collaboration,

social justice, and sincere and critical spiritual

inquiry has made a permanent impression on my

character as an artist and a Christian,” she says.

Cultivating Bay Area Job Growth from China

Nate Williams ’10 lives in Beijing and works for

ChinaSF, a public-private partnership under the

San Francisco Mayor’s Office that supports Chinese

investment and business expansion in the Bay Area

and helps local companies grow their business in

China.

He held an internship with ChinaSF during his time

with Westmont in San Francisco. An economics and

business major, he spent a semester studying at

Xiamen University in China and a summer serving

in China with Opportunity International.

He’s invested time in learning the language and

developing professional relationships in Beijing.

After meeting Muslim refugees in China and visiting

North Korea, Nate feels greater appreciation for

his experience at Westmont. “Faith played such a

central role in my education,” he says. “I live in a

country where that’s illegal.”

WESTMONT 15

Alec Avedissian ’08 packed a lot into four years:

a semester at an international business school in

Spain; a Westmont in San Francisco internship

with an investment bank; international marketing

for an automobile company during a summer in

Indonesia; a practicum with a venture firm; and

a summer internship in Amgen’s finance group.

On Westmont’s Emmaus Road trip to Rwanda in

2005, he glimpsed how other people live. “That’s

when I began thinking of ways to make a difference

through my passion: business.”

All these experiences led he and two friends to

launch a company with a conscious—Rareform—

which manufactures surfboard bags from recycled

billboards. Alec attributes some of his success to

networking. “You can call anyone who went to

Westmont and make an automatic connection,”

he says.

“You can call anyone who went

to Westmont and make an

biggest benefits of Westmont is the

meaningful friendships you make.”
