Westminster’s populationThe Office for National Statistics’ Neighbourhood Statistics website enables you to find out detailed information on populations for various areas. Below are some key facts about Westminster’s population. The population makeup of an area, e.g. age, gender, ethnicity and levels of deprivation can determine the type of health issues it may face. This has a large influence over the types of health services (including physical activity) required and how best to provide them to the local population.

Chelsea Barracks.• There is a large population of young working residents, with high levels of migration in and out of the borough.• There is a smaller proportion of residents from White British, Black and Asian ethnic groups compared to London and

more from the Other / Mixed category and 2.5 times more from the White Other category (including those from Europe, Ireland, America and Australia).

• 86% of the borough’s state school children are from ethnic groups other than White British.*source: London Borough of Westminster JSNA 2012

Levels of deprivation in WestminsterInformation about the deprivation of the area you’re working in can also help target your work. Deprived areas are likely to have less income so may require cheaper activities. These areas also face more health issues than less deprived areas. The wards with the most deprived areas in Westminster are Queen’s Park and Church Street.• In 2010, Westminster was ranked the 87th most deprived

local authority in the country, with significant areas of deprivation in the north and Church Street, and pockets in the south.

• The proportion of private rented housing is extremely high compared to London and England.

• The borough has the second highest life expectancy in the country. However there are significant areas of poorer health in the more deprived parts of the borough bringing large health inequalities.

• The average life expectancy is 83.8 years for men and 86.7 for women, the 2nd highest in the county.

• Westminster was the second fastest improving borough in the country over the last decade, with an increase of 7.5 years for men and 4.9 years for women.

• Westminster has the biggest variation in life expectancy across the social gradient in the country with an absolute difference in life expectancy between the most and least deprived areas to be 16.9 years for men and 9.7 for women. The gap has widened in the last 5 years, especially for men.

• The principle cause of premature death in Westminster is cancer, followed by cardiovascular disease.

• A significant number of people also die from respiratory diseases .

• Get Active London (GAL) is an online club and activity finder. The tables show the numbers of facilities registered with GAL.

• Clubmark is Sport England’s quality club accreditation scheme. Clubs which have Clubmark have proved they offer the right environment which ensures the welfare of members and encourages everyone to enjoy sport and stay involved throughout their lives.
