Westie Updates Vol. 2 No. 8 August 6, 2015 President’s Message Dear fellow WHWTCA members and friends, It’s August already and time to start thinking about preparations for your week at the National in Pa!! In this newsletter you will find lots of details, reservation forms and information to help you plan your week in advance. Please note that there are some changes in our “usual” schedule and make note of them so there will be no unexpected surprises. This year we are adding CGC testing at our Kimberton site on Thursday October 1st. Please make sure you contact Angie Jennings to reserve your time for this event. Angie is making herself available to help you practice ahead of time so don’t miss out on the opportunity! We will be holding our inaugural Quality Westie Evaluations on Wednesday September 30 th at the Kimberton Hall. Details are elsewhere in this newsletter and on the website. This will be a wonderful opportunity for members wishing to obtain a Quality Westie Certificate on their dogs. Wednesday evening we will also be holding the Health Seminar at the Kimberton site. This is going to be an excellent seminar and I hope to see many of you attending. We will have even more details about our National in the next Westie Updates so stay tuned. I would be remiss if I did not thank the West Highland White Terrier Club of Southeast Texas for hosting a wonderful Roving in Houston in July. These hardworking members were in high gear to make sure all attendees were well taken care of. It was a full schedule of events with some wonderful opportunities to socialize with members we don’t always get to see. Their trophies were lovely and creative and true treasures for the lucky winners! Thank you to all of you for making it a very special event!! Hope to see many of you in September/October! My best to all, Lee Lee Trudeau [email protected] Notes from our recording secretary Hello All, The new Membership List (Members Only section of the website) and the Breeders List are now up on the website.

The Imprint is coming this August!!!

Westie Imprint

information

The Board of the West Highland White Terrier Club of America has worked diligently to upgrade and preserve the Westie Imprint that we have all come to love and cherish. The new Imprint will be produced in a larger 8 X 11 format & will offer both outside & inside color pages. A lottery system was used to fill the preferred color positions in the inaugural Summer issue and a few remaining preferred inside color pages of the Fall and Winter issues. In addition to preferred color, regular Black and White advertising will also be accepted at a cost of $95 @ page. The quarterly deadlines for submission of ads and articles for the publication are as follows: Summer May 31, Fall August 31 and Winter November 30. ** Additional winners of the inside color pages were drawn in order to fill any preferred pages in the Fall and Winter issues that are not taken by Roving or National Specialty winners. If you entered the Lottery you made a commitment to advertise in the upcoming Imprints, which is necessary to ensure the future of the Imprint.

Versatile dog

program update!!!!

The Versatile Dog Program has been updated to incorporate additional titling activities, giving Westies more ways to earn the awards while maintaining a basic equivalence with the current system. The program now includes Therapy, Nosework, Flyball, Coursing, Barn Hunt and the optional titling classes in Obedience. The current point system was reviewed and the Rally and Obedience titles were adjusted to give distinction to the skills required for obedience. VDA awarded in 2015 will be based on the old system for titles earned up to July 31, 2015. All subsequent awards will be based on the new system.

Versatile Dog Award Rules:

o Points are calculated by category – For categories with multiple activities, this is the sum of the highest level plus one-half the points for the other activities in that category. Example: Dog has a UD, RAE, ThDD. All 3 titles are within the companionship category. UD is the highest level and counts for 8 points, RAE counts for 3 points (half of 6 points), and ThDD counts for 2.5 points (half of 5 points) for a total of 13.5 points for the category.

o Total Points is the sum of points for the five categories. o A Threshold Category is one with 3 or more points in a single activity. This

requires the dog to demonstrate proficiency in an activity to demonstrate versatility.

o A Championship, Earthdog title OR at least 7 total points in any category is required for all awards.

The Versatile Dog Award (VDA) requires at least one of the following:

3 categories and 9 points,

2 threshold categories and 10 points and at least 7 points in Conformation or Earthdog,

2 threshold categories and 12 points and at least 9 points in any category.

The Versatile Dog Excellent Award (VDX) requires at least one of the following:

4 threshold categories and 16 points,

3 threshold categories and 17 points and at least 7 points in Conformation or Earthdog or at least 9 points in any category.

The Master of Versatility (MV) requires at least one of the following:

5 threshold categories and 23 points,

Page 8: Westie Updates · Back Cover $ 375 Inside Front Cover $ 350 Inside Back Cover $ 350 Color page $ 250 Black & White page $ 95 Business Card $ 40 2.125" X 3.75" Business Card 1 Yr $

4 threshold categories and 24 points and at least 7 points in Conformation or Earthdog or at least 9 points in any category,

3 threshold categories and 25 points and at least 7 points in Conformation or Earthdog or at least 9 points in any category.

The Master of Versatility 2 (MV2) requires at least one of the following:

5 threshold categories and 29 points,

4 threshold categories and 30 points and at least 7 points in Conformation or Earthdog or at least 9 points in any category.

The Master of Versatility (MV3) requires at least one of the following:

5 threshold categories and 35 points,

4 threshold categories and 36 points and at least 7 points in Conformation or Earthdog or at least 9 points in any category.

The Master of Versatility (MV4) requires at least one of the following:

5 threshold categories and 41 points.

Examples:

o Versatile Dog (VD) o 3 categories and 9 points from CH CD NAP or BN RN ThDN TD JE. The latter

shows how points combine within a category, 2 for the RN plus ½ for the BN and ½ for the ThDN.

o 2 categories and 10 points from CH ME. This shows how a high level accomplishment in Earthdog can be combined with just one other category.

o Versatile Dog Excellent (VDX) o 4 categories and 16 points from GCH RA OAP OJP RATO or CH RAE ThD NAJ

JE. The latter shows how points combine within a category, 6 for the RAE plus 2/2 for the ThD.

o Master of Versatility o 5 categories and 23 points from CH RA TDX AXP AJP JE

Fine Print: VD Awards will be awarded at the 2015 banquet based on the old system for titles earned up to July 31, 2015. All subsequent awards will be based on the new system.

o No VD Award based on the old rules will be retracted after the change. But some dogs may find they will have an easier or harder time earning their next award level.

Conformation Top 10 levels: o Level 5 is the top 10 dog or top 10 bitch in the calendar year "AKC TopDog

By Breeds using Breed totals" report. o Level 7 is the Top 10 Westies (inter-sex) in the calendar year "AKC TopDog

Page 9: Westie Updates · Back Cover $ 375 Inside Front Cover $ 350 Inside Back Cover $ 350 Color page $ 250 Black & White page $ 95 Business Card $ 40 2.125" X 3.75" Business Card 1 Yr $

By Breed Using All-Breed Totals o Level 9 is the Top 10 All Terriers Dogs or Bitches in the calendar year "AKC

TopDog By Group Using All-Breed Total".

Earthdog 10+10 requires 10 extra SE legs & 10 extra ME legs not necessarily at the same test.

A dog that achieves these requirements while one or more of his owners were not members needs to earn at least one further title while all his co-owners are members.

All titles must be AKC titles to be counted except Nosework titles which must be NACSW titles

Members who do not choose to have AKC recognition of Therapy, Flyball and Barn Hunt titles, or whose Flyball or Therapy accomplishment predates AKC’s recognition, or who earn Nosework titles must provide written proof of the accomplishment including the dog’s AKC registered name and the date of the accomplishment.

Members must provide documentation for Conformation Top 10 accomplishments or for Earthdog 10+10 from AKC reports.

Members should notify the performance committee in writing or email when their dogs earn a VD Awards to be sure the Club Database is up to date.

WHWTCA Quality

Westie Program

QUALITY WESTIE UPDATE – AUGUST 1

The first live Quality Westie event will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at the Kimberton Fire Hall starting at 8:45 am. The 3 evaluators for this event will be Sandy Campbell, Melinda Lyon and Gerry Meisels. Sandy was the sweepstakes judge at the Roving in Houston last month (July), while Melinda and Gerry are both AKC licensed judges, approved to judge Westies. All 3 are long-time WHWTCA members and very experienced and knowledgeable Westie breeders. Entry forms are available on the WHWTCA website: (http://www.westieclubamerica.com/qwp/entryform.html) The entry fee is $75. Send the completed form and your check by September 15 to Wayne Kompare, 4836 Bay Shore Rd., Sarasota, FL 34234. Entry submissions will be on a first come/first served basis. Since this is the very first QW event, entries will be limited to 18 Westies (future QW events will allow 24 entries). If more than 18 entries are submitted, entries will be limited to WHWTCA members and only 1 entry per owner will be permitted. All dogs entered must be at least 18 months old, spayed/neutered Westies are permitted and dogs should be clean and have no foreign material in their coats. No professional handlers permitted unless they are members of the WHWTCA and have been the sole owner of the Westie for the past 12 months. Each evaluation session, lasting approximately 45 minutes, will have 3 evaluations done simultaneously on 3 different Westies by the 3 evaluators. Each evaluator will spend approximately 10 minutes on each dog, followed by 5 minutes for a group gaiting and mingling exercise. Dogs then exit the ring while the evaluators spend 10 minutes completing the detailed 2 page scoring sheets. Entrants will receive the original signed scoring sheets from each of the evaluators; the evaluators and the WHWTCA will also have a copy of the scoring sheets. Evaluators are encouraged to interact with the entrants while evaluating the dogs.

Other key points: 1. There will be NO catalog or listing of dogs entered or owners name published for each evaluation event. All entrants will be emailed or snail mailed the time and location for the event. 2. The only results that will be published are the names of the Westies that passed and obtained the QW title and their owners’ name . No scores will be published. Dogs and owners names who did not pass will not be published anywhere by the WHWTCA or the QW committee. 3. Dogs who received a score of 75 or greater from 2 evaluators will have one more chance to attain the QW title, by entering at another QW event where a different evaluator might give the dog their third passing score of 75 or greater. Quality Westie events are NON-COMPETITIVE events. Their sole purpose is education of the Westie standard. Raffle for Barbara Hands oil painting To benefit the QW program, a beautiful 12” x 10” oil painting by Barbara Hands , signed and dated 1997, and titled “Mother and Pups”

has been donated by a QW friend, and will be raffled at the WHWTCA annual dinner on Friday, October 2, 2015. Raffle tickets are $10/each or 3 for $25. There will be a maximum of 350 tickets sold. We will also have prints of the painting available for sale by mail or at the Montgomery dinner. The prints com in two different sizes (the large has 12” x 9” image size, and the price is $100: the small has 8 ¾” x 6 ½” image size, and the price is $50). Both sizes are in very small limited editions (large is an edition of 25, and the small is an edition of 10), and all prints are pencil signed and numbered by the artist. If you wish to purchase raffle tickets and/or a print of “Mother and Pups” by mail (note: raffle tickets and prints will also be available at the annual Montgomery dinner ), please indicate how many raffle tickets you wish to purchase, and/or what size print you wish to purchase on a sheet of paper, and include your name and snail mail address and your contact information – either phone number or email address , and mail it along with your check for the appropriate amount, payable to WHWTCA to: Wayne Kompare, 4836 Bay Shore Rd., Sarasota, FL 34234.

QW SCORING

EXPLAINED

Explanation of the 10 point scoring system 10 categories x 10 points/each = 100 points maximum. The QW passing score is 75 or above from 3 different evaluators (in no more than 2 QW events). A Westie who passes will receive a certificate from the WHWTCA, and the QW title. Evaluators may use ½ point increments. 10 Outstanding. As close to ideal as can be expected. 9 Excellent. Very high in quality; probably not commonly seen. 8 Very good. Obvious general quality; any flaws are slight. 7 Good. Primarily quality, although may have minor faults/flaws. 6 Fair. Somewhat better than merely acceptable. More merit than fault. 5 Acceptable. Generally fulfills the basics, but may be:

a) Overall only > adequate in quality for that trait, or: b) May be a balance of both virtues and faults in that category.

4 Overall, more flaws/faults than merit in that category/trait. 3 Very obvious faults or unsoundness; strongly resembles trait of another breed. 2 or 1 Almost wholly deficient in merit; trait present but seriously incomplete, incorrect or unsound. 0 Complete absence of trait; so unsound as to be useless.

A qualifying score for QW must have no category scored 0 – 2, and no two categories scored 4 or less, in addition to the required total score of 75 or greater.

IT’S A WRAP! By Bebe Pinter It’s a wrap! If you were able to attend the West Highland White Terrier Club of America (WHWTCA) National Roving 2015 hosted by the West Highland White Terrier Club of Southeast Texas (WHWTCSET) in Houston, thank you for coming. We had a fun time planning and hosting this event for your enjoyment. Join us in a big thank you to the Lone Star Roving 2015 Committee and a look at behind the scenes: By serving as Communications/Facilitator and Assistant Show Chairman, I had the opportunity to work with everyone. My job was to assure that “the right hand knew what the left hand was doing” and visa versa using conference calls emails, Facebook, websites, etc. The Facebook page WHWTCA Roving 2015 and the WHWTCA website and newsletter were important communication tools for me. Our shared goal was to plan a Roving that we all would want to attend. Hospitality Room—Trinity Valley West Highland White Terrier Club (TVWHWTC) accepted our invitation to coordinate the hospitality room represented by Cindy Blasko, Kris Weisenborn with Becky Koester. Cindy and Kris undertook the planning for food, signage, tables and hosts. Becky managed the room reservation. During hospitality hours, the room was abuzz with conversation and people enjoying the many refreshments. Thank you Cindy, Kris, and Becky!

Hotel Liaison—Paula Cohen was the club’s liaison with the host hotel. She monitored the contracted services with the hotel and assured that reservations were honored at the agreed rate. Paula responded quickly to solve any problems brought to her attention. Thank you, Paula! Health Seminar—Kay McGuire, DVM, arranged for a detailed seminar on various methods of breeding including transcervical insemination presented by Kirk Esmond, DVM, a Texas A & M veterinary school classmate. Kay coordinated location and equipment as well. Thank you, Kay! Silent/Live Auction—Linda Wible gathered and organized donations for the auction and implemented her setup plan at the French Corner Restaurant. We appreciate the many people who donated items and congratulate the winning bidders. Randell Dickerson graciously served as auctioneer. Thank you, Linda! Raffle—Jennifer Garrison coordinated the raffle. Thank you to Lynne Bryant and Diana Spivey for donating the gorgeous custom embroidery quilt and shams and to Hunting Horn’s Kathy Norris and Helmet Erhardt for donating the 14K London blue topaz pendant with chain. The raffle items were gorgeous and we thank everyone who purchased raffle tickets. Thank you, Jennifer! Reservations for Dinner—JoAnn and David DeAtkine collected names and money for the dinner. Ninety-five people attended. Oh! What a night we had! So much fun and the eating was good according to those 95 people. Thanks to Jennifer Garrison as liaison with the restaurant, Linda Wible for creating the trophy and dinner centerpieces, and Michael Miller for providing the microphone/audio system. Thank you JoAnn and David! Roving Reporters—Bebe Pinter and Mellodee White photographed and posted candid shots, winners, and catalog results to the Facebook page WHWTCA Roving 2015. David Gignac joined the reporter forces making it three instead of two. The idea was for those Westie lovers who could not attend to feel as if had somehow experienced Roving with us. Thank you, Mellodee and David! Show Chairman—Cathy De La Garza served as show chairman so those of us with Westies could exhibit. Cathy is a valued member of our WHWTCSET, an AKC judge and delegate, and president of the Galveston Kennel Club. Thank you, Cathy! Judy White (Houston) and Stevann Wilson stewarded the gate table and Cathy Blacklock served as ring steward and helped to coordinate the show with AKC. Thank you one and all! Treasurer—Felecia Fitzgerald, CPA, compiled a budget, tracked income and expenditures, collected auction payments, and paid expenses. She will provide the final Roving Financial Report for the WHWTCSET board to share with WHWTCA. Felecia is also a superb needlepoint artist and completed two custom pieces for fundraising. Thank you, Felecia! Trophy Chair—Kay McGuire, DVM and Jaime Miller worked together. Kay chose the items for trophies and began during Montgomery 2014 to enlist sponsors for Roving and the WHWTCSET specialty. Jaime organized and distributed the trophies at the shows. Thank you trophy sponsors for your generosity. Thank you, Kay and Jaime! Welcome Bags—Randell Dickerson, working with Susan Tate, gathered items and prepared 100 welcome bags. Thank you, Randell and Susan! Thank you to our club president Jaime Miller for her leadership and to the members of the club who filled in the gaps to make this Roving a memorable event! Congratulations to all the winners! With five days of shows and four days of sweepstakes there were many opportunities for exhibitors to show their Westies and for us to watch them. For a listing of results go to www.onofrio.com and click on results for Beaumont Kennel Club. This was the WHWTCSET’s third time to host a national roving. The Westies were all beautiful. We enjoyed visiting with everyone and letting you experience southern hospitality “deep in the heart of Texas” style. Please come again!

The AKC Outstanding

Sportsmanship Award

In the American Kennel Club's ongoing efforts to recognize and celebrate its volunteer club members, The AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award program was established in 2006 to provide each member club with an AKC Medallion to award to one of its own on a yearly basis.

This award honors those individuals who deserve special recognition that have made a difference in the sport of purebred dogs, embodied the AKC Code of Sportsmanship, and have been an active and valued member of an AKC member club. Medallions are awarded solely at the club's discretion.

If you would like to nominate a Member of the West Highland White Terrier Club of America for the 2015 Outstanding Sportsmanship Award, please share information about your nominee and the reason you would like them to be considered for the award. Email the information to our Corresponding Secretary, Kristine Tarrer at [email protected] by no later than September 25th, 2015.

HEALTH COMMITTEE

CERF Eye Clinic

Where: Kimberton Fire Company, Kimberton, Pennsylvania

When: Saturday, October 3, 2015, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

The WHWTCA’s Health Committee in conjunction with the Westie Foundation

of America is pleased to announce a CERF eye clinic in conjunction with the

club’s National Specialty. The cost per Westie is only $25 for WHWTCA

members and $35 for non-members. Members of the Board of Directors and the

Health Committee are proud to be able to offer this service to club members at

such a nominal fee.

The CERF exam is one of the three health clearances needed in order to have

your Westie assigned a CHIC number from the Canine Health Information

Center. Again, the three things that we recommend testing are patellas for

luxating patellas; eyes for cataracts or other ocular diseases; and hips for hip

dysplasia and Legg Calves Perthes.

For more information concerning health clearances, please contact:

Kay McGuire, DVM, Chair

WHWTCA Health Committee

Email: [email protected]

PRE-REGISTRATION AVAILABLE NOW

Please complete the CERF Clinic registration form found at

www.westieclubamerica.com/montgomery and click on CERF Clinic.

Instructions for returning the form can be found there. Pre-reservations close on

September 23, 2015. Please DO NOT mail your CERF application to Kay

McGuire.

Note: Examinations are by appointment. We should be able to accommodate

some “walk-ins” but highly recommend early registration to avoid

disappointment.

The next activity for the West Highland White Terrier Club of Puget Sound (WHWTCOPS) will be: The annual Westie Fun Daze on August 15th from 9-1 at Marymoor Park, in Redmond, WA. I’m also getting confused I assume this is just for update on activity – when do we need a report for the Imprint?
