A new $30 million recreation center and fi eldhouse is presently under construction on Western’s campus.

Western State Colorado University, the highest four-year institution of higher learning in the United States at 7,703 feet above sea level, opened its doors to students 102 years ago this fall and celebrated a century of educating educators two academic years ago.

Western is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, with academic programs that take advantage of the natural laboratory that surrounds campus. The college has the only college-based Mountain Rescue Team in the nation and is consistently ranked by National Geographic and Fly Rod and Reel Magazine as one of the top colleges for students to experience outdoor recreation.

Crested Butte Mountain Resort and Monarch Mountain are both within an hour drive of campus for winter sports, and Hartman Rocks features a range of activites in the summer. The City of Gunnison hosted the start of the “Queen’s Stage” of the USA Pro Cycling Tour, which several international cycling experts called one of the toughest stages to receive certifi cation.

The Mountaineers have maintained one of the top small college athletic programs in the nation, with the fourth-highest average in the history of the Learfi eld Sports Directors’ Cup. With 89 RMAC championships, 105 individual national championships and 15 national team championships, the Mountaineers have been building “Champions Out of Thin Air” since the college opened in 1911. The programs have maintained one of the top graduation rates in Division II when compared to the student body, with several programs outpacing the national average many times over.

WRESTLINGPAUL WRIGHT GYM

Built in 1951 and renovated several times since, Paul Wright Gym boasts a capacity of 1,800 spectators. At 7,728 feet above sea level, the facil-ity is the highest collegiate gym in the world.

The Mountaineer wrestling team has won more than 80 percent of its home duals over the last 10 seasons, and have won nine of their last 11 duals coming into tonight’s dual against Colorado Mesa. Western has posted a winning record at home in nine of the last ten seasons.

In 1960, the current swimming pool was added to the facility. In 1965, the wrestling room was added on the east side to help support the back-to-back college divi-sion national championship teams of 1963 and 1964.

In 1998, a major 40,000 square foot renovation was completed that added a 2,500 square foot weight room and a locker facility for visiting teams and the Western State student body. Along with the south addition, six classrooms were included that allowed the Recreation and Exercise Science Department to conduct all its classes in one building.

After the 1998 renovation, the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame Room was completed with meeting facilities and trophy cases in 1999.

In 2008, a new gym fl oor and retractable baskets were installed. New bleachers were installed in 2005.

The facility is undergoing major renovations with the new fi eldhouse and recreation center being added to the southwest portion of the building. The facility will feature a regular 200-meter track for collegiate and high school meets, expanded offi ce areas for the Mountaineer athletic department, a new weight train-ing facility, an additional training room, a new High Altitude Performance Lab and a student recreation facility on the south end of the building. The project

is expected to be competed in early 2014.

The building is named after Paul W. Wright, who spent 38 years as a professor, coach and administrator at Western State. He also served as judge and mayor in Gunnison and was instrumental in establishing ski-ing as an NCAA sport.

WRESTLINGMILES VAN HEEHead CoachMiles Van Hee is in his 17th season as head wrestling coach of the Western State Colorado University Moun-taineers in 2013. He was the assistant coach at Western from 1993-1997. Last season, Van Hee’s team fi nished as the second ranked NWCA All-Academic team.

In 2004, Van Hee was named the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year and has been cited by Na-tional Wrestling Hall of Fame – Colorado Chapter as “Colorado College Coach of the Year” on fi ve occasions (2001, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011), more than any other collegiate coach in Colorado. He’s a three-time RMAC Coach of the Year (2005, 2009, 2010). In 1995, Van Hee was named the Assistant Collegiate Wrestling Coach of the Year for all levels by Wrestling USA Magazine.

Van Hee has coached six NCAA Division II National Champions - Shane Carwin (1999), Dave Vondy (2001), Jared Haberman (2004), Adrian Jiron (2004) and Dono-van McMahill (2010 and 2011) – 14 NCAA Division II National Finalists, 46 NCAA Division II All-Americans, and 50 NWCA All-Academic wrestlers.

Van Hee’s dual record for Western Wrestling is 139-81-5 and his teams have fi nished in the Top 25 every year and in the top 10 eight times. In 2004, the Mountaineers fi nished fourth at the NCAA Division II Championships, and fi fth at the 2011 championships. The Mountaineers won 16 straight home duals from 2008-09 through the 2010-11 season.

Van Hee wrestled for the Mountaineers from 1990-93. He was a two-time All-American and RMAC champion, and a NCAA Division II West Regional champion. In 1992, he was selected as a member of the USA-Colle-giate Cultural Exchange Team that toured Poland and Germany.

Originally from Fowler, Colo., Van Hee also was three-time high school state champion at Fowler High School and an Asics Junior National All-American and Cadet All-American. He holds a bachelor’s degree in technol-ogy from Western State (1994) and earned his master’s degree in sports management from the University of Northern Colorado in 1997.

Van Hee is also the Director of the Rocky Mountain Wrestling Camp – which is the longest running and one of the most successful wrestling camps in America. The

late legend-ary Western State wrestling coach, Tracy Borah, started the Rocky Mountain Wrestling Camp in 1963. Last sum-mer, Van Hee and his camp staff brought in over 1,000 wrestlers and coaches from over 70 high schools and 14 states to the Rocky Moun-tains for four sessions that included an individual camp, an intensive camp and two team camps.

He and his wife, Tonya - who is the Director of Alumni Relations for Western – have two boys, Bryson and Jared.

WRESTLING ASSISTANT COACHESCHARLIE PIPHER

Pipher is beginning his third sea-son as an assistant wrestling coach for the Mountaineers in 2013.

An almuni of Western State Colorado University, Pipher had a tremendous wrestling career from

2004-2011. As a Mountaineer he was a three-time All-American and a two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champion at 184 pounds. In 2011, Pipher fi nished second at the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Pipher graduated from Western State College in 2011 with a degree in Business and Exercise and Sport Psy-chology in 2011.

CRAIG OTTO

Craig Otto is in his 15th season as assistant coach for the Western State Colorado University wres-tling program in 2013.

A native of Forest Grove, Ore.,

Otto wrestled for the Mountaineers from 1996-98 and was a three-time All-American. He was the 1997 Colorado Collegiate champion and was a part of the American wrestling teams that toured Bulgaria and Colombia.

Otto graduated from Western State College with a degree in kinesiology.

MATT JOHNSON

Matt Johnson is beginning his fi fth season as an assistant coach with the Mountaineer wrestling program in 2013 after spending 15 seasons at Wyoming, the last six as the Cowboys’ top assis-tant.

Johnson spent three seasons at Iowa State and won three Big Eight titles,

three All-America honors at 177 bounds and fi nished runner-up in 1991. He earned the Gregorian Award at the 1991 national championships for pinning three opponents in 15:15. He compiled a 120-27-1 record with the Cyclones, including a pair of 30-win seasons.

Johnson also competed at three National Wrestling Coaches All-Star Meets, the most for any Cyclone in program his-tory, and went 2-1 in those meets. On the international scene, Johnson fi nished in the top seven of the U.S. Open Freestyle Tournament three times. A native of Brighton, Colo., Johnson won two Colorado State Championships and four freestyle titles. Johnson fi nished high school with an overall record of 114-19. Johnson also fi nished second at the Junior Nationals in 1988.

Johnson’s ties with the Mountaineers start with his father, Jim, who earned All-America honors in 1970 under Tracy Borah. Johnson graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1996 with a degree in history. He married his wife, Jodi, in August of 1998. The couple have three daughters, Sarah Marie, Rylie Lynn and Katelyn Rose.

JESSE CRUZ

Cruz is in his third season as an assis-tant wrestling coach for the Western State Colorado University Mountain-eers in 2013. A Western graduate of the 2011 class, Cruz was a three-time NCAA II National Qualifi er and an NCAA II All-American in 2011 at 133lbs for the Mountaineers. Cruz was also a

four-time NCAA II Super 4/RMAC placer and a runner-up. Originally from Colorado Springs, Cruz was a High School State Champ for Wasson High School and was recruited to Western State in 2006. Cruz fell in love with the beauty of Gunnison immediately and graduated with a degree in Exercise Sports Science and a minor in Business Adminis-tration.

Jesse currently works for the Western Alumni offi ce and enjoys being outside in the Gunnison valley as much as possible.

John Nelson is an accomplished professional cowboy poet with many published pieces of work. John Nelson wrote “Mountaineers” in honor of the 50-year anniversary of the Mountaineer Athletic Association.

A Western State student-athlete from 1966-1970, John was a two-sport athlete, participating in football and wrestling. John Nelson is also the owner of Gunnison Country Guide and Outfi tting, a long-time Mountaineer Athletic Association Corporate Partner.

The Mountaineer Athletic Association (MAA) is celebrating 50 years working with Western Athletics in 2013-14. The fi rst mention of the MAA can be traced back to the days of Head Football Coach O. Kay Dalton with the creation of the Century Club in the 1963-64 academic year. For just $100 each year, members could enjoy all the benefi ts or supporting the Mountaineers and the various sport programs that existed in the 1960s.

The Century Club maintained its current membership level - $100 a year – until infl ation and the need for additional funds encouraged the creation of different membership levels. The Century Club was renamed the Mountaineer Century Club in the 1989-90 academic year, and then adopted the current Mountaineer Athletic Association title in 1995.

The MAA corporate partnership program started a year later to create additional means for businesses to become involved at a larger level and to create additional marketing avenues for those businesses. From the original 32 members in the 1996, the corporate partnership program has grown to 68 local and regional businesses and corporations in 2012-13.

In 2001, the Sam Boyd Crab Feed, Auction Dinner and Casino Night was started and has raised nearly $280,000 in 12 years. More than $29,000 was raised for student-athletes last year.

Last year, more than $302,000 was raised for the scholarship needs of Western State Colorado University student-athletes with the support of 339 corporate and individual members.

Over the past 50 years, the MAA has raised millions of dollars for Western student-athletes, making it one of the most succesful booster clubs in the nation.

Among public NCAA Division II institutions with football, the Mountaineers continue to be among the national leaders in private support, in part from the generosity of the MAA members.

As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the MAA, fi rst-time and long-term members alike will receive benefi ts through-out 2013-14. Both individual MAA members and corporate partners have the opportunity to join this exclusive club, honoring the Golden Anniversary of the MAA.

To become a member of the Mountaineer 50-Year Club, 2012-13 members gain access by increasing their donation by $50 or more. If any new individual member joins the MAA at the $500 level or higher, they will also receive membership in the 50-Year Club.

For corporate partners wanting to join the 50-Year Club, 2012-13 corporate partners must increase their MAA donation by $500 or more. For any new MAA corporate partner to gain access to the 50-Year Club, they must join at the $2,500 or greater level.

WRESTLINGRULES FOR BOOSTERS

Everyone associated with the Western State Colorado University Athletics program (coaches,staff, student-athletes, boosters) has the responsibility to comply with NCAA rules involving prospects and student-athletes. Mountaineer athletic support groups are a very valuable part of the Western Athletic Department. All present and past members of these groups are considered boosters and therefore, are held to compliance with these standards. Please review the information on what boosters may or may not do, and ask before you act.

Recruiting GuidelinesA Booster may:• contact a prospect as long as the booster had an established relationship prior to the student becoming a prospect and as long as there is no attempt to recruit the prospect for Western;• watch a prospect’s athletic contest (but not have contact with that prospect or the prospect’s parents); and• provide names, statistics, newspaper articles, etc. of outstanding prospects from the booster’s local area to Western coaches and staff (but not contact that prospect’s coach or school offi cials in order to gather materials pertaining to the prospect’s athletic or academicabilities).

A Booster may not:• contact (telephone or in writing/e-mail) a prospect or his/her parents in person, for the purposes of recruiting the prospect;• make contact with a prospect or his/her parents on or off the Western campus for the purposes of recruiting his/her to Western;• mail anything to a prospect, including press releases, media guides, posters, schedule cards, etc.;• approach a Western coach who is with a prospect either on or off the Western campus;• contact or request anything (transcript, videotape) from a prospect’s counselor or coach in order to evalu-ate the athletic or academic ability of a prospect; and• provide any extra benefi t to a prospect or his/her family or friends.

Rules Regarding current Western Student-AthletesA Booster may:• provide an occasional family home meal to a student-athlete or an entire team. Such meal must take place in the home, not in a restaurant. The meal may be catered.• provide employment under certain circumstances to current studentathletes. Student-athletes must be paid the established rate (in the area for similar services) for work actually performed.

A Booster may not:• provide extra benefi ts to any student-athlete andhis/her family;• use the name or picture of a student-athlete to directly or indi-rectly promote the sale or use of a commercial product or service;• provide free or reduced rate housing for a studentathlete or his/her family;

• hire a student-athlete to house-sit;• provide an honorarium to a student-athlete who has been approved for a speaking en-gagement. Student-athletes may receive only actual and necessary travel expenses to pre-approved speaking engagements; and• provide any extra benefi t to a current student-athlete.

Student-Athlete EmploymentA student-athlete may be employed during or outside the academic year, provided:• The student-athlete’s compensation does not include any remuneration for value or utility that the student-athlete may have for the employer because of the publicity, reputation, fame or personal followingthat he or she has obtained because of athletics ability;• The student-athlete is compensated only for work actually performed;• The student-athlete is compensated at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services; and

Employer “Do’s” and “Don’ts”• The athletic department may arrange employment for prospects in the summer prior to their enrollment as freshmen and for enrolled studentathletes during all offi cial vacation periods (sum-mer, winter, spring) during the academic year.• Do not provide free transportation to and from jobs for student-athletes, unless such transportation is provided to all employees.• Do provide employment for prospective and currently enrolled studentathletes during permissible time periods and at regular pay rates for similarly qualifi ed non-athlete employees.
