GEORGIA O’CONNOR-HARDINGA resource consent will now be required before a boarding house can be established, in a bid to stop landlords cramming more people into a houses.

The Ilam Upper Riccarton Resi-dents Association successfully lob-bied for the city council replacement district plan to have a definition of what a boarding is, to stop loose “rent a room” arrangements.

IURRA Peter Harding said before the plan change there were no rules in place that offered protection.

This means a city council will con-sider a range of factors before grant-ing a consent including: the scale of activity, the impact on the residential character, traffic generation and ac-cess safety.

Before then, boarding houses were not required to meet this criteria.

After the February 22, 2011, earth-quake, accommodation in the city was at a premium, with overcrowd-ing, and some landlords renting space in garages, or renting out a room to several people.

The new definition means the council will investigate the living

conditions of a house if a complaint is received.

The definition of Boarding House and Boarding Room will be covered in Decision 16 of the city plan.

It says that a boarding house means one or more buildings, used for paid lodgings or boarding providing ac-commodation on a site that contains more than two boarding rooms and is occupied by more than six tenants.

Meanwhile, figures show from the latest Trade Me Property Rental Price Index report in January 2016 that Christchurch is one of the few places in the country that is decreas-

ing in the demand for renting proper-ties.

The overall percentage for renting in Christchurch has decreased by 8.9 per cent.

Mr Harding said the reality is now that houses have been repaired and a large proportion of people who were crammed into houses have moved back into their fixed homes.

Businesses near the Riccarton Bus Lounge are concerned youth are continuing to cause problems for the area, saying the city council has made a “pig’s mess” of the situation.

The bus lounge has been a hot-spot for young people causing trouble since it opened last year.

At Tuesday’s Riccarton Wigram Community Board meeting, The building owner Arthur McKee said businesses had had enough, and blamed the

city council for not listening to concerns before the bus lounge was built.

Community board member Debbie Mora (left) said

installing external speakers around the shopping area, playing classical music, may calm the situation.

She said Cashel Mall had the same problem, but after the same solution was implemented there, the problem was resolved.

In a series of incidents over the past week, youth were found playing football in the middle of Division St, while on Thursday a group of 10 men were involved in an assault on a person in the bus lounge.

The men first ran along Riccarton Rd to the victim’s car and vandalised it, before going into the bus lounge and assaulting him.

At the meeting on Tuesday, Mr McKee said city councillor Phil Clearwater had made a “pig’s mess of the whole area”. Cr Clearwater is chairman of

the city council committee responsible for infrastructure, including public transport.

Mr McKee told the community board that Cr Clearwater had not listened to businesses or the Riccarton community when the lounge was planned. He said it was not designed sufficiently well to deter crime.

“At the moment, there is a blank wall running along Division St and security people can’t see outside. Of course, the people causing the problem go round the corner at the back of Farmers,” Mr McKee said.

However, Cr Clearwater told the Western News the city council had listened carefully to all the feedback from the community.

“Council spent a lot of time engaging with bus patrons, the local community, and business owners about the location options and design of the new bus lounge.”

INVESTIGATION COMPLETEPolice say investigations into the reported attempted abduction that allegedly occurred last Wednesday in the Church Corner area, have established that no attempted abduction occurred and there was no other untoward behaviour. Two boys reported to police that a man had allegedly tried to pull them into a vehicle.

FUNDING GRANTEDThe Riccarton-Wigram Community Board resolved to make a grant of $18,000 to the Upper Riccarton War Memorial Library. This is so a proportion of the library floor can be repaired.

LAND TO BE CLEAREDThe demolition of Robbie’s Bar and Bistro on Clarence Street will soon be under way, allowing for the subdivision and sale of the city council-owned land it occupies. The council said demolition will proceed in stages, and the whole process should be completed in two to three months. The Riccarton Community Centre is still in the design stages. University of Canterbury Students’ Association president James Addington describes progress in the year to date. Do you have a story to share? Email [email protected]

“University of Canterbury Students’ Association (UCSA) president” ‑ what does that even mean? Just about every day someone comes up to me and asks, “so, Jimbo, what do you actually do as president?” Most of the time, people don’t have a free hour to hear me explain, but 300 words right now is a pretty decent chunk to let you know how 2016 is going for us

so far. We’ve just finished

orientation. University is so much more than morning lectures and late nights in the library. My favourite part of what we (the University of Canterbury Students’ Association) put on for orientation is easily clubs day. Don’t get me wrong, getting dressed up and wild for Toga and Mardi Gras is a blast, but clubs are the heart and soul of Canterbury University.

Clubs day definitely went off this year, with a record number of sign‑ups. A very large congrats is in order for the Student Volunteer Army for getting the most sign‑ups out of any club on campus.

Clubs are the pride and joy of the student association ‑ no other university in the country has the kind of campus culture we have. Whether you are into musical theatre, partying, maths, or chess, they’ll be something here for every student.

We are also getting a new home, and this is a major focus for us.

As some of you will know, we have a new UCSA building coming, and the executive are involved in the design and development process to ensure it is a building by the students, for the students.

On top of that, we are starting a fundraising campaign with the hope of raising $5 million towards UCSA’s share of the costs of the project. This is starting to take up more time as we get closer to launching it half‑way through the year. We’re hoping Christchurch will bust out the bucks to help students rebuild their home, the way students rallied together after the earthquake to clear up the city.

Readers respond to the Western News article about the city council conducting geotechnical investigations at Kyle Park to see if sports grounds can go there:

David NesbittThis might be an opportune time

for council to gain some credibility and approach local ratepayers to gauge support for their grand plan. Given the appalling financial management of ratepayer assets by this council and the subsequent rapidly diminishing asset base, I doubt very much that the council is capable of making any informed decisions.

Leave the sports clubs alone and concentrate on core council business instead.

Melanie Dawson’s cat has been missing for almost a month. She asks for readers’ help. If you have any clues to Spooky’s whereabouts, email [email protected]

Melanie DawsonMy cat, Spooky, has been missing

since February 28 from Steele St, Hornby. She is only four years old, and the strange thing is, she never

left the yard. She has been fixed, and is all

white ‑ except for when she decides to go under one of the cars in the driveway.

I have posted her on Trade Me, Pets On The Net, and Lost Cats Christchurch. I have called Cats Protection, the city council, and am still calling the SPCA weekly with hope that she will be there ‑ but so far, no such luck.

I had flyers made up with Spooky’s picture and did a block radius on both sides of the street, putting them in every mail box. Still no luck.

Then when my neighbor got home from school he came over and told me that one of his cats has also gone missing and has been missing for a couple of weeks. The more I was searching on the Lost Cats website, the more cats that I was noticing had gone missing from the Hornby/Hei Hei area.

I went down to the police department with all the information, and all they said was I had done everything I could have done.

I’m sure once I walked out the door, the police officer had a good laugh.

Spooky is still not home after all this time. I don’t know what else I can do. We just want our little fur‑ball home safe and sound.

Bamford School pupils celebrated being the 110,000 recipient of the Red Cross earthquake recovery grants. After helping more than 110,000 Cantabrians, the New Zealand Red Cross earthquake grants will be finishing at the end of this month.

Since the February 22, 2011 earthquakes, $109 million has been distributed throughout the city and has helped one in four Cantabrians. The eastern suburbs were worst hit in the February earthquake and thousands were helped by the Red Cross.

Recovery communications manager Simon Makker said that immediately after the earthquake, Red Cross put out an appeal, and since then, all the money has gone back into the community. He said the level of response took a lot of people by surprise.

The appeal raised more than $103 million in donations from Kiwis. A further $28 million was given to NZ Red Cross from

national societies and corporate sponsorships, bringing the appeal’s total to $131 million.

Mr Makker said it is like an end of an era, but the charity will still be continuing to help out people in the community post-earthquake.

“We’ve got a lot of social-type workshops still available. Especially after Valentine’s Day, it was in demand - that

earthquake brought back a lot memories for people.”

Grants made by the organisation have included the 2010 Hardship grant, 2013 Christchurch Schoolchildren’s grant, and the 2011 Emergency and Hardship grant.

Mr Makker said about $44 million was dedicated to the 2011 Emergency and Hardship grant alone, and there were

around 51,000 applications made.

Overall, about 37 grants have been made over the past five years, to different causes.

The final three grants available, applications for which are closing on March 31, are to help homeowners with packing, moving, or storing belongings, or for independent advice around quake-damaged homes.

GENEROSITY: Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Commission chairman, retired High Court judge Sir John Hansen, with students from Bamford Primary School.

Red Cross winds up local earthquake grants The search is on for people in the

west of the city who are tireless community stalwarts, from coaches of children’s sports team to those caring for community gardens.

Nominations for the annual Community Service Awards and Youth Service Awards are open for the Riccarton-Wigram and Fendalton-Waimairi wards. Riccarton-Wigram and Spreydon-Heathcote community boards are also celebrating youth volunteering in the areas, through the Youth Service Awards. These focus on people under the age of 25 who make a difference to where they live.

City council customer and community general manager Mary Richardson views this as the perfect opportunity to give recognition to those helping in their community, who expect nothing in return.

“There are countless people who volunteer to serve their community, often without reward. It is important that their hard work and unstinting support is recognised,” she said.

Award nomination forms are available from council libraries, and nominations are open until April 8.

Community award entries open for 2016

• The extent of road repairs varies from full reconstruction where there is extensive earthquake damage to isolated patch repairs.

• The result may look a little patchy, but will be done to a high standard and the Council will monitor the condition and prioritise further work as part of its maintenance programme.

• So far SCIRT has completed 83 per cent of its road repair programme.

• After SCIRT completes its work at the end of this year, the Christchurch City Council and NZ Transport Agency will continue road repairs in their programmes.

Hi David tell me where you grew up?

I was born and bred here in Christchurch and I am still here. We moved to Parnassus for 12-18 months for work but I have been here most of my life. I am now retired but I was a joiner by trade. I still do a bit of it every now and again.

What high school did you go to?

I went to Papanui High School. It was a good school, no problems.

Do you still catch-up with your old mates from school?

Unfortunately, most of them are no longer with us. I had a couple of relatives at school that I still see. Most of the people I get around with are from the

Canterbury Land Rover Owners Club and of course my kids and grand kids.

So you have a couple of kids?

Yeah, we have three boys and

seven grandchildren. My sons have all been in and out of the club at various times. They all live here in Canterbury. We just welcomed another grandchild into the family before Christ-

mas. One of the grand-kids and my son were in at the same time giving us three generations in the club for a brief period.

What do your kids do?My eldest son works at the

Air Force Museum, the middle son works at Fulton Hogan and the youngest owns his own company called Container Waste.

Okay so the burning question, what is the attraction to Land-Rovers?

Well I was always into my hunting and fishing so it was a natural choice of vehicle be-cause they can get you that wee bit further than a normal car. I saw an ad in the paper to join a newly-formed Land-Rover club and thought that sounds a bit like me. The rest is history.

When did you first take a drive in a Land-Rover?

I brought my first one in 1963 when I was around 23. I did 100,000-odd miles in it. Toured the North Island in it. I brought it so I could get further into the hills or near lakes or rivers for hunting and fishing. I had it for 27 years. Then I got a Range Rover, which my wife, Gale, wrote off.

How did she do that? She was just driving along and

it tipped over, (laughing), but that is just what happens when you are out four-wheel-driving.

Was that her first crash?Yes, first and only one.

So tell me about the Canterbury Land Rover Owners Club, I hear you have been involved since the beginning?

Well, we have just completed a trip we did 50 years ago when the club first started and I was the only one who was on both trips. The trip was from Hawarden and Lees Valley and was very difficult back then. It was real pioneering stuff.

So how did if feel to get back up there 50 years later, did all the old memories come back?

Oh yes, we were looking around and trying to remember all the old landmarks. We also did it on the 25th anniversary of the club. When we were up there this time I spoke to one of the farmers and he can remember, as a kid, us coming through their property. Which would have been a big deal for them back then.

Where is the craziest place you have taken your Land-Rover?

Well, I have virtually been through all the back country in the South Island. Central Otago is a beautiful place to get lost in. And the West Coast, that can be rugged (laughing). Having quite a lot of members we could

get all round the place with the contacts we had. We now have to sign waivers to go on property now, it has become a lot more complicated. I am not easily frightened. There are not many places I wouldn’t drive in, within reason.

How many are in the club?We had 200 at one point which

made us the biggest Land-Rover club in the country. But we lost a few after the 2011 earthquake for some reason so now we have between 140-150 still in the club.

A lot of people wouldn’t

understand the physical nature of doing this kind of thing would they?

No, you are not just sitting in a vehicle. You are using low range all the way up and down. You thrash around in the cab and take some pretty solid bumps sometimes. It is quite hard on the body. My newer vehicle has much nicer suspension. It is a mental game also, you have to pick you line and be smart about how you attack a hill or ridge line. I have learnt a few tricks over the years to keep myself out of trouble.

So how many made the reunion trip from Hawarden to Lees Valley?

There were 17 vehicles and over 30 people so it was a big crew, which is good because you can help each other out and have fun together.

Is it still just Land-Rovers?No, we changed that about 10

years into it. Now we have all types of vehicles.

Did you have any positions in the club?

Pretty much everything except for secretary (laughing), I’m not much of writer. I have been

chairman, treasurer and been on the committee for years. I am just a member – not.

Thanks for having a chat with us David, when is the 50th anniversary of the Canterbury Land Rover Owners Club?

It will be in July and we are hoping to get as many of the 1200-odd members we have a had over that time to come along.

If you want to get more information about the club or the 50th anniversary email [email protected].

NOW AND THEN: David and Gale Harris (left) return to tackle the same trek Mr Harris and his pioneering mates did in 1966. That track was much rougher and tougher in 1966 and a few got stuck while trying to negotiate it.

And this property needs to go. Our vendor has made the difficult decision to move on and their instructions are definite - this property must be sold on or before auction day.

A neat two bedroom unit set above the road to give a unique outlook to the street. A tidy kitchen with its own bay window and a generous living room offers plenty of space for homes of this size. Freshly carpeted but still leaving room for improvement for a new owner.

A small but perfectly proportioned garden out front offers the opportunity for those who like to dabble in growing plants but want to still have time in the weekends.

This would be ideal for young buyers wanting to get on the property ladder, or the older generations who are looking to downsize into a nice neighbourhood. This could also be a good first investment for those wanting to start a successful property portfolio.

Make sure you view this property by appointment.

Hornby High School Commitment, Achievement, Resilience, RespectYears 7 – 13

‘Soft skills’ important

As this page shows, the year has already been busy with various events and activities in addition to our normal classroom teaching. This is as it should be, as we ensure that our students regularly have positive experiences both in and out of the classroom that enrich their understanding and broaden their outlook. It is essential that young people understand that school offers much more than just education. Doing well at school is important as this leads to qualifications, however there is more to preparing for life than just attending five lessons a day.I recently spoke to a senior school assembly about the importance of young people developing their “soft employment skills”. These are the skills and attributes that employers seek but are not always explicitly taught in the classroom. I am speaking of things like punctuality, politeness, leadership, following instructions, willingness to listen and learn, resilience and “stickability” to see the job completed. These essential skills for living, or “soft skills” as they are often called can, of course, be picked up in many other places – on the sports field, at a part-time job, at family events, church, clubs, youth groups and the like. Young people can pick up these soft skills at school, not necessarily in the classroom but in all the other opportunities and activities that are on offer. At that same senior assembly the prefects introduced themselves, an opportunity to attend Outward Bound was presented as well as information about other community clubs and activities. So many opportunities are on offer for our young people to develop their skills and prepare themselves for the big wide world beyond school. This approach of “seeing the whole person” and playing to each individual’s strengths is confirmed by our pleasing 2015 NCEA results which were, in fact, the best overall that the school has ever achieved. Increasingly, students are understanding the principle of “Start with the end in mind” so they can make the connection between their goals for life after Hornby HS and their present school subjects and activities. Ngā mihi nui to our community as the positive busyness of the year continues. However, the cause of all this activity is the wellbeing of each individual. Schools can be complex places, so if any member of the community wishes to talk to me about anything, please contact the office to arrange a time for this to occur. My door is open.

Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo e lelei. Bula. Fakaalofa atu. Namaste. Kumusta. Haere mai ki Te Huruhuru Ao o Horomaka. Warm greetings to the Hornby High School community.

Leaping the digital divide

Programme boosts students’ business acumen

Sam FaaliloSam, above right, has attended Hornby High School since Year 9, having come from Oaklands Primary and Kirkwood Intermediate. He has been an enthusiastic House Captain, organising events promoting the Hornby High School spirit. In his Senior years, Sam has won inter-school awards as a top Pasifika Achiever and uses his abilities to mentor others through the Peer Support Programme. He has also made the most of opportunities presented to him in Drama and Performance. Makayla Williams-SmithMakayla, above left, is a popular and well-rounded student who succeeds in academics, cultural and sporting events. She has been at Hornby High School since Year 9, having attended Templeton Primary School. Makayla is Captain of the successful Girls’ Football Team. Last year she was selected to go on a Spirit of Adventure voyage, sailing around the Hauraki Gulf for 10 days. This year Makayla is leading the Prefect team by making community connections and organising charity fundraising events.

Year 12 students at Hornby took part in a three-day programme that gives them an insight into the world of business. In MaiBiz students pitch their knowledge and skills to create and develop the best business concept. The winning team was “Incorporation Innovation” with Olivia Howell as CEO. Their business was called “Got You Covered” and was a service to support teens and young adults.

There has been an amazing response to the school’s aim of “going digital” in Years 7-10. Between student owned and school devices there are enough chromebooks for every student in every lesson. Students are enjoying

their lessons in the digital age. The school is very appreciative of the effort families have made to equip their children for 21st Century learning.

Head students for the year

An Academic Awards Ceremony has recently celebrated the NCEA achievements of Hornby High School students. The Level 1 NCEA pass rate was 84%, almost 10% above the national level for all schools in New Zealand. Other pleasing results at Level 1 were the two Excellence Endorsements, 14 Merit Endorsements, and 58% of students

gaining more than 100 credits.Level 2 NCEA results were also pleasing. At 72%, the pass rate is just under the national figure but is well on track to meet the government’s goal of 85% of 18 year olds passing by 2017. There were two Excellence Endorsements, four Merit Endorsements and more than 50% of the cohort gained over 100 credits.

Success celebrated

Pictured using their chromebooks are Year 7 students Nidhi Prasad and Gabriel Sasuman, above, and Samantha Whitcombe left.

Hornby High School students Rose Eaton, Ashley Hider and Naseeba Kaskar attended the recent First Foundation Celebration at the Commodore Airport Hotel, welcoming the Class of 2016 and farewelling graduating students.Ashley has been awarded a First Foundation Scholarship which will help support her for the next four years, including with paid, part-time work experience and help with tertiary fees . She will also be supported by a personal mentor and engage in an extensive student support and development programme. Rose and Naseeba have both been accepted on to the Foundation Steps Programme, which assists academically talented students to transition from high school through to their second year at university. All participants involved in the 27-month programme are supported by a personal mentor, attend workshops and have academic monitoring. The First Foundation has provided more than 90 students with tertiary scholarships since it was established in 1998 and more than 30 businesses are now involved as partnering organisations.

BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

Will Hadfield was determined to come back from a second place to win the South Island Optimist Championships.

The Medbury School pupil won the two day regatta on March 12-13 in Dunedin.

He was nervous on the first day because he had come sec-ond at the Canterbury Champi-onships the previous weekend to Charteris Bay Yacht Club’s David Buchanan.

“After coming second at the Canterbury Champs I was opti-mistic that I could win however there was some good competi-tion with both David and Suede there who have both had a fantastic season and many other competent opti sailors attending as well.”

The 13-year-old had a rough start in the first race on day one, coming fourth.

“After the first race I wasn’t feeling too good, I had got a fourth which may sound good but if you’re trying to win it’s rubbish.”

But following the first race, he picked up his game and got two firsts and a second.

The second day saw the races abandoned because the wind did not fill in, and Will (right) was named the overall cham-

pion.“I felt a combination of be-

ing relieved and happy as this had been my goal to win and I felt good that I achieved it. I’ll definitely be back next year to defend my title.”

David Buchanan came second, and Dunedin’s Ollie Gilmour came third.

Will said sailing in Dunedin was a different experience, because there was a large sand

bar that snaked its way through the harbour.

Will has been sailing Optimist regattas since he was eight.

At the end of last season his results qualified him to be part of the New Zealand Optimist Sailing Squad.

He will compete at the New Zealand Optimist Nationals in Kohimarama, Auckland which begins on Thursday.

ACTION: Will won two of his races, came second in one and fourth in another which led to the overall win.

Second place finish for Halswell after winThe Halswell senior men’s cricket team have finished the season in style, beating Addington outright at Halswell Domain on Saturday.

The win means they finish sec-ond on the table.

Addington batted patiently but Halswell’s bowlers kept chipping away and finally dismissed them for 155.

Halswell bowler Leighton Johnston finished with 4-44. Mike Worsfold was brought into the at-tack when Addington were batting for time rather than looking to score runs and bowled superbly, taking four wickets for three runs

from four overs.Worsfold’s impressive figures

resulted in Halswell chasing a small total of just 40 runs. They scored these in nine overs with Mitch Kerr finishing on 33 not out.

Having comprehensively out-played Addington, the Halswell team had to wait on the Sumner vs Heathcote result to see if they would win the grade.

However, in bizarre circum-stances the game was tied on the last ball, resulting in Sumner finishing above Halswell on the table by 1.1 points.

HIGH FIVE: The Halswell senior men’s cricket team won their final match against Addington on Saturday.

Growing from a two-surgery to a five-surgery practice over the three and a half decades, the dental centre’s upgrade

has seen the whole premises renovated and extended, including an additional surgery and a larger, more comfortable waiting room for patients.

It has also introduced a special new X-ray machine, an OPG machine, which gives the dental surgeons the ability to take panoramic radiography.

“This means patients don’t need to be referred out for these types of X-rays,” says dental surgeon Vivienne

Levy. “With this machine we can see the whole jaw, which helps us with wisdom teeth and other complicated extractions. It shows the presence or absence of unerupted teeth, and also helps us identify fractures and other general pathology of the jaws.”

The professional team of five dental surgeons and two hygienists is experienced in all aspects of dental care and caters for the whole family, from age two right up to senior citizens.

Property investment is on the boil again thanks to low interest rates and rising property values.

Underlying the price rises are high levels of net migration, low levels of new building and growing numbers of first-home buyers tapping into KiwiSaver balances for their deposit.

Auckland-based investors are taking advantage of the increased equity in their homes to buy properties in the Upper North Island, particularly in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

Wellington, which has seen little change in property values since the Global Financial Crisis, is suddenly surging ahead and other areas are seeing growth too. From an investment point of view, property is looking good in comparison with other alternatives.

The returns on fixed interest investments such as term deposits and bonds are the lowest they have been for decades and there is no sign that this will change any time soon.

Worries about the Chinese economy continue to cause volatility in share markets around the world. On the other

hand, property prices across the country increased by more than 11 per cent in the year to February according to Quotable

Value statistics. While property investment is

looking increasingly attractive, it is not a game for novices. There

are significant risks involved. Successful property investment requires research to identify the right location and specific property, a good understanding of the financial aspects including how to get a good return, the ability to negotiate a good purchase price and borrowing terms, knowledge of tenancy law and a whole host of other things.

Basic concepts like being able to calculate the gross and net income yield on a rental property are essential to understand before making an investment. In a rising market, any fool can make money, but markets eventually turn and that is when the soundness of investment decisions is revealed.

having fun and, for many of us,that’s what this time of year isabout—with the ski seasonalmost here and others lookingfor winter escapes. It’s also a good time to look

ahead and plan for futuresuccess. Strategic planning isan essential component ofsuccessful business and I havetwo plans— one formyself andone for the business— both areintertwined.Formany of us, our

businesses are a reflection ofourselves, so it makes sensethat whenwe plan for ourbusiness(es), they reflect ourown goals and ambitions. So, what are you going to

achieve for the remainder ofthis year? What are yourtargets? Are you going to letlife happen or take astructured approach? It’s important that you set

goals for yourself and yourbusiness that energise, motivate, aremeasurable andattainable. However, you

shouldmake sure that you alsoset some stretch targets. My personal plan includes

revampingmy fitness and hasmany stretches . . . and stretchtargets! I have resolved toexercise at least three times aweek. I did start this columnwith the ‘‘time flies’’ statement, but it seems that in that fitnesstime, I can create an ability toslow time significantly or stopit entirely. So I am going to dust off the

previously unused stepmachine at home. And I will seta goal of ‘‘stepping’’ aparticular distance each day.Given that the garage isn’twarm, there is incentive to getmotivated. The stretch target is to

make this activity daily. OK,not much of a stretch, but rightnow I am about as fit as a BigMac is nutritious.

The key to stretch targets isthat they do just that; theystretch you to new levels ofperformance and, likemuscleswhen you exercise, you andyour business develop newstrengths as you achieve them.I know it won’t be easy—

It is not uncommon for NewZealanders to have overseasinvestments.Examplesmight be shares in

particularly Australian ones, areexempt from FIF tax.Under current NZ law, an

overseas adviser who providesinvestment advice to a NZ residentmust be an Authorised FinancialAdviser (AFA) as determined in theFinancial Advisers Act.Australian advisersmay in some

Popular Japanese restaurant draws the crowds

Relocated from its former Cashel Street location to Riccarton, Cookai Japanese r e s t au r a nt h a s m a d e a

welcome return to the Christchurch dining scene for many of its old regulars, whilst gaining a bevy of new customers.

The restaurant’s décor is minimalistic yet stylish, and in addition to the large restaurant there’s also a very cool bar – the perfect place for a Sapporo if you decide to show up without having booked a table. You will almost always have to wait for a table if you do, so it’s a good idea to make a booking.

The reasonably priced, extensive menu offers standard Japanese fare, from Teriyaki to dumplings to sushi, with some other interesting options as well. The food is beautifully presented, fresh and delicious.

Cookai Riccarton is the perfect place to go with a group of friends to share and sample an assortment of the delicious dishes on offer. The service is excellent too, plus the bonus is, it’s BYO.

Cookai is open for lunch and dinner and does takeaways as well, so if you can’t get a table you have the option of taking something tasty home.

The restaurant is located at 6 Nelson Street Riccarton.

Opening hours are 11.30am 2.30pm and 5.30pm-10pm.

To book a table phone 343-2860.

TARGETED radiotherapy for breast can-cer patients could be just as effective as treating the whole breast, British research has found.

Following surgery, focusing radio-therapy around the tumour site produces similar results as treating the whole breast and has fewer long-term side effects, the authors of a study, led by The Institute of Cancer Research, London, say.

Radiotherapy is a standard treatment used after the removal of a tumour from a breast, even with those who are deemed to have a low risk of relapse.

The Cancer Research UK-funded clinical trial examined more than 2000 women, aged 50 or older, who had early breast cancer with a low risk of returning.

The study, presented at the European Breast Cancer Conference in Amsterdam, split the women into three groups follow-ing breast-conserving surgery: one had full dose radiotherapy to the whole breast, the current standard treatment; the second had the full dose of radiotherapy to the tumour area, with a lower dose to rest of the breast; and the third group received the full dose to the area where the tumour had been, and no radiotherapy to the rest of the breast.

Five years after their treatment, only

one per cent or less of women in each group had a recurrence of their cancer in their breast, according to the researchers.

Dr Charlotte Coles of the Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We’re really pleased we have demonstrated a very effective radiothera-py approach that also reduces the side-effects of treatment. “Minimising these long-term side-effects is essential as, not only do they impact on physical health, but they can also cause psychological distress.”

Professor Arnie Purushotham, senior clinical adviser at Cancer Research UK, said the result could lead to a “crucial change” in the treatment of breast cancer.

Mr Holstein

Scholarship Success

Sporting Achievements

Welcome to the new school year and a special welcome to all new students, families and staff members who start their association with the Burnside community in 2016. I look forward to meeting you all as the year progresses.

My aims as Principal are to:

• Provide an environment where staff, students and their parents/caregivers feel connected, valued and respected so they enjoy their experience with Burnside High School

• To work alongside the staff and students, to build on our strengths, and to enhance our reputation as a highly-regarded, successful and sought-after school.

After one year I have a real sense of the Burnside values, and the ethos at the heart of the school’s culture; a culture based on personal excellence and care for others. It is this culture that underpins Burnside’s success.

I am determined that we make a habit of our school ethos: that we treat each other with respect and are inclusive, that we have pride in our school and community, that we are loyal, that we strive for excellence together for the good of Burnside High School. That is my challenge.

‘We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act, but a habit’. (Joe Schmidt, Coach of the Ireland Rugby Team and former New Zealand school teacher)

I look forward to another successful year on so many fronts: in academic work, in cultural activities, in the arts, in sport, in leadership, and in service. I am inspired by the young people in this school and feel privileged to be the Principal.

Phil Holstein, Principal

Yet again our 2015 students achieved excellent results in NCEA and Scholarship.

Our 2015 Dux Samuel Park achieved Scholarships in all his subjects (Accounting, Calculus, Chemistry, Physics and Statistics). He was also successful in achieving an Outstanding Scholar in Statistics. Samuel is now attending Auckland University

studying Engineering.

Emma Richardson also achieved excellent results, receiving the Outstanding Top Scholar Award in New Zealand for Printmaking. She is now attending The University of Auckland Elam School of Fine Arts where she has embarked on a Bachelor of Fine Art.

For the second year in a row the Burnside High School Senior Girls Volleyball team won the Mainland (South Island) Volleyball Championships. Our Senior Boys A team finished 3rd in Division 1 and the Senior Girls B team finished 1st in Division 3.

Congratulations to Harley Porter who competed in and won Gold at the Secondary Schools Under 19 Canterbury Triathlon Championships. He then went on to compete in the Under 19 South Island Secondary Schools’ Triathlon Championships held in Oamaru where he won a Silver. A fantastic achievement!

Our Burnside High School Athletics Day was held over two days in February. Two long standing records were broken on the day: Angus Bailey broke the Senior Boys 1500m which had stood since 1977 - his time was 4.07. Ryan Sutherland broke the 1981 record in the Juniors Boys 800m - his time was 2.09.

Two other records were also broken on the day ; Cameron Clark broke the 2010 record for U14 Boys 3000m race - his time 2.07, and Charlotte Blair broke the 2014 Open Girls Steeplechase with a time of 8.12.

Upmarket hair and beauty salon My Hair & Beauty in Upper Riccarton provides a full range of hair and beauty

services to ensure clients always walk out looking and feeling their best.

The salon’s fully qualified beauty and massage therapist Sanjeeta Kirti has both local and international experience. She performs beauty and body services such as threading, waxing, tinting, facials, massages, manicures and pedicures.

Threading is a natural hair-removal technique that is performed using a cotton thread. It is beneficial for people with sensitive skin, acne problems, and those who are allergic to waxing. Both women and men can use this technique of hair removal, Sanjeeta says.

For her massage services, Sanjeeta uses lavender oil, as lavender is known to induce calmness and relaxation.

Massage therapy is manual manipulation of soft body tissues such as muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments to enhance a person’s heath and well-being. Massage reduces stress and anxiety, relaxes muscles, reduces pain, improves blood circulation, improves skin tone, aids in mental relaxation and promotes overall

health and wellness.A full range of facials is also provided

with the type of treatment depending on the client’s skin condition. For these treatments Sanjeeta uses the high-quality French product, La Biosthetique.

My Hair & Beauty also offers a two-hour package deal – an ideal way to spoil yourself, or someone else as a gift. It includes a half-hour back, neck and shoulder massage, a one-hour deluxe facial, and a foot therapy with paraffin wax, which is a skin-conditioning heat treatment.

MooGoo produce a full range of safe, natural skin and scalp products that are especially suited for those with problem

skin. In these products they only use top quality edible ingredients that are known to be highly effective and good for our skin. These active ingredients are only used in correct concentrations for effective results and not just added to look good on the label. Because the MooGoo range is so safe and yet so effective is probably why it was rated the number one most preferred brand of non-prescription (non-steroid) creams for those suffering from problem skin in Australia. It is also recommended by many medical practitioners in Australia.

As MooGoo products are safe and natural they are ideal for long term use from babies to adults. They are an effective alternative or follow-up treatment to chemically-based ointments.

Although MooGoo products are

For decades scientists believed brain damage with age, after a stroke or injury was irreversible and brain neurons could not

be repaired. In more recent times, new research has shown that neurons can grow back with the right conditions and that a special extract of Gingko Biloba (EGb-761 or TEBONIN) has been clinically found to assist in this. The implications for stroke recovery are obvious, but researchers also know many of us suffer from undetected “micro-strokes” that over a period of time slowly reduce our cognitive function. TEBONIN is prescribed worldwide as a natural supportive agent for a healthy brain and cognitive function. It supports healthy mental performance, concentration, focus, alertness, motor function and to help with many conditions including tinnitus (ringing and noise in the ears), vertigo and normal balance. TEBONIN improves micro-circulation and helps the blood flow reach those critical places it needs to get to. It is a potent anti-oxidant and makes the red blood cells more pliable and capillary walls

more flexible. TEBONIN is one of the most widely

studied and researched herbal products in the world and is the only Ginkgo biloba extract manufactured via a patented multi-step extraction process. Each small tablet contains a highly concentrated 50:1 extract to give you a therapeutic clinical dose without having to take a large amount of the herb. Of 25 Gingko biloba products on the market, and tested by a major medical journal, only TEBONIN passed all five of the test requirements. Ten brands didn’t meet any requirements and the rest didn’t pass more than three out of five requirements. TEBONIN is the only Gingko biloba extract shown to activate all areas of the brain and is considered the gold standard in Gingko. TEBONIN has been trusted by millions of consumers worldwide for over 30 years with more than 8,000,000 tablets consumed each day.

commonly used by people with skin complaints like Eczema, Psoriasis and Dermatitis etc the range of products are becoming increasingly popular for healthy skin care. The Skin Milk Udder Cream is the lightest of creams that can easily penetrate the skin with its beneficial ingredients especially the milk protein which has been shown to increase skin elasticity and health. It is non-greasy and contains no mineral oil or other nasties.

Prepare to fall in love16 Elmwood Road, StrowanAuction: 10am, Thursday, April 7, 2016 – unless sold prior 3 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 2 toilets | 3 living rooms | 1 dining room | 4 off-street car parks | Listing #: PI42749

It will come as little surprise to learn that our owners have enjoyed 24 years in this glorious property. After all, the quiet, leafy street and the proximity to

the city’s finest schools make it particularly conducive to raising a family, which they have duly done.

Surrounded by manicured gardens on an expansive 759m2 section, this two-storey character home boasts three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a well-appointed kitchen.

A variety of living and dining spaces enhance functionality, while immaculately maintained period features (including timber floors and leadlight windows) add to its personality and charm.

A gas fire, a woodburner and a heatpump augment the home’s natural warmth, while excellent indoor/outdoor flow ensures you’ll make the most of the fabulous grounds. Out here, the lush lawns and sun-drenched entertaining areas are framed by sculpted hedges and mature trees, with tandem garaging and garden sheds contributing further appeal.

Of course, it’s the zoning for some of Christchurch’s most sought-after schools that will be the highlight for many, including both Boys’ High and Girls’ High as well as Heaton Intermediate and Elmwood Primary.

Our owners have cherished their time in this privileged spot and leave with many happy memories. With the family gone and the next chapter in their lives beckoning ,they are now determined to downsize,

offering their property to the market with genuine commitment and resolve.

Interest is sure to be high and immediate action is advised.

Open days dates: Saturday and Sunday 12.30pm to 1.15pm.

as effectively and efficiently as possible resulting in a healthy, hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump clean. We at Enviro Master, are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period.

it is important to remember, when selecting an installer, the manufacturer’s warranty does not cover the installation and consumers could be responsible for any repair or damage caused to the system due to poor installation. Enviro Master’s five-star installation guarantee ensures correct installation, and a demonstration so customers have an understanding on how it will best meet their needs.

environment in which to live and work. in case of poor or insufficient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. if exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is not effective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed.

Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful and can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. in summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation, however as winter approaches, we start to shut up out houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline.

it is therefore very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation.
