WKU AT NEBRASKA GAME NOTES • PAGE 3

TOPPER TIDBITSThe Hilltoppers hit the road for the final time in non-conference play this season. The Toppers have won four straight games following their defeat of Troy Wednesday, the third time this year

they have earned that many victories in a row.WKU and the Cornhuskers have never played in Lincoln. The most recent of the two meetings in the series

took place in the opening round of the 1986 NCAA Tournament, with the eighth-seeded Toppers advancing toface No. 1 seed Kentucky following an eight-point win.

The Hilltoppers have a 5-12 mark all-time against Big 12 schools, which includes going 2-0 against bothBaylor and NU. They haven’t faced a league school since taking on Oklahoma at the All-College Tournament inOklahoma City on Dec. 29, 1998, while the NU victory in ’86 is their most recent against a Big 12 opponent.Five of the 17 contests have come in postseason action (four NCAA, one NIT).

WKU assistant coach Paul Sanderford was the head women’s basketball coach at Nebraska from 1997-02,where he led the Cornhuskers to 88 wins and three NCAA Tournament appearances — in fact, he was the firstcoach ever to take the program to consecutive NCAA Tournaments.

WKU is 15-4 all-time on Jan. 6, which includes a 5-2 record on the road. When the Hilltoppers defeated NewMexico State on this date in 1962, the legendary E.A. Diddle became the first coach in NCAA history to servein that capacity for 1,000 games at the same school.

Siakam Seeing Double — Junior Boris Siakam posted the first double-double of his career last time outafter matching a career high with 15 points and setting another with 13 rebounds, which led all players. It’s thefirst time since he had 15 points in a 16-point win over Kentucky State on Dec. 29 last year that Siakam hasscored in double digits, while it marked the first occasion since WKU’s Dec. 9 game against Southern Illinois thathe has paced the team on the boards. Siakam — who is averaging 6.1 rebounds per outing since the SIU contest— has connected on 10 of his last 12 attempts (83.3%) from the floor in the last three games.

Setting The Scoring Pace — Guard Ty Rogers led the Hilltoppers for the second straight outing in scoringafter collecting 18 points in the win over Troy, and he also was credited with five rebounds — all on the offensiveend of the floor — and a career-high-tying five assists. The only player on the squad who has recorded a double-figure point total in each of the last two games, Rogers has posted 10-plus points in four of the last five outingsafter accomplishing the feat three times in WKU’s first 11 contests.

Toppers Rely On Lee — Courtney Lee hit a pair of three-pointers in the final three-and-a-half minutes ofWednesday’s victory over Troy, with the second coming as time expired to force overtime — he would go on tomake a pair of free throws 38 seconds in as the Toppers never trailed in the extra session. All five of Lee’s fieldgoals came from beyond the three-point arc as he moved one away from climbing into the top five in the school’scareer record books, and with 17 points against the Trojans the junior moved into 20th place all-time on the Hillwith 1,265 career points.

Working Overtime — The Hilltoppers picked up their first overtime victory since March 16, 2005, when itcame back to defeat Troy Wednesday, improving to 5-4 under head coach Darrin Horn when tied at the end ofregulation. That includes picking up wins in three of their last four contests that have gone into overtime.

Double-Digit Deficits Not An Issue — By coming back from a 10-point deficit in the final five minutesagainst Troy — a feat WKU also accomplished at Georgia on Nov. 14 — the Toppers have now won four contestsdespite trailing by double digits this season. It’s the second outing in a row that the Hilltoppers have trailed by 10points and come back to earn a victory, as Florida Atlantic was ahead by that many in the first half of a 93-83WKU win on Dec. 30.

No Turning Over The Tops — The Hilltoppers committed a season-low nine turnovers last time out, mark-ing the third straight outing, and fourth in the last five games, that they have been charged with fewer than 15miscues — the last time WKU recorded a single-digit turnover total came on Feb. 17, 2005, against UALR. TheToppers stand third in the Sun Belt Conference with a plus-1.50 turnover ratio after making fewer mistakes thanthe opposition in three of five contests since opening league action on Dec. 19.

WKU Offers A Helping Hand — On the other hand, WKU was credited with a season-best 22 assists (on 28field goals) in the win over the Trojans as five individuals had at least two helpers. In addition to having pointguards Tyrone Brazelton and Orlando Mendez-Valdez combine to collect 10 (against just one turnover),Rogers posted five and both Siakam and A.J. Slaughter handed out a pair — the latter’s streak of five straightgames with at least one assist is the second longest on the team.

Winning The Battle Of The Boards — The Toppers have outrebounded their last four opponents, thelongest streak of the year, after holding a 45-40 advantage on the glass on Wednesday. WKU has won 10 of 11contests when winning the battle of the boards in 2006-07, as they are now 52-14 (78.8%) in three-plus seasonsunder Horn with more rebounds than the opposition. In fact, the Toppers overcame a season-low 37.8 shootingpercentage by grabbing 23 offensive boards — their highest figure of the year — for the second outing in a row.

Hitting The Trifecta — The Hilltoppers hit 13 three-point field goals last time out (on a season-high 37attempts), marking the second occasion this winter that they have accomplished the feat in back-to-back outings— WKU sank 11 treys on Dec. 30 at FAU as well. It was the 11th time this season that it has made more threesthan its opponent — the Toppers have won 10 of those games — while they improved to 5-1 this season whenconnecting on 10 or more triples.

WKU BY THE NUMBERS...6Assists without a turnover for TyroneBrazelton in the Troy victory. It was the ninthtime he has paced the Hilltoppers in the cat-egory — that’s the most on the team — as hehas handed out five or more helpers in four ofthe last six contests.

18Free-throw attempts last time out, which waseight more times than the Trojans visited thecharity stripe. WKU is now 5-1 this season whenattempting more foul shots than the opposition.
