With countless successes behind them, National Water Surveying® fran-

chises (owned by NorthWest Aquifer Surveying, Inc.) are fast becoming the authority in the USA for accurately locating groundwater. HOW AN NWAS SURVEY

WORKSA sound/pressure wave can often be

sent as deep as 1000 or more feet into the ground. This sound/pressure wave causes a small movement in the rock formation. If there is water present in the rock formation below the sound/pressure wave the water moves (rip-ples) slightly. When the water moves it causes a very small change or dis-turbance (electro kinetic) in the bond between the rock and the water. The small electrical signal that is created by this change or disturbance travels to the surface at the speed of light. The stronger the signal the more wa-

ter available. The speed at which the signal comes to the surface is gener-ally used to determine the depth of the water. If little or no signal is returned then there is either no significant water in the rock formation below or there is water with high dissolved solids (salt) in the rock formation. Our equipment records the signals and we provide a printed report of the computed results. A survey with four or more soundings can map approximately 12,000 square feet and accurately show the estimated groundwater depth, quality, and quan-tity (yield).THE MINIMUM REQUIRE-

MENTS FOR A NWAS SURVEY TO BE COMPLETED ON MY PROPERTYThere are only a few minimum re-

quirements: 1) we need to have safe access to each sounding site with our 4X4 vehicle (otherwise in acceptable weather we can do remote soundings

which are an additional cost). 2) The area to be tested generally needs to be a minimum of 40 to 50 feet away from any type of electrical power source (primarily underground power and some buildings). 3) We need to have enough unobstructed surface sedi-ment (topsoil) to drive (install) four 3 foot 3 inch long 3/4 inch diameter elec-trodes into the ground. The electrodes are placed in a straight line and re-quire an area that is approximately 16 feet long and 2 feet wide to complete each sounding. The NWAS definition of unobstructed surface sediments is surface sediments that contain ap-proximately 30% or less large gravel or cobbles. If the surface sediments contain more than 30% large gravel or cobbles then more soundings may be required to collect a sufficient amount of definitive information.THE SURVEY LOCATION

In most cases, the property owner tells us the general area that they would like to have their well, which is where we complete the survey. If you are unsure of approximately where you would like your well drilled or there are a num-ber of dry or poor performing wells in the area then you have a few options to narrow the search for the right place to complete the survey. One option is to have fracture tracing (used primarily in areas with bedrock near the surface) com-pleted on your property. Another option is to have a study of the existing wells in the area, which may help find a pattern common to the good wells. A final option is to have North-West Aquifer Surveying complete and extended sounding profile survey (soundings completed in a line but separated by approximately 300 feet) completed across your property which will help us located some good areas to focus on with a more detailed close sounding profile survey.SOUNDINGS NEEDed per PROPERTYEvery property varies and some properties need many more

soundings than others but as a general rule we recommend a survey consisting of a minimum of four soundings (com-pleted in a profile or grid pattern separated by 85 to 150 feet) for a single house domestic well and a survey consisting of a minimum of eight soundings for agricultural or multi-home wells. We also recommend that the soundings be completed in a profile or an organized pattern of some kind.Until now, there were very few accurate and affordable

options to locate wells. The two most common options are either picking a spot or well witching. Most well drillers will not suggest where to drill a well because of the po-tential liability involved. Werner Wagon Works located in Horton, KS was started 15 years ago because of a little boy’s dream. Don and Connie Werner are owners of Werner Wagon Works,

and Don was that little boy who had a dream of owning his own box wagon. This dream came about when as a little boy he would lay in the

back of his father’s farm wagon as he picked corn, the sound of the corn hitting the bang board never left him. Today the Werner’s, located on the east side of Mission Lake in Horton, build and or restore any kind of horse drawn vehicle that you might need. They have products in 33 states as well as in Canada and Japan. They have added two more states when in June Don completed resto-ration on box wagons going to Alaska and a new 1770 Colonial Wagon headed to Virginia. At the present time Don is working on 6 parade wagons going

to Georgia, these will be used in an all horse drawn high wheel wagon parade. As you visit the shop you will see old tools that were used by the

early waimwrights, wheelwrights and blacksmiths. From informa-tion gathered Don as one of about 5 full time wainwrights, non-Amish, in the United States that build horse drawn vehicles from the wheels on up. Each horse drawn vehicle is built with quality and a great deal of

attention paid to authenticity and historical usage. Don uses pat-terns from an 1846 original Concord Coach built by Abbott and Downing the builders of the Wells Fargo Coaches. In keeping with authenticity Don uses woods such as hickory, oak and ash for the wheels and yellow poplar, oak, fi r and other hard woods for the boxes, these woods would have been used in those fi rst horse drawn vehicles. You might ask what buyers do with these horse drawn vehicles.

Well believe it or not some still use them on their farms or ranches, museums, living history farms, others use them for advertising pur-poses for their businesses, such as being in parades or special com-pany functions, anytime you have a horse drawn vehicle and horses or mules they are “attention gitters”. Others use them in competi-tion, such as racing or chuck wagon cook offs. Also, there has also been a recent rise in interest in the horse drawn hearses being used at funerals instead of the modern day conventional auto hearse. Because of the Wagon Works several other businesses have spun

off. The “Real McCoy Hub” was invented by friend John MeCoy a hub insert that converts your wood hub wheels, while keeping the authentic look, to roller bearing, to save that horse-power and once installed they are no hassle, maintenance free. John and Sherry Mc-Coy own and operate “Four Mile Carriage and Machine Shop”, in Emporia, Kansas. Werner Wagon Works are the exclusive dealers of the “Real McCoy” hub insert.Another adventure stemming from the Wagon Works is an annual

sale the “Northeast Kansas Wagon & Carriage Consignment Sale” on June 24th & 25th, 2005 will be the fi fth year of the event The sale is held the Friday and Saturday after Father’s Day. This sale features horse drawn vehicles, tack, any horse-related items, antiques, crafts and antique tractors. There has been lots of positive feed back con-cerning the sale with attendees coming from across the nation. With Connie’s great love for history it was only natural for her

to start a re-enactment business. She takes her covered wagon and

the gear the pioneers would have taken and sets-up for schools, community events, shows and private events. She teaches about the experiences that the pioneers would have encountered on the many trails as they traveled west to expand this wonderful country. Connie has a consulting service, which will set up an entire event by contacting other re-enactor friends and other artisans; these fi ne re-enactors bring knowledge and entertainment to the visitor of any eventTo carry through with their love of history the Werner’s home will

soon host a two-theme room bed & breakfast, one a pioneer cabin and one a Cowboy room. These rooms will feature items used or associated with their time periods. Through out the house you will be able to see many historical items, pictures and books. The plans are to have the rooms open in late fall of 2005. Another venture is “Dry Creek Candles” owned and operated by

Diane Werner, of Burlington, Kansas. The wagon works inspired her to make a combination leather scented candle called, “Werner Wagon Works Candle”. This scent has been a big hit not only with the ladies but also with Cowboys and gentleman of all ages. The candles are made with natural botanical oils with soybean base. She has just developed a soap “Werner Wagon Works” with oils and goat milk enhanced with leather fragrance, wow talk about be-ing the best smelling cow-poke’ on the prairie. You will be hearing more about “Cowboys, The Kansas Experi-

ence” which Werner Wagon Works is one of the sites and Connie is the secretary/treasurer. This was started by a few of those Cow-boy types when it was found out that the most ask question in Kan-sas at the visitors centers was “where can we go see a Cowboy”. The sites are all Cowboy related, and you will be given a map to show the direction to the other sites across Kansas, each site will also have brochures and information on the other sites. The group also has an offi cial newspaper, published out of Ellsworth, KS, by the “Cowboy” himself, Jim Gray, called the “Kansas Cowboys” (Cockeyed Old West Band of Yahoos Society). The Werner’s feel

that they have been blessed in this busi-ness by the many interesting people that they meet along the trail. If your cows are thin or are overly fat, the best time to ad-just their weight is right after weaning. By sort-ing the cows based on their condition, age, and “peck-ing order,”

cows can inexpensively reach their target weight by calving.But if you are calving now, you don’t have time on your side

and a cow’s non-lactating low nutrient requirements at your advantage. “It takes a lot of close management to add signifi-cant weight during lactation,” says KC Olson, Ph.D, Beef Cat-tle Special-ist, University of Missouri. “The peak of lactation is typically the same time as the peak of breeding sea-son.”Rebreed cows usually comes during the highest nutrient re-

quirement phase of raising a calf. With that in mind, it’s best to plan ahead, the specialist said.“It takes 60 days to add one body condition score to an animal.

Think about your herd’s condition during weaning.” Olson rec-ommends. “But if you recognize you have a problem and need to add condition to your cows when the breeding season starts,

it can be done. It’s not easy or cheap, but it is possible.”Olson recommends a mature cow be at a body con-dition-

score (BCS) of 5, with heifers at a BCS of 6. Those levels of condition should enable the herd to reach their nutrient poten-tial for breeding success. to group by body condition and age of the cows, according to Dr. James I. Sprague, Live-stock Nutritionist. Perhaps the most difficult and challenging phase of cattle production is the initial period immedi-ately following weaning, commonly referred to as

the starting or backgrounding phase. Entering this period calves are under stress for a variety of reasons. Having been abruptly separated from their mother, they are intro-duced to a diet drastically different to what they are ac-customed. They may also have been hauled many miles, vaccinated, castrated, dehorned, dewormed, implanted, and mixed with other cattle. It is a major challenge just to keep them alive, let alone get them to gain.Despite these obstacles it is possible with good manage-

ment and proper nutrition to keep calves alive and get decent gains out of them during this initial phase. Some producers have even succeeded in getting calves to perform over and above what is typically expected during this time period. With few exceptions most of these producers have scrapped their traditional feeding systems and instead adapted a sys-tem that takes advantage of nontraditional feeds.

The theory behind this system is quite simple. Tradition-ally, in an attempt to get appreciable quantities of energy into the calf, most rations have typically relied on starch-based products for this energy source. But cattle are de-signed by nature to handle fiber-based ingredients. Adding starch creates an antagonist environment in the rumen of the animal, resulting in reduced intake, reduced forage di-gestibility, and poor feed efficiency. If high starch ingredi-ents are minimized and substituted with nontraditional high fiber/highly digestible ingredients, the depression of forage digestibility that often accompanies high starch rations can be eliminated. In addition, enhancing the diet’s palatability by using a ration conditioner effectively stimulates the ap-petite, increases intake, and improves feed efficiency. Numerous trials and studies have been done to determine

the comparative effectiveness of these nontraditional feeds vs. more traditional feed sources. The University of Ken-tucky has done considerable research in this area. Their studies have consistently demonstrated that nontraditional

One of the most telling ex-amples is a trial that compared soyhulls to corn with the following conclusion: “The results indicate that soyhulls (1) are an excellent choice to supplement high forage diets and (2) can replace corn on a pound for pound basis with slightly better results.”Because the amount of time that calves are backgrounded

can be relatively short it is imperative to get intakes as high as possible early in the feeding period and that gains be rapid and efficient. Increasing the dry matter intake (DMI) of an animal is the most economical way to boost its energy intake. The more dry matter it consumes in relation to its maintenance require-ment the more efficient it becomes. As rate of passage increases the amount of microbial protein in the rumen increas-es. This requires fiber/feed sources that are highly digestible and palatable. Perhaps the biggest drawback to using nontraditional feeds is that they can be inherently dry and therefore unpalat-able. This problem can be overcome by the inclusion of a ration conditioner that supplies energy and protein without up-setting rumen function.Agridyne, LLC markets a product

“Calf Claim” helps new cattle mothers and their calves get off to a compatible relationship. “Calf Claim”, a granular product, encourages even the most apathetic cows to respond appropri-ately to their newborns. It is smeared or sprinkled on the calf dur-ing the tough bovine debut when there’s extra stress usually in-volving a young, first-time mother who can’t get the calving job done on her own. In livestock, sometimes you have a problem with the mother claiming the young, and some will even attack them. Heifers are the worst. It’s a mess if a heifer doesn’t claim her calf. If the calf doesn’t nurse, it can’t absorb the antibodies it would get from the colostrum.When the “Calf Claim” is sprinkled on the back of the new-

born livestock, it makes even the most reticent mothers recep-tive to their young. The mother smells the licorice-laced product and dries off the baby as she licks it. This contact stimulates the baby’s respiration and heartbeat. The calf stands up and the cow lets it nurse. “Calf Claim” has been used on foals and lambs, but is most

successful with beef and dairy calves born under stress to first time mothers. When used routinely on calves that need pulled, it helps the cow or heifer to start licking. I defi nitely didn’t grow up thinking I’d want to spend my life working with goats.I didn’t really care for them one

way or the other come to think of it, hav-ing only been exposed to the occasional pygmy goats and sway-backed hubians one often fi nds in petting zoos. Yet I cer-tainly want to spend the rest of my life working with goats now, and have been hard at it for the past fi ve years... so what changed?The fi rst step came through a stroke of

luck when as a freshman in Animal Sci-ence at the University of California, Davis, I began working at the Goat Teaching and Research Facility. The animals themselves quickly won me over, for it was here that I fi rst made the acquaintance of the angular and stylish dairy goat. In addition to work-ing as a student milker and getting myself in up to my elbows (literally) during kid-ding season, I found myself among the group of students who comprised the UC Davis Goat Show team, tagging along on visits to local breeders, and volunteering during industry training sessions in animal

evaluation and judging. Thus developed my appreciation for both the animals and the industry, and I found myself envision-ing means of working raising dairy goats

into a career. I decided that cheese mak-ing was the solution, and therefore with

that as my goal, the logical destination was France, the country of cheese. I contacted the in-ternational work exchange program Agriventure, which found me a host site with a farmstead goat cheese maker and helped me through the process of applying for a work visa.I spent one year

living in the rural village of La Pey-ratte in the western part of France. The farm’s primary source of income is its’ goat cheese; winner of multiple medals, including gold, in national competition. Be-hind the success of this cheese are

the skill and craftsmanship of Maryline Guilloteau and the rich milk other herd of-Poitevine goats. I found myself integrated into farm life and the community surpris-ingly fast, and the daily routine of twice a day milking and cheese making was labor intensive but’ fulfi lling. I was even given the opportunity to visit several neighbor-ing goat dairies where I witnessed every extreme in goat dairying from animals kept on pasture with hand-milking to vast barns fi lled with goats with automated rotating parlors. The farm in La Peyratte fell in the middle, with animals pastured during the day but housed inside over-night. Surprisingly I found myself using the same milking system I’d been trained on at Davis which made me feel almost immediately at home. As my comfort with the language and culture increased, I found myself exploring even farther, talk-ing to cheese makers wherever I traveled and always tasting new and more complex cheeses, searching for inspiration. I even had the opportunity to attend the Interna-tional Cheese and Dairy Products Exposi-tion held in Paris where I was introduced to some of the top producers and sellers in the nation.Ten months into my stay I took the reigns

of the entire cheese making operation for three weeks while Maryline left the coun-try to visit trainees from previous years in Quebec. The responsibility was daunt-ing, especially after having spent the last ten months learning how complex and delicate cheese making can be. After three weeks without customers being able to de-tect that the head cheese maker was out, I felt the relief and satisfaction of knowing that I had truly found my calling.The hardest part of my training program

was fi nally leaving it behind. I had spent a year living and working with the family Guilloteau, joined the local theater group in its annual production, traveled to nearly every comer of France in a way that no tourist ever could, and had become so fl uent in my use of everyday French that strangers couldn’t place my origins. tention to maintenance and water quality. Yet, it’s just as im-portant. Few things are more vital than the water you and your family drink. A water well checkup by a qualified contractor will help ensure a reliable supply of fresh drinking water.“If it’s important, you schedule it. That’s what we do with den-

tal checkups, pediatric visits, even cars under warranty. Since the water you drink is important, we encourage all well owners to mark a date on the calendar each year to call and schedule a well checkup,” said Kevin McCray, National Ground Water As-sociation executive director.For many well owners, that time could be now. The National

Ground Water Association (NGWA) recommends a well main-tenance check and water test at least every 12 months. If you haven’t done so, now is a good time for a well checkup before a problem occurs, McCray said.According to NGWA, a well checkup should include: • A flow

These young cows are still growing as well as gestating their second calf. Thin cows and old cows may be wintered with these young cows.Second priority—average mature cow. She needs to be fed as

economically as possible until 30 days before the first calves are expected. They might be combined with the 2’s coming 3’s for the last part of gestation and during the calving season. In many cases, lush green grass may be all that is needed by mature cows.Lowest priority—yearling heifer expecting her first calf.

She comes into the winter in better condition compared to the cows that have nursed their calves. She will not need extra feed until after she calves so she will not skip her sec-ond calf. Don’t forget about replacement heifers and bulls. Heifers need to be fed to breed at 30 days before the “bull day” of the cows. The American Romney traces its beginnings to the marshy area of Kent

in England. Its origin lies with the old, established dual purpose Romney Marsh breed which was

improved with Leicester blood in the nineteenth century. Often swept with harsh winds and heavy rainfall, the Kent landscape is

abundant with lush forage.These geographic and climatic

conditions have led to the develop-ment of some specific character-istics in the Romney breed. These traits include hooves that are re-sistant to foot rot and fleeces that remain healthy in harsh weather. Due to the similar land topography and weather conditions, the Rom-ney breed made an easy transition to New Zealand and the Falkland Islands, where it became quickly established and still remains the predominant breed.In 1904, William Riddell and Sons

of Monmouth, Oregon, imported the first Romneys to North Ameri-ca, where their popularity increased rapidly. The American Romney Breeders Association was found-ed in 1912 by Joe Wing, a world traveler and a great judge of sheep.

At one time with the University of California, he was an early secre-tary of the ARBA, and his expertise was instrumental in the develop-ment of Romneys in America.The present-day American Romney

is a product of English, and more recently, New Zealand blood lines, which have enhanced the progress of the breed, and helped maintain a diverse gene pool within North America. We started our sheep farm in February of 2004. We began with our purchase

of “ROMEO” a purebred Registered Dorper Ram. We knew our flock was only as good as our Ram. We pur-chased a small flock of Rambouillet ewes that were bred to a Romanov. We needed the Romanov blood line for their history in multiple birth rates. My husband and I, we both grew up on large farms. Giving us the ex-perience in handling and caring for livestock. We found it necessary to find away to make our farm earn itʼs

That is how our farm was given itʼs name. We unexpectedly came across a Dorper crossbred lamb. It peaked our interest in the sheep industry. We knew we had to diversify to make it work. foraging abilities they did exceedingly well. Rambouilletʼs are a hardy stock which is evident in their lambs. We will use the Rambouillet ewes as our foundation stock, which will be bred up to our Dorper Ram, in the hopes of achieving quality show stock. In the Fall of 2004 we purchased “Zeus” a Purebred Registered Romanov Ram. He will add extra quality to our 50 Ro-manov ewe lambs. These percentage ewes will be the building block of our commercial flock. This Spring we will purchase another Purebred Dorper Ram. This will allow us to breed two unrelated bloodlines in our Percent-age and Purebred Dorper flock. These unrelated bloodlines will be crossed with one another to control over in-nerbreeding. This will lengthen the use of these rams. We have spent a lot of time and effort to make the neces-sary improvements to ensure our flock has a healthy and stress free living en-vironment. This lifestyle is a family affair and is thoroughly enjoyed.

growth rates, feed conversion efficiencies and carcass Quality has made Suffolks the premier terminal sire breed. However, one should not overlook the maternal cards that the Suffolk ewe brings to the table. Suffolk ewes are great mothers with milk production, flow, and udder Quality that are second to none. Well-bred Suffolks have great udder shape, with soft pliable udders that produce tremendous milk volume. Furthermore, the teats are small and well placed, so newborns can latch on for a full belly of colos-trum. In 1985, Kathy and Gary Zeilinger opened their doors at 1130 Weiss Street in Frankenmuth, MI. They

then began the third generation of pro-cessing raw animal fibers into warm and usable products for thousands of customers who wanted to DO some-thing with their fleeces. This included fiber from sheep, llama, alpaca, angora goats, dog, and angora bunnies. At their factory, they first scour all

incoming orders, then dry, open the stock for finishing and then card it into either batting, roving, or yarn., elimi-nating all vegetable matter. In 2004, they processed over 80,000# for indi-vidual customers. They make beautiful wool-filled

comforters, mattress pads, bed pil-lows, and hand stitched quilts. They are also able to redo them when they get worn. In another department, Zeilingers pro-

duce multi colors of roving, spinning batts, pindratted rovings, and combed top for handspinners and weavers.

They do custom dy-ing for the customers if they want to change the fibers from their natural color to more colorful end-products. They are able to do one fleece to thousands of pounds according to the customers wishes. In 2002, they added

a commercial yarn department and a de-hairing (for llama and cashmere) department which will eliminate guard hair and produce a soft luxurious fiber for either hands-pinning or yarn for knitting. Their latest venture is the acquisition

of sock knitting machinery. The yarnis made first and then the customer can have socks made to add to the list of available products from their animal’s shearings. Not only does the staff provide qual-

ity sendee, but they take time to edu-

cate their customers on ways to pre-pare fiber for the best return for their money. Zeilingers are especially well known for their dedication to each customers orders.
