A hot ticketBaz Luhrmann fell hard for the Kimberley. Her depth,

her one-off charm, the way the light fell on her

features; she was like nothing else on Earth.

He put her on the big screen and promised to make

her a star.

Naturally, she stole the show. Under the bright light

of Western Australia’s remote north, the Kimberley

has been playing ‘Australia’ for thousands of years.

It’s a scene-stealing performance, life changing and

inspirational. It’s on every day. Come see for yourself.

The Kimberley…

a star is born.

Relaxed star quality Picture this. Impossibly wide horizons. Rust-red

cliffs. Fat-trunked boab trees. Waterholes you

can drink from. Waterfalls you can swim to.

Gaping gorges. An inland sea. Vast tracts of

cattle country. Craggy ranges drenched with

colour. Super-sized fi sh. Diamonds. Pearls.

Giant bulbous rocks that take your breath away.

Now triple it, and imagine yourself there.

It’s not hard. The Kimberley is majestic and epic

in scale, but it’s warm and welcoming by nature.

Once you’re in its clutches, consider yourself

embraced. Be it the caress of coastal Broome

or the rugged hug of Kununurra and surrounds,

give in to the friendliness, the slow pace and

the hankering for rediscovery. Go on, let the

Kimberley under your skin.

Follow in Australia’s footsteps Home Valley Station. It is rumoured that Baz

Luhrmann had his ‘yes!’ moment here at sunset.

As the 1.9 billion year old Cockburn Range

changed from orange to purple to pink, he

knew he’d found the backdrop for ‘Australia’.

Visit ‘Luhrmann’s Lookout’ when staying at

this working cattle station with smart new

accommodation – million star camping to

fi ve star luxury. Horse riding, fi shing, canoeing

and waterholes enhance the pleasure.

(08 9161 4322; www.homevalley.com.au)

El Questro Station. The cattle droving scenes

and majestic Cockburn Range in ‘Australia’

were fi lmed on the million acre station with

an embarrassment of swimmable gorges

and thermal springs. Adventure options span

wilderness walks, boat trips and chopper rides.

It’s famous for its exclusive homestead, but you

can even be on a drover’s wage and stay here.

Cabins and camp sites are plentiful.

(08 9169 1777; www.elquestro.com.au)

Digger’s Rest Station. The ‘Australia’ crew

spent down time playing cricket on the dry

mud fl ats here, 40 kilometres off the Gibb River

Road, en route to some spectacular fi shing in

the King River. Muster some droving spirit on

a horse riding adventure.

Kimberley CharacterThe Kimberley breeds a special sort.

Sydneysiders Nicolle Fenech and

husband Chris were won over

by the Kimberley more than 15

years ago. Home is now Home

Valley Station, where ranges,

waterholes and fi sh-fi lled

rivers are on the doorstep.

What’s great about the Kimberley?

The landscapes are simply

mesmerising. It’s beauty that has to be

seen to be believed. Chris often says as we drive

along the Gibb River Road or watch another sunset

over the Cockburn Range that he could never tire

of looking at it.

What’s special about where you live?

With the Kimberley comes a beautiful collection

of Indigenous characters.

We feel extremely privileged to enjoy the company

of our second family here – warm, amazingly

generous and intelligent countrymen and women

who are a delight to learn from. They have a deep

knowledge and connection to the land. We feel

honoured to be able to explore this ancient place

with those who truly know it best.

“Not many people realise that

there are many different

tribes, with different

languages, lores and

cultural beliefs.”

Clifton BieundurryRaised in the Kimberley

bush, Clifton is a painter

whose works are

exhibited around the

world. He is also lead

singer of didgeridoo and

guitar band Groovylips

and the Yang.

Favourite sight, smell or sound from the Kimberley?

The night desert sky, the smell of my mother’s freshly

baked dampers and sitting on the banks of the

Fitzroy River fi shing with only the sounds of insects

and water rippling through the washed up branches.

What’s something most people don’t know about the Kimberley?

Not many people realise that there are many

different tribes, with different languages, lores and

cultural beliefs. Also, near my home community

there are caves with ancient paintings on the walls.

On hot days we used to drive there to spend the day

in the natural air conditioning and icy cold waters.

Enter the draw to win a trip to Western Australia, the Real Star of Australia, and come home with your own precious piece of the Kimberley, a $5,000 ring!

“I walked up to some bloke and asked him for directions... It was Hugh Jackman.”

Dave “Chilli” Chilcott

Former buffalo wrangler, fi shing guide and

crocodile catcher, Dave Chilcott brings a larrikin

streak and a font of knowledge to his role as El

Questro Station ranger.

What’s the story behind the crocodile tooth on your hat?

We were trapping crocodiles on a station. They

were attacking cattle, and there was good money

being offered by zoos in Europe. This one broke

out of its cage and left this tooth behind. So it’s

worth $30,000. But I’ll sell it to you for fi ve bucks.

Were you involved with the fi lming of ‘Australia’?

I took homestead guests to have

a look at the set. I knew the guy

in charge of the horses so I went

to say hello. I walked up to some

bloke and asked him for directions.

When I found my mate I asked him

‘So where’s all the big hob knobs,

Frankie?’ And he said ‘That guy

you were just talking to, he’s the

biggest.’ It was Hugh Jackman.

Broome TimeRelaxing is easy in Broome. Wafts of frangipani and

mango drift on the warm air. Wide white beaches

fringe brilliant cobalt seas. The pace is easy – they

don’t call it ‘Broome Time’ for nothing. And sunsets

over the Indian Ocean are made for romance.

Broome’s history as a pearling port lends Japanese,

Chinese and Malay infl uences to the cultural mix.

Aboriginal art, Asian food, world class pearls…

all coexist in this coastal town whose charm

punches above its weight.

Resort-style indulgence is a local specialty in Broome,

just 2.5 hours by air from Perth. But as the gateway

to the Kimberley outback, there’s much more.

Adventure – land, water or air based – is on tap.

Flap or fl op: you choose.

The pace is easy - they don’t call it ‘Broome Time’ for nothing.

West Coast BoastClear light, wide horizons, ready sunshine, easy

going attitude. Perth’s got it all. Mooch around the

character-laden port city of Fremantle, visit the

famous beaches, gaze at the city from the giant

green sanctuary of King’s Park & Botanic Garden.

Discover the secret of west coast living.

Just beachyNo visit to Perth is complete without dipping

your toes in the crystal clear waters of the Indian

ocean at one of the city’s many beaches. By day

enjoy dazzling white sand and glittering surf.

Come sundown, there’s the daily miracle of

sunsets over the water. Nowhere is the activity –

think swimming, snorkelling, surfi ng, pacing the

walkways and cafe hopping – more colourful than

at the iconic Cottesloe Beach. Get amongst it, or

people-watch through an ocean-facing window

with a cooling drink. Short trips are a Perth

specialty. There’s lots of variety and action within

easy reach of the city.

Did someone say boom?Mining isn’t the only leaps-and-bounds activity in

Western Australia. Wining and dining are on fi re

too. Changes to liquor licensing laws have seen an

infl ux of small bars and boutique eateries, offering

more choice for lovers of intimate spaces. Add to

that the solid high end dining options and the

rise of quality suburban bistros, and you’ve got a

sated appetite. Just leave room for fi sh and chips

by the water. And gelato anytime.

Getting thereQantas and Virgin Blue have regular fl ights to Perth

from all Australian capitals. Tiger Airways fl ies from

Melbourne and Adelaide.

When to goWith more hours of sunshine than any other

Australian capital city, Perth enjoys a true

and mild cool winters. Autumn is warm and calm;

Day TrippingPure relaxation is just a 30 minute ferry ride from

the mainland. At Rottnest Island, where the

primary mode of transport is bicycle, rediscover

old fashioned peace. Rotto, as it’s locally known,

is home to quokkas, quiet beaches and brilliant

turquoise snorkelling spots. A recent overhaul

of the facilities – including the famous Quokka

Arms hotel – makes it a perfect time to visit

Perth’s “off shore” playground.

At Fremantle, around 20 minutes drive along

the coast to the south, cafes, pubs, galleries and

niche shops bring charm and life to the streets.

Historic limestone buildings inhabit the west end

of the port city, in which fi sh and chips by the

harbour is a pastime without peer. On weekends,

an arty vibe and market atmosphere prevails.

For a more vine-focussed day trip, the Swan

Valley is an easy 25 minutes drive from the city.

Just beyond Perth’s outskirts, it’s blanketed

with vineyards and gourmet produce crops.

Art enthusiasts also fl ock here for the galleries

and studios that dot the trail of cellar doors and

restaurants. You can be back in time for

a famous Perth sunset.

Festive PerthPerth loves the outdoors, and it loves a

celebration. So it’s fi tting that the city comes to

life in summer with outdoor events and festivals

– many of them free.

As well as its premier arts event, the Perth

International Arts Festival (February 13 to March 8),

Perth turns on many music, theatre and cinema

events under its clear night skies. See Shakespeare

or a symphony in King’s Park, ballet or music in

an enchanting amphitheatre, movies in countless

outdoor cinemas and free street theatre at

random moments throughout the city.

Ningaloo splashNear the small coastal town of Exmouth, less than

three hours by plane from Perth, Ningaloo Reef has

gained an impressive reputation as one of Earth’s

last ocean paradises. It’s one of the largest fringing

reefs in the world and unlike many others, you can

get to it just by stepping off the beach.

Snorkel or dive with manta rays, sea turtles and

schools of brightly coloured fi sh in the clearest

water imaginable.

Just gorgeousThink water, but don’t just think ocean.

At Kalbarri, where the Murchison River meets

the sea, stunning gorges have been carved out

of sandstone over millions of years. You can take

short walks with great views, or gorge hikes of

up to fi ve days long. Easily accessible lookouts dot

the Kalbarri National Park.

On the coast, towering cliffs frame coastal gorges,

past which humpback whales migrate between

July and November. Their acrobatic displays can

be viewed just metres from the cliffs. Or share the

ocean with them on a fi shing charter as you try

your hand at luring local tailor and mulloway.

Looking for marine magic to be enchanted by?

Here it is. Turtles, manta rays, dolphins, whale

sharks and migrating whales all grace the waters

of Western Australia’s mid north coast.

And so can you. Swimming with whale sharks

and manta rays is one of those lifelong memories

waiting to be made. Do it with a tour operator out

of Exmouth or Coral Bay.

At Monkey Mia, a famous pod of wild dolphins has

been visiting the beach since the 1960s. A dolphin

interaction area helps protect them, as well as

providing a place for a lucky few to throw fi sh treats

to the dolphins at breakfast time.

The World Heritage Listed Shark Bay has spectacle

in spades. See dolphins, dugongs and rays from the

sand dunes at Francois Peron National Park. From a

boat, look out for Loggerhead turtles, considered the

most endangered turtle species nesting in Australia.

Fields of goldIf it’s genuine outback character you’re after,

Western Australia’s goldfi elds region delivers.

Follow the Goldfi elds Trail for a dose of fl ora,

history, Wheatbelt hospitality and ghostly intrigue.

There’s a lot of nuggets to uncover from Perth to

Kalgoorlie and beyond.

The remoteness and changing fl ora along the route

through Merredin, Southern Cross and Coolgardie is

a quiet thrill in itself, but the big surprise is seeing a

thriving centre rising out of the landscape at the twin

towns of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Restaurants and pubs

line the wide streets of the historic gold mining

town, where veins of gold still run deep. See the

giant open cut mine known as the Super Pit, learn

about the CY O’Connor pipeline that took water

from Perth to Kalgoorlie, or tour the infamous

brothel strip.

Beyond the colour and night life of Kalgoorlie lies

more history and eerie beauty. Ghost towns that

once teemed with life now stand as relics to the

1890s gold rush. Intriguing ruins, quaint surviving

hotels and vast salt lakes dot the landscape. See a

genuine bush pub at Kookynie, visit an interactive

museum at Laverton and wander through

abandoned tin humpies at Gwalia.

In wildfl ower season, everything from everlastings

to poached egg daisies pop up amidst the

ever-changing backdrop of grass trees, fi rebush,

gums and banksias.n gums and banksias.

Statues in the saltFine art in the outback landscape of Western

Australia’s goldfi elds? Why not? British sculptor

Antony Gormley chose the dry salt bed of

Lake Ballard as the place to install more than

50 metal sculptures in 2003. Modelled loosely

on the townsfolk of nearby Menzies, the

human-like sculptures are spaced out across

several square kilometres of the huge salt lake.

Visitors can walk across the crusty salt to take

in the whimsical and improbable sight. In the

afternoon light, long shadows streak the lake.

Wildfl owers are so happily entrenched in

Western Australia they stopped counting at

12,000 species. Delicate orchids, vibrant grevilleas

and whimsical blankets of gelato-coloured

everlastings are among the blooms that dominate

the landscape from winter to spring.

A drive through character-laden country towns

like Kalgoorlie and Esperance is doubly appealing

when the landscape is ablaze with wildfl owers.

Choose a route, and see wide open farming

country or vast outback scrub transformed by

colourful fl oral sprays.

Dolphin Bay, Esperance

Blue beautyThe wildfl ower marvel stretches right to the southern

coastal port of Esperance. On this spectacular ocean

drive, it won’t just be the fl owers taking your

breath away. Try not gasping at the turquoise sea

and squeaky white beach sand. The brilliance extends

into the Cape Le Grand National Park, where fl owers

dot the grasslands, kangaroos play on the beaches

and parading whales play offshore. You can get up

close to the blue beauty of Esperance on a short

cruise, weaving around the islands of the archipelago

alongside seals, sea lions, dolphins and sea eagles.
