ABOUT disney’s newsies Disney’s Newsies is based on the real-life Newsboys’ Strike of 1899. They were mostly poor orphans and runaways with no place to go who slept on the streets of New York City. The money they earned from selling newspapers was used for their needs for survival and to pay for more papers to sell the following day. War was bad for the world but great for the newspaper business. The Spanish-American War made New Yorkers hungry for headlines, and circulation boomed. Once the war ended, people were less inclined to buy newspapers. When their price was raised, the newsies were not willing to pay more for their papers to make up for a lack of headlines. They decided to strike for a fair price for newspapers. The New York newsies went up against two newspaper publishers, Joseph Pulitzer of The World and William Randolph Hearst of The Journal. Their goal was to make the news-paper tycoons treat them as legitimate members of the business. The strike lasted two weeks, from July 19 to August 2, 1899. The newsboys drew support from newsies all over the Northeast, as well as other young workers like messenger boys, bootblacks, and factory workers. The strike is significant in his-tory, as it is one of the first strikes that was carried out by children and ended in compromise. The kids won! In 1992 Walt Disney Studios released a live-action musical based on the real-life events of the Newsboys’ Strike. With a screenplay by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White and a score written by Oscar-winning composer, Alan Menken, and lyricist, Jack Feldman. Though it was not a hit in theaters, its memorable score, and athletic dance numbers made it a fan favorite, and it quickly gained a cult following.

Disney Theatrical Group developed a stage play with lyricist Jack Feldman, Academy Award-winning composer, Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act), and Tony Award-winning playwright Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). They began a several year pro-cess of making Newsies as beloved onstage as it was onscreen. In 2011, a four-week engagement of Newsies was mounted at Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. When that production received rave reviews and great international interest, the produc-ers announced a limited Broadway run. Directed by Jeff Calhoun, the original cast of the Broadway production featured Jeremy Jordan as Jack, Kelly John Dossett as newspaper tycoon Joseph Pulitzer, Kara Lindsay as Katherine Plumber. Newsies opened at the Nederlander Theatre on March 29, 2012, where it played for more than 1,000 performances before embarking on a National tour. Newsies was nominated for 8 Tony awards including Best Musical. It won for Best Choreography (Christopher Gattelli) and Best Original Score. The themes in Newsies have become more relevant than ever; A group of young people standing up and saying ‘no more’ to the injustices going on in the world. Newsies has been cited as a call to arms for the exploited and oppressed, urging grassroots action to organize, protest and agitate for change. It emphasizes the importance of a fearless free press to report injustice and stand as a watchdog for those without a platform.“The things we do today will be tomorrow’s news...Nothing can break us, no one can make us give our rights away,” - The Newsies

BOB FUNkING AND BILL STUTLER (Owners/Executive Producers) On July 9, 2019, the Westchester Broadway Theatre will celebrate its

45th Anniversary, as well as the 30th Anniversary in this specifically designed, state of the art the-atre. Bill and Bob, 2004 inductees into the “Westchester County Business Hall of Fame,” pioneered the Dinner Theatre concept in Westchester when they opened An Evening Dinner Theatre on July 9, 1974. Having designed and built An Evening from the ground up as a theatre that serves dinner and lunch, they estab-lished their operation as a cultural mainstay in the tri-state area. Theatre is the only year round theatre in Westchester where Broadway performers, direc-tors and designers gather to create the best in Musical Theatre. (They have produced more shows than most Broadway producers. Disney’s Newsies, we are proud to say, is their 210th Production!) The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the longest running, 52 week a year Equity theatre in the State of New York. Each show is produced exclusively for the theatre and each is approached in the same manner as Broadway Productions: casting Broadway per-formers at auditions in New York City, and hir-ing the creative staff (Directors, Choreographers, Musical Directors, Set, Costume and Lighting Designers). On the dark nights of the musicals, Bill and Bob have presented over 900 Monday and Tuesday night specials and, in 1997, inaugu-rated the Gold Star Series of Concerts present-ing Jackie Mason to a sold-out house. Other great performers in the Gold Star series have been Tom Jones, George Carlin, Paul Anka, Wayne Newton, and Harry Belafonte. With the continued support of the people of the tri-state area, we pledge to continue to present the best in theatre and dining.
