Timetabling and planning for 2019 is in full swing and I thank all of our teachers for their tireless work. Our HSC students have completed their examinations and were able to celebrate the end of their studies at WWHS through a wonderful formal dinner. A special thanks to their year advisors Ms Bergan and Mrs Hetherington, for supporting these students throughout their high school journey. Ms Bergan and Mrs Meredith did a terrific job organising a very nice formal dinner with some heartfelt speeches. I would also like to thank the sports club for their excellent catering and the quality of their service. We wish all of our Year 12 the very best in their future pursuits and they have certainly been wonderful ambassadors for our school and their families. Our rotary exchange students returned from their week long experience in the Penrith area and by all accounts were very well cared for and gained lots of new experiences in different career areas. We value the opportunities our students gain from this experience and we thank both the West Wyalong and Nepean Rotary clubs for supporting this program. A special thank you to Ms Forster who does a great job organising the documentation and liaising with the clubs. It was nice to have a special visit from the acting Prime Minister Mr Michael McCormack who attended our school last Thursday morning to present his annual ANZAC writing awards to our students. Over 120 schools participated in this writing competition. Congratulations to Jorja Hill who won the competition and Jack Johnson who was “runner up”. Both students received special book awards for their outstanding efforts. Mr McCormack praised our school for our involvement in this competition over the time it has run across his electorate. He mentioned that our school continues to lead the way and he acknowledged the quality of our school. Mr McCormack has been a regular visitor to our school and he visits many schools and it is nice to be recognised by a person in his position. It was also a great opportunity for our new school leaders to meet and discuss their futures with him. I think some of our leaders were impressed by the security surrounding his visit. Thank you to our P&C who met with me last Monday and discussed our recent external validation. Please consider joining the P&C in 2019. We meet Monday, Week 5 each term at 7.00pm. It is a great opportunity to stay in touch with recent events within our school and an opportunity to show your support for our brilliant school. AUSTRALIAN WOOL INNOVATIONS SHEARING SCHOOL During Week 3 of Term 4 eleven students from West Wyalong High School participated in a Shearing School.

The students included; Thomas Ryan, Charlie Tulloch, Zane Lemon, Harrison Thomas, Bobby Jones, Luke Thompson, Marney Jameison, Toby Rees, Jack Jameison, Chloe Worner and Max Wilson.

During the week the students learnt the importance of eating healthy food and getting plenty of sleep. They were shown stretching exercises to do before they start shearing and the importance of having a straight back while shearing.

At the start of the week the students crutched the sheep to get a feel of the handpiece and worked through all the different processes involved in shearing a sheep. As the week progressed, they worked through, for example, the back leg, long blow, bellies, neck etc. By Friday, the students were able to shear a full sheep.

The students also learnt the correct way to set up a handpiece, how to clean the combs and cutter and how to grind.

Andrew the woolclasser showed the students how to operate a hydraulic wool press and how to separate the wool into correct lines for example, fleece wool, bellies, pieces and locks.

I would like to thank Australian Wool Innovations for allowing our school to conduct a shearing school in our local area. The two instructors Shaun Wilson and Andrew Newstead were fantastic and provided our students with a very positive week and gave them an insight into the shearing and wool industry.
