COMMUNITY CORNER

As we all know, on the fourth Thursday of each month, all of the GHBC residents are invited to a “Town Hall” meeting. Believe it or not, this activity has a very interesting history. In the beginning, and there is always a beginning, the Executive Director of Goodwin House West, David Burke, created what he intended to be a “fireside chat” that he called “Hi Tea.” (He must have had a good sense of humor.) He would meet with a few residents in the old living room and, over a cup of coffee or tea, and would have an informal chat. As the number of residents grew, the new Executive Director, Linda Lateana, moved the Hi Tea to the Atrium. Hi Tea became more informative than just a friendly chat and soon had to be moved to The Top of the West and, ultimately, to the Auditorium. Teas and coffee along with sweet cakes continued to be provided as a resident treat. Since small, fireside-like chats were no longer the purpose, the name was changed to “Town Hall.” Justin Carwile, our current Executive Director, continues these informative and issue sharing talks and has added an Agenda. Thus, every resident knows what is on his mind. Time is still provided for residents to raise their concerns or note points of interest. Realizing the importance of such a gathering, as well as appreciating the refreshments, residents at GHBC make it a point to attend. We look forward to seeing everyone next Thursday, August 23, at 2:00 p.m., in the Auditorium Dottie Moser, Resident

GOODWIN HOUSE ALEXANDRIA POOL—CLOSED DUE TO CONSTRUCTION

Goodwin House Alexandria is having construction done on their pool after Labor Day, tentatively from

Wednesday, September 5, through Friday, September 21. During the interim, they will be using the pool at

Goodwin House Baileys Crossroads. We want to extend a warm welcome to their residents while they use

our pool!

READ AGAIN—LIONS CLUB READING GLASSES GIVEAWAY

Do you find that newspapers are using smaller print – making it hard to read? Maybe you need reading

glasses. Goodwin House Foundation, in cooperation with the Bailey’s Crossroads Host Lions Club, will

distribute reading glasses in the Rotunda on Wednesday, August 22, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.. Whether you

are a resident or a staff member, there is no charge for these reading glasses.

VETERAN’S COMMITTEE MOVIE

The Veteran’s Committee will be presenting the movie Memphis Belle on Tuesday, August 28, at 7:15 p.m.

in the Auditorium. The "Memphis Belle" is a World War II bomber, piloted by a young crew on dangerous

bombing raids into Europe. The crew only has to make one more bombing raid before they have finished

their duty and can go home. In the briefing before their last flight, the crew discovers that the target for the

day is Bremen, a heavily-defended town that invariably causes many Allied casualties. Also see the dog that

steals the show.

WELLS FARGO BANK SHUTTLE

GHBC Transportation will be providing a shuttle to the Wells Fargo Bank in the Trader Joe’s plaza. This

shuttle service will begin Tuesday, August 21. Since we do not want to overwhelm the bank with a busload

of customers, we will be using one of our smaller vehicles and providing transport every half hour. Please

sign up for a time slot in the Resident Business Center so the driver knows who and how many to expect.

The schedule is as follows, with adjustments to be made if necessary:

Tuesdays 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. on the hour and half hour

Thursdays 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon on the hour and half hour

Fridays 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. on the hour and half hour
