• Student and community-driven effort

WHY GEOTHERMAL?

• Desire for an efficient, simple and user-controllable HVAC system.

• Availability of vertical and horizontal land for installation.

LESSONS LEARNED

• Up-front communication with all applicable agencies.

• Use a Mechanical Engineer with proven Geothermal System experience.

• Use a qualified Geothermal consultant

• Confirm site conditions with a minimum of four (4) test bores

LESSONS LEARNED

• Prequalify Geothermal contractors to assure capacity and ability to perform.

• Ensure scope of work is clearly defined in contract documents, as installation is typically done by specialty contractors.

• Importance of construction sequencing.

PHASE II SUSTAINABLE GOALS

Building upon Phase I with:

• Natural Ventilation in Public Spaces

• Radiant Floor Heating

• Displacement Ventilation

• Recycled water in HVAC system hydronics, urinals, water closets & landscape irrigation

PHASE II BY THE NUMBERS

• 98.5% of energy use comes from renewable resources with expected utility cost savings of 99.3%.

• 45% reduction in water use.

• Landscape design uses 65.75% less water than a typical design.

• Non-potable water for irrigation and a majority of toilets and urinals.

LOOKING AHEAD…

• With each project, expectations have risen and as of the most recent Mission College Master Plan Update the new goals include a minimum of LEED Platinum certification with the goal of Net Zero by 2020.

LONGER-TERM GOALS

• Identify feasibility of certifying all existing buildings on West Valley campus under LEED.

• Discourage use of disposable bags at Mission College.

• Undergo continuous energy auditing and establish an energy audit plan.

• Expand building management automation system use.
