A very warm welcome to our Annual Prize Giving. The Abbeyschool community gathers tonight to celebrate the manyoutstanding successes of the past year in terms of academicachievements and also in terms of extracurricular activities and ourinvolvement in the wider community.This evening the graduatescelebrate that they achieved the best ‘A’ Level results in the school’shistory. We continue to glow in the success of the MacRory andHogan Cup wins and we applaud all who continue to contribute tothe disadvantaged, locally in our social outreach programme andinternationally in immersion projects to India, Kenya and Zambia.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our graduates. It is greatto see you back in the Abbey – many, many congratulations on allyour achievements.Also a special welcome back to the Abbey to ourdistinguished guest speaker tonight Brother Edmund Garvey.Brother Garvey taught in the Abbey from 1970 – 1984 leading aninnovative religion department. He was also the community leader inNewry before joining the Province Leadership Team. In 1990 he waselected as assistant to the Congregation Leader in Rome and in1996, the year of the beatification of Blessed Edmund Rice, he waselected Congregation Leader. During these twelve years Br Garveytravelled to all twenty six countries in which the Christian Brothershad missions.
Br Garvey returned to Ireland in 2002 and has served as Director ofCommunications for the Christian Brothers. We are delighted heaccepted our invitation to return to the Abbey and be with us onceagain in the school which remembers him so fondly.
On behalf of the Board of Governors I offer our thanks andappreciation to all associated with tonight’s celebration, past pupils,parents, staff and students.
I wish to thank in a particular way the parents of all the studentsgathered tonight. I thank them for their continued support andloyalty.
I also wish to thank and congratulate the entire staff of the Abbeyfor all their best efforts, commitment and dedication.
In conclusion I hope that you all enjoy the presentation evening andI invite you to join us for light refreshments in the school canteen atthe end of the evening.

Brother Edmund Garvey was born in Drogheda, Co.Louth. He was second youngest of a family of seven. Forhis education, he attended the local Christian BrothersPrimary and Secondary Schools. He completed hisLeaving Certificate in Colaiste Chiaráin, Bray, Co.Wicklow. He graduated from University College Dublinand did post-graduate studies at The Queen’s University,Belfast and Mount Oliver Institute of Religious Education,Dundalk. He received a Doctor of Humane Letters,Honoris Causa, from Iona College, New Rochelle, NewYork.
He made his Perpetual Profession as a Christian Brotherin 1970. He taught in Belfast and at Abbey GrammarSchool, Newry, 1970-1984. He was Community Leader inNewry before going to Dublin to join the ProvinceLeadership Team of St. Mary’s. In 1990, he was elected anAssistant to the Congregation Leader in Rome and in1996, the year of the beatification of Blessed EdmundRice, he was elected Congregation Leader. In thosetwelve years Brother Garvey travelled from Rome to alltwenty six countries in which the Christian Brothers hadmissions.
He returned to Ireland in 2002 where he has served asDirector of Communications for the Christian Brothersand has chaired a number of committees for the re-organisation of the Christian Brothers Congregation inIreland and England. In 1999, Brother Garvey attendedthe second Vatican Synod on the Church in Europe andmore recently he has been a member of the ReligiousLife Commission of the Conference of Religious ofIreland.
He has the happiest of memories of life and work in thecity of Newry. He remembers his stay here as somethinglike being at home because his father, who came fromsouth Armagh, often spoke of Newry. He remembers TheAbbey as one of the friendliest and most creativeeducational environments in the network of ChristianBrother Schools.

This award commemorates Mervyn Abrahamson whograduated from the Abbey in the early 1900s and wholater became an eminent Physician in London.
Chemistry Stephen Begley – Pro. L Abrahamson Award
This award commemorates Leonard Abrahamson, agraduate from the Abbey in the early 1900s who laterbecame President of the Royal College of Physicians.
Maths Stephen Begley – P.A. Sweeney Award
The name of Paddy Sweeney was synonymous with theteaching of Mathematics in the Abbey in the 1940s, 50sand 60s. He took such great enjoyment in solvingproblems and so conveyed this to his students that manywere inspired to follow his footsteps.
Further Maths Stephen Begley – Bro J G Gibbons Award
This award celebrates the memory of Br J G Gibbonswho taught mathematics in the Abbey during the 70’s. Hebrought an energy and dedication to his teaching andextended this to the area of gaelic football in the school.
Physics Kevin McManus – Bro M. K. Farrell Award
Brother M.K. Farrell was a popular and caring teacher inthe Abbey in the 1960s and 70s. His work in the PhysicsLab was matched by his enthusiasm on the playing fieldsand he made a lasting impression in the lives of manyAbbey students.
Business Studies Kevin McManus– Bro J. B. Hynes Award
This award commemorates the life of Brother J.B. Hynes.During his teaching career in the Abbey in the 1960s and70s, he was a popular figure whose grasp of businessaffairs and fundraising was remarkable. His humorousapproach to teaching colleagues and his pupils made hima popular friend to all who worked with him.
Drama Mark Rodgers – Bro I. M. Liston Award
This award celebrates the distinguished teaching careerof Brother I. Liston. For over 53 years in Newry BrotherListon conveyed to thousands of Abbey students anawareness and appreciation of English Literature, Poetryand dramatic expression.
Sociology Mark Rodgers – Bro J. D. McDonald Award
This award celebrates the work carried out by the lastChristian Brother who served as Headmaster in theAbbey Grammar School. His period of office ismemorable for the quality and extent of change heinitiated. Irish Sean McClory– P.A. Crinion Award
Paddy Crinion was a distinguished member of the Abbeystaff for three decades in the 1940s, 50s and 60s.Arecognised expert in Latin he was equally gifted in Irishand during his time in Newry was involved in all aspectsof Irish Culture and Language.
Music Sean McClory– Augustus Toremans Award
Gus Toremans was an enthusiastic and dedicated teacherof music in the Abbey for almost a quarter of a century.His wonderful vocabulary and love of his subject broughtan appreciation of all types of music to his students whowill always remember him with admiration and joy.
ICT Darren Fegan – Bro. D.W. Lynam Award
This award celebrates the work of an outstandingMathematician who saw the beginning of the Computerrevolution in the Abbey school during his term asHeadmaster in the 1970s. His long period of service inNewry saw numerous students benefit greatly from hislogical and enquiring mind.
Economics Daniel McAlinden– P.J. Kane Award
This award is dedicated to the memory of P.J. Kane adistinguished past teacher. P.J. introduced Economics tothe Abbey and during his teaching career he inspiredboth staff and pupils with his courage and dedication.
English Philip Knox – Bro T.L Magee Award
Brother T. L. Magee will always be remembered in theAbbey as an excellent Headmaster and as aninspirational teacher of English.A gentle Kerryman hewas as big in heart as in stature.
History Donal Kane – Bro P.W. Newell Award
Brother P.W. Newell was a legend in the Abbey where heserved as a teacher and as a Headmaster during the1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s.As a Historian, his attention todetail was remarkable and as Headmaster he wasresponsible for the planning and building of the presentschool which was opened in 1966.
Spanish Francis Boyle– Jack Cushnan Award
This award commemorates the work in the Abbey ofJack Cushnan who as Head of the Spanish Departmentin the 1960s and 70s saw his subject achieve new statusin the school curriculum.When he left the school hebecame Headmaster of the British Council Schools inCali, Columbia and Madrid, Spain.
Art Stephen Hudson – Bro T. F. Beausang Award
Brother Beausang had perhaps the longest period ofservice in the Newry school where his love of Languageand Art widened the minds of generations of Abbeystudents and his creative talents acted as a spur toliterally thousands of students who have benefited fromhis teaching.
French Steven Corcoran– Brendan Cassidy Award
Brendan Cassidy was a popular and dedicated teacherwho served Abbey students for almost twenty years inthe 1950s and 60s.As Head of the French Departmenthe displayed a dedication and thoroughness to theteaching of his subject which was inspirational to hisstudents.
Geography Christopher Donnelly – Bro. H. C. O’Hara Award
This award is dedicated to the memory of a gentle andcaring teacher who after his return from a period oftime in India served the largest part of his teachingcareer in the Abbey where his many pupils recall himwith warmth and devotion.
Physical Education Shane Kerr– Bro. P. C. McFarland Award
This award is dedicated to the memory of Brother P.McFarland and his enthusiastic approach to the teachingof English but more appropriately to his love of Gaelicgames. He will long be remembered as a colossus of theAbbey playing fields where he displayed a drive forsuccess that will be long remembered by legions ofAbbey sportsmen.
Politics Christopher Woods– Bro. D. L. O’Donnell Award
This award commemorates the life and work of BrotherD.L. O'Donnell who had an abiding interest andknowledge of political affairs in Ireland. He had anexceptionally long connection with the Abbey GrammarSchool where he celebrated his centenary in 1998.
Religious Studies John Clarke – Bro.W.A. Byrne Award
Brother W.A. Byrne is one of those Abbey legends, a manof rare vivacity and enthusiasm. During his prolongedperiod of service in the school he was a shining exampleof the religious calling of Brother Edmund Rice. Hisattention to the disadvantaged in society and especiallyto the African Foreign Missions was unequalled.
Technology David Boyle– Bro. C.I. Gallagher Award
This award is dedicated to the long service in the Abbeyof Brother C.I. Gallagher in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Duringhis career both as a teacher and as Headmaster in theschool he had a consuming passion for scientific andtechnological developments, a passion that he used tomodernise the school for the benefit of his students.
Psychology Francis Quinn– Bro.W. O. Murphy Award
Bro.W. O. Murphy was a committed and outstandingeducator. He was Vice Principal of the Abbey during the70’s and 80’s. He had a long distinguished career in theschool and loved teaching Irish.

A2 100% Module MarkThese awards are presented to those students who have achieved a remarkably high standard ofacademic performance when they were awarded a 100% pass mark in one or more of the moduleexaminations which they completed in January/June of 2006.
Best in Modern Languages 2005/2006Christina Fitzsimmons Trophy - Steven Corcoran
This award is presented to the pupil who achieved the highest marks across the range of Modern Languages at ‘A’Level. The trophy was donated by Mr.Tom Kelly. The award seeks to recognise the outstanding contributions in thefield of Modern Languages made by Mrs. Fitzsimmons during her teaching career in the Abbey 1968 – 1983 and is afitting recognition of the high esteem held by her past pupils of the work done by Mrs Fitzsimmons in and out of herclassroom.

Headmaster Bursaries – Pupils nominated for Headmaster Bursaries at last years Annual Prizegiving.
The John Grant Memorial Award - Kevin DyasThis award is presented to the student who has made the biggest contribution to Gaelic Football during the last school year and commemorates John Grant ‘a gentle giant’ and an outstanding member of the 1974 MacRory Cup team who died suddenly and tragically following his apparent recovery from a serious car accident.
T. P. Murphy Award – Kevin McKernanThe Abbey Sports Association annually presents this award to the student who is the outstanding sportsmanof the year. The trophy commemorates T. P. Murphy a founder member of the Abbey Sports Association and an outstanding sporting past pupil of the Abbey.
Head Boy Award – Steven LoveThis award goes to Steven Love to recognise his role as leader of the Abbey Students Association. This groupseeks to reflect the views of all students in the school.
Pat Mooney Award – Seán McCloryThis award donated by Mr Pat Mooney at the time of his retirement seeks to recognise the student who during the last year made the major contribution to the overall life of the school over the widest range of activities.
Endeavour Award – Kevin O’ReillyEach year in the school situation there are pupils who, although faced with problems and difficulties, have the courage and determination to face these challenges and successfully meet the test. This special award goes to the Abbey pupil who in the year 2005/2006 met his challenge and emerged the winner.
Headmaster’s BursariesThese valuable bursaries are given each year by the Headmaster to recognise the high contributions made by a largenumber of pupils to the life of the school in the field of extra-curricular activities.
Each year the relevant Head of Department in consultation with his/her teaching colleagues nominates a number ofcandidates for these awards. The Headmaster selects the recipient in each category from the following nominees.
