The Independent Party ledAdministration in Southend haveincreased Council Tax by 3.99%meaning Council Tax bills will riseon average by £46. LocalConservatives would have asked
residents in a local referendum ifthey were happy with the Tax rise.
When in opposition, theIndependent Party claimed that highparking charges hit businesses andthey would make the first hour free.
During their time in power, parkingcharges have been raised by over20%. Conservatives have opposedall rises in car parking charges.
In June 2014, the Leader of theCouncil claimed that the Council hadto live within its means and that allprojects had to be fully costed andsaved up for. In their two years inpower, the Independent Party haveincreased Council borrowing by over
£15 Million.
All residents wanting a gardenwaste collection service have to nowsubscribe to the 52 week ‘enhancedservice. This means 19,000households in the borough face a
rise of up to 37% for their gardenwaste collection service.
Although Council Tax has risen, localservices have been cut. Over
£1 Million has been taken out of thewaste budget, 5 officers who issuefines for dog fouling and fly tippinghave been fired, litter bins havebeen removed and the issuing ofwhite textile recycling bags havebeen abolished. Yet in this yearsbudget, the Administration arespending £30,000 ‘to encourageresidents to keep the town clean’.
It will now cost an extra £150 underthis Administration to bury lovedones as cremation fees have beenincreased in a policy to deliberatelytarget the elderly. Charges to visitthe Pier have also risen by over 20%.
