The West Salem Tree Project By Barry Lyons Coordinator, West Salem Tree Project A few years ago one of our West Salem neighbors mentioned to me that she thought that the neighborhood would be much prettier with the addition of street trees. At that time, she and I made an effort to encourage Keep Winston Salem Beautiful to name West Salem as a Community Roots Day. That effort didn’t pan out, but an idea was planted in my head that never quite went away. Corridors make the first impression that one has of an area and it seemed to me that our corridors needed to be more inviting. Two years ago, I went with some of the neighborhood leaders to discuss this idea with Mayor Joines and Councilperson Leight. From that conversation emerged a public/private partnership that would become known as The West Salem Tree Project. Frankly, my initial idea for this project was on the scale of “raise a little money, plant a few trees.” I had no idea that the project would grow to the scale it did. West Salem raised $10,500.00 to be used for tree planting in the neighborhood. A portion of it went to purchase the trees that were planted on Academy and Hutton Streets. The rest was combined with the funds raised by Keep Winston Salem Beautiful to plant on Broad Street. At the completion, over 900 trees and shrubs were planted in West Salem. However, this project went so far beyond just putting trees and shrubs in the ground. On October 8, we gathered as a community, had coffee and fellowship and set out to work. Around 45 volunteers planted 160 trees, including 9 nine huge trees on Hutton that seemed impossible to get into the ground. Later, we enjoyed a delicious lunch sponsored by the West Salem Civic Club and compared war stories about the enormous job we had just completed. This was the very best of West Salem, the gathering of friends to make our neighborhood a good place to live. On October 22, we saw a city wide gathering of over 500 volunteers come together to plant on Broad Street. What a humbling and gratifying experience it was to have so many come to work together for the common purpose of beautifying our city. I wish that I could list every single person that helped to make this idea a reality, but you are far too numerous. Each one of you was a piece of a puzzle that couldn’t have been solved without you. Dear Editor (and fellow tree planter), You guys in West Salem are the greatest! What a special time was had by all the tree planters on Oct. 8th; and we get to do it again on Oct. 22nd (if our old backs hold out). Imagine what your work will look like in a few years! Many thanks to the West Salem Civic Club for the delicious lunch. Can anyone tell me why civic club hot dogs taste better than others? Molly Leight

Wanted: Renters

by Judith Ruff Did you know that West Salem has a large percentage of rental homes? We are rolling out the WELCOME mat to our renters to join us and get involved in your community. We want you to feel a part in helping West Salem grow. This is everyone's community who lives here. The definition of community according to Webster's dictionary is "any group living in the same area or having interests, work, etc. in common; a body of people having common interests or living in one locality .” This means that every decision that is made for the betterment of our community will affect EVERYONE in the community. Please join us at the neighborhood gatherings that are the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm to voice your opinions and see exactly what is going on in the area you call home. Remember our motto: West Salem, Putting the Unity in Community since 1782! With your help we can show others what makes our community a great place to live.
