As we say goodbye to summer, we say hello to the beginning of the harvest season. From

August to November, a beautiful drive into the borough from any direction entices visitors with bands of gold grain and deep moss greenery in Greater Reading’s scenic landscape.

In this issue, we help guide you into a seasonal celebration in one of the most beautiful, vibrant neighborhoods in Berks County.

Around here, compassionate community members, including volunteers, residents and merchants, cooperate to keep the beautiful energy of West Reading safe, relaxing and fun. With recent Paint the Town projects underway, a whole new city block will be accented in bright, charming colors—much like the mums that will soon line the Avenues. Just as the hay bales roll in for the biggest celebration of the season—West Reading’s Fall Festival on the Avenue—you’ll most likely work up a thirst for all things fall. Begin your fall into the Avenues on page 12.

Experience West Reading as a retreat from it all. Some of the best-kept beauty and wellness secrets are behind closed spa doors in the dimly lit relaxation rooms, while some of the most revitalizing services are in these small salons that pack a lot of talent. Few feelings can match that of coming home. After a busy freshman year away at college, I looked forward to a

relaxing summer at home with no set plans or vacations. The next three months were mine to get back into the swing of things here in Berks County and explore my old stomping grounds.

The West Reading Avenues blog began as a way for me to be produc-tive during my summer recess, but it quickly became the portal through which I rediscovered my West Reading. As I embarked on this journey I reminisced about all

the Tuesday nights my family spent at GNA Ristorante; Sunday mornings with friends at Taste of Crepes; browsing Hello Bluebird where I’d purchased many birthday gifts; and scouring the racks at Bella Jules, shopping for prom dresses. As I walked the streets I often ran into old classmates and neighbors, even a former babysitter or two. Every time I went back to the Avenues I was reminded

of all the time I spent growing up there. I thought that I knew every corner of the

town, but came to realize that I’d only just scratched the surface. Sure, I’d been to the Reading Health Systems’ annual Garden Party many times and spent long hours enjoying the borough’s annual Art on the Avenue event. I even toured the Sunday morning Farmers’ Market once or twice in past years. Now, however, I saw everything again through the lens of my camera, cap-turing for the first time the community and cohesive nature of the events as they brought everyone together.

I started to talk to the shop owners, work-ers, and regular customers. I discovered things I never knew about the Avenues—that you could play any instrument you want at Earth Rhythms and that Say Cheese! hosts Jazz Nights on the second Friday of every month. Soon my Sundays were spent at Café Har-mony’s (now Cagg’s Caffè Libertà, under new owner, Donna Cagnotti) open mics and on weekday mornings I would grab a quick bite at one of the many cafes before a walk through the Reading Public Muse-um’s arboretum. I was ducking into stores I never had shopped before to see what they offered, and I was never disappointed. Every new store that had appeared since I went to school was waiting to be explored. I walked the Avenues several times a week and never tired of them. It was like my childhood all over again, but this time better and more exciting. There was always something going on—a festival, a block party or Wine Walk, and, by engaging with everyone I met, I began to get the most out of every visit.

It’s not hard to figure out what makes the Avenues thrive. The shopkeepers have an obvious passion for what they do, each with their own unique store or restaurant but all working together to create a fun and welcoming environment in West Reading. The variety of shops is incredible, with stores selling anything from pet supplies to sec-ondhand children’s clothes. With so many different stores, it would be easy to have a disconnect among shopkeepers, yet they have all come together to deliver events that give Berks County residents even more reason to stop by the Avenues. Whether it’s staying open later every second Friday or setting up a booth at a festival, the stores’ owners put an incredible amount of effort

into making West Reading a destination place. This was something I’d never noticed or appreciated growing up, but became evident as I spent more time on the Avenues.

When I went to Art on the Avenue I was blown away by the number of people that had come out to the event. Of course I ran into many friends and old neighbors, but there were so many more people than I’d ever remembered when attending this event during my childhood. Every store was open, and many had opened booths outside to attract even more customers. There were artists and entrepreneurs from across the mid-Atlantic region coming to West Reading to sell creative, new products. There were food trucks, side-

walk sales, art galleries and live music. All the things I’d enjoyed in previous years were still there, but with a new appreciation for West Reading I realized how much work and effort was put into the festival to create such a lively, success-ful fun-filled event.

Second Fridays are an-other perfect example of the shop owners’ collab-orative efforts to create a destination. Stores stay

open late so shoppers can visit after work to browse, shop and stay for dinner and drinks at the many eateries along the Avenues. This is the night when you’re sure to find something special happening, whether it be giveaways, discounts, or special galleries. My favorite part of the summer was watching Penn Corridor come alive with new energy for every event. A certain buzz always permeated the air whenever the L.O.V.E. team (West Reading merchants) came together to do something special for visitors.

What began as a simple internship opportunity became a way for me to become engaged with my hometown community. Getting involved in the Avenues scene helped transform the way I saw the community. I learned from the shopkeepers, and the shoppers and gourmands. I discovered what store owners looked for when buying products to sell and what local ingredients went into my favorite menu items. It showed just how much work and care goes into everything you find on the Avenues. West Reading is truly a collaborative neighborhood, with everyone coming together to create the terrific destination community we have today. This is perhaps the most valuable lesson I learned from the Avenues, and the aspect I will miss most about home when I’m away. Nothing beats the feeling of coming home, especially when your home is On the Avenues.

Let’s Paint the Town(Thursday, September 4th)

Presented by West Reading Elm Street, the Let’s Paint the Town event moves an entire city block to another state of mind. Community volunteers help to paint a target row of homes in complementary his-toric three-color schemes. Coinciding with United Way Day of Caring, the dramatic impact of this event reinforces the beautiful impression of the safe, stress-free neighborhood that exists in West Reading. Presented by the West Reading Community Revitalization Foundation, West Reading’s Fall Festival on the Avenue invites hundreds of visitors to this community-wide block party with extraordinary harvest happenings!

Held each year on the third Saturday in September, the 8th annual Fall Fest will take place on Saturday, September 20th from 12 pm–9 pm The borough’s main street, Penn Avenue, is closed to traffic from the 400–700 blocks of West Reading. This pedestrian-friendly, all-ages event is the best way to truly explore all of what the Avenue has to offer, making it pleasantly simple and relatively stress-free. Fall Fest is all within walking distance from plenty of free parking that can be found within the area’s side streets and VF Outlet Village. Hail No! We’re Resilient!

On May 22 no one expected Mother Nature would pummel the business-

es of West Reading with golf ball size hail. The initial evidence of the storm,

with more than six inches of hail in the streets, flooding over the sidewalks

from blocked drains, was just the begin-ning. Roofs, awnings, exterior fixtures and windows were totally destroyed.

Now, less than three months later, building owners and business owners are forging ahead, working around the inconveniences of repairing and replac-

ing the damaged and torn evidence from the impact while they continue to

do business. It’s a joint effort with some building owners working together on

repairs that affected shared properties.

No one ever plans for something as catastrophic as the hail storm and it hasn’t been without its battles and struggles for some business owners. In the end, it’s all about keeping our doors open and serving our clients.

often stated, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and we invite you to explore, enjoy and engage in our community art to find your interpretations of beauty.

Discover the outstanding public art collection at the Reading Public Museum. This world-class collection is spread throughout the Museum’s beautiful 25-acre Arboretum which includes 16 outstanding sculptures scattered throughout the grounds. This display includes loaned art, donated art and Museum purchased art. It’s designed to give the public a chance to learn about art for

free, while encouraging visitors to stretch their legs and enjoy the beautiful outdoors.

The display includes art for everyone, from fine contemporary art to modern pieces, created by names like Harry Bertoia and George Papashvily, to Reuben Nakian and Charles Cropper Parks. The Museum has created a map of of the grounds where each sculp-ture in the Arboretum can be found. Visit the Museum website, ReadingPublicMuseum.org, to learn more.

New lighting has recently been added to the grounds the length of the North Path, from the corner of Museum Road and Parkside Drive North, continuing westward to Trudy’s Garden, to provide a safer environment for you to enjoy an early morning visit to many of the sculptures, or to take an evening stroll through the park and still be able to see the art. Reading Public Museum Director and CEO John Graydon Smith commented, “The lighting project was designed to help make the Arboretum (and neighboring commu-nities) a safer and more enjoyable place in the evenings. It allows us to continue to grow our outdoor sculpture collection throughout the Arboretum, and will increase the sense that the Arboretum is an extension of the museum—not just a park.” The Arboretum continues to be a breathtaking backdrop for pictures, the perfect place to relax, and an excellent environment to learn about art... all for free!

This exhibition documents the legendary life of America’s favorite sex symbol in styles rang-ing from fashion photography to Pop Art.Composed of 115 works by more than 50

artists, Marilyn: Celebrating an American Icon highlights the many sides of this 1950s

glamour goddess and immortal legend through shots of well-loved movie scenes

and familiar publicity photos, biographical glimpses into Monroe’s private moments, and

various artistic interpretations of the starlet.

Call to Duty: World War PostersSeptember 13, 2014 – January 4, 2015Second Floor Galleries

This exhibition, highlighting more than 70 original World War I and World War II posters,

many of which were donated by Captain Roswell C. Williams, Jr., and Raymond Schock, drawn from The

Museum’s own permanent collection (many on display here for the first time), helps to tell the story of the massive human efforts put forth during these twentieth-century global conflicts. Artists such as J. C. Leyendecker, James Montgomery Flagg, Howard Chandler Christy, Edward Penfield, Francis Luis Mora, Jessie Wilcox Smith, and Norman Rockwell, among others, are included in this exhibition.

Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master RaceSeptember 13, 2014 – January 4, 2015 – Second Floor Galleries

This exhibition examines how the Nazi leadership, in collaboration with individuals in professions traditionally charged with healing and the public good, used science to help legitimize persecution, murder, and, ultimately, genocide. It explores the Holocaust’s roots in then-contemporary scientific and pseudo-scientific thought. At the same time, it touches on complex ethical issues we face today, such as how societies acquire and use scientific knowledge and how they balance the rights of the individual with the needs of the larger community.

Public art is important to a community. To compete in the marketplace, neighborhoods need to be unique and distinctive places to live. Visually-interesting details such as murals, mo-

saics, and sculpture can provide competitive advantages unmatched by suburbs. We like our public art to be serendipitously discovered as residents and visitors wander around in West Reading. Public art adds vitality and liveliness to our community. It also breaks up the monotony of the monochromatic urban landscape. Public art humanizes the built environment and invigorates public spaces. And best of all, public art is freely accessible.

Public art encourages creativity and engages residents in a civic dialogue about community values. We intimately involve the public

in the majority of our projects. They are involved in choosing among competing designs and actually working on creating the art piece. The visual art we commission encourages individual artistic development, experimentation, and dialogue between artists and the public. It also provides education and related activities for youth, adults, intergenerational groups, and schools.

Additionally, over the years we have worked with local artists and schools to complete a number of murals and mosaics in areas previously targeted by graffiti vandals that are now graffiti free. Once, as I was showing a group of visitors several murals in an

alley, a group of tough-looking kids started down the street. As they passed us we heard one of the young toughs pointing at different murals and telling his friends with pride his part in their creation.

West Reading gets a lot of value out of public art—cultural, social, and economic value. It provides an intersection between past, present and future, between disciplines, and be-tween ideas. Public art is a distinguishing part of our public history. Many of our murals and mosaics have West Reading incorporated as a theme. Additionally, we incorporate education and culture into our public art by mimicking styles of famous artists and our interpretation of their best known works.

Let’s Paint the Town

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

Let’s Paint the Town corresponds with the United Way’s Day of Caring, when

community volunteers paint an entire city block in bold, bright color schemes during

this one-day event that is at no-charge to homeowners within the target area. In

addition to improving the neighborhood’s curb appeal, this beauty reinforces the idea

that ours is a safe neighborhood where people care. This year’s Let’s Paint the Town

will be held on September 4th on the 300 block of Chestnut in West Reading.

Often I’m asked how we came up with the idea for our Let’s Paint the Town event and how such beautiful color combinations are

chosen. Target areas include homes that were innocuous and bland with red painted

brick and grey or white trim. Each year since the 2001 inauguration event, Jessica L. Nelis, an Interior Designer with Watkins Architects, volunteers time matching color

combinations with bright selections for brick, trim and the accent color for each home.

Well-maintained home facades help to build the futures of our neighborhoods. Let’s Paint the Town contributes to our community’s abil-

ity to attract new businesses and homeowners looking for a nice place to live, work and play in Berks County. West Reading has a lot going for it—but not without acts of strong communi-ty vigilance that support vibrant communities

from slipping toward blight and crime.

Donner Unger is best known for her abstract collage and mixed-media works, but it is impossible to pin this vi-brant artist down to one approach or one formula. She

calls herself a constant learner, always attracted by the adventure of new ways of working on canvas, paper, or board. “I love it all. It’s how I am,” she says. “New and different things excite me and new worlds open up.”

Donna started painting late in life, beginning with watercolor studies twelve years ago. After five years, she began to experiment with other media and has never stopped experimenting. Every year since she has tried a new medium: to stay alive, increase awareness

and add meaning. Art is a celebration, Donna

says. There is a spiritual side in the supportive encouraging fellowship with others as well as filling with joy within. She saves everything she has ever painted; old paintings began to get repurposed and collaged into fresh new creations. Her images grow as she works on them; they gain a life of their own not dependent on pre-liminary sketches. Abstract art is very free.

Currently, Donna is explor-ing the use of wax in making encaustic and cold wax paint-

ings. While the melting of wax for encaustics is an ancient art form, cold wax is a new medium. Donna applies 6–7 translucent layers of cold wax mixed with oil pigment, simultaneously building up, scraping and scratching, imprinting or adding collage elements to create works of subtle colors and shapes. These new truly 21st- century works will be on display at Art Plus Gallery in September and October.
