1 West Kent News On-Line ~ Issue 1 ~ June 2012 At the Provincial Grand Lodge meeting in May, the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Jonathan Winpenny made the following announcement: “The West Kent News has been printed and posted to every member twice a year. I have become increasingly concerned at the cost which is now around £6,000 for each edition and is a major expense for the Province. You are all aware that postage costs are to rise and the Executive have come to the conclusion that the time has come to go over to a solely electronic version. This will now be produced four times a year and will be available to all members for whom we have email addresses. It will of course be possible to have special editions to mark particular events and the increased frequency of production will ensure much more up to date news. It is essential that the Provincial office has as complete a list of email addresses as possible. It would be helpful if during the summer all Lodge Secretaries make every effort to ensure that the Provincial records are full and complete. I appreciate that there are a few members who will be unable to receive the electronic version. This will be a good opportunity for the Lodge Almoner to take responsibility for insuring that those Brethren receive a hard copy and where possible perhaps it could be delivered by hand thus ensuring a visit to those who in the main are at the older end of our age range. The electronic version will remain on the Provincial web site so you will be able to refer back to a particular copy easily and will no longer find that you have thrown away an edition you wanted to keep. I expect many will miss the old hard copy but the advantage of a properly archived electronic version will be immense and the cost saving means that this year the Provincial dues will rise by just £1. This is the first increase for a couple of years and you can work out what it would have been but for this decision.” The Province was honoured on 13 th March when The Grand Secretary of UGLE, W Bro Nigel Brown visited the Dartford Masonic Centre to speak at the TWF seminar on “Ambassadors for Freemasonry”. For those who missed this rare opportunity, Deputy PGM Chris Roberts has provided a report which can be seen on see on Page 3, together with further pictures of the event. The Provincial Quiz held at Bromley on 29th March again proved popular, with 40 teams entered, the largest entry for several years and included some Lodges taking part for the first time. This year was the 18th year of the Quiz, organised and run by Stephen Hall, Derek & Joan Pearce, Phil May, Max Woodward and John Cutts, members of the West Kent Lodge of Charity friends and family. Quizmaster Stephen Hall set some difficult questions in one round but overall those taking part enjoyed the test of the “little grey cells”! I am pleased to report that the standard of answers was very high and eventually it proved a very close result. John Roan School Lodge and Wells “B” teams tied for first place with West Kent Wheel of Friendship Lodge coming third but only three points behind the joint winners. RW Bro Jonathan Winpenny was pleased to present the shield to the winning teams who will share the trophy for the coming year. The raffle raised the magnificent sum of £772 and together with the entry fees meant that £1,500 was raised for the 2015 Festival. The John Roan School Lodge and Wells “B” received a joint first prize of £600 and West Kent Wheel of Friendship received £300. All three immediately and generously donated their winnings to the 2015 Festival. We will be back again next year but say farewell to Derek and Joan Pearce who, having organised the quiz for many years, have decided to step down. From all the organising team, “thanks Derek and Joan”, a sentiment which I’m sure will be echoed by the many teams who have taken part over the years. Stephen Hall

The Spring meeting of the Mess was held on 28th March 2012, with some 280 members present. Following the meal, the Mess was entertained by the Provincial Choir, giving their debut recital in front of a live audience. The performance was excellent, and was well received by the Mess Brethren.

W Bro Chris Roberts, APGM (then), proposed the toast to the President, who in turn thanked W Bro Chris for his kind words, and also thanked W Bro Danny Madley, WM of Anderida Lodge No 8593 for the carnation presented to him earlier in the evening. W Bro Ted Smith was elected Secretary and W Bro Peter Sawyer Treasurer of the Mess. The main business of the meeting was a talk entitled “Freemasonry Cares”, given by Laura Chapman, Chief Executive of the Freemasons’ Grand Charity. Laura explained the benefits of the scheme and urged members to discuss these with their families. A fuller report of the talk is given on Page 10. The next meeting of the Mess is a luncheon at Oakley House, on Tuesday 23rd October, at 13:00.

How do I get something published in WKN? If you’ve got something you want to publish in WK News On-Line, then simply email the story and photos to the Provincial Information Officer: [email protected]

Naturally, normal editorial rules apply, so do make sure your article is newsworthy and that you have good quality photographs to go with it! Lost & Found I have been contacted via our website* by a non-Mason who has found what appears to be a Masonic ring. It has a square and compasses on one side, and what looks to be a ‘dial’ that says “West Kent” on the other. There is also an inscription which appears to read "M. R. A. to D. A., 6-3-74".The ring was found by someone who was scuba diving in the Caribbean, so its owner probably thought it was gone forever. If you think the ring might be yours, please contact me at the email address given above. * Yet one more use for our website; don’t forget to visit it regularly, as it is updated constantly: www.freemasons-westkent.org.uk

Nigel Brown, the Grand Secretary, kindly agreed to speak on the subject of ‘Ambassadors for Freemasonry’ at the Way Forward, held at Dartford Masonic Hall on 13th March 2012. It was attended by over 100 Brethren.

United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) had just launched a new initiative with the publication of its first ever independent report "The Future of Freemasonry" which was prepared by the Social Issues Research Centre. The Grand Secretary has been promoting this initiative which involved speaking on a number of radio stations including LBC and Radio Kent. The main aims of the initiative are to demonstrate that Freemasonry is open and transparent, to regain trust with the general public and to dispel some of the myths that have built up over the years. He began his talk by posing the important question: - How do you respond when Masonry is being discussed openly at a dinner party, or in the local pub? Do you join in the conversation without revealing your membership or do you let them know you are a Mason? If you do decide to let them know you are a Mason, are you comfortable that you can confidently answer the questions that may be aimed at you? The Grand Secretary reminded us that Masonry has successfully been in existence for almost 300 years and there are no changes planned to our principles. However, under the recent direction of UGLE there has been a shift in attitude in our approach to transparency. It is now firmly understood that remaining silent over many years has encouraged the emergence of a negative image. Freemasonry therefore is now taking on a much more

progressive approach towards publicity. In recent years there have been a number of legal challenges by UGLE towards organisations who required their employees to declare their Masonic memberships. It was found unacceptable for Masons to be treated differently. This put up a marker that we are no longer accepting negative publicity or unlawful discrimination - and are now standing up for what we believe in. The Grand Secretary explained how he wanted his initiative ‘Ambassadors for Freemasonry’ to move us on to a new level whereby we could all become proactive in openly talking about Masonry and what it meant to us. However, he advised against the use of too much Masonic jargon - which could result in a loss of interest at the dining table! Returning to his original question of - responding about Masonry in a social gathering, he suggested we might first look at the positive contribution Masonry makes to the various charities. He stressed that Freemasonry did not exist purely as a charitable organisation; however, but we should be proud of our undoubted success. He went on to talk about the Ritual, saying that apart from the signs, tokens and words which we have vowed not to reveal, almost any aspect of the Craft could be discussed without fear of breaking the oaths and obligations taken. His overall message was to place emphasis on the personal benefits of Masonry such as the

opportunity it provided to make lifelong friends, to extend ones social circle - as well as the opportunity it provided for us to put something back into the community He reiterated the importance of mentoring and how the mentor needs to be able to explain the meaning of everything we do - in plain language. At this point he informed us that

leaflet is being produced by UGLE which has been designed to be handed out to non Masons. One question from the floor referred to that “felt” experience of being a member of a Lodge. The Grand Secretary agreed that this was a key element of Masonry which we would all do well to communicate as appropriate in our day to day interaction with others. In summary, I found the Grand Secretary’s address was most personable, both during his talk and afterwards, when he stayed around for over an hour to discuss and answer questions from Brethren. There was an overwhelmingly positive response from those who attended the evening and our sincere thanks must go to the Grand Secretary for making time in his busy schedule to visit our Province. The Questions and Answers begin! Nigel Brown receiving a token of thanks from the PGM

Some of the readers of WKN will perhaps r e m e m b e r t h e U G L E - i n s p i r e d “Freemasonry in the Community” initiative from 2001. You will certainly see the phrase in various parts of this newsletter. The original initiative was intended to make local media take more of an interest in Freemasonry and the positive things it did in the community, rather than only publish the occasional “bad news” stories which arose. I am not advocating a return to the 2001

initiative, but simply following the example of a number of other Provinces in using the phrase as a “banner” for all the work done at Lodge and Provincial level for the communities in which we reside. The media team will eventually attempt to establish relationships with the media in West Kent, but our initial priority is internal communications, including West Kent News! W Bro Tom Anderson, Worshipful Master of Cassii Lodge 9088, chose “Guide Dogs for the Blind” as his charity last year. Seeing the pictures above and below, who could resist these little darlings? Certainly Tom and his Lodge members couldn’t; they sponsored four in all.

The puppies will be trained as guide dogs and the Lodge is looking forward to receiving regular “pupdates” on their progress! {Editorial note: four puppies might seem a bit “over the top”, but I couldn’t choose the cutest or leave one out; could you?}

Members of Westwood Lodge 8046 visited the Bexley Tinnitus Support Group, where W Bro Mike Denman presented a cheque for £200 to Ken Hollingsworth, Chairman of the Group. W Bro Mike explained that he had discovered 25 years ago that he had tinnitus, how it had affected him to this day, and how thankful he was for the help and support he had received from the Group. The majority of the Group have hearing aids and unfortunately, the hearing loop in the building where they meet had somehow been removed during a recent redecoration. The

donation will go towards a much-needed replacement.

The charitably-minded Masons of Mandalay Lodge 9383 and their friends dug deep into their pockets and put their money on a horse. Now seven-year-old grey Woody Mandalay is a sure bet to be a winner with hundreds of disabled children and grown-ups. Mandalay’s horse is already settling happily into his stable at the Diamond Centre for Disabled Riders – a member of the Riding for the Disabled Association – at Carshalton, Surrey. Soon there will be a plaque over Woody’s door, naming the kind-hearted people from Bromley, who bought him. The sturdy grey, whose placid temperament is ideal for disabled riders, is set to bring them hours of joy and a feeling of independence. And this is all thanks to the Mandalay Lodge, Chapter and Club, who raised the money for him. W Bro Jeff Baylie, Mandalay Lodge’s Almoner, explained: “We have already bought the horse for £3,000. Now we are aiming to top that up to £5,000 by the end of the year to buy such things as saddles and tack. “This is a wonderful cause, as the Diamond Centre does unbelievably good work. It helps 300 handicapped riders a week. It has been a superb effort by the Mandalay family.”

Jeff went on: “Woody is our second recent big charitable effort. We have already raised £10,600, which has more than paid for an inshore lifeboat. The boat itself cost £9,500, and we are using the rest of the money for extras. We will match this amount by donating to the Masonic Samaritan Fund 2015 Festival.”

A spokesman for the Diamond Centre said: “We provide unique facilities to benefit disabled children and adults by having regular contact with horses. Riders are aged between five and 65 years. They have a range of disabilities, including spina bifida, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, Down’s syndrome, autism and learning disabilities.” One parent explained: “His achievements while riding at Diamond helped him to grow from a nervous, anxious little boy into one who was confident and relaxed.” Another added: “Our son absolutely loves riding at The Diamond, and seemed to have an affinity and confidence with the horses from the first day.” A rider declared: “Horses open up independence and give me freedom.”

At the first Craft Fair held at the Dartford Masonic Centre in the spring of 2011, proceeds were donated to the TLC Teddy Bear Appeal and the Masonic Trout and Salmon Fishing Charity. The Mayor of Dartford was present and in

recognition of his support, the Province made a donation of £3,000 to the Mayor’s charity, for the purchase a vapotherm machine for the Little Buds Children’s ward at the Darenth Valley Hospital. The Mayor was so appreciative of our generosity, that at the autumn Craft Fair in September, he presented the PGM with a shield bearing the Council’s crest, which is now proudly on display at the DMC.

The proceeds from the autumn fair were divided between two local Scout Groups, who had also helped out at the fair. Members of the Scout Groups were invited to attend the December meeting of Universal Lodge, and having been welcomed into the temple after the Lodge had been closed, the presentations of £300 to each of the groups were made by the PGM. The PGM then announced that under matched funding, he had two further cheques for £300, for each of the Scout Groups, which he handed over, much to the delight of the Scouts and all those assembled.

The members of the Scout Groups were then invited to take part in the procession as it exited the temple, completing what was for all present a very enjoyable meeting. The community theme continued at this year’s spring Craft Fair, again supported by the Mayor (with the Borough’s fire engine!) and the local Scout Groups, all of which will enable further donations of £425 to be presented to each of the Scout Groups. These events have now become firmly embedded in the DMC calendar, and preparations are already well underway for the next Craft Fair on 9th September 2012. The Lodge arranged a Clay Pigeon Shoot at JJ’s Clay Shooting Club in Darenth Woods on Saturday 25th February in a id of the i r recruitment drive. 22 shooters attended and a great time was had by all. Of the 22 t h e r e w e r e s i x Freemasons, four Ladies and 12 non-Masons of which the Lodge hope to have recruited three for Initiation. Everyone was very well looked after by W Bro Dave Hucker and his colleagues at the club who made sure that everyone was kept safe and learnt how to shoot a 12-bore shotgun proficiently.

The Lodge will be repeating this event in the summer as so many competitors wanted a re-match. The photo (above) shows the happy shooters after the prize

giving ceremony, illustrating that the event was open to youngsters as well as the “more mature” competitors. Bob Norris

82 year old Bro Alf Perrin received his 50-year certificate from W Bro Doug Hughes, APGM at the meeting of Gavelkind Lodge 4266 on 18th February 2012.

Although he now lives in Doncaster, 92 year old

Bro George Ferencz was presented with a 55-year certificate, and a letter of congratulations from West Kent Volunteer Lodge 2041, during a visit to his home by W Bro Tony Brailsford, a Past APGM, and W Bro Malcolm Boyle, Provincial Grand Almoner, both of the Province of Yorkshire, West Riding. Tony, pictured above with George, tells us that George was delighted to receive his certificate and that George entertained Malcolm and himself with tales about his time in West Kent Volunteer Lodge, and the history of the Lodge including its military background.

On 28th March 2012, exactly 50 years to the day of his Initiation, W Bro Fred Griffiths received his Citation from W Bro Gordon Davie, PSGD, PAPGM, Holder of the Invicta Award. Fred left school aged 13, started worked as a poultry hand, followed by an apprenticeship at an armaments factory. Called up in 1945, he joined the Royal West Kent Regiment at Maidstone, then joined the Military Police as a driver (having lied about his driving capabilities). In 1948 he joined the Metropolitan Police, serving at Woolwich, and later the Traffic Division, serving in Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley. In 1973 he retired from the Police, became a Publican and “emigrated” to Essex, then tried his hand at being a Hotelier in Yeovil. He retired to Bexley in 1992. On 28th March 1962, Fred was initiated into Heart of Oak Lodge 6416, and became WM in 1974. He became WM of West Kent Lodge of Charity in 1999 at the age of 85! His son tells us that Fred is an excellent father and Mason, and a damned nice bloke!

John is one of the best-known faces in the Province, which is hardly surprising since he has served the Province well, as Provincial Grand Chaplain from 2003 to 2010 and as 3rd Provincial Grand Principal from 2001 to 2007. It was therefore no surprise that the PGM himself was there to present a 50-year citation to John at a recent meeting of Camden Place Lodge 3042. John kindly provided the picture below which shows him supported by his twin sons W Bro Hugh and W Bro Alan.

Rather than listing John’s numerous Lodges and Chapters, and the Offices he has held in them, WKN asked him for his thoughts on his 50 years in Freemasonry: Welcome changes over the fifty years have been the greater openness and the responses from Grand Lodge to attacks often unfounded instead of the previous silence. I still feel that retention of membership would be enhanced if masons were more aware of the meaning behind the ritual than the mere regurgitation of words. How many Wardens know that the order of the Golden Fleece is an order of Knighthood brought into being by Philip, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430 at Bruges to commemorate his wedding to Isabella of Portugal. How many masons know what the perfect points of entry are? What exactly is going on in the third degree opening when the Junior Warden says he comes from the East when he is standing in the South and the Senior Warden he is leaving the East to go to the West when he is already in the West?

I commend the regular study of the volume of the Sacred Law and the Lectures to make a daily advancement in Masonic knowledge. Masonry is far more than ritual; it is a peculiar system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols which makes it so interesting when we research its meaning and message. When one considers and realises why certain things are done the ceremonies become so much more interesting and instead of falling asleep at the same old ritual one can await the next instalment with interest.

On Friday 1st June 2012, the Assistant Provincial Grand Master W Bro Mark Estaugh kindly attended the LOI of the Castlewood Lodge 8179 at Dartford, in order to present W Bro Ted Harris with his 50-year citation certificate and pin. Unfortunately W Bro Ted had been unable to attend the Castlewood Lodge Meeting on 18th May due to ill health, when his certificate was due to be presented. Lodge members were all relieved and pleased that Ted had recovered enough a fortnight later and was able to receive his award after all. Ted became a freemason in 1962 and is the last surviving founder of the Castlewood Lodge consecrated in 1967. David Stuttard Editor’s Note: To improve the chances of your article and pictures appearing in WK News, please let me have them as soon as possible after the event, so that layouts can be planned in good time!

Laura Chapman, CEO of the Freemasons’ Grand Charity, was the guest of honour at the Provincial Mess held on 28th March at Bromley. Laura took the opportunity, on behalf the four central Masonic Charities, to launch the Freemasonry Cares initiative in the Province. Following a trial in three Provinces, it has been launched on a staggered basis into all Provinces in UGLE. Freemasonry Cares was developed to give a greater awareness of the charitable assistance available to eligible Masons and their dependants and to make it easier to access that support whenever it is needed. Over many years, each of the Charities has undertaken its own activities to raise awareness. Each produced leaflets, hosted events, distributed posters, gave presentations and handled its own public relations. Laura pointed out that despite this hard work, it was apparent that there was still a need to do more, or at least to do it differently. Formal feedback repeatedly showed that Masons and their wives were still unaware of what help was available. Freemasonry Cares has three critical elements: it supports, not replaces the Lodge Almoner; it is Province specific, so that our current communication channels continue unchanged; and it offers an easy way to contact the Charities.

Applicants need answer just two questions. First, do you have a Masonic connection? Second, do you have a real financial, healthcare or family need? The Lodge Almoner, via the Provincial Grand Almoner, is usually the conduit through which applications are sent. However if the person, be it a Brother or dependant, is unwilling to speak to the Lodge Almoner, Freemasonry Cares provides an alternative route. A central Freephone number (0800 035 60 90), email address ([email protected]) and website (www.freemasonrycares.org) have been set up, operated by a dedicated team from the central Masonic Charities who will provide information on the services available and how to apply. Laura went on to tell the Mess that the aim of Freemasonry Cares is to target four groups: Brethren that do not regularly attend Lodge meetings; resigned and inactive members, particularly those who may have resigned due to a serious need and those that do not attend due to age or infirmity; wives partners and families of members, who may not be aware of the Charities but who tend to take responsibility for the health and welfare of the family; and widows, who may have lost the level of contact they previously enjoyed. Although Freemasonry Cares cannot overcome the profound lack of awareness of Masonic help available overnight, there have been clear signs it has already reached people who have benefitted. During her presentation, Laura gave several examples of how this excellent scheme has helped Brethren and their dependants. Brochures are available at all Masonic centres within the Province and Lodge Almoners may

continued from Page 10 wish to ensure that all Lodge widows are made aware of the launch and how they may benefit from it. There is also a DVD which will be available and can be shown to widows and Brethren. Laura finished her address by wishing us all success with the introduction of Freemasonry Cares in the Province and she pledged the team’s support in the quest for the solution to financial, healthcare and family needs wherever they exist in the Province. For more information or if you would like a presentation at a future meeting, contact the Provincial Grand Almoner or your Group Almoner. At an Almoners and Charity Stewards Committees’ meeting last year, the post lunch was taken up with a presentation on “Lasting Power of Attorney”. The topic of Lasting Power of Attorney is one in which we should all take an interest as it could affect all of us and our loved ones. What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? It enables you to choose someone such as a family member of friend (an Attorney) now, that you trust to make decisions on your behalf about such things as your financial affairs, your

health, your property or your welfare. It will make life easier and less stressful in the future. It can be drawn up at any time that you have the mental capacity to do so and it becomes valid when it is registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. Mental capacity can be lost without prior warning due to you suffering a serious illness, a stroke or an accident. It can also be gradually lost through degenerative conditions such as dementia. It is therefore critical that a Lasting Power of Attorney is in place so that control of your affairs can be handled by your nominated attorney seamlessly. What happens to those who do not have Lasting Power of Attorney in place when a tragedy strikes affecting their mental capacity? The Court of Protection is legally obliged to step in and act in cases where one does not exist. For those loved ones on the periphery, there can be severe emotional and financial problems. For instance joint bank accounts can be frozen, as the Court of Protection has an obligation to protect their incapacitated client’s assets and any actions taken by it, including things as basic as paying standing orders or direct debits, will incur charges. To regain control of the incapacitated person’s affairs, relatives or loved ones must apply to the courts and the Office of the Public Guardian. The presiding judge can decide whether a family member or associate is fit to become a “deputy” able to act for the incapacitated person. If the judge rules that a family member is not suitable, the court will appoint a local authority or perhaps a solicitor to act. In these cases the Office of the Public Guardian will charge an annual fee to supervise the activities of the deputy, be it a family member or a nominated professional. Additionally there would be professional fees involved in invoking the action Only if Power of Attorney is established before mental incapacity strikes will loved ones be able to avoid applying to the court and Office of Public Guardian for the right to control their assets. The case for having the Lasting Power of Attorney of a loved one, as well as giving control over your own affairs to your loved one, is obvious and relatively easy to obtain. Once it is in place it will reduce the cost of handling the affairs and make it considerably more economic to do so. More information can be found online at direct.gov.uk or through a solicitor.

The Provincial Choir (shown above performing at the POM Meeting) are holding two workshops in July at Sidcup Masonic Hall. This will be an opportunity for potential new members to experience, first hand, being part of a choir. Each workshop will culminate in a mini-performance of songs covered. The music for the workshop will be chosen for its wide appeal. Please note that friends and family are also invited to join in the workshops. The Choir, now known as the “Indigo Singers”, continues to go from strength to strength. Numbers remain consistent at around 30 with an equal number of men to women. The Choir made its first successful appearance at the Provincial Officers Mess in March when we had many congratulatory remarks from the Mess members. You will probably have noticed that there is something missing from this first issue of West Kent News On-Line - a “Contents” list! This was not the plan, I simply ran out of space and decided that the “content” was more important. I hope that this won’t cause too many problems as in this electronic form, you can quickly skip back and forth anyway to find the parts that interest you most. However, I make no apologies for the lack of captions on photos; please let me know who is who when you send in photos! Mike Wheal

On Wednesday 18th April 2012, the WKMSA held a “seminar” as part of “The Way Forward” programme. The evening was organised by W Bro Peter Smith, a keen all-round sportsman, with the assistance of the [then] recently-appointed Chairman of the WKMSA, W Bro Bob King. For the first time in the history of the Province, all the sporting sections came together in the main hall in Bromley, where each section put on a display. Following a brief introduction, Bob King suggested that everyone present should try out each section, with the individual gaining the most points winning a prize. Various groups formed and tackled the events in turn. At darts, just nine throws were allowed, with Graham Stanford recording the totals. The putting course proved very difficult. Even the masterly strokes of the PGM left him struggling to beat the Provincial Golf Captain, Alan Ward, whose keen eye was on the top six.

Next was chipping into a net, using soft balls laid out by Archie Torrance, Inter Provincial Golf Secretary. This was also very difficult and many balls never touched the target. The bowls section w a s v e r y k e e n l y contested, but despite a few well-chosen tips from Alan Butler, the biased balls got the best of most participants.

Somewhat more energetic was the bowling, and even our own Provincial Cricket Captain, Mark Eyles-Thomas, couldn’t quite find the groove.

The final section, new to the Province, was the polo, headed up by Andrew Essinghigh. Despite much expert guidance from Andrew, many were still caught many out by the side-turned mallet. Much fun was had by all, with the overall winner, after much disqualification by the selection team, was Bro Martyn Howard, who had recently become a Freemason and was delighted with the whole evening’s entertainment.

Bob King encouraged those who attended to sign up and Peter Smith thanked all who attended, the committee members and the PGM for giving up time from his busy schedule to hone his sporting skills. This being the main fund raising event of the year, we were pleased to be blessed with a sunny afternoon which attracted lots of visitors to Chislehurst, for the Spring fair held on Saturday 12th May. The fair was opened by The Provincial Grand Master of the Mark degree in Kent, RW Bro Roger Croucher and his wife Ann, who was presented with a bouquet of flowers.

This event is organised each year by the hard working committee members of the "Association of Friends," the Home Manager Gill, and all the staff at the home. This makes it a very successful way to raise funds for all the residents, and to help improve their quality of life. The Fair raised £3,000 on the day, and with cheques arriving each day from Lodges and Chapters to top up the total, we hope to raise about £9,000.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to the Spring Fair for all their support. If you would like to support our Masonic Home at Chislehurst, you can become a member o f t he "Association of Friends" at Chislehurst, for £10.00 per annum, which could be gift-aided if you pay tax.

Please contact me on 01322 664 823 if you, or your Lodge or Chapter would like to receive an Information Pack to become a member. Companions, Welcome to the new RA layout for WK News, as you will appreciate this new layout will enable everyone to publish information and we welcome your contribution. In future editions I will summarise the events since the last issue and bring you up to date with membership numbers which at 1st June stood at 1,946 members and 2,304 memberships. What is the difference? Well memberships cover companions that are in more than one Chapter. I’m pleased to tell you that the Executive is well-advanced on this year’s Honours appointments and promotions, and we are on programme for the letters to be sent out by the end of July. This year’s meeting will be on Friday 26th October, at Great Queen Street, and I hope to see many of you there. As well as the MEZ procession, we are going to have a contingent of new Exaltees present to meet the Grand Superintendent; if you would like to be in that contingent. please let the Provincial Office know. Incidentally, if your MEZ is unable to attend then your IPZ or any other senior member can deputise. Apart from the RA matters, I am pleased to report on a magnificent attendance at Rochester Cathedral for our Annual Church Service. We do not count the numbers, but we ran out of the Order of Service brochures, and I know that we had 300 printed. The church service is organised by a member of the RA Executive and this year was Brian Saunders’ debut and we are all grateful for the fine job he made of it. Have a good summer. Bob King Deputy Grand Superintendent

It has been suggested that one of the reasons Companions may not wish to progress in their RA Chapter is that it is more difficult to learn the ritual and procedures because most

Chapters do not have a regular “Chapter of Improvement”. The 3rd Provincial Grand Principal, E Comp Brian Saunders (a member of Knole Chapter 1414) wrote to all Sevenoaks-based Chapters as follows: “The fact that Chapters have fewer meetings than Lodges, and often no Chapters of Improvement, means that some Companions find it difficult develop a connection with our ritual. This is an invitation for all Royal Arch Companions to come along, once a month, and enjoy an opportunity to engage with other Companions and become more familiar with our wonderful ceremonies. We shall accommodate all ritual workings and several DCs have already indicated that they will attend. “ Brian’s initiative was rewarded with a good attendance and at the first meeting and he has given the following report: The first meeting of this new venture was held on Wednesday 25th April at the Sevenoaks Masonic Centre and was attended by five of the six Chapters who meet there; Widmore Chapter already having their own COI. There was a discussion on the need to encourage Companions to enjoy the Royal Arch and to engage with the Royal Arch ritual. Seventeen Companions came along and there was a unanimous agreement that we should proceed with the programme of monthly meetings. The next meeting (October 10th), at the request of a Companion at the first meeting, will include an explanation of the Chapter layout, ornaments and Offices. The full programme of meetings, open to all Companions, is:

Wed 10th October 2012 Wed 14th November 2012 (Dining Room) Wed 5th December 2012 Wed 16th January 2013 Wed 20th February 2013 Wed 20th March 2013 Wed 24th April 2013

All meetings will start at 8:00 p.m.

Companions, yet again your generosity has amazed me. In addition to your fantastic contribution to our 2015 Festival, you have at 1st June raised £17,000.00 for the appeal in aid of the Royal College of Surgeons. We have no intention of setting a target; all we ask is that every RA Mason donates £10.00, gift-aided if possible and as we have 1,946 RA members, you can see that your response has been magnificent. We would like to close this appeal this year in order that we may return our efforts to the 2015 Festival, so one last push would be appreciated. Thank you! Bob King Deputy Grand Superintendent

12th June 2012 is a date that will be etched in the memory of everyone at the meeting of Hereditary Chapter 5731. Not only did they

witness a near-perfect Exaltation ceremony performed by E Comp Bob Ward and his team, to welcome Colin O'Leary into the Royal Arch, they witnessed E Comp Alf Taylor celebrating 50 years of devoted service to the Province in general and this Chapter in particular. As the ME GSupt said in his address: wherever this Province holds a function, we know that Alf will be there! The photograph will tell you the esteem in which he is held. The attendance register looked very much like a meeting of the Provincial Chapter Executive. Guests included the ME GSupt, the Deputy GSupt, two Past Deputies (it would have been three but Derek Bearman is recovering from his recent spell in hospital), the 2nd Prov Grand Principal, two Past 2nd Prov Grand Principals, two Past 3rd Grand Principals, a Past Assistant to the Principals, the current Prov GDC, a Past Prov GDC, and a Past Prov Grand Treasurer. The Craft was also well-represented in the persons of: the DPGM, a Past APGM and a Past DGDC … … not forgetting Alf himself, who is a Past APGM and was Prov GDC in both Craft and Chapter. Need we say more except, of course, well done and carry on Alf.

W Bro Paul Wheeler, Master of Rivermead Lodge 8278 for the year 2010-11, nominated the Burgess Autistic Trust to benefit from his year. The charity works in Bromley and other South London Boroughs to provide support, assistance and advice to families, which have been touched by autistic spectrum disorders. With Paul's year closing in November 2011, the Lodge made final donations to the charity, ensuring that the total contribution for the year came to £1,000. In December 2011, to mark the success of the year's fundraising, some members of the Lodge attended the offices of the trust to present a cheque for £250, which had been raised at the Ladies' Festival a few weeks earlier.

The Lodge members were warmly welcomed by Jerry Hughes, Chief Executive, who can be seen in the centre of the picture receiving the cheque from, on the left, W Bro George Delves, Lodge Treasurer and, on the right, W Bro Steve Rozier, Worshipful Master for 2011-12. Jerry Hughes said: "We are very grateful to Rivermead Lodge. This kind of support enables us to provide services and support to families, which really make a difference". Although not able to be present at the presentation, W Bro Paul Wheeler said: "I would like to thank the members of Rivermead Lodge as well as our guests and visitors, whose support and generosity have enabled us to help such a worthwhile cause". Freemasonry in the Community

As Bob King mentioned in his introduction to the RA section, the Annual Church Service was organised by Brian Saunders, who deserves every praise for the organisation and for arranging such magnificent weather! The Service included readings by the ME Grand Superintendent, Comp Jonathan Winpenny and the Deputy Grand Superintendent, E Comp Bob King. As is the norm, the finale was the singing of the National Anthem, but with a rare twist. In addition to the normal first and fourth verses, there was an additional one written by Canon Neil Thompson, Precentor of Rochester Cathedral, by whose kind permission the words are reproduced below:

Now blest these sixty years By God midst joys and tears In our Queen’s reign; Duty and loyalty Make us one family - Sharing God’s jubilee: The whole world’s gain!

At this year’s Provincial Grand Lodge Meeting on Tuesday 1st May, the Provincial Grand Master was pleased to promote W Bro Chris Roberts to DPGM and to appoint two new APGMs. All three Brethren have kindly provided details of their background:

Chris Roberts is already well-known throughout the Province, having served as APGM since 2010. Chris trained as an Electrical Engineer, has a BSc (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a MSc in Risk Management and Safety Technology. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Member of the Association of Security Consultants and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Safety and Health. He currently runs his own business as a Security and Safety Consultant. Chris was initiated into the Borough of Woolwich Lodge, is a member of the West Kent Provincial Grand Stewards and West Kent Masters Lodges.

He was exalted into Royal Arch - Pattison Chapter and is a member of Cornwallis Chapter of Rose Croix. For the last three years he has represented the Province as a member of the Rulers Forum. More recently Chris has taken an active interest in developing and promoting the Provincial Choir. Outside of Masonry, he is a Freeman of the City of London and a Member of the Blacksmiths Livery Company. Chris has always had a keen interest in music and the bass guitar still has an occasional outing. In order to keep fit, he runs 10km every Sunday morning and plays a little squash. He is also a keen motorcyclist – but nowadays admits to being a fair-weather rider.

Keith was born near Saffron Walden in North West Essex at the very tail end of 1954 and has lived in Eltham since 1975. After 38 years as a career Civil Servant in the Lord Chancellor’s Department (now Ministry of Justice) he took early retirement from being the Deputy Director

He was the Founding Member (Treasurer) of the Metropolitan Grand Stewards’ Chapter 9812 in 2008. He was a Visiting Officer in London Chapter from 2010 to 2012, when he relinquished that appointment on being appointed an APGM. Keith has achieved distinction in Mark and RAM, being appointed to Grand Rank in both, and is a member of Rose Croix (30°) and the Royal Order of Scotland. Keith is Treasurer of the Peace Memorial Window Refurbishment Fund which raises funds to refurbish and maintain the Peace Memorial Window and adjacent windows in Freemasons’ Hall. The window commemorates those Freemasons who gave the supreme sacrifice of their lives in the Great War. He also served on the Executive Committee of

the South East London Masonic Centre from 1998 to 2012 when he stood down on being appointed an APGM, but continues as an unpaid Director of the Limited Company that owns the Centre. Outside of Freemasonry Keith enjoys cooking, DIY, architectural refurbishment/renovation and antiques. He is a keen pleasure fly and course fisherman, but has limited opportunities to pursue this pastime these days. Keith has been married to Heather since 1983 and they have a 17 year old son, Hugh. Both Heather and Hugh fully support Keith in his Masonic activities. As a keen seamstress, time allowing, Heather often makes running repairs to Lodge and Chapter regalia and has made five sets of fur (faux) trimmed Principals robes, two of which are used by Chapters within the Province - Ravensbrook 8936 and Oakley 8958.

Hassocks in Sussex and then to Staplehurst, where Ian grew up and was educated. On leaving school Ian was offered a trainee Accounts post with Tilbury Plant and enrolled on a Business Studies course at Oakwood College. After some four years his career path changed and he joined an insurance broker in Maidstone and four years later took a post with a broker in Snodland. The business was sold in 2008 since when, Ian who has a life-long interest in property development, is now concentrating his efforts. By this time he had married and had two daughters, Joanna and Alice but sadly Ian lost Joanna in a tragic car accident in 2006. Ian is now happily married to Shonagh and lives at Langley, near Maidstone with his daughter Alice and her husband living nearby. Ian, always a keen sportsman, retired from playing rugby at the age of 46 and now concentrates his sporting efforts on the fairways of Hemsted Forest Golf Club in Cranbrook, as well as representing the Provincial Golf Team. Mountsfield 6548 welcomes a Lewis

On Saturday 12th May 2012, the Brethren and guests of Mountsfield Lodge 6548 witnessed a very special ceremony... … the initiation of a Lewis. It was even more special when you cons ider that the candidate's father and uncle are members of the Lodge, and his grandfather is a member of another Lodge in the same Province! 70 members and guests celebrated this memorable event on Saturday, 5th May 2012 at the Sevenoaks Masonic Centre in the presence of the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Jonathan Stuart Winpenny, who presented the Centenary Warrant. The Provincial Grand Registrar read the Warrant to the assembled Brethren and then, in presenting it to the Worshipful Master, W Bro Alan Guyan, the PGM emphasised the point that before a warrant can be presented, Grand Lodge must confirm the lodge had met

continuously for 100 years and no meeting had been missed or abandoned; for bad weather for example. No mean feet when one considers that the lodge met regularly throughout the two world wars of the 20th Century. Following the ceremony Bro Richard Salvidge was honoured to receive his Grand Lodge Certificate from the PGM. W Bro Alan Whiting, our DC and Lodge Archivist, gave an excellent illustrated talk on the history of the Lodge. Alan put in an amazing amount of work to gather all the information and he delivered it a manner that kept everyone awake and all without notes! At the Festive Board, every guest and member was given an illustrated place mat, the history of the Lodge, written by W Bro Alan Whiting, and a commemorative whisky tumbler. After the toast to the Provincial Grand Master, our Worshipful Master presented him with a cheque for £1,000 for the 2015 Festival. The RW Bro Jonathan Winpenny thanked the Brethren for their donation, especially at a time of recession. The PGM went on to thank the Brethren for their gifts and the most happy Festive Board, and concluded that the Lodge was clearly in good hands. Derek Shelbrooke Secretary

As was announced at the Diamond Day Out the Arrow Riding Centre for the Disabled was one of the beneficiaries of the Provincial Benevolent Fund this year. As the picture below shows, the actual cheque for £5,000 was presented at the Riding Centre:

I had the pleasure of presenting a cheque for £1,300, on behalf of the Provincial Charity Committee, to Mrs Kaye Wren, Chairperson of the “Friends of Milestone School”.

I was shown around the school by the Deputy Head Mistress Mrs Bernice Firth and Kaye. I must say I was very impressed with the school, how happy the children were, and the number of staff that is needed to run a school of this type. I then attended a school assembly were the children song some lovely songs followed by a “Thank You to our Friends” song which was very moving. If you ever have time I am sure they will be pleased to show you around. Ian McDermid

Bros David Darby, Lee Lainson and Glyn Lainson, members of Lesney Park Lodge of Erith 3965 (and shown L to R in our picture), took part in the recent London to Brighton Bike Ride.

Apparently there was a “Masonic pub” somewhere along the 54-mile route, but Bro David (who provided the picture) didn’t make it clear whether the team popped in for a “quick half” or simply concentrated on completing the course. The team’s effort raiseed £300 for the British Heart Foundation.

When enterprising West Kent Masons laid on their “Diamond Day Out” family fun day, they made sure it sparkled as brightly as Her Majesty’s Crown Jewels. The 2,000 or so kind-hearted revellers dug deep into their pockets to produce a stunning profit of around £20,000 for charity. Members of the West Kent Lodge of Charity and their army of helpers made sure that Diamond Day families at Hewitt’s Farm, Chelsfield, on Saturday, June 2nd, got their money’s worth ... and much, much more. On sale at more than 50 stalls, was everything from teddy bears, children’s toys and home-made handicrafts to antiques and collectibles. For the hungry, there was a tasty hog roast, genuine Indian samosas and mouth-watering home-baked cakes. And, as the temperature climbed, the beer tent did a roaring trade, too. Drinkers – and other fun-lovers, too – rubbed their eyes in amazement when “The Queen” turned up in a

stately Rolls-Royce, driven by W Bro Fred Halligan. “Her Majesty” – a royal look-alike, a.k.a. drama teacher Amy Benedict – toured the showground. She graciously posed for photographs with fans at £1 a time, which went to charity.

The Province’s biggest-ever social event, officially opened by the PGM’s wife, Mrs Gillian Winpenny, celebrated the Queen’s 60-year Diamond Jubilee. The action-packed Diamond Day also celebrated the London 2012 Olympics and the mid-point in West Kent’s 2015 Festival for the Masonic Samaritan Fund. During the afternoon, families could watch a dazzling display of “Radical Bikes” by talented young BMX riders. There were birds of prey to admire. And a troupe of young dancers, “One Step Ahead”, gave a lively display. Crowds also saw an amazing demonstration of football skills.

Amongst those enjoying the afternoon’s offerings were the Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Bromley, Councillor Michael & Mrs Janet Turner. They went away having enjoyed a “grand tour” of the stalls and many of the arena events. Mrs Turner was particularly interested in the TLC initiative and went away with a TLC pin donated by PIO Mike Wheal.

There was even more success when donated coins laid for a virtual Golden Mile stretched even farther. Provincial Charity Steward Phil May said: “We had decided that any sum more than £10,000 would be considered a bonus. We achieved over £15,000 – much of which was gift-aided.” The PGM, Right Worshipful Bro Jonathan Winpenny, in a welcome to the Diamond Day, said: “This event has been arranged by a small committee, who have worked so hard to bring it all together. “To them, and all those taking part today, manning stalls, looking after the refreshments , putting on the various displays and entertainment, I say a very big `thank you’.” W Bro Phil May declared: “The co-operation and camaraderie here were astonishing. This sort of event had never been done by us before. It was a tremendous effort that turned out to be very worthwhile.” One of the highlights of the afternoon came when the Provincial Grand Master made charity presentations:

£4,400 was presented by the Province, on behalf of the Freemasons’ Grand Charity, to the Kent Air Ambulance Trust;

for 2012 were:

£8,000 to the Marlborough special needs school, Sidcup; £5,000 to the Arrow Riding Centre for the Disabled, Dartford; £5,000 for Harris Hospice Care, Orpington.

There was also a reception for 150 people in the main marquee, where charities that have been supported by Lodges and Chapters in the Province in 2011/12 were able to meet the PGM and members of the Executive, sponsoring Lodge and Chapter members and other recipients of grants or donations.

A good, old-fashioned money-raising raffle was sponsored by William Russell Chapter 1314, Bromley; Friends of Kent Lodge 9485, Welling and Trismegistus Lodge 9020, Dartford. But on West Kent’s great Diamond Day Out, it was agreed by all at Hewitt’s Farm that everyone ended up feeling a winner. Frank Durham With so many people in one place, accidents can happen, which is why paramedic W Bro Dan Spencer was present. Thankfully, Dan had virtually nothing to do until … having completed the dangerous-looking demonstrations by “Radical Bikes”, one of the bikers then tripped over his own shoelace and put out his knee, proving [if proof were needed] that Murphy’s Law is always in operation. “Provincial Grand Photographer” Kelvin Gane and his wife, Linda, were busy all afternoon taking photographs, including those on this and the preceding page. A further selection appears on Pages 25 and 26, and it is hoped to load a gallery of many more onto a website. Look out for an eFlash announcing their arrival on-line!

The 'Diamond Day Out' held on Saturday 2nd June was billed as the largest social event ever to be held in the Province of West Kent. Being blessed with fine weather it certainly proved to be all of that and a whole lot more, a true family fun day with members of the Province, family and friends turning up in their hundreds. It was a brave move by the West Kent Lodge of Charity to commit to organising such a huge event but by selecting an experienced team in Roland Stokes, Fred Halligan and Peter Townsend to manage the event and enlisting the assistance of Geoff Whale, Keith Clarke, Barry Titterrell and Colin Wright to spread the workload everything came together very successfully. My sincere thanks go to the team as well as to the army of helpers who assisted on both Friday and Saturday in erecting tents and setting up the venue and for taking it all down again. To George Buckberry, Fred Estaugh, David Huntley and Ian Gallehawk for managing the 'Golden Mile'. To Keith Catchpole and Westcombe Park Lodge for sponsoring the beer tent. To Mike Read and his team for running the tea tent. To Friends of Kent Lodge, Trismegistus Lodge and William Russell Chapter for sponsoring the raffle. To Norman Playford of Monofire for providing fire fighting equipment. To Oakley House for the loan of marquees, tables and chairs. To Mike Wheal and his charming wife and the members of Crayford Lodge who assisted with the charity reception. To the stallholders. To advertisers in our programme. To those who took part in the arena events and last but by no means least to all who supported the event by attending. The 'Golden Mile' raised £15,595 for the 2015 Festival and over £5,000 was raised by other charities at their individual stalls. Phil May Provincial Grand Charity Steward

West Kent News On-Line ~ Issue 1 ~ June 2012

Since the beginning of the year we have lost for a while, a number of senior Brethren who have, during the past few decades, been at the core of West Kent Masonry. Inevitably, the length of their sojourn among us is governed by forces beyond our comprehension. One thing is sure, their departure leaves an unfilled gap in our lives, our lodges and Chapters. We give heartfelt thanks for all they did for us and for our great fraternity. However, of greater import, we extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones.

Per Ardua ad Astra Among those who have passed along the Great Fly Path, is Bro Eric Woods AE, who filed his last flight plan in February. Eric was well known to many in the Province for many different reasons. There were many strings to his bow. Not only was he a Past Editor of West Kent News, he was the author of three books, two of which related his wartime experiences as a Navigator on a full tour of Operations over the Occupied Europe. In the second book he recalled his long career in Civil Aviation after the war, and the development of long-distance flights to the ‘Far

East’ by Flying Boats, then on to fast jets to the Americas. When his active flying days ended, he joined the Civil Aviation Authority as Examiner of would-be Navigators and Pilots. Eric celebrated his ninetieth birthday last year. He was a fine ambassador of Freemasonry and missed by all who knew him. Bro Ben Nichols Many will miss the smiling face of Bro Ben Nichols at the Provincial Officers’ Mess and other Provincial gatherings to which he found his way since the late eighties. Ben came into Masonry in 1950 being Initiated into Lewis Lodge No 1185, a London Lodge. He made his way into West Kent in 1973 by joining Crayford Lodge where he became Worshipful Master in 1982. A few years later he was appointed Secretary of the Lodge and remained so for the next twelve years. He followed that by becoming the Lodge Almoner for the next eleven years, an Office he filled with great diligence and distinction. He was finally promoted to PPrGrand Registrar in 2004. Bro Ben served in the RAMC during WW II. He started his working life in the City as a Furrier, but transferred his interests and became a supplier of Paints and Wallpapers. A family man, a happy man, with his dogs and garden and ukulele. A lovely man, a staunch Freemason who died in his ninety-fourth year. Editor’s Note: I am very grateful to W Bro Ken Lorberg for carrying out the research and producing the information about our Departed Brethren.

If you a regular user of “eBay”, you could undertake a useful task for the whole Province. A West Lancashire Mason kindly advises me when Founder’s or PM’s jewels for West Kent Lodges are offered. I then advise the Lodge Secretary so that they can bid on the item if they are interested and have the funds. It would be useful to have someone in the Province carry out the monitoring and thus not have to depend on someone outside the Province. If you think you can help, please contact Mike Wheal: [email protected]

Various suggestions have been made for the content of WK News On-Line, and these will be taken into consideration for future issues. One such idea was a “Letters” column, but that came too late for serious consideration for this issue. However, one letter, originally sent to the Provincial Grand Almoner, Roger Friend, was sent to WKN by the author, and it is certainly worthy of publication: Dear Brother, My name is David Darby from the Lesney Park Lodge of Erith 3965 who meet at the Westwood Masonic Centre, Welling. Just to say a massive thank you for helping me through Ray Chamberlain our Almoner. I contacted Grand Lodge who put me in touch with the Masonic Samaritan Fund regarding the funding of a private consultation with an eye specialist at Blackheath Hospital for my 5-year- old daughter who we found to have a form of glaucoma, an eye condition. The NHS waiting time was 19 weeks which was far to long a time to wait. With the private sector we waited 3 days. Great stuff. If it was not for this funding which was for £350, I would not have been able to pay, and the delay could have resulted in significant damage to my daughter’s eye. Since then we have been to Moorefield’s Children’s Hospital and had the good news that the pressure in her eye has reduced and that by using eye-drops we can maintain her vision safely without having further damaged caused. Please if you can pass on this information in my or your words, to say that Freemasons charities do care - I am proof. Yours faithfully and fraternally, Bro David Darby This is a wonderful illustration in our own Province of how we benefit from the central Masonic Charities, and if anyone needed a spur to their efforts to help us meet our 2015 MSF Festival target, surely this is it!

Any letters submitted for future issues of WK New On-Line will be treated on merit, and will of course be subject to “normal editorial rules”, i.e. are not guaranteed to be published and may be edited.

I have been contacted by someone looking for a reliable way to clean regalia, including lambskin aprons, and I’m sure you are all aware of how grubby Officer’s collars can become with constant use. A few years ago, I had some success with a local dry cleaner who was prepared to experiment until he got it right, and I was able to provide a couple of “spare” collars for the experiment. However, that shop has since closed, so I can’t recommend it to anyone! If you have any tried and trusted methods, please let me know and I will publish them for the benefit of all: [email protected]

W Bro Mark Estaugh and his partner Laura presided over a very successful West Kent Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge 8565 Family Lunch at the Spa Hotel in Tunbridge Wells. Over 100 people enjoyed good weather and good food. With Beryl Smith celebrating her birthday with a cake made by her grandchildren and Fred & Iris Pettit enjoying their 62nd wedding anniversary, it was a very happy occasion, which may explain the raffle proceeds - £680 going to the 2015 Festival. However, there were some unwelcome guests, the gremlins who “got at” the menu card printed by the hotel:

There are no prizes for spotting the deliberate mistake! (Apologies for the quality of the scanned image.)
