Audience:

West Island College (WIC) and the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business, are pleased to host a three-day experiential summer camp designed for secondary school students that focuses on entrepreneurial thinking and action.

This is the 4th Business Leadership Camp WIC has offered. This year’s camp is designed for motivated and enthusiastic secondary students who have completed Grade 9 and suggested for students up to the completion of Grade 11.

This camp experience has been designed to empower future entrepreneurs, employees, volunteers, business and community leaders to identify opportunities for innovation, understand customer value, create a real new venture or social enterprise business idea and ultimately how to communicate, or pitch, a new venture idea to a panel of community experts, entrepreneurs and investors.

Over the course of the three days, students will work in teams to develop their own business model for a new venture or social enterprise. Student teams will be mentored and supported by University of Calgary students and alumni throughout the course of the camp.

In the past, WIC has partnered with the Haskayne School of Business to offer the popular Business Leadership Camp. This is our first partnership with the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Haskayne School of Business, and we are excited to offer a camp experience unlike anything else!

The Entrepreneurial Thinking in Action Camp:

With our economy in a constant state of flux and pressures from society and the environment ever changing, we need the next generation to be amazing problem solvers. They need to be agile, versatile and comfortable with learning from their failures. One of the best ways to learn these skills is by becoming an entrepreneur for a few days. This camp draws on the leading edge practices in curriculum and a set of experts that will result in a fun and empowering experience for all the students.

Houston Peschl, MBA

Founding Partner of Creating EudaimoniaInstructor of Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Sustainable Development at the Haskayne School of Busines

As former Director of Operations and Sustainability of DIRTT Environmental Solutions, Houston mentored under serial entrepreneur Mogens Smed. Houston developed a comprehensive social and environmental sustainability program to demonstrate the benefits of innovative operational process improvement, cultural change, and green procurement strategies to create a competitive advantage. During his time at DIRTT, he was also recognized as Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 under 40 in 2013.

Houston led a project to become a Canadian B Corp founding member, resulting in an international network of CSR leaders to draw on best practice in all pillars of sustainability. He is continually involved with B Corp to promote and advance the public policy for Benefit Corporations across North America, including owning the first B Corp Certified Spa in North America, Leela Eco Spa and Yoga Studio in Bridgeland.

Houston is a full time Instructor at Haskayne School of Business and created an “Entrepreneurial Thinking” course that is a required course for all business undergrads. He has also received a grant from Enbridge to create and teach an MBA course at Haskayne called “Sustainable Development” that focuses on strategies and supply chain tools to embed sustainability into an organization to create a Shared Value business model. As well, he has created a course for the executive education department on Impact Assessment and Social Licence to Operate.

Houston is passionate about supporting Alberta’s Agriculture industry and its entrepreneurship community, so he co-founded a social enterprise called, The Collective that provides mentorship to innovative start-ups to become investment ready while using a shared value business model. He has created a nationally recognized impact investing tool called the Calgary Poverty Reduction Fund and currently sits on the Business Constellation group of Calgary business leaders to help eliminate poverty through the Enough for All campaign through the Calgary Poverty Reduction Initiative. To date, Houston has published seven articles for the Globe and Mail on sustainability and entrepreneurship and leadership.

Currently, Houston is also working on exciting projects with Creating Eudaimonia, a leading sustainability consulting firm, with a focus on embedding sustainable strategies and shared value in the Agriculture sector. The work with the Government of Alberta’s Agriculture and Rural Development group has been focused on developing a business diagnostic tool that allows Alberta’s agri-processors to identify the business areas they need support in. The tool is then used to scale their business profitably while embedding sustainability into their business model.

When Houston is not working, he is on his bike training for international ultra-endurance mountain bike races or endurance equestrian races with his two chestnut Arabian mares Cate and Jane.

Haskayne Hunter Centre For Entrepreneurship and Innovation

The Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation was created in February 2013 thanks to a $5 million lead donation from Doug and Diane Hunter and nearly $3 million in additional support from Calgary entrepreneurs Keith Brown, Wayne Henuset, Charlie Locke, and David Robson.

Engineers Without Borders

Engineers Without Borders Canada and their first mission statement was founded in 2000 by CEOs, George Roter and Parker Mitchell on a napkin in a coffee shop. With a dream of an organization that would enable engineers to contribute something other than another bridge or another electrical grid, they started off with biweekly meetings in George’s parents’ living room. By the end of 2000, over 1000 members had joined and a handful of chapters were starting. In January 2001, EWB’s first volunteer left for a four-month internship in India.

With every purchase of Bundles of Hope’s products, our customers who share the same goal as our team will show their dedication to social good.
