Character Education: Self Control
Self-control means having discipline over one’s behavior or actions.
Having self-control is a character trait that is important in everyday life. You can demonstrate self-control by: thinking about how your words and actions can have a positive effect on yourself and others; learning how to
turn a frustrating situation into one that will be positive and productive; understanding that rules and laws are in place so that everyone can be
safe and productive; using the power of your thoughts to control your actions; and, making sure that what you say and do is appropriate for the time and place.
Here are a few books that you can read with your child that illustrate self-control: The Berenstain
Bears' Mad, Mad, Mad Toy Craze by Stan Berenstain; Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes; How
Do Dinosaurs Go to School? by Jane Yolan; The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter; and, Alex and
the Team Jersey by Gilles Tibo.
Quote About Self Control
“To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart.”
― Eleanor Roosevelt
“I’ve learned that it is easier to stay out of trouble, than to get out of trouble.”
— H. Jackson Browne

Black History Month Projects
Class News Early Childhood
During the month of February we celebrate Black
History Month by reading many books and learning
about influential African Americans. We also
celebrated the 100th day of school with many fun
math activities. Valentine’s Day was a big celebration
too for Pre-K. We performed some multicultural songs
and shared treats with our friends and families to show
our love for them. All of this fun was chock full of
learning activities, songs and lessons. The children
continue to work very hard at learning their letters
and sounds as well as other pre-reading skills. Please
remember to read with your child daily and talk
about what you read. Also, if your child is absent, you
need to call (754) 323-7850 to be sure that their
absence is excused. Thank you for all of your support! Kindergarten
We started off the month by celebrating our 100th
day of School. We have learned so much during
these 100 days. In guided reading we are currently
working on learning our sight words from the green
and blue list. We are blending and sounding out CVC
words (Consonant, Vowel, Consonant) and medial
sounds. In Math we are learning how to represent,
count and write numbers 11 to 19. We also are
counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, up to 100. In Science we
are learning about energy and motion. How things
move and using positional words such as: behind,
above, next to, to describe location. February is Black
History Month and we are learning about important
people in history such as Martin Luther King Jr, and
Rosa Parks just to name a few. During our Writing
Workshop we wrote a project about Rosa Parks which
we will hang up on our bulletin board. Lastly, we are
very excited to start the Swimming Program starting
February 27th thru March 10th at the YMCA, which we
will be learning water safety skills. First Grade
It has been a busy month with the 100th day of school
and Valentine’s day. Thank you to all the families that
sent in snacks for our “100” piece snack. Permission
slips have gone home for our upcoming trip to
Flamingo Gardens. The cost of the trip is $9.00, please
send in the exact amount and in
cash...PLEASE! Directions for making an online
payment are on the back of the permission slip. In
reading, we are working on increasing our
independent stamina and learning strategies to figure
our harder words. In your child’s homework packets,
PLEASE encourage him/her to read the passages on
their own then answer the questions. If after they have
tired then you can go back and help him/
her. Students will have to read similar passages on
their own when we take the test in April/May. In math,
we are working on number concepts to 120, greater
than, less than, 10 more, 10 less, one more, one less. Second Grade
Greetings West Hollywood families! Second graders
are working very hard to strengthen their reading and
writing abilities. Teachers are using small group and
individualized instruction to meet the unique needs of
all learners. Second graders are scheduled for an
upcoming field trip on Friday April 7 to the Young at
Art Museum. Please consider allowing your child to
attend this memorable experience. In math students
are currently learning to telling time, counting money,
and measure. Please continue to use the resource
Reflex math to facilitate fluency in mathematics.
Please continue to reinforce positive homework and
reading routines at home, so students will become
independent lifelong learners.
Third Grade
We kicked off the month of February celebrating the
100th day of school! We have been working so hard
in our third grade classrooms and are so proud to be
one hundred days smarter!
In reading, we have concluded our focus of main
idea and key details, and are currently working on
identifying text features. You can assist your child at
home by asking questions about the different text
features as he/she reads. We will start discussing point
of view as well.
In math we have moved into fractions. Even though
we are no longer in the chapters of multiplication and
division please make sure your child continues to work
on memorizing multiplication facts at home. We will
also be reviewing operations, algebraic thinking, and
numbers in base ten to refresh and prep for the FSA.
We have currently wrapped up our lessons in culture,
and we will start learning about landmarks next.
In science, we continue to explore forms of energy.
Next, we will be learning about Earth and stars.
We are so excited for our field trip on February 24th to
Port Everglades where we will go aboard the cruise
ship “Serenade of The Seas.” In order for your child to
attend, please remember to sign and return your
child’s permission slip by February 22nd. Also, please
keep in mind that this is an extended day and your
child will need to be picked up no later than 3:30pm
on that day. Fourth Grade
On February 28, 2017, our fourth grade students will
be taking the FSA Writing Assessment. Teachers are
diligently preparing the students on persuasive and
informative writing. Students have been given Mock
assessments to simulate the writing test. We've
conducted many mini-lessons in the classroom for
writing skills that still need to be strengthened. Overall,
the students have received a number of resources
and instructions to prepare them for the big day.
As part of Black History Month, students worked on a
project where they did some research
on influential African-Americans. Part of their
assignment included researching about their
childhood and noted accomplishments throughout
their lives. Students will be presenting their creative
Black History projects through out the month of
February.
Parents, thank you for your constant support and
helping our students be their best. We ask that you
continue to enrich them at home and provide
support with their homework and most importantly
their math and reading skills. Fifth Grade
We have started the third quarter with a great start.
Our 5th grade students have just recently gone to the
Museum of Discovery and Science and had a blast!!
We saw and learned about plasma, weather,
animals, and more! In Math, we have recently
finished learning how to multiply and divide fractions
and started patterns and graphing. In Science, we
just finished learning about the different organ systems
and we are reviewing how classify the different types
of animals in the two main groups, vertebrates and
invertebrates. In Writing, we recently finished writing
about the Spanish conquistador, Cabeza De Vaca
and the American Revolution in Valley Forge. Lastly, in
Reading, we are learning how to find a theme of a
poem/story and comparing and contrasting different
text structures. Just a reminder, the FSA Writing is
coming up on February 28, 2017, please make sure
your kids are completing their homework assignment
to prepare for the exam. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs.
Vergara for helping us raise money for the End of the
Year 5th grade dance! You are the best!
