From Our Intentional Interim Pastor Steven Covey, former professor of business management and

organizational behavior, states in his book, First Things First, how fixated our

culture is on the clock. “The clock represents our busyness, commitments at

work, appointments, tasks, and schedules. The clock symbolizes how we

spend our lives. The compass on the other hand, represents personal vision,

core values, and principles that shape and guide our lives.” Covey suggests that

we ought to rely more on the compass than the clock, because the compass has

more to do with the direction we intentionally plan to follow on our journey.

The Old Testament book of Jeremiah finds the people of Israel exiled

in Babylon and restless for home. Their growing impatience made them

susceptible to the false hopes and promises propagated by some prophets who

foretold of an early release from captivity. These false promises fixated them

on the clock. Like little children sitting in the back seat of the car on a long

trip, who keep asking over and over again, “Hey, are we there yet?” Caught up

in the clock, they lost sight of the compass. So God sent Jeremiah with the

message, “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for

your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope” (Jeremiah

29:11).

God’s plan for his people was simple. Maybe that’s why they missed

it. The following verses communicate this message, “Then when you call upon

me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you

will find me; If you seek me with all your heart, I will let you find me” (12-14).

In other words, “When praying, listening, and looking for me becomes the

focus of your lives, you will find me,” says the Lord. “I am your future and

your hope.”

Our spiritual journeys rarely unfold in straight lines. We go forward

and backward, left and right. We make progress, and we fall behind.

Sometimes we feel like we are simply standing still. The questions we need to

ask ourselves are not, how far have we come or how long have we been on the

road? Those are considered clock questions. Instead we need to ask compass

questions: am I continually orienting myself toward God or am I allowing the

Holy Spirit to point me in the right direction?

2018 Winter Bible Study

Sunday, February 25th 11:30 am-3:15 pm

Leader: Dr. Danny West

In the first century, Gentile believers were suffering and facing persecution because of their faith in Jesus. Peter wrote a letter to remind them that their

heavenly hope and eternal inheritance outweighed anything faced in this life. He encouraged them to live holy lives motivated by love. The message delivered by

Peter has great relevance for today, as more pressure is being exerted on believers around the world. Our Winter Bible Study will be a source of encouragement to believers facing this increasing pressure, reminding them that they are foreigners

in a distant land and that one day they will gain the privileges of their heavenly citizenship. Dr. Danny West will be our leader. Dr. West is the Executive

Director, Doctor of Ministry Program, School of Divinity and Professor of Preaching and Pastoral Studies at Gardner Webb University. Activities for

children will be provided. The youth will be assisting with the children activities. Lunch will be provided.

On February 14, we will have an Ash Wednesday service in our

sanctuary for all at 6:30 pm. Everyone is invited to attend and

participate. We will begin Lent with a worship service that

compresses the whole season of what we should experience during

the forty days of the observance of Lent. It will be a time of prayer,

reflection, self-examination, and hope.

At the end of the service, you will have a time to participate in

what is called the imposition of ashes. You will have an opportunity

for ashes to be placed on your forehead or hand in the shape of a

cross to help you remember your own mortality, and that we are

entering into a season of reckoning and sorting through our own soul

and discipleship with Jesus. You also have the choice not to have

ashes imposed and sit quietly and pray as others make their way

forward. We hope you will join us for this moving and meaningful

time together as we begin our journey to the cross and Easter.

Notes from Patti Lingafelt, Interim Minister of Music and Worship

Congratulations on learning what may have been a new hymn for you during the month of January—This Is a Day of New Beginnings! By the end of the month, I heard solid singing. I hope you have grown to appreciate the words and their reminder that God indeed makes all things new. February brings Ash Wednesday (Feb. 14) and the start of Lent. We will have an Ash Wednesday Service at 6:30 p.m. in which, if you choose, a cross of ashes will be placed on your forehead, reminding us of our mortality and humanity and the need to confess our sins to God and “repent and believe the Gospel.” Lent, the 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter, excluding Sundays (because Sunday is the day on which Jesus rose from the dead, a celebration day) is a time during which we should prayerfully examine ourselves and our relationship with God and seek to draw closer to Him. This, of course, is in preparation for observing and remembering Jesus’ crucifixion, death, and ultimately resurrection during Holy Week and Easter. The early church used the season of Lent as a time for new converts to prepare for baptism on Easter. On each Sunday in Lent, we will have a brief observance at the start of the service to remind us of the season—similar to lighting of the Advent wreath, we will have a reading and then extinguish a candle to remind us of the coming death of Christ. We will sing a short refrain from the Taizé tradition in France, reminding us of the thief’s words to Jesus on the cross: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Each Sunday, the choir will sing an anthem from a cantata entitled Near the Cross that will remind us of Jesus’ work on the cross. However you choose to observe Lent, may we all be drawn closer to our Lord through the season and be about greater service to Him.

Westwood Baptist Church

“Joining God in His Work” through missional living is the heart of who we are and what we are about at Westwood. Missional living is the ongoing process of ministering to the whole person by sharing the love of Jesus through both word and deed. It is about building relationships and meeting physical, tangible, emotional, and spiritual needs of people in our world in the name of Jesus. Throughout the year, Westwood offers mission education groups for children, youth, women and men. We also partner with a variety of local and national ministries and support them through finances, prayers, volunteers and other tangible resources.

We believe that every believer has been given spiritual gifts and natural talents that are to be shared and used for the growth of God’s kingdom. Westwood’s goal is to equip and encourage individuals to find their God-given passion and call to service and to live out that call by “Joining God in His Work.”
