From the President;

On behalf of the members of the West Coast German Shepherd SC, I extenda heartfelt welcome to all of you.

This event is very special to us here in the WCGSSC because it highlights thetradition of contributing to the sport. It is our way to honour all of those whoencouraged us, taught us, aided us, promoted us and who donated their timeto help us understand the beauty of the sport. They did this simply for thelove of the sport, without reservation and without a price. To that end, we inthe WCGSSC, all donate our valuable time from our work and our families tohost this event annually.

The members of the West Coast club believe strongly in the tradition ofsharing their training with others who are interested, to improve the sport inthe way it is presented and perceived. We believe that sharing our successand knowledge will encourage others and promote a positive perception ofthe training, competing and breeding of working dogs. It is a tradition that wewant to promote and to pass on. We do it to preserve the true heart of thesport.

A special welcome and a heart felt thank you to all of the business partnersthat have stepped up to support the event. Corporate partnerships anddedicated volunteers are key to the success and the future of events such asthis and our support and promotion of their products and businessesensures a strong and continued relationship in the future. We take care ofthose who take care of us.

We sincerely hope you enjoy your time with us here on the west coast ofCanada. We hope you make many new friends and leave us with some greatmemories, new knowledge and an increased enthusiasm, passion andexcitement for the sport.

For the sport

All about Work Week

The event is designed to immerse everyone inthe sport for 5 days. We schedule the mealsand evening social time immediately after theday’s training because we want the social timeafter training to be an opportunity for everyoneto relax together and review the events of theday.

The social side is extremely important and anintegral part of the event. We see this time asthe best opportunity to get to know each other, discuss the events of the day, past experiencesand special times in the sport. It gives everyonea chance to build relationships and establishcontacts for the future and brings theSchutzhund sport world a little closer foreveryone.

Creating a positive perceptionGenerally there is a tremendous love affairwith dogs in our society. That fascinationcovers a multitude of breeds and a variety ofassociated interests. However, we must notforget that there will always be those whodon’t understand or agree with the trainingof dogs, or even in having dogs in thecommunity. Some are even afraid of dogs. Inparticular they are afraid of large breeddogs. It is important that those concerns arerespected and reflected in the actions of dogowners.

The behavior of a dog owner affects thereputation of all dog owners, dog clubs, dogorganizations and the breed they own.

How dogs in general, and the dog sport inparticular, are viewed by friends, family, peers and the public is dependent on howevery individual presents themselves inpublic and while participating in andaround the sport.

Clubs have a responsibility to teach theirmembers and to encourage responsible andrespectful behavior.

The future of the Schutzhund sport in thischanging world is also tied to thecontribution it makes to society and inconveying the message that the sport isbeneficial to the community. That messagemust be loud, clear and consistent.

We all have a vested interest in responsibledog ownership. Dogs and dog owners haveto be educated to be good citizens.

Working dog clubs and their members mustbe a big part of the solution.

Protocol for the sportof Schutzhund. The martial arts have centuries oldtraditions and protocols.

These protocols and traditionspromote self-control, respect, humility and dignity. Like themartial arts, the sport ofSchutzhund has traditions andprotocols for the same purpose.

Proper reporting in and out for thevarious phases, competing in clubuniforms, respecting competitors, volunteers, officials and maintainingdignity in success and failure are allimportant elements of how the sportis presented.

It is not the critic who counts, not the manwho points out how the strong manstumbles or where the doer of deeds couldhave done better. The credit belongs to theman who is actually in the arena, whoseface is marred by sweat and blood, whostrives valiantly, who errs and comes shortagain, because there is no effort withouterror and shortcoming, who does strive todo the deeds, who knows the greatenthusiasm, the great devotions, spendshimself in worthy cause, who at the bestknows in the end the triumph of highachievement; and who at the worst, if hefails, at the least fails while daring greatly,so that his place shall never be with thosecold and timid souls who know neithervictory or defeat.

Clubs & Club grounds

We know that the training of dogs dramaticallyreduces the incident of unprovoked bites (approx.by 90%) and the education of owners and dogs isthe key to preventing such incidents.

Dog Sport clubs and their facilities compliment thewidely available public and private professional dogobedience classes and provide an option for thosewho would like to do more with their dog afterlearning the basics.

Club facilities draw people of a common interesttogether to share information and knowledge at anaffordable price and provide a low cost form offamily and personal recreation with the dogs. Theclubs are social centers for people to gather andenjoy their common interests in a comfortablesetting.

Club facilities also provide alternative venues forhosting training, seminars, competitions, showsand numerous other dog related activities.

Club facilities help to keep dogs owners from usingpublic play grounds and recreational sportscomplexes as their training and exercise areas.

Club facilities are an important element forbuilding a positive learning environment foreverything from basic responsible owning to thecompetitive training of dogs.

The club structure creates a team environmentwhich contributes to the competition aspectbetween the various clubs from differentcommunities.

German Shepherd Schutzhund Club of Canadamember clubs are all registered non-profit societiesand the funds to maintain and improve thefacilities to organize and to host events aregenerated from memberships and fund raisingevents held at the facility.
