Habitat for Humanity is known around the world for building affordable homes. Money to get that job done is raised in many ways, including two thriving retail operations in Ottawa called ReStores. The ReStores accept donations of brand new surplus building materials and some gently used items. Some new items come from developers who have mint-condition construction materials – from mountains of drywall to a single surplus kitchen sink – that were left over following a big construc- tion project. The ReStores then sell those materials are at bargain-basement prices to people starting new projects: small renovators or homeowners spruc- ing up their residence.
