PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT

The year 2019 has rung in many changes and brought many new challenges. Certainly, the appointment of your new board of directors at the last Annual General Meeting on 25th February 2019 marked a turning point in the Club’s operations. Taking into account the recommendations contained in an independent KPMG review and building on the achievements of the previous board, your new directors have been devoted to planning and executing a re-energised vision of the Club’s future. It has not been easy. It is fair to say that the first six months were spent gaining an understanding of the way the Club operates, and your board of directors invested long hours identifying the priorities that needed to be addressed if the Club is to thrive well into the future. You will recall that we held a face-to-face member forum in June, where members were invited to come along and hear from each board member and to ask questions and provide input in a very open and transparent way. Despite many members not attending, valuable feedback was provided on the day, which has formed part of the planning for the future.

As President, I understand that many members have felt unsure about some of the changes that have been made at our Club. In the process of managing these changes, I have taken the attitude that everybody has a valuable opinion and deserves to be heard. You may remember that at the last Annual General Meeting I said I believe in clear, accountable communication and I have stood by this belief over the past twelve months. It has been a pleasure to meet personally with several members who have needed to discuss issues that have been bothering them, and I believe this has had a positive effect on the Club. I encourage all members to provide their feedback in a way that will promote the interests of the Club. If the Club is to move forward as a united, tightly knit unit, then we must continue to communicate our support for each other.

Each and every one of your directors is a professional, highly regarded person of integrity who has brought a specific set of skills to the Club. Each director has made a commitment to bring about change that will have a positive effect. I believe that your board of directors is now fully conversant with the major issues that lie ahead and is poised and ready to place our great Club in the position it deserves in South Australia. I wish to acknowledge the work done thus far by every board member. It has been an honour to be part of that great team.

The results of the Club in 2019, both on-field and off-field, were mixed. Only two wins for the senior men’s team and six for the women’s highlights just how much work needs to be done across many aspects of our football department. From a financial perspective, we saw consolidated income increase by $60,563 (1.4%). However, expenditure rose by $142,379 (3.6%) which resulted in a fall in profit of $81,816 on the previous year. There were several items of expenditure of an unusual nature which are non-recurring. As your board implements its plans during 2020 we expect to see all results improve.

There have been many people who have stood behind your board and provided directors with guidance and counsel to ensure that decisions have been made with full understanding

of the issues involved. In particular, I wish to acknowledge the invaluable advice given so generously by the Club’s Honorary Solicitor Mr John Levy. As a previous director and current Chair of the Club’s Risk and Governance Sub-committee, John has been instrumental in building a framework to strengthen the board and its decision-making processes.

I also acknowledge and thank the members of the Club’s Nominations Committee, comprising of Mr Adrian O’Dea and Mr John Kantilaftas. The committee invested many hours during the year to ensure that the board was provided with the very best recommendations during the selection of a candidate to take over from our Football Director, Mr Graeme Barton, who retires at the Annual General Meeting this February. Graeme is an integral part of the Club. He is a past player, he has served as a director for eleven years, has been a driving force behind the Westonians and the History Group, as well as devoting countless hours to the football activities of the Club. He has served as the Vice President for four years and has been a wonderful ambassador in that capacity. Graeme has been working very closely with his successor, Mr Derek Bonner, to ensure a smooth transition and I wish to thank Graeme for his energy and devotion, which I know will continue for many years to come.

The operations of Westies are managed and overseen by our tireless Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ben Hopkins. Having spent the first year of his tenure in an interim capacity, Ben demonstrated that his passion and dedication to the role of CEO was second to none. It was therefore pleasing to learn that Ben was keen to be appointed as a permanent member of the staff, and it was an honour to be able to offer the position as from November 2019. Ben has worked many long hours implementing changes at the Club and building a strong team around him. He has a clear vision of the Club’s future and works very closely and effectively with the board to ensure that planned strategies are managed professionally and sustainably. It has not taken long for Ben to build a great reputation among his colleagues and peers. He is a true asset to the Club and I personally wish to thank Ben for all he has achieved so far.

When you walk into our Club, chances are that you will be met by any number of people who form part of the backbone of our great organisation. You’ll see staff, volunteers, members, current and past players, officials, supporters, sponsors as well as those who simply have an interest in what we do. Without these people, the Club doesn’t have a reason for being. I wish to acknowledge the important part that each person plays in the life of West Adelaide Football Club. The immeasurable hours devoted by volunteers can never be overstated, just as the efforts of supporters and members of the coterie groups cannot be forgotten. The work performed by the Westonians, the Past Players and Officials and the History Group must be recognised as integral to the success of Westies and I thank them for what they do. I also thank the members of the Wolfpack, who have stood by the Club for many years to ensure that it is protected from the financial challenges of recent times. Additionally, I thank all our sponsors, in particular Adelaide Galvanising Industries for their long- standing support. I welcome and thank

Page 23: WEST ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB INC. & WEST ADELAIDE ...

21

Hisense who have just taken over the oval naming rights from City Mazda, who will continue as sponsors. I trust that each and every one of our sponsors are receiving great benefit from being part of our Club – we will certainly be doing our best to provide value back to them and I ask that all members get behind the businesses that support Westies.

We receive enormous help and support from Mayor Michael Coxon and CEO Terry Buss of the City of West Torrens Council. Both have worked closely with us, recognising that the Club is an integral part of the Western Suburbs and can provide valuable activities for our community. I thank Michael and Terry for their involvement and look forward to enhancing our relationship with the Council during 2020.

Finally, I acknowledge and thank SANFL for their faith and belief in what we are doing at Westies. SANFL CEO, Jake Parkinson, and his staff have provided invaluable guidance and assistance during the year, never denying the Club the opportunity to seek help when required. We know that the Club has a long way to go before it can proudly say that it is sustainably financially independent. But we are on the path to that point, and SANFL are with us every step of the way. Your board is fiercely devoted to working closely with SANFL to ensure the best for our Club. I know that a bright future lies ahead.

CEO REPORT

2019 certainly presented some challenges for West Adelaide, both on and off the field.

Players, staff and volunteers dedicate a large part of their lives to overcoming these challenges and I would like to thank you all for the work you do to improve and assist the club on its journey. Without a team of people working together in pursuit of common goals, the task of getting better each and every year would be significantly more difficult.

I would also like to thank those members who support us through the tough times. It would be very easy to criticise from afar, but so many of our members loyally attend and provide words of encouragement or support at every opportunity and for that we are very grateful.

The implementation of the board structure voted for by members occurred late February 2019 and has brought a strong foundation for the club to build on in future years. President Murray Forbes has brought directors together and quickly formed alignment on a path for the club to move forward. Murray has been open and available to members at every request and has personally met with individual members to discuss the club at every opportunity. He has encouraged members to have their say by conducting an open forum for any member to attend and ask questions or express concerns. Individually and as a collective, the Directors have dedicated a huge number of hours to the West Adelaide Football Club and the improvement of its short, medium and long-term future.

FOOTBALL

Our SANFLW team narrowly missed out on a finals berth in season 2019, finishing only percentage outside of the top four. Strong seasons from Bec Owen and Madison Newman saw them finish third and second respectively in the Best and Fairest, with top honours taken out by Riverland product Abbie Ballard. Led by Captain Lauren Rodato, who also took out the Players’ Player award, the team showed improvement throughout the season and were unlucky not to get a chance in the major round. Both Madison Newman and star forward Chelsea Biddell were further rewarded for their strong seasons with selection in the 2019 AFLW draft. Both will get their chance with Adelaide FC in season 2020 and we wish them well in the next step of their football careers.

Our SANFL team finished the season with two wins, and many missed opportunities. In many, if not all games, we had either led or been in position to take control of the match but short lapses or strong bursts of scoring by our opponents left us behind at the final siren. Logan Hill had an exceptional year and was a deserved winner of the Neil Kerley Medal. Kaine Stevens finished second after another strong year and Elliot Dunkin showed the value of consistency with a third place finish. The elite competition came calling again and three more West Adelaide products were offered the chance to play at the highest level. For Will Snelling it was a return to the AFL system,

just in different colours. After an outstanding start to season 2019, John Noble joined Collingwood’s list and as with Will, made a significant impact at the highest level. Both players selected in finals sides for their respective clubs is an indication of the talent they possess and we will watch on with interest as their careers progress.

The November draft saw Will Day selected at Pick #13 by ‘the family club’ Hawthorn. How fitting for the Day family, with grandfather Robert a past player at the Hawks, that they now can support Will on his AFL journey.

For all three; Will, Will and John, we wish them all the best in their AFL careers.

We also bid farewell to a number of players during the year. Zac Bates and Mason Middleton left to pursue football in the country, while Nigel Osborn retired to focus on a career with the SA Metropolitan Fire Service.

After 54 league games, Hugh Haysman has headed to Melbourne to pursue other opportunities.

A club favourite, Dustin Head, also called time on a career cut far too short by injury. Dustin’s impact on this football club is far greater than his games tally as he has shown unbelievable resilience in the face of injuries and operations. He is highly regarded by all who he has played with, trained with or spent time with and will be missed amongst the playing group. We say goodbye (for now) to Jono Beech who has been an outstanding performer for the football club over many years. Our leading goal kicker in 2019, Jono heads to Queensland for 2020 but has left the door open for a return and we hope to see him back in black and red in 2021.

Finally, dual best and fairest winner and former Captain Chris Schmidt has called time on a career spanning 146 games for WAFC. Schmidt, a Player life member and also with a Jack Oatey Medal to his name has been a fantastic leader and an asset to the club over many years. We wish Chris all the best in life after SANFL football and as with all retirees and past players, hope to see him around the club in the future.

COMMERCIAL OPERATIONS

Off the field, there were mixed results as well. We generated more revenue than the previous year but with increased costs will record a reduced overall profit. There are many underlying factors, but safe to say that there has been a significant amount of work put into implementing stronger cost control measures for the future. These measures, combined with the absence of some non-recurring expenses that were cleared in 2019, give us a strong foundation from which to build. We continue to receive strong support from loyal partners and it was with great pleasure that we were able to secure the ongoing support of Adelaide Galvanising Industries. Sincere thanks to

Tony Grantham and Stuart Nunn for their support of the club in its endeavours and we look forward to working with you again in 2020 and beyond.

We welcome a new naming rights partner and look forward to growing the partnership as we play our home games at Hisense Stadium for the next three years. The support of a global brand, a leader in their field, is indicative of where we want to be as a club and we look forward to working with Hisense into the future.

I would like to thank City Mazda for their support over many years as the naming rights partner for the oval. They have been long term supporters of WAFC and have committed ongoing partnership, despite stepping away from the oval naming rights. A huge amount of credit also must go to Director Nick Karasoulos, who has brought numerous new sponsors to the club in season 2019. Nick’s work to engage these companies and share his passion for WAFC with new members and supporters is an asset to the club.

To all of our partners, your ongoing support is greatly appreciated. We look forward to working with you again in 2020 and beyond.

We are privileged to have the support of the most active coterie group amongst all SANFL clubs. To Matthew Matschoss and his Committee, and all Westonians Members thank you for your support through 2019. The projects both small and large funded or supported by the Westonians are a valued component of the club and Westonian members should know that your contribution is hugely valuable for your beloved club.I would like thank all Directors who have served on the Board during the past 12 months. As volunteers of the club your time and input is extremely valuable. On a personal level, it is a privilege to work with the current group of directors in pursuit of better things for the West Adelaide Football Club.

Finally, to a small group of staff and a large group of volunteers that dedicate so much to their roles, thank you. Without you the club could not hope to compete in SANFL, SANFLW or underage competitions. From those who dedicate a few hours, to those that dedicate hundreds across the year I thank you all for the time you spend and your support of this wonderful club.

Looking forward to bigger and better things for Westies in 2020 and beyond.

SENIOR FOOTBALL

Season 2019 saw Gavin Colville enter his second season as Senior Coach at the club. After finishing 7th in 2018, Gavin was excited for where the group could go to in 2019.Over the off-season the club recruited Patrick Levicki from Norwood, Jade Cleeland from Werribee, Chris Schmidt returned, Will Snelling returned and Dallas Willsmore from Hawthorn. Tom Keough was appointed club captain for the second successive year.

Our coaching staff also saw some changes with Josh Ramsey taking over the reigns as coach of the Reserves team, Andrew Bruce was a league assistant coach and Rickie Kelly as assistant coach of the reserves team. They all provided Gavin with great support for the season along with the remaining coaches from season 2018. All coaches dedicated many hours to helping improve our group and we thank them for their efforts.

The 2019 season began with the League team being highly competitive and in Round 1 against Port Adelaide with a quarter to go was right in the mix before being overrun, the following two weeks were a bit inconsistent but the team were able to put it together in Round 4 against the Eagles and secure the first win of the year.

In the early half of the season the club had some great individual performances which were highlighted at the inaugural AFL Mid-Season Draft where John Noble (Collingwood) and Will Snelling (Essendon) were both drafted which was a great achievement for the players and great recognition for the club as we continue to provide talent for AFL clubs.

No doubt the draft, which occurred between Round 6 and 7 in the SANFL impacted our League team with two of our best players leaving the club for the AFL. Although the results in the second half of the season weren’t what we would have liked, with only one more win against North Adelaide in Round 13, it did provide the club the opportunity to give players a chance to play League football and develop for the future.

The season finished with the League team having a record of 2 wins and 16 losses and finishing in 10th position. Although the result doesn’t look great on paper, it is important to note the positives with the development of our emerging League players for the future.

We had a number of debutants for the year including Jade Cleeland, Patrick Levicki, Dallas Willsmore, Patrick Fairlie, Nigel Osborn, Kyle Kirk, Riley Thilthorpe, Sam May & Connor Fairlie. In total 37 players representing the club at League level throughout the year.We had the following game milestones for the following players in 2019:50 Games – Aaron Anderson, Brett Turner, Ken Karpany & Hugh Haysman100 Games – Tom Keough, Kaine Stevens & Nathan Batley150 Games – Logan Hill150 club games – Jonathon Beech

Our award winners for season 2019 are to be congratulated:President’s Award – Josh RyanBloods Footy Award (selected by players) – Murray WaiteRoger Luders Award (Leading Goal Kicker) – Jonathon BeechGrantley Fielke Award (Player who shows outstanding leadership, team focus, commitment & consistency) – Dustin HeadSam Suckling Shield (Best First Year Player) – Dallas WillsmoreBill Downs Memorial Trophy (Most Improved Player) – Elliot DunkinNeil Kerley Medal 3rd Place – Elliot DunkinNeil Kerley Medal 2nd Place – Kaine StevensNeil Kerley Medal 1st Place – Logan HillFrancis Elmer Award (Volunteer of the Year) – Roger Brine

The Reserves were coached by Josh Ramsey who took over from Damian Minervini who stepped up to be a League assistant coach in 2019. Josh was assisted by Rickie Kelly, Oscar Oliver-Dearman and Chris Haddock.

The team started the season extremely well and were on top of the ladder after Round 11 but unfortunately with plenty of injuries to the club we finished the season with 7 wins and 11 loses and 7th on the ladder. Although it may look disappointing in the end not to play finals, we were able to give plenty of opportunities to Under 18 players in the Reserves team to build on for the future.

Our award winners for season 2019 are to be congratulated:Reserves Coaches Trophy – Kyle KirkBob Lee Memorial Trophy 3rd Place – Tom Lynch & Scott BentleyBob Lee Memorial Trophy 2nd Place – Connor NoonanBob Lee Memorial Trophy 1st Place – Sam MayWe are excited by 2020, with the continued development of the young players coming through the club and with some talented players joining us for the journey and with a new season, comes new opportunity.

We farewell Jonathon Beech, Jack & Lachie Evans, Hugh Haysman, Connor Noonan, Dustin Head, Nigel Osborn, Tom Pillion, Chris Schmidt and Errin Wasley-Black and thank them so much for their efforts and contribution to the club both on and off the field over a number of years.

We would like to continue to thank all the volunteers that regularly assist the football club, week in and week out, without

A special mention for our departing doctor Ange Moran who finished with the club in 2019 and we wish her all the best in the future.

U18 CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

Following a disappointing 2018 campaign, season 2019 brought with it a fresh burst of energy for our U18 centre of excellence with a fresh face of players graduating from the U16 program the previous year. I was pleased to continue in the role of U18 Coach and was joined by Daimon Head, James Lyon and Scott Patching as my assistants. It was clear from the start that the group were working well together both on and off the field, and were determined to drive rapid improvement for season 2019.After a slow start to the season that saw the group record 2 wins from the first 6 matches, the momentum began to build quickly as the side won 10 of their final 12 matches to finish 2nd on the ladder behind the Eagles. The season saw the team hang on to small leads, come from behind late to win, and at times put dominant performances together with a good blend of natural flair and team structure. Unfortunately two competitive finals losses meant the season finished one week earlier than hoped, but the group should still be commended on an excellent season.

U18 award winners for season 2019 are to be congratulated:Herde Family Award for Most Improved Player – Zac WooldridgeBest Team Man – Bailey FielkeCoaches Trophy – Bailey BoughenKnott / Mitchell Memorial Scholarship for Outstanding Potential & Character – Riley ThilthorpeCorey Siemers Memorial Award – Best player from the Riverland – Zac WooldridgeBest player from Roxby Downs – Bailey ChamberlainBest player from the Mallee – Mack PederickPlayer of the finals – Riley ThilthorpeJake Watson Memorial Medal – 1st Place – Joel GroomJake Watson Memorial Medal – 2nd Place – Aryan SareenJake Watson Memorial Medal – 3rd Place – Beau Nunan

Perhaps most impressive was the ability of the team to keep performing despite large player movement between the grades. 11 players played reserves or league football with Riley Thilthorpe securing a regular league spot in the second half of the season. 4 players were selected in the state U18 squad – with Will Day the only one to play as injuries hampered Angus Rana, Tom Rundle & Riley Thilthorpe. 14 players were identified to progress to a senior pre-season for season 2020, up from just 8 the previous year.

U16 CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

Following the departure of Naomi Maidment, we welcomed Michael Wakim to the Head Coaching role for our U16 team.

Michael had previously been an assistant to Naomi and it was obvious from the start that he was well suited to this role. Michael’s ability to relate to players, coaches and parents is a great strength and ensured a smooth transition in to the role. With an excellent team of coaches and support staff along with a highly driven group of players, it was no surprise that the team performed well on the field. Apart from a round 7 hiccup against the Eagles, Michael’s team went undefeated through the minor round to finish top of the table with an excellent percentage. This performance is even more significant considering a squad of 44 players was played at some point throughout the season.

The knockout semi-final against Norwood was a difficult day. Whilst the team didn’t play overly well, they battled the whole way and a goal in the dying minutes saw them record a 3-point win and advance to the Grand Final. Sometimes the final game of the season doesn’t go to plan and this one certainly didn’t as a rampant Glenelg outfit ran out 39-point winners. Missed opportunities in the first quarter and a poor second quarter meant the game got away from us.

On an individual level the U16 group recorded some significant achievements. 7 players were included in the U16 state squad, 14 played in the U17 intra-state championships and 10 continued with the U18 squad for the remainder of the year with many of them playing U18 football.

ELITE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Elite Development Program saw more than 250 players from across our metropolitan and country areas take part in a variety of training sessions and matches. Coordinated and assisted by senior players, the program continues to be a valuable pathway for future aspiring players at our club. In a change to the format for 2019, SANFL fixtured matches saw us play against other SANFL clubs at various league grounds around Adelaide. This was seen as a highlight for the players involved and we look forward to these continuing in the future. The U15/17 Intra-State Championships were again a highlight of the year and a good chance to assess where our talented players sit in comparison to other clubs. Each of our sides experienced a mixed week with some positive performances along the way.

ZONE ENGAGEMENT

We always need to be mindful of our development zones and ensure we are providing as many opportunities for engagement as possible with our programs. 2019 saw us travel to the Riverland, Mallee and Roxby Downs to work with local clubs and schools to ensure our club is recognised in the community and we are assisting the local football community where possible. Coach developmend sessions were conducted throughout the year and were well attended by local club coaches. Our U16 and U18 teams travelled to the Mallee and Riverland respectively as part of their pre-season preparation and was enjoyed by all involved.

Page 28: WEST ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB INC. & WEST ADELAIDE ...

26

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

Our 2019 SANFL Women’s team had a very promising year, finishing 5th on the ladder with six wins and four losses, only missing a finals berth due to percentage. While missing the finals was disappointing, it shouldn’t detract from the gains made on the back of hard work put in by both coaches and players throughout the season. We retained the majority of our playing list and had eight of our junior players join our SANFLW team and certainly took on the challenge.

The team welcomed a new Head Coach, Shane Moon, with assistance from Daniel Caire and Janet Bradley. Shane Moon was excellent in his new role and continually showed his dedication and belief in the team throughout the season. It was also clear to see his knowledge and experience was going to reflect on the team’s growth, which was a key focus in building from the previous season. It is a credit to Shane for his hard work and commitment to the team in 2019 and we thank him for his efforts. We would particularly like to thank our support staff who did an exceptional job as team managers, trainers and property stewards.

In September 2019, the group started their pre-season conditioning and craft work early and it was apparent during the matches that their fitness and skills had improved immensely. The pre-season camp was a positive weekend away in Victor Harbor where the players were able to bond together and establish a culture that would lead to success. There were many positives to be taken away from the 2019 Season and we look forward to welcoming a new coach coming on board for the 2020 season. Our best and fairest was awarded to an outstanding player, Abbie Ballard, who continually puts in the hard work at training and her hometown in the Mallee. Madison Newman took out second place in the best and fairest and Rebecca Owen finished in 3rd place. Congratulations to Chelsea Biddell and Madison Newman for being drafted to the Adelaide Crows for the AFLW 2020 Season. We wish Chelsea and Madison the best of luck as they embark on this exciting new journey.

The Junior Female Program has continued to grow over the past few years and once again the U15 and U17 State-wide Super Shield showcased many of our upcoming talented players. The trials held in the July School holidays saw 75 players attend in the hope of gaining a position in either team. This was the highest attendance rate over the existence of the competition, therefore making it very difficult for our coaches to select two squads of 30. Our U15’s side was coached by Janet Bradley and assisted by Jacalyn Pickering, and the U17 side was coached by Brett Baldey and assisted by Daniel Scott and Mary Smith. The U15’s side had another great season showing potential in all three matches. The U17’s team had an outstanding season winning 3 out of 4 matches played. They were particularly impressive in round 2 with a strong win against Woodville West Torrens. Zoe Venning was our highest goal scorer and Lauren Young made it into the best players weekly. It is exciting to see the talent emerging in both U15 and U17 sides, and we look forward to having a number of players train on with our SANFLW side.

We often get asked what are the Westonians?

We all answer in different ways, but I say the most successful and respected coterie group in the SANFL.

That is rapidly followed by what do they do?

I see the Westonians as a group of West Adelaide supporters that gather to raise money for the club and enjoy each other’s company in a social setting.

It is then the role of the Committee to facilitate that in the best way possible.

It has been a pleasure being involved with the Westonians Committee during 2019. Firstly, and possibly most importantly we have contributed $80,000 toward the West Adelaide Football Club in income generation, direct cash donation and payment for projects throughout the year. A magnificent achievement in a tough year on and off the field.

That coupled with a truly enjoyable atmosphere at our match day functions and all of our events held throughout the year, has meant that the Westonians have continued to be a vital part of West Adelaide Football Club.

I wish to thank two retiring board members for their incredible work.

Fay Barton has done a tremendous amount of work to contribute to the Westonians both in the seven years she sat on the committee and the eight or so years prior to that where she was instrumental in organising the major raffle. Fay will be sadly missed from our committee.

The second, Kerry Carn, has been a fixture at the Westonian committee for most of its existence. Kerry has been the keeper of the truth as Secretary for 24 years. He quietly goes about making sure everything is organised and under control. No one can imagine a committee without him. We look forward

to seeing him and Sue at our functions, relaxing and enjoying everyone’s company.

I would like to thank all of those on the committee this year, all played a vital role in our success. Vice President – Graeme Barton, Treasurer – Troy Abbot, with Paul Evans, Richard Sellers, Doug Allen, Gayle Dolphin, returning member David Price together with new members this year Richard Sykes & Kristen Demetriou.

We had great functions this year continuing the Quiz Night & Race Day. Together with our major raffle, 100 club, 50/50 raffle and match day raffles we have continued to raise much needed funds for the club.

For their help on match day I would like to thank the Cheer Leaders for both work behind the bar and helping sell the 50/50 raffle.

In all I would like to thank everyone’s input throughout the year and look forward to successful year in 2020. Next year will begin planning for our 50th year celebrations.

PAST PLAYERS & OFFICIALS REPORT

PAST PLAYERS & OFFICIALS COMMITTEE

Season 2019 was one of change for the Past Players & Officials with the committee trying new ideas to entice Past Players & officials back to the club. Instead of an annual dinner you were invited to attend a match day lunch to see if we could entice some of the more recent retirees back to the club. Although numbers were just above 30, we still feel we could have achieved more. Apart from this, numbers attending our rooms on match days are still increasing with many enjoying our hospitality & catching up with old mates.

The committee will be working even harder this year to come up with new & maybe some old initiatives to get you back to the club. We are building a stronger alliance with the best coterie group in the SANFL, The Westonians, & we hope to bring some exciting news further into the 2020 season. During the year we were invited to attend the Glenelg Past Players at their home match day versus the Bloods. A few of our members enjoying the hospitality they offered. We of course reciprocated when it was our turn to play them at home. These days are a great chance to catch up with not only old foes but mates you played alongside with. We hope to continue this tradition in season 2020 so keep an eye out for these upcoming events.

Our sponsorship of the West Adelaide football club continues with our under 18 Memorial Award Sponsorships. This year won by: Joel Groom “Jake Watson Memorial Medal” Riley Thilthorpe “The Knott/Mitchell Award” & Zac Wooldridge “The Cory Siemers Award”, Congratulations to these three young men.

We lost some great servants throughout season 2019 who have represented & served our club so well. They include Peter Phipps, Neil Morris, Donald (Buzz) Bailey, 1947 Magarey Medallist Ron Benton, Doug Walhurst, Adrian Eustice, Trevor Haupt, Max Hewitt & just recently wife of the late great Past Players & officials life member Ken Eglinton, Maureen Eglinton. They will always be remembered as a part of our great club.

Two of our long-time servants of the PP&O have decided to retire from the committee.

On behalf of the committee I would like to thank Robert Day & Craig Bennetts for their time & service over many years. The two people replacing Robert & Craig are Mike Hamilton &

Troy Abbott. We look forward to working alongside these two great stalwarts of the West Adelaide Football Club.A reminder to all Past Players & Officials to come & bring an ex-team mate along who haven’t been attending our home games. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been away from Richmond Oval “Hisence Stadium” for five minutes or five years please come back & cheer on our Bloods. Your support for our club & players is greatly appreciated.

We would like to thank the Management & Staff of the West Adelaide Football Club.

Good luck to Gavin Colville & your young men in Season 2020 we hope it’s a successful one for you all.

We look forward to seeing you all in our rooms located at the northern end of the mound bar in season 2020. Please check out the club’s web site for upcoming events for the Past Players & Officials.

The History Group has continued to catalogue the club’s memorabilia and recent donations which now number well over 1200 items.

This year the Group conducted its first ever “Show and Tell” on Sunday 14 July 2019, where the majority of rare and valuable items usually stored in the “Mark Beswick History Room” were displayed in the Sturt Pea Room for the day. Over 100 people visited and many people were amazed at the collection. Some people attending donated or loaned memorabilia to the club. Some good funds were also raised through the sale of some surplus items.

Gerry McGinlay from “At the Toss of a Coin” attended and has also assisted in the valuation of memorabilia.

The History Group are still seeking WAFC Annual Reports for 1922, 1923, 1926, 1931 and 1932 as we do not have a copy. Can you assist?

FINANCE REPORT

Clearly this has been a challenging year for all members of the Board as changes were only made in February 2019. During the reporting period, there have been many changes in both staff and operations, we believe we are now heading in the right direction but there remains much work to be done. This strategy may not be reflective in the financial performance of the Clubs at this stage, but it is important in a rebuilding phase, we establish strong foundations from which to grow.

Despite these comments, I am still disappointed with the financial results presented for FY19 but feel confident that the initiatives now in place will position the Club towards off-field success. Collectively between the Football Club and Footballers Club, we made a very modest profit of $118,004 which included the SANFL distribution to all Clubs from its land divestment funds. That receipt was again used to retire debt owing to the Wolfpack. We expect the balance of monies owing to the members of this valuable investor group will be repaid early in 2020. There are several other restructuring measures to effect in 2020 but one of the key initiatives of the Board is to reduce both debt and operating expenses.

Over the course of the year, the Finance & Audit committee took a critical view of the Club’s financial position and adopted a conservative approach regarding the Club’s assets & liabilities. As a result, there have been several abnormal trading events relating to write-offs of bad debts, write-off of old stock, unforeseen cleaning costs and re-stocking in the kitchen and unbudgeted commitments which affected the results by approximately $60,000. We are not anticipating a repeat performance in FY20 as we have implemented changes in processes and procedures. In addition, we are now better utilising the H&L software to monitor bar & bistro trading, conducting a monthly review of gaming data and have implemented a rostering system to schedule casual employees and manage costs.

The Board acknowledges the Club will continue to face financial pressures in 2020 as the changes and all controls measures are fully established. Clearly, the Board and management has recognised you cannot keep doing the same thing and expect a different result.

With the continued support of the members and supporters, we are confident the Club remains viable, but it is vitally important we generate a solid cash flow. We need everyone to continue to support our sponsors, fill the venue, enjoy a drink, have a meal and support the team during the season. As you would be aware, Gavin is now engaged full time as our League coach and we have a full salary cap in season 2020. These are additional costs beyond FY19 that need to be met and I particularly urge our supporters to buy memberships, attend our home games and special events throughout the year ahead and enjoy the hospitality on offer. Our budget for FY20 demonstrates our capacity to be operationally profitable and forecasts improvement in our cash flow.

I would like to thank Ben, Gayle, and Heath Pocock for their assistance over the past year which has challenged us all at times. I would also thank my fellow Board members and the executive of SANFL for their support of the Club in 2019.Very special thanks to our sponsors for their continued loyalty, the Wolfpack members for their valuable support, our suppliers and trading partners, our players, coaches and volunteers, our office and bar staff, members, and supporters because without you, we have no Club.
