Welcome to Cammell Laird 1907
Good afternoon and welcome to today’s North West Counties League Division 1 South game against Cammell Laird 1907. We welcome their officials, players and supporters to the Step Places stadium here at Brookburn Road and we hope they enjoy our hospitality today. As this is our first home game of 2020 we would also like to wish everyone a
Happy and prosperous New Year. We have already met this season back in September when we returned from the Wirral with a hard fought 2-1 win. Lairds are currently in 10th place in the league on 29 points, although they are currently on a run of 5 straight defeats. As for ourselves our recent results have been a real mixed bag. A narrow loss at Stockport Town was followed by a disappointing afternoon on Boxing Day when we were comprehensively beaten by Maine Road in the South Manchester derby. This was followed by a frustrating draw at bottom club St Martins before we returned to winning ways last Saturday with a 2-1 win away at Alsager. Hopefully we can now go on a winning run before we become too detached from the top 4. Our ground renaming ceremony which was postponed in December due to the adverse weather conditions has now been rearranged for March 14th when we entertain current league leaders Vauxhall Motors. Hopefully the day will prove to be an enjoyable occasion with much better weather. Following the last 2 home games the committee has now decided that the flooding situation at the ground entrance and car parks cannot be allowed to continue. This was due to be addressed as part of the proposed upgrade of the ground currently being assessed by the local council planners, however the problems caused by the adverse weather now need urgent maintenance action. Accordingly, we have asked consultants to assess the work required with regards to drainage and we hope to progress this as soon as possible. Our coming fixtures continue to be very lop sided. Following today’s game we have 4 away games, at:
• Cheadle Town next Wednesday 15 January ko 8pm
• Stone Old Alleynians on Saturday 18 January ko 3pm
• Wythenshawe Town on Tuesday 21 January ko 7.30pm
• Cheadle Heath Nomads on Saturday 25 January ko 3pm
Our next home game is:
• Tuesday 28 January when we entertain Sandbach United ko 7.45pm. This is the first of 6 consecutive home games throughout February which will be advised nearer the time. Finally. it is noticeable that we are taking more and more supporters to away games, we now have a regular away following of at least 20, who never fail to make themselves heard. This support is much appreciated by the management and players and we thank you for your efforts.
Thank you for visiting Step Places Stadium and have a safe journey home.

Chairman’s Notes…
A warm welcome to the Step Places Stadium to the officials and players from today’s visitors; Cammell Laird Football Club and today’s match officials. Welcome also to our amazing fans and spectators - your support is greatly appreciated.
This is our first home game of the new decade and we look forward to the match against a club that we have faced several times before in some stirring and tough encounters both home and away, particularly when we were both competing in the NWCFL Premier Division.
It was very encouraging to start the new decade positively following a 2-1 away win against a resurgent Alsager Town FC last Saturday. Backed by our fantastic and vociferous travelling supporters it was great to witness the togetherness of the team and the huge levels of energy and effort they exerted to secure victory. I hope this will give us the platform needed to push us closer to the top four.
As you would expect, changes in our first team management have led to a transition period and we have seen some players leave the club and new players joining us. Chris and his backroom team have faced additional challenges due to the festive holidays – coach and player availability, injuries and development of new relationships on the pitch as new players begin to establish themselves. A sustained period of stability and strong performances together with a firm commitment from our group of players will have a significant impact on the remainder of the season.
Our Women’s Team are facing higher calibre opposition following their promotion last season to the North West Women’s Regional League. Consolidation is the aim for this season and I look forward to watching some of their matches and the Women’s Development Team matches over the next few weeks. Women’s and girl’s football is a growth area for WDCFC.
Junior football is also a growth area for WDCFC and the number of teams in the Junior section continues to increase. Tim and his colleagues are working hard to improve coaching standards and coaching resilience for each team. These foundations will serve to strengthen our position and reputation as one of the top junior clubs in South Manchester.
Our Vets team are having a good season and are aiming to finish in a high league position.
Off the pitch the WDCFC committee have been focusing on the implemention of a programme of work aimed at improving the governance and structure of WDCFC. We will publish more information about this important work later this month. To deliver the programme of work in full we will need some help from new volunteers both within and outside the club with specific professional expertise and experience in a number of key areas. Committee colleagues and I will set out our requirements over the next few weeks. We would be grateful for any help that fans, their friends or work colleagues can provide.
Enjoy today's game and stay safe… Come on West!

NWCFL Division One South Results and Fixtures
Match Reports
26 December
West 0 (Moloney pen 59, Cottee 85) Maine Road 3 (Coop 11, 27, Campbell 74) Att: 392
West fell to an abysmal derby defeat as Maine Road helped themselves to South Manchester bragging rights.
On a Boxing Day afternoon to forget, the visitors cruised into a two-goal lead inside half an hour thanks to Jack Coop’s brace. Oscar Campbell added the gloss with 16 minutes remaining, with former West man Conrad Betton effectively a spectator in the visitors’ goal.
Callum Jones shot straight at Betton inside the first five minutes, but on a murky Chorlton afternoon this proved to be a false dawn. The visitors quickly assumed control and Coop opened the scoring after 11 minutes, outpacing the West defence and rounding Andrew Jones to finish easily.
The clinical Coop added his and the visitors’ second just before the half-hour mark in similar circumstances – again he was afforded space in the West final third, but on this occasion he opted to go over Jones instead of round and the ball dropped over the line to double Road’s advantage.Betton was finally called into meaningful action in the 91st minute when Curtis Miller had a fierce drive tipped over, but the derby had long since been decided and West move on to Saturday’s trip to St Martins in dire need of improvement.

Report: Robert Lee
28 December
St Martins 2 (Forde 4, Wells 26) West 2 (Blackwell 2, Heathcote 58) Att:
In a game that sometimes threatened to fizz and pop, there were no fireworks as West ended the decade not with a bang but a whimper with a draw at bottom-placed St Martins.
The game started in fine fashion for the travelling side, with Callum Jones starting brightly to release George Blackwell in the area after only two minutes, with the winger amply slotting home, with thoughts of a procession entering the away supporters minds. However, mere moments later the sides were back level as a blocked Andrew Jones clearance looped back over the
keeper and into the empty net – a moment of luck that reset the game in the host’s favour.
For the remainder of the first half, St Martins were in the ascendancy, and were well worth the lead when they added a second on 26 minutes. No luck was involved this time as West were sliced open with ease, a lack of pressure on the ball meaning Jones could only parry a shot, before it was stroked into the net unchallenged.
- 7 -
At the break, any home support must’ve rued the Saints inability to turn dominance into further goals, with a Sam Heathcote effort that glanced the post being the only real effort of note for West as the home side dominated.
However, the second period started brighter for Chris Rowley’s team – Chris Middleton heading onto the post from a corner on the 52nd minute, before parity was finally achieved. Curtis Miller, a bright spark all game, found the byline before squaring the ball across the 6 yard line, with Heathcote waiting to tap home.
Sadly, it was to be the last goal of the 2010s for West, as pressure failed to turn into 3 points. Stephen Hall, a late sub, was perhaps closest to earning the lead with his first touch of the game – a header across goal that went the wrong side of the post – but St Martins could just as easily feel aggrieved that they failed to gain their first win since August.
With West pressing for a third goal, the Saints broke, but their man could only find the advertising hoardings with the goal at his mercy.
A fair point for both sides, but West will use the dawning of a new year to cheer the end of a disappointing 12 months on the field, and to hope for a relatively big swing in fortunes come 2020.
West: A. Jones, Cook, Cooper, Tinker, Middleton, Eckersley, Miller, C. Jones (Hall 90), Heathcote, Boland, Blackwell (Gabidon 62). Not used: Argent-Brown, Matthews, Ryan

Explaining Our Social Enterprise Partnership with…
Bounceback Food
WEST agree social enterprise partnership with Bounceback Food CIC that will bring cookery
workshops & supper clubs to Brookburn Road!
This year WEST will once again be
partnering with social enterprise
Bounceback Food CIC – a community
cookery school that supports people living
in food poverty in Greater Manchester,
Cheshire & North Wales. The non-profit
organisation uses the 'buy one, give one'
model on their public cookery courses to
generate free places for people using
foodbanks/getting third sector support and
sells staple items of food (pasta, soup, rice
etc.) in the same way as part of their
foodbank drive at market events.
This proactive approach to tackling food
poverty has helped them to teach over
1,500 people how to cook, donate almost
10,000 items of food to foodbanks and
provide over 50,000 meals as part of their
wider community outreach work which also
includes catering (e.g. our bonfire party),
supper clubs and corporate cook offs!
After a successful pilot in September,
we’ve agreed to let Bounceback run more
of their popular Secret dishes from around
the world cookery courses from the
clubhouse throughout the year (tickets are
already sold out until May!). For every
ticket bought, a free place is then given to
someone referred to the club via the
Longford Centre or Barakah Food Aid –
ensuring the whole community can come
together and share the joy of cooking.
Tickets are available via their Eventbrite
page or you can gift someone a place by
buying them a voucher via their website.
We will be hosting several fundraising
supper clubs as part of our Target 50
campaign too throughout the year – keep
an eye on our social media and blog for
dates and ticket information!
Find out more about Bounceback at
www.bouncebackfood.co.uk.
They are also on Facebook, Twitter &
Instagram, search ‘Bounceback Food’.
West Team of the Decade picked by Rob McKay
To end out the decade, we asked Rob – a man who has probably seen West in action just about as
much as anyone else over the course of the past 10 years – to select his team that he defined the
decade for West. Featuring fan favourites, and current club legends, it was a tough task but one he
navigated with aplomb. Listen to the podcast below or subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or any

History of Cammell Laird 1907
Cammell Laird
1907 FC can
trace its history
back to 1899
when a team
from the Upper
Boilers Shop of
Laird Bros
played in Birkenhead Park, before turning to
the rugby code. It was not until June 1907
that the Cammell Laird Institute AFC was
established, with its first fixture taking place
on 2nd September 1907 against Tranmere
Rovers, finishing 9th in the West Cheshire
League in their inaugural season (1907/08).
In the early years, the Club played at a
number of grounds and won their first trophy,
the Shipley Cup, in April 1921, before in the
summer of 1922 they moved to St Peters
Road (which still remains their current home)
as Kirklands FC. They disbanded in 1939 but
reformed in 1946. The Club had their most
successful period during the 1970s and 80s,
winning the West Cheshire League on a
regular basis. 1994/95 saw the club reach
the FA Vase quarter-finals before losing to
Arlesey Town.
The early part of the new millennium saw the
Club reach new heights. They started the
rise through the pyramid, making history by
becoming the first Club to win the
championship of the Second and First
Divisions of the North West Counties
League, which they achieved in 2004/05 and
then 2005/06. In the same year as that First
Division triumph, the club reached the FA
Vase semi-finals, losing to eventual winners
Nantwich Town, and two years later, the
Club gained promotion to the Unibond
Premier League. However, they were
relegated after just one season due to
ground grading.
Having fought relegation battles successfully,
the Club finished bottom of the Evo-Stik
Division One North in 2011/12, but were
reprieved, and bounced back the following
season by finishing league runners up before
losing on penalties in the play-off final
against Trafford.
Season 2013/14 saw Lairds finish 11th, but
the decision was taken to resign from the
Evo-Stik NPL and form a new Club: Cammell
Laird 1907 FC.
The new Club was formed on 28th May 2014
and entered the NWCFL Division One for
their inaugural campaign in 2014/15. In
October, the Club lost manager Tony
Sullivan to Witton Albion, and appointed Paul
McNally in the same month. He ably guided
the team to promotion, which was achieved
on Saturday 4th April. In the end, Lairds
finished 21 points clear of 3rd placed AFC
Darwen.
2015/16 saw the Club finish 15th in its first
season in the NWCFL Premier Division.
Early on, Lairds didn’t get the results that
their performances deserved, drawing or
even losing games that they largely
dominated. However, they soon found their
feet in the Premier Division. Their best result
was an emphatic 4-0 victory against eventual
champions Colne in October. In February,
Tony Sullivan returned to replace Paul
McNally as manager, and the Club ended the
campaign with a solid mid-table finish.
At the end of the season, Sullivan departed
and was replaced by former Prescot Cables
and AFC Darwen manager Neil Prince. The
new man in charge made an excellent start,
two fine performances deservedly seeing off
the challenge of AFC Darwen in the FA Cup.
It is fair to say that luck was not on the side
of Prince’s team at the start of the league
campaign, with several fine performances
not getting the results that they deserved.
However, after the 3-1 defeat to Squires
Gate in September, Prince resigned on good
terms with the Club, who were very
appreciative of his efforts, and both parties
wished each other well for the future.
Prince was replaced by former Lairds striker
Mick McGraa, who had taken over the
Reserve Team in the summer.
- 13 -
Cammell Laird History continued
McGraa has worked tirelessly to assemble a
very promising young side, and again with a
tad more luck in games that Lairds
dominated, they could have picked up more
points. Everything finally came together on
Saturday 18th March 2017, as a brilliant
performance saw Lairds beat AFC Darwen 4-
1 to record their first league win of the
season, which they followed up three days
later with a 2-1 victory against in-form Hanley
Town. Ultimately, results elsewhere
consigned Lairds to relegation by the end of
March, but the Club was now in a much
stronger position ahead of the Division One
campaign to follow in 2017/18.
Last season started off perfectly, the 4-1 win
against a higher-ranked Maltby Main side in
the Emirates FA Cup a sign of things to
come! Lairds were eliminated from that
competition despite a valiant effort at Evo-
Stik League outfit Leek Town, but after a
slightly shaky start, they went from strength
to strength in the league. From 5th
September to 21st April, they dropped just
two points at Kirklands, also defeating
Premier Division Congleton Town with ten
men on their own patch in the Macron Cup.
Lairds initially struggled on the road, but also
improved on that front after the turn of the
year. They finished the regular campaign as
one of the division’s form teams, securing the
final play-off place courtesy of a sensational
4-1 victory over champions-elect Silsden.
The Cammells also enjoyed a run to the final
of the LWC Drinks Cup, recording a notable
4-0 triumph at fellow top six challengers
Alsager Town along the way. In the final
against Prestwich Heys at Runcorn Linnets
FC, Joe Malkin’s header drew Lairds level at
1-1 just before the hour mark. Despite
hammering at the Prestwich door for much of
the second half, there was a sucker punch as
a brilliant late strike from John Main, followed
by an even more incredible save by Heys’
Russell Saunders, saw McGraa’s men on the
wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline. However,
Lairds responded brilliantly in the play-off
semi-final just three days later, stunning the
division by going to a Prestwich side, who
had hammered them 3-0 on the opening day
and finished the season on 91 points, and
coming from behind to win 4-1. That set up
an all-or-nothing midweek play-off final away
at Whitchurch Alport. There was to be more
heartbreak as a nightmare start saw Lairds
fall 2-0 behind within ten minutes. It just
didn’t click for the visitors on the night, and
despite Charlie MacInnes giving them hope
late on, it was a case of so near yet so far.
Two defeats in finals were a horrible ending
to what was an outstanding campaign which
saw McGraa’s team restore the pride around
Kirklands, and deliver long-lasting memories.
An eventful close season saw McGraa
depart for Vauxhall Motors, who re-joined the
Hallmark Security League. The majority of
the squad followed the manager to Rivacre
Park, but the Committee acted swiftly and
made a very exciting appointment in Phil
Burton. He guided the club to a solid 15th
place finish in the new First Division South,
two cup quarter-finals, and extraordinarily
Lairds became the lowest ranked team ever
to reach a Cheshire Senior Cup Final, where
they lost out to Nantwich Town.
Things are seriously starting to look up in
CH42. Plans are in place for the
development of a new clubhouse on the
Kirklands site, and it has been an extremely
busy off-season attracting the support of a
host of sponsors to enhance this ambitious
club’s short-term and long-term growth. A
new under 18s team has also been created,
partnerships forged with Tranmere Rovers
FC and Knowsley South FC, and the club’s
junior section continues to thrive

Match Report & Action…
4th January 2020
Alsager Town 1 (Archer 57) West 2 (Blackwell 20, Cottee 45) Att: 83
West began the new year on a winning note with a valuable three points at Alsager Town.
George Blackwell and James Cottee gave Chris Rowley’s side a deserved lead at the break, and though West’s momentum was checked by George Archer pulling a goal back and a series of injury-enforced substitutions, it proved enough to secure a first league win on the road since September.
The home side came into this game in more confident mood, winning both games since the appointment of new manager Stuart Tulloch, but there was little to choose between the teams in a scrappy opening period which saw three bookings in the first 30 minutes. But West began to seize the initiative and after Rhain Davis was adjudged to have beaten the Bullets’ offside trap, he squared to Blackwell who had an easy opportunity to score his second goal in as many games.
Blackwell then passed up a half-chance as West looked for another goal, narrowly prodding a through-ball wide of the far post, but an ultimately decisive second did arrive on the stroke of half time. Matt Eckersley’s clearance on the edge of his own box turned into a perfect pass for Cottee, who shrugged off an Alsager defender before clinically finding the bottom corner.
Things were going perfectly for West and Rowley, but the first bump in the road arrived during the half-time interval – Davis, impressive in central midfield
alongside the returning Lee Gavin, was forced off with a knock and replaced by Dylan Moloney. Though Moloney was instrumental as West started the second half brightly, the home side grew into the game and pulled a goal back just before the hour – Archer lurking at the far post to tap home a cross from the right wing.
West’s injury problems mounted as Eckersley limped off in the aftermath of Archer’s goal, with Chris Middleton his replacement. The Bullets should have equalised four minutes later when a shot from inside the area was sent wildly over Andrew Jones’ bar, but West were on the right side of another offside call with 20 minutes remaining when Archer saw a strike ruled out by the assistant’s flag. The visitors, though, had to see out the final 17 minutes without Zac Cooper, who became the third West player to exit due to injury.
But Rowley’s side, with substitute Dontai Gabidon slotting in at left-back, saw out the final moments in relative comfort to draw a line under a difficult festive period and make a step in the right direction in pursuit of the First Division South top four.
West: A. Jones, Cook, Cooper (Gabidon 73), Tinker, Heathcote, Eckersley (Middleton 60), Davis (Moloney ht), Gavin, Cottee, Miller, Blackwell. Not used: Boland, Hall.

Focus on one of our Sponsors: JP & Brimelow
Eddie Ellis is the face of J P &Brimelow Estate Agency in Chorlton & Didsbury.
Here he tells us about how they have built their successful business.
What does JP & Brimelow offer? We offer a personalised, one-toone service in buying and selling your home. Our double-fronted shop - based on Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton - opened in 2007, and since then we have continued to invest in the latest technology and on-going training for all the team. We deal with land sales, new homes, all developments, independent mortgage advisors, relocating families, corporate clients; a selling and buying service all under the one purple roof.
Why did you choose this industry to work in? I was attracted to the thought of working in marketing, but then creating a brand that sells properties and helps clients find their dream homes was created.
What do you believe sets JP & Brimelow apart from other estate agencies in this area? I believe that we offer a truly unique and tailored approach to buying and selling here in South Manchester. Nobody else has me or my team working on your behalf to get you that dream property. No two customers are the same and we always listen to your requirements, needs and must haves before we recommend a solution. We were committed to supporting our local community from day one when the business was founded, and this is something I’m very keen in doing
now and in the future. Football is a way of life here in Manchester and West Didsbury & Chorlton is a massive part of our local community.
What is the very best part of your job? Coming into the business everyday and working with my fantastic team who are dedicated and committed to providing the very best solutions in the buying and selling journey.
What are the three personal traits that somebody in your role needs to ensure that they and their business continues to grow and develop? To have a clear vision, enjoy what one is doing, to be always reading a good business book and to learn new things that will able you to achieve your goals.
