This is the first showcase of its kind; the ongoing Covid pandemic has prevented the resumption of our normal showcase program which would have seen the event take place live in a theatre. We have used the opportunity to craft a new experience, combining showreels and filmed monologues where viewers can observe the wide emotional range of our graduates.

BEATTM LAB

BEATTM uses current research and theories in affective neuroscience and psychoanalysis to reach character more effectively. It has been designed to re-create the actor as an emotional acrobat. ADS actors are trained to use their emotional instrument, their bodies and their minds to deliver subtle character portrayals for the screen and powerful performances for stage. Their performances and their embodiment of character aims to be seamless.

Fay Beck continues to develop the technique and has begun laboratory work on her method. She is currently designing the first workshops of their kind; to present BEATTM to leading researchers in the fields of affective neuroscience and psychology.

THE SHOWCASE

The work presented is the culmination of over two of dedicated, intensive training which the students undertook as part of the studio’s highest level of training, the 2 Year Drama Course. To graduate with this certification and to be invited to take part in the Final Year Showcase, students must show competence across study units in acting technique, text and scene work, voice and accent work, movement and screen acting. To be accepted into the program, students must have also completed studies in story, style, the business of acting, casting and branding.

We proudly graduate ten talented British and International actors. The 2021 Graduates are a diverse group in many senses of the term. We vouch for their dedication to the craft of acting, their professionalism, love and compassion for the audience, and their unparalleled drive and ambition.

In many ways BEATTM can be thought of as an Affective Neuroscientific re-interpretation of Meisner’s powerful technique. In many ways however, the technique differs fundamentally from Meisner’s work.

Within BEATTM the actor is reformulated as a resistance-free vehicle through which emotion flows. Character is understood as a lived, embodied experience. Familiar exercises, such as the famous Meisner Repetition exercise, are redeployed as a tool for self-awareness, mindfulness and as a method to break down resistances, blockages and inefficiencies.

In summary, BEATTM actors are trained to disengage emotional energy from ‘things’ (objects, places, people, events) in their own world and to re-apply them to ‘things’ in the character’s world.

TRAINING IN BEAT

Graduates have trained their acting skills through Beck Emotional Access Technique, (or BEATTM for short), a comprehensive training method developed from the Meisner Technique by Fay Beck, the studio’s director in line with her training in neuroscience and psychology.

SUPPORTING OUR GRADUATES

Our history is young but we are proud to have worked and nurtured actors and artists that have gone on to excel in film, TV and stage. Our aim for the future is to continue developing the careers of our graduates and valued students through increasing integration to the industry. We currently support this important work by providing our students with the opportunity to grow through involvement in our affiliated film companies Angry Bee Films and Aberrant Gene Films.

Our community of tutors and teachers have striven to ensure the training is delivered to the utmost quality and standard. While staff and students would have hoped to entertain you live, but with the pandemic situation continuing so to persist, we share with you a Digital Showcase presented online. We hope the format exceeds in its aim of showcasing our Graduates’ talent.
