Course DescriptionTheprimarypurposeofWritingandEditinginPrintandOnlineincludes(1)helping
studentsunderstandprinciplesofcomposing,especiallyastheycompareacrossdifferent
composingspaces;(2)writingforeachofthreespaces—print;screen;andnetwork;(3)editingthetextsdeployedineachappropriately.Toaccomplishthesegoals,we'llengage
withmultiplekindsoftexts—readingsome,writingsome,talkingaboutsome,creatingdigitalformsofsome.Inalltheseprocesses,we’llbedevelopingalanguage thatwecanuse
todescribethosetextsandinteractionsandtodescribewhathappenstothemandtous
whenwedothiswork.Ifwesucceedintheseefforts,you'llfindthatyouarecreatingandreadingtextsdifferently;thatyouaremuchmoreinformedabouthowotherswillread
yourtexts;andthatyoubringanewtheoryandintentionalitytoyourcomposingandediting.
Course Goals/ Objectives Duringthiscourse,youwill
• Exploreandlearntheoriesofcomposing/designingandtherhetoricalprinciples
thatguidethecomposinganddesigningoftextsfordifferentenvironments(inprintanddigitalmedia)
• Employthesetheoriesandprinciplestocreateworksappropriatetovariousmedia,
includingprint,screen,andnetwork• Developametacognitiveawarenessofrhetoricalprinciplesthatenablesyouto
understandhowtheseworkscanbere-purposedfornewenvironments• Writewithandagainststylesconventionalizedwithindifferentgenres
Course RequirementsThisisoneofthreecorecoursesfortheEditing,Writing,andMediaEnglishmajor,andas
such,ithelpsprovideafoundationforyourmajor.Todevelopthisfoundation,youwill
readagoodbit,andyouwillpracticeandreflectevenmore.Youwilldevelop praxis—practiceinformedbytheory.Youwillreadandcreatemanykindsoftextsandthen
considerhowtheyarealikeandhowtheyaredifferent.Theclasswillallowyoutoexplore
manyofyourownrelevantinterestsandtoengagewithothersinsomeofthoseexplorations.
Materials neededThemajorityofthetextswereadwillbefoundinthecourselibraryofourBlackboardsite.
Youwillneedtopurchaseanotebooktoserveasyourreading/analysisjournal.Finally,youmusthaveaccesstoalaptopandbringittoclasswithyou.

Op-Ed:Youwillwriteandreviseanextendededitorialpieceappropriateforamajordailynationalnewspaper.Youwillalsorespondtoclassmates’pieces.
Postcard:Youwilldesignapostcard(frontandback)suitableformailingatthe
specialPCrate.
Mimetic layout:Youwillrecreate/mimicapagefromamagazine.
Newspaper layout:Youwillselect,edit,andlayoutmaterialsforatwo-page
editorialspread.Hijack:YouwilluseHTMLtomakeawebversionofyourOp-Edpiece.
Blog Post:Youwillsetupablogandwriteapost.
Remediation:YouwillremediateyourOp-Edintoashortfilmoranother
appropriatemedium.
Electronic portfolio:Youwillcompileyourworkandpresentitinanonline
setting.
SRRs--SRR=Summarize,Respond,Reflect.
--YouwillwriteseveralSRRsthroughoutthesemester,asindicatedontheschedule.Unlessotherwisenoted,yourSRRshouldbeatleast400wordsinlength.
--YourSRRswillusuallybereadonlybyme,butsometimesyouwillbeaskedtoshare

Reading/Analysis Journal--Youwillkeepajournalinwhichyoureadandanalyzetextsthatyouencounteroutsideof
class.
