HISTORY OF WENDLAND MANUFACTURING CORP.

For over 84 years, Wendland Manufacturing has provided quality tanks and pressure vessels to their suppliers and customers. Many of our representatives have been with Wendland for over 50 years. Mr. H.G. Wendland founded the company in 1921 doing mainly light gauge fabrication. After the death of Mr. Wendland in the early fifties, the company expanded its tank product lines from mainly oil field work to propane tanks and hot water tanks under the direction of J.R. Salmon and his sons. These tanks became the major product lines during the fifties and sixties. In the seventies and eighties, propane tanks were dropped from the line and the focus became the hot water storage tank industry, and in the nineties, the larger hydropnuematic storage tanks were added to the line. Today, Wendland manufactures an entire line of tanks and pressure vessels for the water, waste water, chemical, and numerous other industries along with a light gauge line for the oil markets. In July of 1998, Wendland Mfg. Co. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Burnham Holdings of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The company name was changed to Wendland Manufacturing Corp. The

merger opened up new markets and introduced a new line of manufacturer’s representatives. Wayne McCune, who had directed the company since early 1997, was named President and General Manager. Under his management, new equipment was purchased, new products developed, and existing markets expanded. As a result, the labor force increased in size and sales increased. Together with the sales office in Atlanta, Georgia, the customer base for large hydropneumatic storage tanks and new customer accounts has dramatically increased. At Wendland Manufacturing Corp., the past has been good, but the future looks even better. The company is well situated to take advantage of important markets for the future. Water resource management is being accomplished by the use of Wendland water conditioning and water filter tanks. The hydropneumatic tank products have been expanded to meet the needs of municipal water districts and other waste utilities. With continued growth and expansion, Wendland truly represents the "can do" attitude and the "no job is too small" philosophy.

GENERAL INFORMATION Wendland Manufacturing created this catalog to assist the representative, architect, engineer or designer in selecting tanks for his/her needs. This catalog outlines only a few of the many standard tanks that we fabricate. Our standard vessel sizes are shown in table format for your convenience. The standard drawings are for customer convenience and should be used as a guide only. If you require, we can custom fabricate a vessel to your particular specifications and provide you with a custom drawing to your specifications. Wendland fabricates vessels to specifications of the two most commonly used tank standards. We fabricate A.S.M.E. Code vessels to requirements of

Section VIII, Division 1. In addition, we fabricate UL specification #142 for above ground installation. Also available is our standard non-code pressure tank built to your specifications. Wendland’s modern production facilities enable us to build a wide range of vessels. We can fabricate tanks from 10-gallon capacity to 50,000-gallon capacity or from one tank to any quantity you require. We have made a commitment to make the highest quality vessel available at an economical price and to give you the best service available in the industry. If required, Wendland will make every effort to assist you in formulating and writing a specification to meet your specific tank needs.

A.S.M.E. CODE TANKS & NATIONAL BOARD

REGISTRATION The American Society of Mechanical Engineers was established with the objective of formulating rules for fabricating pressure vessels, to afford reasonably certain protection of life and property and to provide a margin for deterioration in service so as to give a reasonably long period of safe usefulness. The A.S.M.E. Code governs the design material, fabrication, and quality control via an outside authorized inspection agency that oversees the A.S.M.E. Code vessel from start to completion by inspecting all processes. All Wendland Mfg. A.S.M.E. Code tanks are built in strict compliance to meet or exceed the A.S.M.E. Section VIII, Division 1 Code requirements. The tanks will be furnished with an A.S.M.E. Code nameplate, and we can furnish the customer with manufacturer’s data report verifying A.S.M.E. Code compliance. We can also register the tanks with the National Board of Boiler & Pressure Vessels if required.

U.L. STORAGE TANKS We also offer a U.L. labeled fuel storage tank, which is required by fire marshals of most municipalities. Underwriters Laboratories is an independent non-profit organization testing for public safety. This organization regulates material thickness, joint procedures and overall vessel design. We offer aboveground fuel storage tanks fabricated to U.L. specification #142. Our U.L. tanks are built under strict adherence to our Quality Control Department and meet all U.L. directives. Each U.L. tank is thoroughly inspected and tested prior to shipment. These tanks are intended for installation and use in accordance with NFPA30 and NFPA31 requirements of the National Fire Protection Association.

WENDLAND STANDARD PRESSURE TANKS

When the A.S.M.E. Code stamp is not required, Wendland can furnish a standard pressure tank of high quality built to your specifications. These tanks have sufficient safety factors and are hydrostatically tested at one and one half times the design pressure. Since these tanks are fabricated by the same personnel as the A.S.M.E. tanks, you can be assured that these vessels are built with the same welding procedures and meet A.S.M.E. Code quality. As a result of this, you will have a high quality tank at a more economical price than vessels built with the A.S.M.E. Code symbol. Wendland can also furnish you with a standard non-code pressure tank. These tanks also have sufficient safety factors and are air tested. These vessels are a quality tank at an economical price.

LININGS:

EXTERIOR PAINT

Unless otherwise specified, all vessel exteriors are prime painted before shipment. Prior to being painted, the vessel is cleaned of loose mill scale and rust with power grinders and power wire brushes. The vessel is then painted with one coat of Wendland standard shop primer. Sandblasting and most industrial and military specification exterior coatings are also available. Please consult the factory for this pricing.

HOT DIP GALVANIZING

For many years galvanizing has been popular for protecting steel water tanks. The zinc coating serves in twofold capacity. First, it protects the steel from corrosion as long as the zinc coating is unbroken. Second, due to the fact it is more electro-chemically active than steel, it sacrifices itself to protect the steel vessel even when moderate sized areas of bare metal have been exposed. Tanks to be hot dip galvanized are thoroughly cleaned; first by dipping in a caustic bath removing grease, oil and dirt, then by being dipped in a 12% solution of sulfuric acid removing rust and mill scale. The vessel is then rinsed and submerged in a liquid flux pre-dip. Finally, the vessel is immersed into the molten zinc at approximately 850° Fahrenheit to produce the finished product, which meets ASTM specifications. To have a successful galvanizing job, additional openings may be required which we at the factory can determine. We do not recommend galvanizing for water service when temperatures exceed 160° Fahrenheit. The largest diameter tank that can be galvanized is 72” OD.

“EPOXOLINE”

This superior tank lining has excellent resistance to corrosive hot water. It is a multifunctional epoxy phenolic resin reacted with a special aliphatic amine adduct. The polymer structure is odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, and has excellent resistance to thermal shock. This durable lining conforms to Title 21 CFR 175.300 US Food & Drug Administration and the USDA requirements for coatings in contact with food and drinking water. Prior to sandblasting, all interior welds are ground smooth to eliminate sharp edges and high spots. The vessel interior is then sandblasted to near-white metal per SSPC-SP-10 and lined with two separate coats of epoxy to produce 8-16 mils total dry film thickness. “Epoxoline” has service capabilities for potable water up to 180° F. dry and wet temperature. This lining will not crack or break during proper installation. For chemical applications, we suggest that you contact the factory for specific data and compatibility.

“CEMENTLINE”

Cement lining is another time tested lining for protection against corrosion in steel hot water tanks. Wendland’s cement lining is specially formulated hydro-plastic cement for withstanding corrosive hot water to 212° Fahrenheit. Prior to installation, the interior of the vessel is thoroughly cleaned of rust, mill scale and grease. The interior is then covered with a heavy-duty metal lath, which is secured to the vessel walls at 12” centers. The cement is then troweled throughout the vessel to a thickness of 5/8”. This creates a superior and durable lining which can better withstand handling during shipments along with an outstanding lining for corrosive hot water.

AWWA AND NSF LININGS

Hydropneumatic and other types of water tanks for potable water systems normally require a lining approved by State Health authorities. The American Water Works Association is a national organization, which most states recognize for lining standards of potable water storage tanks. Wendland offers several interior linings meeting the latest revision of AWWA D102 pamphlet for painting steel water storage tanks. We adhere to strict application requirements of this AWWA painting specification. For economical reasons, we recommend inside paint system #1, which is an epoxy system. These include TNEMEC Series 20 Potapox, and others that can be provided upon request. These systems meet EPA requirements and should give many years of trouble free service.

OTHER LININGS

Wendland has a wide variety of other tank linings available. They include asphalt, coal tar, epoxies, and many other chemical resistant coatings that are available for your specific requirements. We strive to keep abreast of innovations in the paint industry and improve and upgrade our current linings along with offering new linings when they are available. We take great care in the selection of linings, as they can add many years of service to your tanks. Contact us for your coating needs or if we can help select a particular lining for your purpose.

INSULATION AND METAL JACKET

Wendland also offers insulation and metal jacketing on all our pressure vessels. Standard insulation is 2” thick to meet ASHRAE specification 90.1-1989. Metal jacket is extra heavy 14-gauge material. The tank is prime painted prior to insulation and jacketing and then the jacket is also prime painted for added protection. Most insulated and jacketed vessels are skidded for shipment.

SPRAY FOAM INSULATION

Wendland uses polyurethane foam, R-16 with weatherproof topcoat. These tanks require protective skidding and special shipping arrangements. Please consult the factory if your specification calls for spray foam insulation.

IMPORTANT WARRANTY INFORMATION

To validate the warranty, Wendland Manufacturing requires that all hot water tanks be installed with dielectric bushings to aid in corrosion prevention. Please read the warranty sections of this catalog for additional information.

FIRE PROTECTION TANKS The Wendland fire protection tank is a pressure tank used for private fire protection systems. These tanks are constructed in accordance with the latest ASME code specifications, under Section VIII, Division 1 and meet the specifications as required by the latest edition of National Fire Protection Association pamphlet #22. To determine the capacity for the tank in this system, we suggest you refer to the latest NFPA pamphlet #13, “Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems” In all cases, sizing must meet the requirements of the local or State governing authority having jurisdiction. The outline drawing shown in this manual was specifically designed to meet ASME and NFPA requirements. If the governing authority requires changes, Wendland can fabricate the custom designed vessel to your requirements. In addition to the standard hydrostatic test dictated by the ASME Code, we will test the tank to meet NFPA #22 requirements. NFPA requires the tank to be tested 24 hours at two-thirds capacity at normal working pressure and shall not lose more than one-half pound pressure in this period. We will furnish a signed certificate for the file of the governing authority certifying that the test has been successfully completed. The NFPA requires the tanks be thoroughly cleaned by scraping, wire brushing, wiping, and be painted inside and outside with at least two coats of an approved metal protective

paint. As the interior is subjected to severe corrosion problems due to the standing water, we recommend the interior be painted with a coal tar lining or our standard Epoxoline. Due to shipping, we recommend the exterior be prime painted at the factory and the finish coat is applied at the job site. We can finish out the exterior per your requirements if needed. Sandblasting is available at the factory when required. Refer to the lining section of this catalog for other available linings and further explanation.

AIR RECEIVER TANKS

Wendland’s air receivers are utilized with air compressors for storage and improved operation of air systems. The vessel provides storage capacity permitting proper pressure and volume requirements during peak usage when normal compressor output is exceeded. Along with reducing air-entrained moisture and oil which settles during the storage period, it reduces pulsation in the systems due to peak requirements and helps extend the lifetime of the compressor. The drawings for air receivers in this manual are intended as a guide and are for customer convenience. Wendland Manufacturing Corporation can assist you in formulation and writing specifications for your air receiver requirements for higher operating pressures.

FLASH TANKS

Our flash tanks are intended for flashing of high-pressure condensate into steam. It can also be used for cooling low-pressure steam prior to return to boiler, condensate receiver, or for discharge into sewer. The flash tank drawings in this manual are our standards. We can custom fabricate each vessel to your exact requirements. We offer, at customer option, an inlet spray pipe. The area of the drilled holes in the spray pipe will be equal to the cross sectional area of the pipe. The Flash tank exterior will be power wire brushed and painted with one coat of standard shop primer. Galvanized tanks are available at customer option. Tanks larger than 36”

diameter will require a manway to meet A.S.M.E. code specifications. Wendland Manufacturing Corporation will make every effort to assist you in formulation and writing specifications for your flash tank requirements.

FLASH TANK NOTES

1. Flash tank material stocked is normally for 150 psi. Contact factory if you require different size or design pressure.

2. Vertical flash tanks are also available. 3. See Engineering Specification W-600 for a

written specification for this tank.

EXPANSION TANKS

Wendland’s standard expansion tank allows for the expansion and contraction of the hydronic system and provides for proper pressurization under different operating conditions. We recommend using ASHRAE’s latest guide and data book for determining your tank volume requirements. The catalog “C” model expansion tank drawing is our standard tank. Please consult the factory for expansion tanks built to your specific specifications if changes are required. Our expansion tanks are designed for 150 psi A.S.M.E. code with stamp and are tested at 225 psi. The “C” model tanks are thoroughly power wire brushed and prime painted prior to shipment. The “CG” model is our standard hot dipped galvanized expansion tank.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

FOR: Storage tanks, water heaters, and other pressure vessels.

OPERATION:

A. CAUTION: DO NOT FIELD WELD to any pressure-retaining component on an ASMEstamped pressure vessel.

B. All epoxy-lined vessels should be connected using dielectric isolators to form a breaker

between dissimilar metals. Failure to do so, will cause electrolysis that WILL damagethe interior lining. Failure to install dielectric isolators will void the warranty on thetank and/or heater.

C. Check all connections for proper hook-up. Make sure any unused connections are plugged

tightly. D. Before starting up, fill tank with cold water, venting all air from the system. Check for leaks

with city/county water pressure on system. E. After inspection, start the circulator (when applicable), open valves in lines supplying heating

medium to tank heating coil (when applicable). Do NOT open heating medium to heatingcoil until tank is filled with water. Severe damage can be done to heating coil otherwise.

F. Watch temperature of water in tank and set controls to provide desired outlet temperature,

using appropriate temperature (when applicable) and use appropriate control instructions. G. Check safety valves for free operation by lifting lever on side of valve and releasing. Valve

should re-seat. IF THE VALVE APPEARS TO FUNCTION IMPROPERLY, REPLACE ITIMMEDIATELY!

H. Approximately ten (10) gallons of water should be left in all cement-lined tanks or heaters

before installation to prevent the lining from drying out and cracking.

MAINTENANCE:

A. To open and/or inspect the interior of a tank or water heater, FIRST SHUT DOWN ALLFEED SERVICE LINES (water, air, steam, boiler water, etc.) to the tank or water heater. Besure that the vessel is DRAINED of contents BEFORE opening manholes/inspection ports orother connections. Be sure all pressure is relieved from the vessel prior to removing anyopenings.

Page 50: WENDLAND MANUFACTURING CORPORATION

WENDLAND MANUFACTURING CORP. 10-01-2004 44

Wendland Manufacturing Corp. MAINTENANCE (con’t) B. Open up vessel at least every twelve-(12) months provided manholes/inspection ports are

furnished. Wash out all sediment and inspect interior of tank for corrosion or otherproblems.

C. If tank is lined with a corrosion resistant lining such as Cemaline or Epoxoline, inspect for

damage to the lining. If magnesium anodes were supplied originally, check for possiblerequired replacement of anodes.

D. On Epoxy lined vessels, the Inspector should enter the tank wearing socks -- NOT SHOES!

SHOES AS WELL AS OTHER ABRASIVE ARTICLES WILL DAMAGE THE LINING. E. If tank lining is damaged or in need of repair, check with tank manufacturer for possible

suggested repair instructions. F. Clean off gasket surface of manhole/inspection ports, install new gaskets, pull up all

fasteners, and tighten securely. Check for any leaks and then fill vessel with cold water. G. On a water heater…if the heating coil is removed for inspection, replace the gaskets, tighten

the bolts securely, check for leaks, and reconnect the heating medium piping (CLOSED) tothe heating coil.

H. Inspect the vessel and all connections for leaks. I. Check relief valve for free operation. In case of malfunction or questionable operation,

REPLACE THE VALVE(S). J. With tank filled with water, supply heating medium to tank heating coil (when applicable),

start up circulator (when applicable), and check temperature controls for proper operation(when applicable).

WARNING: NEVER ALLOW THE INTERNAL AIR PRESSURE TO EXCEED THEDESIGN PRESSURE SHOWN ON THE WENDLAND LABEL ON THEVESSEL, AND DO NOT ALLOW THE WATER TEMPERATURE INSIDETO EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE FORWHICH THE INTERIOR LINING IS RATED.

Following these simple instructions will assure the owner many years of safe, trouble-free andefficient operation.

HANDLING AND LIFTING INSTRUCTION

1. ALWAYS USE THE LIFTING LUGS. To prevent damage to the interior lining, donot hook into the connections on the tank. Do not hook into the supports whenhandling. Do not hook into the manway yoke.

2. To avoid damage to the tank or the supports, do not pull, push, roll or drag the tank

when loading, unloading, locating, or handling. Use care when using a forklift tomove or locate the tank.

3. If it is necessary to enter the interior of the tank for inspection, enter with “sock feet”

only. Do not enter the interior of the tank with shoes. This can be very abrasive andmay cause severe damage to the interior lining.
