Foal Edition

It would appear I am a bit early for the foal edition as most people are foaling after my deadline for this newsletter. It is also interesting how many are not expecting any foals this year. Never mind we will include more photos in the next issue so don’t forget to send them to me with name, sire & dam. Sheryl Collins

Cover Story

This issues cover is of Sandy Mardell and her Section D stallion Trevellyn Fire Fly, winner of the 2012 / 2013 Performance Competition's Lorien Stallion Trophy with 1415 points. Trevellyn Fire Fly (now six) was purchased as a weanling by Sandy Mardell. He is by Arawa Royal Mail and out of Arawa Rosina. Rosina was sold from the Arawa Stud to the Trevellyn Stud before foaling hence Fire Fly having the Trevellyn prefix. But now living with Sandy he has ended up back in the same area as the Arawa Stud. Fire Fly was lightly shown in-hand and then at age 4 1/2 was broken to saddle. He competed lightly as a five year old in saddle cob and dressage competitions, around his serving duties. Sandy found that there were not many shows in driving distance that allow ridden stallions. But even with minimal outings he still did very well at all of the shows that he attended. He was placed Novice Champ Saddle Cob at Northern A&P, Novice Champ Saddle Cob at Oxford A&P, Saddle Cob Champion at Amberley A&P and also at Kaiopoi Show and Malvern A&P he was Reserve Champion Saddle Hunter/Saddle Cob. Sandy says "He is true to type of what we breed in UK as both parents are imports. This makes him stand 152cms (15hh) and have a good length of leg. He will compete under saddle lightly until breeding season is over and do a bit more after Christmas up until the end April. He has proven to cross well over both Section D, TB and Warmblood mares and he passes on his extreme laid back attitude. I myself have been breeding welsh ponies, cobs and large Partbreds in the UK since 1986. We have sold many Purebreds to Germany and Holland via Fair Oaks auction and the cob sales. I have been fortunate enough to judge some large shows in both England and Wales and have seen some very nice typey ponies along the way. We moved to North Canterbury from Carmarthenshire West Wales in 2007 and now concentrate mainly on Section D and large Partbred breeding, but also still very much enjoy ridden showing and judging a variety of sections." Congratulations Sandy and the very best of luck to you for this year. Samantha Rimmer-Johnstone

Presidents Notes November / December 2013 It seems Spring as per usual is showing her bizarre weather patterns, hot, cold, winds and torrential rain, with even more snow on the hills around our farm. Finally the grass has started to come away here so that is a good sign. We are patiently waiting for two foals, both mares are huge and hanging on in there. This is exciting for us as we lost our lovely yearling tbx ‘Markus’, just last week suddenly, the only foal we had last season. Just one of those things that rocks you a bit as a breeder as some of you will know. Some of you will have foals on the ground by now, and for those who are still waiting I hope your foaling season goes really well and I hope you get exactly what you have ordered. It really is quite an exciting time of year. The full Council met earlier this month, and a very productive meeting was held; thanks must go to all our Councilors’ for your input, and commitment. The weather in Wellington was beautiful and it was lovely for all of us to have a good out of council catch up in the afternoon while waiting for our respective flights. For those of you out showing this spring, I hope all is going to plan. For the first time a quite a few years now I have been preparing for this show season, and look forward to participating in the ring with some of our youngstock. Doing this also will get me out and about more and I will also be able to do more catching up with those I have not seen in a while. If you are out and about don’t be a stranger, come and say hello would love to hear how our members are doing etc. Please remember to look at our website www.welshponyandcob.co.nz for updates, If you have anything you think should be on our website, get hold of our Website Convener Samantha Rimmer-Johnston, all ideas are always welcome. Remember to contact either of our North or South Island Public Relations Officers, Ann Chamberlain (NI) and Brian Schroder (SI) if you require any of the Societies merchandise, they are both always helpful and have some great items for sale. If you have any photos that our Publicity Officer Dianne Kimpton can use in her articles for the overseas journals, I am sure she would love to hear from you as well. For contact information for those mentioned above please see the cover of this newsletter.

After discussion at the last council meeting it was decided that for the foreseeable future only stallions will be required to be DNA typed.

If you need to contact me please feel free to email me [email protected] or by telephone in the evenings on 03 5722678. Please if you have any queries at all, our Council members are there to help, so don’t be shy. Best wishes to you all for the upcoming festive season, the year seems to have flown by rather quickly, so I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and New Year. Sandra Evers

Councilor’s Profile NEW COUNCILOR – ANN CHAMBERLAIN

Hi Everyone, An introduction to you all as your new North Island Public Relations officer and councillor. We live about ½ an hour’s drive from Palmerston North up along the very scenic Pohangina Valley East Road. We have 65 acres of mainly native bush, and the Dundas Creek meandering through, only half of it is grazing for the ponies, although they do tend to do a lot of bush bashing and exploring ! I have been doing the North Island Sire Rating now for a few years too, which is very interesting to see all the progeny of our beautiful welsh stallions. I’m a reasonably new breeder of only just over 10 years of the very gorgeous Section A’s. I have my stallion Punga Philanderer of whom I was lucky to have purchased from Robin Collier, he’s been fab, such a wonderful temperament and has left me some very beautiful progeny, of which most are still here! I have only 4 main breeding mares, and only have 2 foals a year. So if any of you are passing by this way you are most welcome to pop in, I have a selection of merchandise, which is all advertised on our website, lots of stud books, so you can keep up with what everyone is breeding! And soon to be some new publications, very exciting. I will be at most of the Welsh Shows this year, and the Royal in Feilding, so hope to see some of you at some stage, I have huge footsteps to follow of Marian Lusby’s too! Happy foaling everyone!! Cheers, Ann Chamberlain, Rosa Stud.

New Foal Checklist

Collated by Sheryl Collins

1. Make sure the foal is breathing. – If the foal is not breathing clear mucus away from his nose with a suction bulb. Vigorous rubbing with dry towels can provide tactile stimulation and initiate breathing. You can even try positioning him so that he's sitting on his chest and his head and chin is resting on the ground, allowing the fluid to run out. If any of those methods won't work, give artificial respiration to get him going. Artificial respiration is done by cupping your hands firmly over his mouth and nose and breathing into his one nostril steadily and gently, letting his chest rise, then fall, and then breathing in again. Keep going until he can breathe on his own.

2. Disinfect the foal's umbilical stump. Generally, an iodine preparation is used for this procedure.

3. Make sure the foal receives colostrum soon after birth. It is important that he nurse within the first two or three hours of birth, and get an adequate amount of colostrum in the first six hours-to get the most benefit from its antibodies. If the foal is weak and unable to suck, you may have to feed him by syringe. With most weak foals it is beneficial to syringe milk into the mouth, rather than use a tube, just to keep their swallow reflex going.

4. Make sure the foal passes the meconium (first faeces). Indications that this has not occurred are signs of straining, tail switching and excessive thrashing or rolling. Certain foals may exhibit these signs 4 or 5 hours after foaling, but they are more commonly observed 12 to 24 hours after birth. Many foals with such abdominal pain will throw themselves down and lie on their backs.

5. Check that the foal's eyelids and lashes are turned outward. Occasionally the newborn foal's eyelids and lashes are turned in toward the eye rather than turned out as normal. This is a condition called entropion and causes tearing and irritation of the eye. If your foal has entropion, gently roll the eyelid out and consult your veterinarian for the proper eye ointment or treatment that you can perform.

6. Check for any limb deformities - Many foals have limb weaknesses or angular deformities at birth. These include knuckling over at the fetlock joint, weak pasterns in which the back of the fetlock touches the ground; knock knees, and crooked legs. Many of these conditions correct themselves with exercise. If your foal is born with less than straight legs, your veterinarian can assess the situation and recommend a treatment.

7. Check for hernias (defects in the body wall that allow part of the intestines to protrude under the skin). Hernias occur most frequently at the naval and scrotal areas. Small hernias often correct themselves with time, and larger hernias may require surgical correction. Again, this is a situation that your veterinarian should assess and treat.

8. Make sure the mare expels the afterbirth and check it for completeness.

9. Check the mare for several days after foaling for any sign of reproductive tract infection.

10. Treat foal’s constipation or diarrhea promptly - mild diarrhea is common in older foals (1 to 2 weeks of age). This diarrhea often occurs during the mare's foal heat (7 to 9 days after foaling) and is commonly termed "foal heat scours

Different Ideas

Imprinting Your Foal

Collated by Sheryl Collins Imprinting is where a newly born foal is handled to get the foal used to interacting with, and eliminating any anxiety or fear of people, and in more extreme cases to desensitize it to things that will be done in the future eg clipped, haltered.

Foal imprinting needs to happen in the first two hours as expert’s claim that is when the foal learns about 80% of the things it needs for survival.

Imprinting can range from The foal is gently rubbed from head to tail, including the ears and inside the nose and mouth. The feet are handled and patted on the soles and is often done before the foal is allowed to get up and nurse or the mare has a chance to clean the foal herself and bond with it.

To the more extreme Rubbing them all over with crinkly plastic, using small bladeless clipper around their head and ears, squeezing them around the girth, and putting a foal halter on and off them several times.

Done well imprinting will rid the foal of any fear of you as a predator so that they will trust you and not run away from you or panic if you need to handle them eg file hooves, take temperature.

As with any handling done improperly the imprinting process can do more harm than good. For example people worrying a mare so that they can be sure they are present when the foal is born.

Those who do not agree with imprinting believe • You should let the mare foal in peace and only interfere if there is a problem. • Allow the mare to nuzzle and clean the foal so they can bond. • Once the foal is up and nursing, if your mare will tolerate it, then you can go over and

touch and rub the foal, but don’t overdo it.

Alternative

• They believe a positive human-mare relationship makes foals more confident both towards the mare’s handler and other humans. Therefore the foal will learn from its dam’s positive (stress free) contact with humans at an early age and this could be incorporated in early handling programmes.

• That softly brushing and feeding dams in front of their few days old foals will strongly influence the development of human-foal relationships

• This procedure is simple, takes little time and can easily be applied to any dam–foal pair and presents no risks of disrupting mare–foal bonds as it is not intrusive.

Health Notes Equine Parasitology –Latest Recommendations Emily Ensor BSc, BVSc and WP&CS member The following article is only for educational purposes; please contact your own veterinarian for advice regarding your own Welsh ponies and cobs. Over the last 40 years there has been no appreciable change in the method of control of internal parasites in horses, despite a shift in worm species that cause the major problems (i.e. large strongyles [1960’s] to small strongyles [2000’s]), and the development of significant drench resistance in certain worm species. Research has pinpointed a massive difference in individual susceptibility to internal parasite infections. Blanket treatment of the herd is no longer the preferred method of treating horses for worms. Also there has been realisation that frequent drench treatments are not required to keep horses healthy. The exception is young horses under 3 years of age as this age group is more at risk of clinical parasitism. In New Zealand there seems to have been a proliferation in horse drenches with multiple active ingredients to combat drench resistance, rather than focusing on other methods to control the parasite populations. Contrary to popular belief, there is no scientific evidence to show that frequent rotation slows drench resistance. We are at a point now, that resistance is undoubtedly becoming widespread and treating for parasites with an effective drench will become a major problem. It is up to the individual horse owner to take some responsibility and set up a parasite control program that is sustainable. The main goal of parasite control is to limit infections, so that the horses are healthy and clinical illness will not develop. It is important to note that the population of parasites will never be eliminated from the horse population, largely due to environmental contamination and also species such as small strongyles, which encyst (burrow) in the gut wall for up to 2 &1/2 years. It has been shown that horses stabled for extended lengths of time, will again build up worm counts as time goes on, due to the excystment (release from the gut wall into the lumen) of small strongyles which then become reproductively active. The larval stages also are the stages which seem to cause the most damage, but many drenches are ineffective against these stages. Treatments that are effective against adult stages of worms are of benefit primarily to reduce environmental contamination. However this drench treatment needs to be timed properly so that it occurs at the time of the year, when the most benefit is achieved. The goals of parasite control are to reduce the risk of disease from parasites, control parasite shedding and maintain the use of drugs which actually kill the parasites. Terms to essential understanding parasitology as a horse owner include:

1. Anthelmintic (drench) resistance. Resistance basically means the worm has survived a drench treatment that would normally kill that species and stage of the parasite. This is an inherited trait in the worm population, controlled by genes and is passed from generation to generation. Once genes controlling resistance are present, the worms will not revert back to a drench susceptible state.

Page 16: WELSH PONY & COB SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND...5 Council News 22 Ponies & Cobs for Sale 6 Newsletter Notes 23 New Foal 7 Website Notes 23 Show Advertisements 8 Registration Officer Notes

14

2. Parasite refugia. This is the population of worms, either in the horse or on pasture that escapes selection with the drench at the time of treatment i.e. in pasture, in untreated individuals, worm species not affected by a particular drench, and in some cases, parasites such as encysted small strongyles (exist for a period of time in the gut wall in a protective cyst). The refugia provide a dilution effect as they have not been exposed to the drench, and therefore transfer some susceptibility to the next generation of parasites.

3. Faecal Egg Counts (FEC). Faecal egg counts measure the worm eggs per gram in faeces. Faecal egg counts are not entirely accurate; HOWEVER they give the best indication at the present time of the parasite population in the horse. Limitations include -not detecting small strongyle burdens, larval stages of some species, and will not reflect the total adult large strongyle or ascarid burdens. Pinworm eggs are usually missed due to the eggs being attached to the anus, and tapeworm shedding is intermittent so burdens can be under estimated. However, faecal egg counts are useful for determining which worm species are present , and are also essential for determining the effectiveness of any drenches used (faecal egg count reduction test – see below). FEC surveillance is essential to properly develop and monitor any parasite program in horses.

4. Faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). This checks the efficacy of the drench by sampling the manure with a faecal egg count prior to, and then 14 days following drenching. A calculation is carried out to assess the percentage of worms killed by the drench. The value of < 95% strongly suggests resistance. This drench test should be carried out no sooner than 8 weeks after the previous drenching (12 weeks if moxidectin used).

5. Egg reappearance period (ERP). This is the amount of time it takes for the worms to start producing eggs, after a drench treatment. A shortened ERP suggests resistance is developing. ERP naturally differ between drenches, examples include (assuming no resistance is present) moxidectin having a long ERP(16-22 weeks) and fenbendazole having a shortened ERP(6 weeks).

6. Egg shedding potential. One crucial part of this is to determine the egg shedding potential of your horses. This can be done by measuring the faecal egg counts a minimum of 4 weeks after the ERP for the particular drug used and determining which of your herd members do in fact produce the largest numbers of eggs. Usually there are 20% of horses in a herd which will be the main egg producers (i.e. produce 80% of the eggs), despite usually looking well and having no outward signs of parasitism. These high shedding horses should be targeted in your drench program. Horses seem to generally remain high or low shedders throughout their lifetime.

Methods of Parasite Control Environment Strongyle eggs are found in manure piles, which then hatch if the environmental conditions allow, and then they move the pasture where they are eaten by the horses. Removing any manure before the larvae hatch (< 7 days in good weather) is the ultimate way of reducing environmental contamination.

The old idea of resting the pasture for several months does not necessarily reduce environmental contamination, as larvae can live for surprisingly long periods of time, whether hot (larvae can last several weeks even if very hot) or cold (can last up to 9 months even with snow cover). NZ has a temperate environment so is unlikely to fall into the two extremes that do reduce pasture contamination. However pastures cannot be expected to remain infective with strongyles longer than a year if not grazed by horses. Ensure the stocking rate is low, as increasing stocking rates obviously will increase parasite burdens. It is important to focus drench treatments to periods when the larvae development is at its peak (spring and autumn). This will reduce pasture contamination. Ensure there is adequate refugia (see above) is present to reduce the selection for anthelmintic resistance. Avoid treatment of strongyles (unless necessary)in cold winter months, and summer months if very hot as refugia will be minimal, and treatment will undoubtedly select for drench resistance. Using the horse paddocks for hay or silage production, or grazing ruminants will aid in reducing environmental contamination. Harrowing has in the past been a method to break up the faecal piles to reduce the survivability of the larvae. However in NZ’s temperate climate, harrowing will enhance the spread of the larvae, and therefore infectivity of the pasture. Mowing the roughs can be used, but only if the pastures are not grazed again within the same season. An easier and more reliable method of controlling larvae in these roughs is using ruminants to graze the paddocks. Pasture cultivation and re-sowing is an excellent method of reducing larval contamination in pastures, and is an excellent method of allowing young horses on new, quality pasture that has very low parasite contamination.

Note that some worm species such as ascarids (roundworms) have very persistent eggs and have been known to survive in favourable environments for up to 5 years. Along with pinworms, these species are found in the environment (i.e. stalls, rails etc), not necessarily in the pasture. Alternative remedies. Unless there is scientific evidence that these products work, do not rely on them for parasite control. Remember that any non- drug product can make all sorts of label claims, as they do not require approval for marketing. Anthelmintics [Drenches] There are several different classes of drugs used for drenches that have their own method of action. They are sold as either single compound or combination drenches. The most common classes of drenches available in NZ include the macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin, moxidectin, abamectin etc), benzimidazoles (fenbendazoles, oxibendazole, oxibendazole etc), tetrahydropyrimidines (pyrantel pamoate and pyrantel tartrate), heterocyclic compound (piperazine) and isoquinolone (praziquantel).

WORM SPECIES

Horse worm species include:

Large strongyles ( e.g. Strongylus vulgaris, Strongylus edentates, Strongylus equinus, Triodontophorus spp), Small strongyles or cyathostomins (large number of species), roundworms or ascarids (i.e. Parascaris equorum), pinworms (i.e.Oxyuris equi), tapeworms (i.e.Anoplocephala perfoliata), Strongyloides (Strongyloides westeri), lungworms (Dictyocaulus arnfieldi), stomach worm (Trichostrongylus axei), bots (Gasterophilus spp.) The most pathogenic (dangerous) worms nowadays are small strongyles and ascarids, however any worm is potentially a problem in horses that are not healthy.

Large Strongyles

Small Strongyles

Bot Tapeworms

TREATMENT PROTOCOLS Always remember these are recommendations, and you will have to change your treatment program, with veterinary advice, to suit your own needs and situation.

Foals, Weanlings and Yearlings. There is little justification of worming mares just prior to foaling, especially if treated with a macrocyclic lactone (“ –mectin”) drench that spring. The worm species that the pre foaling drench targets is Strongyloides westeri , which has become uncommon, is not a serious pathogen, and the foals or treated mares can still acquire infections from the surrounding environment.

Routine drenching of foals at 1-2 weeks of age is also discouraged. Selective treatment based on FEC (i.e. treating those that appear to be high shedders) should not be used in this age group, due to the immune system being under developed and also the pathogenicity of some species in young stock.

Therefore worm at 2-3 months of age, and a benzimidazole drug is recommended as it kills ascarids (major pathogen in this age group). Repeat at approximately 6 months of age. At weaning a FEC is recommended to check what species of worms are present, and therefore determine which drench to use. Always turn the recently weaned foals out onto pasture with the lowest environmental contamination. Further treatments should be at 9 and 12 months of age, and treatment should be targeting strongyles and at least one of the treatments should include a tapeworm effective drench (should include praziquantel).

Perform a FECRT at least once a year, and yearlings and two year olds should always be considered as ‘ high shedders’ and treated as such (i.e. receive 3-4 treatments per year with drenches KNOWN to be effective).

Mature Horses. Depending upon climatic conditions, 1-2 treatments per year are sufficient to treat large strongyles, but also focus on the small strongyle group at least once a year, especially when the burden is likely to be at its highest (usually spring and autumn in NZ) with moxidectin or a 5 day course of panacur if no resistance issues exist. Occasionally treatment (usually when given in winter) with a macrocyclic lactone that has only effective against luminal parasites (e.g. ivermectin, abamectin ) can stimulate a mass emergence of the encysted small

17

strongyles, leading to a serious and potentially fatal disease recognised as larval cyathostominosis.

Include drugs that are efficacious towards bots (macrocyclic lactones) and tapeworms (praziquantel) at least once a year.

A FECRT should be used at least every 3 years to evaluate effectiveness, but remember this can be done more frequently.

Basic biannual drench treatments should be carried out for all horses. All additional treatments should be aimed solely at the high egg producers only, as a method of reducing environmental contamination. Use drenches during seasons of peak transmission (i.e. spring and autumn).

New Arrivals. The gold standard approach would be to carry out a FEC to determine egg counts and then drench. Perform a FECRT prior to turning out with resident horses. This allows you to assess any drench resistance issues in the new horse prior to entering the herd.

Note: Any horse showing evidence of parasitism at times of the year when worming is not usually recommended, should be treated.

IMPORTANT KEY POINTS The 10 parasite control commandments are (Reinemeyer and Nielsen, 2013), which change some old methodology in parasite control:

1. Don’t use an anthelmintic preparation without knowing its efficacy against the intended parasite population i.e. use the drench families wisely.

2. Don’t treat at frequent fixed intervals year –round e.g. eight weekly treatments are not recommended, even in young stock.

3. Don’t rotate blindly between drugs. This will select for drench resistance. Use FECRT for evaluation of effectiveness. Bear in mind drug resistance has been seen in strongyles (pyrantel, fenbendazole, oxibendazole, some emergence of ivermectin and moxidectin resistance appearing in Kentucky, US) and also ascarids (ivermectin and moxidectin) and anecdotally in pinworms (ivermectin).

4. Don’t treat adult horses during the season when environmental translation is minimal (e.g summer and winter), unless there is a clear clinical reason to do so.

5. Don’t treat the entire herd just prior to a move to clean pasture. This will enhance the worm’s ability to select for resistance.

6. Don’t treat pregnant mares just prior to foaling (explanation above).

7. Don’t treat at first frost, as this is generally unnecessary and could even trigger the serious disease syndrome larval cyathostominosis.

8. Don’t intentionally under or over-dose any drench treatment. Try and use a weigh tape for dosing and be careful when dosing foals and yearlings (especially with drugs such as moxidectin, which has a low toxicity threshold).

9. Don’t use anthelmintic formulations that are not labelled for horses, or administer them by a route that is inconsistent with label directions.

10. Don’t use one standard treatment program for all horses in a stable/herd. Continued treatment of low shedder horses hastens drench resistance.

If you are really interested in reading about parasite control in horses, two leading parasitologists Craig Reinemeyer and Martin Nielsen have recently published a book called “Handbook of Equine Parasite Control”. It is aimed at veterinarians but is a comprehensive overview of all the latest research and ideas about parasite control.

The Hawker Legacy Explained One Man’s Determination

The inception and confirmation of Welsh Cobs in New Zealand is one which has been spasmodic yet determined. The determination held initially by a few but now held by many has seen Welsh Cobs infiltrate New Zealand equestrian circles as breeders continue to build on a foundation cast from the year 1916.

For Ron Hawker his determination to find a Welsh Cob stallion took on an 18 month search to find a Cob, not too heavy but not too light, carrying a classic 'Welsh head' with excellent conformation and temperament. A cob which Hawker hoped would complement and improve New Zealand saddle ponies of the time.

It was in Gloucestershire UK that this elusive search was satisfied when Hawker purchased the 5yr black stallion Hewid Dafydd from the yard of Miss Ann Wheatcroft. Dafydd hailed from successful bloodlines, his sire Cahn Dafvdd was himself a Royal Welsh Winner along with his sire Mathrafal Dafydd's dam Chancerie Polly came from a strong female line where she has left a legacy of champions in her sons at Hewid such as Hewid Lyn (exp Germany) and Hewid Cardi. Dafydd was no exception to his pedigree, he was about to prove his ability to New Zealand as a very pre potent sire and realise Hawkers breeding ambitions.

It was on board the chartered vessel the Dona Clausen that Hewid Dafydd began the long journey to Australia where he would then be freighted on to an expectant Hawker who awaited his arrival at his Southbrook property in Rangiora New Zealand. When the Dona Clausen left the coast of Britain it was carrying 165 horses, many heading to Australia with some like Dafydd continuing on to New Zealand. During the voyage an outbreak of the highly contagious strangles spread through the ship, having infected some of the New Zealand consignment, Dafydd quarantined in Wellington for a further three weeks until he could resume his journey to Southbrook.

Despite his long and eventful journey from Britain, Dafydd had arrived unaffected at Southbrook where Hawker commented on how Dafydd had arrived in beautiful condition and had exceeded his expectations. Hawkers determination had paid off, Dafydd was well patronised by breeders in New Zealand and testament to his temperament was regularly exercised by a fifteen year old girl from Christchurch.

However Hawkers determination was not fulfilled, his desire to breed Welsh Cobs would not be completed until a suitable mare was sourced for his much admired stallion. His search once again lead him to the yard of Miss Ann Wheatcroft's, where he selected the well framed mare, Broughton Gay Girl complete with four white socks and a blaze, a pre requisite of Hawkers, who was in foal to the Royal Welsh winning stallion Llanarth Brummel.

Duly Gay Girl produced a colt foal at Southbrook for Hawker named Woodlin Beau Brummel, it was Woodlin's first generation of Welsh Cobs but sadly for Hawker it was to be his first and last as he finally succumbed to failing health and he passed away on the 25th June 1976. Having fulfilled the determination Hawker saw but only a glimpse of the profound effect his cobs would have on a struggling cob population of the time and through to the pedigrees of today.

In a letter from Hawkers Solicitor, Ronaldson, Wylie & Averill, Hawker had secured the future of his Welsh Cobs; "I give and bequeath clear of all duties my imported purebred Welsh Cob Ponies to the NZ Welsh Pony And Cob Society (incorporated) to dispose of in it's discretion for the benefit of the breed in New Zealand with the desire that such ponies continue to be used for breeding purposes" Hawkers last message encapsulated his determination for Welsh Cobs to be a vibrant material in the fabric of New Zealand's equestrian circles, his

Page 22: WELSH PONY & COB SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND...5 Council News 22 Ponies & Cobs for Sale 6 Newsletter Notes 23 New Foal 7 Website Notes 23 Show Advertisements 8 Registration Officer Notes

20

results are in the many pedigrees of Cobs in New Zealand that host the names; Hewid Dafydd, Broughton Gay Girl, Woodlin Raonull, Woodlin Beau Brummel and Woodlin Cyntaf.

In February 1979 both Dafydd and Gay Girl were transferred from the ownership of the late W.R. Hawker to the Welsh Pony and Cob Society as stipulated in Hawker's will. Hawker's beloved cobs were leased to breeders within the society where they continued to cement the small but ever increasing foundations of Cobs in New Zealand. It was in this time that cob populations evolved such as at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve where all the pedigrees of the cobs hosted Hawkers imported cobs.

However it was not to be the last of the transfers that Hawker's cobs would undergo and in the best interests of the cobs and the society, both Dafydd and Gay Girl were sold to Mr and Mrs M V Silke of the Maplepark stud in Richmond in May 1980. The resulting monies from the sale of both Dafydd and Gay Girl along with their sons Woodlin Raonull (sold to Mrs I. Mc Intyre & George Eaton) and Woodlin Beau Brummel (sold to Mr and Mrs E R Moore & Mr and Mrs R L Cork) were placed in an account now known as the Hawker account.

Since the sale in 1980 the money has been acquiring interest, creating a sum of money which has enabled our memberships to remain low and in recent times helped to fund the printing of our stud books. It is viewed as a safeguard for not only the society but also its members. Ron Hawker had a determination, a determination for the betterment of ponies and cobs, it was his hope that his cobs would help improve and impact on New Zealand, his determination paid off, his cobs stabilised a breed.

Just like Dafydd's father, Cahn Dafydd and grandfather, Mathrafal who were both purchased at 18 years old by the Fronarth Stud, Dafydd was to appear in the transfers for one last time at the same age of 18. The transfer to Miss J C Allston of Waterford farm in Victoria Australia was a stroke of luck for Waterford farms as purchasers from the UK were keen to secure Dafydd back in Britain. Both he and Gay Girl continued Hawker's desire in Australia, to remain breeding and producing ponies and cobs of excellent type and temperament. Hawker's determination is instilled in the medallions presented annually to the best cob on the grounds at their respective shows; it is an honour and a reminder of one man’s determination to breed Welsh Cobs in New Zealand.

I leave you with an excerpt from the 1994 Australian journal, written by Miss Allston. "In 1991 Hewid Dafydd was laid to rest with a cluster of Daffodils planted over his grave-a tribute so befitting a true son of Wales ... So it was a sad day in August 1991, when after a short series of strokes, I had to make an awful decision to have him put to rest. In any Cob person's life, one animal seems to endear itself as the favourite. Although Daf was certainly that for me, I endeavoured to share him with others. After all we are but mere custodians for the future generations of all cobs. Now, when I look at his grave overlooking the hills, I still think of him.

Every daffodil planted over his grave represents one of his progeny sired in Australia-they will remain untouched to naturally reproduce themselves each year. So you see, at least each spring I know that there is life hereafter-and he is still part of it-and for that I am grateful. (Clair Allston)

Code of Practice for the Welfare of Welsh Ponies and Cobs

The following are relevant excerpts taken from the Code of Practice put out by Welsh Pony and Cob Society (Wales) Responsibility for an animal includes having an understanding of the specific health and welfare needs of the animal and having the appropriate knowledge and skills to care for the animal. Those responsible for animals will also have to comply with the legislation and should be aware of the appropriate Code of Practice. They should also know when to seek advice and help and who to approach. Owning and caring for a horse is great fun and very rewarding, but it is also a big responsibility. Before buying a horse, potential owners need to consider a number of important issues to ensure that they will be able to meet their duty of care towards the horse. Issues that should be considered prior to acquiring a horse include:

• Taking a horse on a short-term or long-term loan. The responsibilities and ongoing costs of loaning a horse will be the same as owning a horse.

• The cost of keeping a horse. The purchase cost of a horse may be minimal compared to the ongoing costs. The ongoing costs will vary depending on the needs of the individual horse, where it is kept and what it is used for. Potential owners should draw up a budget based on their own circumstances to determine whether the ongoing costs are affordable. You should consider costs such as feeding, bedding, stable and pasture, worming, veterinary fees (for both routine and emergency care), farriery etc. You should consider insuring your horse in case of unexpected health problems.

• The type of horse that is most appropriate. It is important to find the right animal when purchasing a horse as this can prevent many problems in the future. You should consider factors such as horse age, breed, gender and intended use. It is useful to try a number of different horses prior to purchase for the purposes of comparison and the advice of an experienced horseperson should always be sought. Before purchasing a horse you are advices to have it examined by an independent veterinary surgeon.

• Your skills and experience. You should consider how much experience you have and whether you have the skills and knowledge to care for a horse properly. Consideration should be given to gaining prior experience with horses via riding stables or through undertaking voluntary work.

• Contingency plans in case of emergency. A potential owner needs to consider what contingency plans they should have in place in case of emergency, for example: the provision for stabling and transport should emergency veterinary treatment be required; having the means to isolate a horse if necessary; alternative arrangements for the care of the horse should the keeper become incapacitated for any reason. These contingency arrangements should be reviewed when there is any change in the owner’s, keeper’s or horse’s circumstances. The needs of horses are explained in more detail in this Code; however, an individual horse may have other needs that must be met to ensure its wellbeing. If an owner or keeper is unsure what these might be it is important that they seek advice from an appropriate source of information i.e. vet, an experienced horse professional.
