“A person’s recovery journey does not start when they stop drinking or using, it starts from when you have started to make those steps towards addressing your substance misuse problem. Preparing yourself for rehab can be a daunting time and we would like

to help you through this stage before you enter treatment with Turning Point.”

You can begin to complete this workbook before Detox and rehab to help us support you on your journey through rehab and give you

an insight into how recovery within Leigh Bank works.

Within this workbook, we will help prepare you for what life in Leigh Bank is about. You can share information in which can help us with your support plans when you begin your journey, and also make you aware of any rules and regulations within this project.

Restrictions Leigh Bank encourages independent living during your time

in rehab. However, on the first two weeks you will not be able to leave the project on your own, after that you are free to leave the project on your own to build structure and get out and about. It is compulsory that you attend al groups and key working sessions in your first 3 months unless you have discussed with staff and have permission for appointments etc.

Visiting – you will not be allowed to go on home leave from the project until after you have completed 6 weeks. For your first home leave we allow a visit of up to two nights stay. However, before you complete your first 6 weeks, we do allow you to have visitors within the project. This will be discussed with staff before any arrangements are made for your visit.

All residents are allowed to bring mobile phones into Leigh Bank. However, during groups and keyworking sessions, your mobile phones must be turned off so that they do not interfere with the program.

If you like, you can also bring a TV and music systems to use in your rooms. (Please note, if you bring a TV into the project, you do need to purchase your own TV license).

Smoking is prohibited within the building, if it was of our belief that you are smoking within the building, then actions would have to be taken as this is a breach of the house rules. We have a smoking area located at the back of the house.

The Program

Learn and progress on basic life skills – residents will work together on a rota each week to cook and will take part in different chores around the house. This will include cooking; cleaning up the house, emptying the bins, laundry and also in the summer time there will be a bit of gardening.

Keyworking - upon arrival you will be allocated a keyworker. Your keyworker is there to support you through your recovery and will create a support plan for your stay here and help meet all of your needs. Our highly qualified trained staff will work with you on your life stories, goals and may also make referrals to other support agencies for you if needed. Other members off the staff team will also support you whenever you need someone to talk to.

Support with benefits – whilst you are in rehab, we will provide support with applying for benefits, registering you with a GP and any other support services that you may require.

Disabilities– the project is accessible to people with any disability.

Recovery diary – you will be supplied with a recovery diary where you can write down any thoughts and feelings you experience whilst in rehab. You can also bring this to your keyworking sessions to go over any concerns with your keyworker.

Weekly timetables – weekly timetables are provided to keep structure to the week which will make service users aware of when groups, keyworking and alternative therapies are. In the Monday morning goal setting group, we work

Page 7: Wellbeing Cloud | Turning Point - What is …wellbeing.turning-point.co.uk/residential/wp-content/... · Web viewYour keyworker is there to support you through your recovery and will

through your individual timetable which will allow you to build daily structure around the program.

Before arrival into Leigh Bank, service users must have gone through a detox if they are currently still using substances. If on arrival to the project, it is believed that service user is under the influence, they will be asked to leave.

What is detoxification?“Detoxification” or 'detox' involves taking a short course of a medicine which helps to prevent withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking alcohol or taking drugs. The most commonly used medicine for Detox is chlordiazepoxide. This is a type of Benzodiazepine

Some people manage their detox quite easily, whilst others find it more difficult. You can expect to:

Feel quite nervous or anxious for a few days. Have some difficulty with sleeping Have some withdrawal symptoms.

The medication used for detox does not make you stop using substances. You need determination to stop. The medication simply helps you to feel better whilst your body readjusts to not having substances. Even after the period of Detox you may still have some craving for your substance. So you will still need willpower and coping strategies for when you feel tempted to drink or take drugs.

This is where rehab continues the journey to recovery…..

During rehab you will have both one to one and group sessions to support you with coping mechanisms and allow you to open up and deal with your past issues that you may have never dealt with before. Rehab will introduce you to change, help guide you through recovery and assist in developing life skills that will help you when you leave the project and start a new substance free life.

A drinks diary is a great way of keeping track of how much alcohol you may or may not drink. By keeping a drinks diary we can help you to monitor your alcohol intake and work towards reducing to safe levels.

22

Page 23: Wellbeing Cloud | Turning Point - What is …wellbeing.turning-point.co.uk/residential/wp-content/... · Web viewYour keyworker is there to support you through your recovery and will

1. Pre contemplation (why bother?)

2. Contemplation (partly want to change)

3. Decision (deciding to change)

4. Active change (changing behaviour)

5. Maintenance (keeping it going)

6. Relapse (Return to pre-contemplative behaviour)What you must do before admission

In order to help you prepare for your admission into Leigh Bank, here are a few things to be aware of.

23

Page 24: Wellbeing Cloud | Turning Point - What is …wellbeing.turning-point.co.uk/residential/wp-content/... · Web viewYour keyworker is there to support you through your recovery and will

1. Please ensure that you have at least 14 days medication with you as we have to register you with a doctor first, which can take up to a week for you get an appointment.

2. Upon coming to Leigh Bank you will be expected to pay rent contributions, this varies according to your financial assessment; it is worth checking to see if you have been financially assessed with your Care Manager before admission, to avoid any problems when you enter Leigh Bank.

3. We will expect for you to begin paying rent contributions straight away, in order to ensure that you have sufficient funds to do so please ensure that your benefits are all sorted. Guidelines are as below: If you are on job seekers allowance a new claim must be

put in for Employment and Support Allowance as you are unable to work whilst in rehab as of the date you plan to come to us.

If you are on Employment and Support Allowance please contact the DWP and explain that as of your planned admission date your new address.

4. If you are on Disability Living Allowance you must make them aware that you are about to enter rehab, as the Care Component will be put on hold as you will no longer be receiving care in the community, you will be living in Residential Rehabilitation, if you fail to inform the DWP you are committing fraud and may face legal tribunal. Please note your mobility component should not be affected, however it is worth checking this out too.

5. If you are claiming Housing Benefit for a home address and plan to return there after rehab, please make the local authority dealing with your claim aware that you will be out of the home for 3-6 months or however long you plan to be away. The reason for this is because if you are claiming housing benefit to an address that you are not actually residing in you may be subject to fraudulent behaviour and may run the risk of losing your house, it is worth looking into the legal obligations before coming to rehab as we do not want you becoming homeless due to not making the authorities aware

24

6. If you plan to bring a television with you, please ensure that you have a TV Licence addressed to this property, we are not liable for any room that does not hold a licence and if you chose not to get one you do so at your own risk.
