Welding (W) Manufacturing Skilled and Technical Sciences Contests Contest Information State Qualifying Exam: Yes National Contest: Yes Participation: Individual Contest Description Through a series of stations, competitors are tested on various aspects of welding, including measuring weld replicas, Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW). Competitors complete a steel project and weld an aluminum project in various positions using a variety of filler metals. Tasks To Be Evaluated The contestant will preform SMAW, GMAW, OFC, and Layout at the contest. The weld size, location of welds, and the overall fit up of the project will be judged. The contestant will need to work from blue prints to layout and put the project together. The print will have weld synbols on it to define what process and weld size will need to placed and at which location. Safety is a #1 concern for us as the student works and if we see that something is not safe or to standard shop practice we will warn the student and if needed take points off for this. The contest is broken up into (3) timed sections that allow enough time to complete the project. If there are equipment issues or other problems the Contest Supervisor will determine if additional time will be allotted. Clothing Requirement National Requirement: Official SkillsUSA khaki work shirt and pants (both the shirt and pants must be 100 percent cotton); black, brown or tan leather high-top work boots (no shoes of any kind, leather or otherwise); and safety glasses with side shields or goggles. o Prescription glasses can be used only if they are equipped with side shields. If not, they must be covered with goggles. State Requirement: National Requirement OR similar “like” clothing. Leather Work Boots are required. Supplies Provided by Technical Committee We will provide the materials for the contest project, welding consumables, etc. Supplies Provided by Contestant The contestant will need to provide the tools that are needed for him or her to layout the project from the blueprints, fit up the project with either the SMAW or GMAW Process. The Contestant will need to have the proper PPE(Personal Protection Equipment) to perform the following welding processes: GMAW, SMAW, and OFC. The contestants can use a 4-1/2” grinder if they have it in their toolbox.
