ESTERHAZY PALACE

Esterházy Palace ranks as the most prominent cultural monument and landmark in the Province of Burgenland.

Its origins can be traced back to a 13th-century gothic fortress which passed into the ownership of the Esterházyfamily in 1649. Under Prince Esterházy Paul I the estate was converted into a baroque castle which remained theprincipal residence and centre of administration of the family for over 300 years.

The Esterházy family historical significance as the hub of social, cultural and political affairs in the formerHungarian Kingdom may be ascribed to its geographical situation, forming a point of intersection betweenEastern and Western Europe.

A remarkable feature of Esterházy Palace is that it combines baroque splendour and neo-classical austerity withreminiscences of the Austrian Biedermeier style.

Its musico-historical fame is attributed to the composer Joseph Haydn and the Haydn Hall, whose acoustics areamong the finest in the world.

The lineage of the Esterházys can be traced back to the 13th century. From the 17th until the early 20th centurythe family ranked among the most influential magnate dynasties in the Hungarian Kingdom owning huge estatesthat extended from the North-East to the West of the country. The Princes Esterházy upheld an allegiance to theCrown of St. Stephen and a committed sense of loyalty to the House of Habsburg, a stance assuring them of premier positions in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and facilitating their ascent to the very heights of feudal society. Apart from their political, diplomatic and military successes, they enjoyed an outstanding reputation in the field of culture as acknowledged patrons of the arts and art collectors. They not only promoted science and visual art, but above all drama and music. This served to enhance their fame far beyond the Habsburg Empire.
