THE OPEN DOOR September 8, 2019 Volume 19, Issue 36

A Message from Pastor Kathryn Dear First Congo Family,

Many of you have been waiting and praying with me and for me these last several weeks. I am more grateful than I can express in words. I am filled with such love and admiration for you.

My time away since early August has been spent making precious memories with my family and discerning next steps for treatment and medical care. We have been waiting for results from a genotyping process, hoping we could match my particular cancer with an effective treatment. Unfortunately, the results did not offer any easy solutions or matches. I may be eligible for a clinical trial unrelated to the genotype, but that will also take time to discern.

I have been struggling to understand how I can balance ministry with the needs of my family, and this daily work of living with stage IV cancer. I have come to the painful realization that I cannot balance all of those things right now. I have decided to pursue short-term disability benefits in order to continue focusing on my family and my health. This is a difficult decision because when a pastor receives such benefits, she cannot serve her congregation. If you have experienced illness yourself or in your family, you will understand the many losses that come along with disease progression. For me, this is a deep and significant personal loss. I believe God called us to be in ministry together for so many good reasons. This feels like an unfair transition in a pastoral relationship that held real promise.

Perhaps now more than ever, I need the support and sustenance of a vibrant faith community and spiritual life. Though I will not be able to serve as your pastor, I am still a member of First Congregational and look forward to remaining a part of the church family.

Again, my words seem entirely insufficient both to this task and to my depth of feeling for all of you. Surely God’s grace will hold us all as we live into what the future holds for all of us.

Blessings and peace, Kathryn

Youth and Families Faith, fun and service.

Hooray for the Start of Church School!

Summer has flown by and we are excited to kick off the 2019-2020 program year in Church School!

This year’s theme is “Heroes of Faith,” and we will begin with a rotation focusing on the story of Moses.

In the “Moses Listens to God” rotation the children will hear the story of Moses and the Ten Commandments. The first lesson will be on September 15 and the rotation will run through October 13.

The children will learn about Moses through science, treasure hunt and storytelling workshops, as well as a workshop that focuses specifically on the Ten Commandments. As always, the children will engage in interactive lessons and will be taught by dedicated volunteer teachers.

The teachers for Rotation One are: Heather Gentile, Nancy Koehler, Jolene Scribner and Jessica Lindsay. Please thank these wonderful volunteers if you see them!

Also please consider teaching a rotation this year. Numerous vacancies exist for

the remaining rotations. Our children are delightful to work with!

Contact Colleen Berry at [email protected] if interested.

Tween Ministry The Tween Ministry that started last year under the guidance of Katie Jahnke and Colleen Berry will continue again this year for 5th and 6th grade children.

Our focus in this ministry is to offer the 5th and 6th grade students lessons that are devised for older children. The lessons are taught during Church School time and are taught each week by Colleen and Katie.

Last year the response to this program was wonderful and our attendance numbers were great. We look forward to another engaging, successful year!

Welcome New Preschool Teacher Emma Slowinski

As most of you know, our dedicated preschool teacher of 27 years, Shari Mitchell, will be unable to teach the preschool program this year due to health reasons. I announce with great pleasure (and extreme gratitude) that Emma Slowinski has volunteered to fill this role. She will be volunteering her time and talents and teaching our three and four-year old children. This is fantastic news, so take a moment to thank her if you see her!

She will be teaching the preschool class during the regular Church School time during the 8:45 AM service only. Please

plan accordingly, as there will no longer be a preschool class offered during the 10:30 AM service.

We are so blessed to have a volunteer agree to fill this important role which sets the stage for our children’s faith journey!

Mark Your Calendar for the Blessing of the Backpacks

Sunday • September 15

On September 15 during the 8:45 AM and 10:30 AM services, we will be holding a “Blessing of the Backpacks” for all students.

Plan to bring your backpacks, briefcases or tote bags and join us for this special blessing as we get set to kick off another amazing program year!
