Example Calculation for a student expected to achieve
C grades (KS2 level 4)
• Remember C is worth 4 and B- is worth 5• English 4 (C) Science Core C• Maths 4 (C) Eng. Lit C• PE B- BTEC Music C• Geography B- French C
Simple CalculationEnglish C =4 points x 2= 8 Art C =4 pointsMaths C =4 points x2 =8 Eng. Lit C = 4 pointsPE B =5 points BTEC Music C =4pointsScience Core B=5 points French C=4 points
Total 42 divide by 10
The students Attainment 8is 4.2 and as they were predicted to achieve 4 the progress 8 +0.2
So this student…..
• English and Maths No (C is not good enough)
• English Baccalaureate No• Attainment 8 4.2• Progress 8 0.2
Reporting
• English and maths will report a number• All other subjects will report an old style grade• 4a,4b,4c are subdivisions of a maths and
English grade with 4a being highest• C1,2,3 are subdivisions of all other GCSE
grades with C1 being highest.
Progress residuals will be displayed to students every data cycle
• 5 times a year• Prizes for top progress and those students
making most progress between cycles
Key issues• Before any 3 other subjects would do alongside
maths and English to make the level 2 threshold• Now students need 8 across a range of subjects• All subjects count• Moving from an F to an E is as important as a D to
a C• English Literature or Language can count for
English but both must be taken

What is the key to a stress free exam period ?
Early Preparation !
What is the key to Good Results ?
Early Preparation
!
One entry, one attempt
• No modules• All exams can only be sat once, your first
attempt counts for your Key Stage 4 attainment
Impact
• All to play for in May/June 2017• All exams in one five week period• Core Science will be entered in Year 10• Statistics may be entered in Year 10
Question number 1 from parents
How long should my son/daughter be revising for?
Simply to offer an answer
In the build up to exams, previous month Two hours / night (school day) Four hours / day (weekend) The secret is to make sure that the hours
put in are high quality and profitable.
An equally important question
How can we help plan their revision?
Using your calendar / planner
1. Add the exam dates
2. Add in key events that can not be moved e.g. Swimming club, Mum’s birthday treat etc.
3. Schedule in your revision in 30 min. spells.
4. Rotate subjects around. Focus on those that need the most improvement.
5. Plan long term. Do not try and cram it all in just before
Creating the right learning environment.
A room that is away from the drama of the rest of the family.
Could be at granny’s or a neighbour’s. Natural light / good lighting prevents
tiredness. A table / desk is actually far more
comfortable than sitting on a floor or bed.
Creating the right learning environment.
Ensure that all the right equipment is available. (pens, paper etc.)
Encourage them to have a bottle of water on the desk.
Having music on quietly can help, but not the radio or a brand new album. Certainly not TV.
You should hopefully end up with a situation like this.
An important role for parents is to ensure that their child gets the balance between quality revision, exercise and free time.
This can be achieved by being aware of their revision plan, monitoring it carefully……….And then providing small rewards as motivation.
Should parents get involved with helping their child revise ?
YES.Even if the subject is not one you are strong in, being there to ask questions, help create notes and discuss ideas can be a great help.
But be careful………
Not to go overboard by…-Telling them what or how to revise.-Undermining their confidence when things don not go well.-Or exerting too much pressure.
What is the worst type of revision?
Without doubt just sitting there reading a text or exercise book, even if you are taking notes, will have little
impact.
So what is the best type of revision?
• Practice papers• Focussed exam questions• THE QUESTIONS YOU GET WRONG• Structured note formatting with purpose• On line tests and revision aids.• Assessment for Learning – Marking your
own or your friend’s work / practice questions.
How to help at exam time.
Keep your own copy of their exam timetable and double check that they are going in at the right time on the right day.
Ensure that they leave with plenty of time.
Try to keep home routine as natural as possible.
How to help at exam time.
Make sure that they have all the right equipment. A good quality pen (gel) makes writing far neater and less tiring.
Ensure they are in full school uniform and that the mobile phone is left at home. (one beep and they will have to be removed from the exam)
In conclusion…..
Good quality preparation.

Calm and relaxed for the exams.

Homework and Revision
Rationale
• Homework used to provide an excellent opportunity for students to do coursework and draft work
• As all examinations have moved to a linear model and even in vocational qualifications coursework is limited, this is not always as relevant
• Homework does provide an opportunity to reinforce learning, revise and prevent learning loss
Homework Setting
• Homework will be set by individual teachers where the subject content is directly required for the next lesson and can be completed by all students
• Where this is not the case departments will set six week projects
• or, homework will be set electronically on one of three mediums, the homework is exam board specific, self marking and has a proven impact on outcomes
Electronic HomeworkThe Academy will monitor the completion of homework electronically but we are asking parents for their support in making sure the
work is doneStudents should spend an hour on homework per night in KS3 and two hours in KS4, more at
exam periodsStudents shouldn’t try to complete all work but complete as much across a range of subjects as
possible
