Building pathway - success story • "After high school, I became a qualified building

tradesperson, but decided to continue studies with building surveying because I wanted to push myself further in the building industry. VU's pathways meant I could build on my qualifications one step at a time. The courses were flexible and the teachers were very supportive. […]

• Early in 2012 I decided to start my own building surveying company, Vic Permits Pty Ltd. We provide services such as issuing building permits, liquor licencing assessments, bushfire assessments, mandatory inspections, building compliance audits, illegal building works resolutions and essential safety maintenance audits."

Courses studied • Certificate IV in Building, 2005

• Diploma of Building Surveying, 2006

• Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying, 2006

• Graduate Certificate in Performance-based Building & Fire

Codes, 2007

• Bachelor of Building Technology – Building Surveying, 2008

IT pathway - success story • “By taking a pathway from vocational education into

higher education I was able to get credit and fast-track my degree. I was recently hired by Victoria University under their Students as Staff program, which gives me great exposure to the industry before I graduate. Last year, I participated in the international Cisco Netriders competition, and our team came fourth out of more than 30 teams from across Australia and New Zealand”.

• Andrew Hinton won the Outstanding Vocational Student of the Year in 2012.

Courses studied

• Diploma of Information Technology, 2011

• Advanced Diploma of Information Technology (Network Security), 2012

Work-ready graduates • Professional education take place primarily in simulated workplace

environments as well as in industry and through industry and community based projects.

• Our simulated environments are state of the art, for example: – Zone Substation Simulator with majority of the funding coming from industry ($1.7M

laboratory currently being built) – IT networking Labs including latest CISCO hardware and online virtual networking

laboratory NETLAB

• In Engineering we aim at 50% delivery via Problem-Based Learning (PBL) – PBL encourages students to solve problems set in a real-world context and helps

students to develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills to graduate work-ready.

• Some engineering design units are delivered by industry

practitioners.

Work-ready graduates

• Industry accreditation and certifications – All Engineering courses are accredited by Engineers Australia (EA) or

other professional bodies

– Information Technology courses are based on International Vendor Certifications

– Diploma of Information Technology Networking is almost 100% vendor certification based and has unique combination of courses related to CISCO, Microsoft, Vmware, Red Hat, ITIL and Ehacker.

– Many teachers are industry certified.

• Competitions – Students can participate in many externally organised Competitions or

community programs such as Netriders (IT) or Formula SAE (Mechanical Engineering)

The Engineers without Borders– Case study

The Engineers without Borders (EWB) challenge is an Australasian design program for first-year university students that provides students with the opportunity to learn about design, sustainable development, teamwork and communication, while contributing towards real international development projects.

2014 Project Declining water quality, hygiene and sanitation have become a global issue of concern. Nepal Water for Health (NEWAH) is a non-governmental organisation in Nepal working towards clean drinking water, hygiene promotion and sanitation for the local community.

Design Area 1 – Housing: Projects on household ventilation systems, weather proofing homes and lighting for households

………..

Design Area 7 - Climate Change: Water source protection, food security, disaster preparedness and response, fly and mosquito management, organic pesticides and agriculture

Two solutions will be submitted to EWB later this year.

Industry Projects – success story • " […] Becoming a student mentor helped my all-

round development and I want to continue providing support to new graduates in the future.

• As part of my final year project, I developed two remote observatories at West Preston and Avoca, which are remotely accessible from the Ballarat Observatory. The installations stream images of the night sky so that visitors can still see the stars on a cloudy night by utilising the telescopes at these locations.

• In my final year, I applied for the graduate program at Sinclair Knight Merz, an engineering consultancy. I am now a graduate security consultant in their Building and Infrastructure department.“

Courses studied • Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic

Engineering), 2013

Future Job - Engineers Case study

The Engineering Profession – A statistical overview 2011, by the Acting Chief Executive of Engineers Australia, Rupert Grayston

“The domestic supply of new engineering graduates has not been able to keep pace with increases in the demand for engineers for many years”.

“For well over a decade the number of domestic engineering graduates flat-lined at around 5000 a year and it is only recently that we have seen a modest increase to about 6000 per year”.

“Currently there is a high reliance on migrant engineers to try to keep up with demand but as other economies develop, their demand for engineers will increase and Australia may find itself competing for and not securing the engineering skills that are currently more freely available from overseas”.

Page 18: WELCOME TO VICTORIA UNIVERSITY...Netriders competition, and our team came fourth out of more than 30 teams from across Australia and New Zealand _. • Andrew Hinton won the Outstanding

Future Job - Engineers Case study

“The statistical report shows that in 2010, over 52 percent of the Australian engineering labour force was born overseas compared to 36 per cent for comparable non-engineering skills and 27 per cent in the overall labour force.”

“All indicators show that the engineering sector will continue to experience growth, particularly in engineering construction associated with major public infrastructure projects and in the resources industries.”

“It remains of great concern that there is no real end in sight to delivering an adequate engineering skills base across Australia to match demands for maintenance of existing infrastructure, increasing population and economic expansion.”

“Part of the longer-term solution is to focus on the primary and secondary classrooms where students need to be both drawn to an engineering career, and supported with the skills sets of maths and science subjects, to dramatically increase our domestic engineering numbers.”

“Also, there is a need to encourage a far greater participation by females into the profession where only about 10 percent are female.”
