Traceability
Quality Problems:• In the recent years, EU has rejected many shrimp
consignments from Bangladesh being the products were found to have metabolites of banned nitrofurans and other hazardous chemicals contaminants.
• Nitrofuran and its metabolites detected specially in the fresh water prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) during recent past years
• This incidence seriously affected the image of Bangladesh frozen foods and threatened up growing international export market
• Currently shrimp export from Bangladesh to EU countries is facing a number of key issues and constrains, among which traceability is the most important
BANNING OF NITROFURAN DRUGS
• A. Furaltadone - banned in 1993• B. Nitrofurantoin - banned in
1993• C. Nitrofurazone - banned in 1993• D. Furazolidone - banned in 1995

TraceabilityTraceability means the ability to trace and follow a food,
feed, food-producing animal or substance intended to be, or expected to be incorporated into a food or feed, through all stages of production, processing and distribution
Legal requirements:EC regulation 178/2002 stresses establishing traceability
system in all steps of food production, processing and distributions.
Any country willing to export fish products into EU must meet traceability requirements as stated in EU regulation
Accordingly, Traceability has been adopted as food safety protocols in the amended Fish Inspection and Quality Control rules, 2008.
Needed maintaining one step down (receiving end) and one step up (delivery end) traceability records
Started with registration of shrimp ghers and formulation of gher area coding system.
Follow-up trial conducted in Cox’s Bazar with processors (Koliarchar Sea Foods) supplier, and depot owners and farmers of Ukhiya pilot to test the traceability
Follow-up trial conducted in Rampal of Bagerhat with processors (Fresh Foods Ltd) supplier, depot owners and farmers
Follow-up trial conducted on traceability of Modern Sea Foods Ltd., Khulna processors, supplier, depot owners and farmers

Government Role
GOB approved the Traceability Framework and ordered for countrywide implementation.
About 90-95% farms were already registered.
419 DOF officials, 993 depot owners, 294 factory personnel and 23706 farmers were trained
All the shrimp processing plants started traceability system
FVO mission during their last visit acknowledged the traceability system in place
