ReadingWe use a balanced literacy program. This incorporates practices of reading and
integrates the elements of phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and
comprehension in instruction. These practices include:
Read aloud – model reading for enjoyment, fluency and strategy lessons
Shared reading – strategy lessons taught to the whole group and then practiced
in guided reading groups
Guided reading – specific small group instruction based on children’s needs
Independent reading – students practice their reading silently or with a partner
students read 25 books across the curriculum

Mathematics: My Math
Our Mathematics program takes a balanced approach that places an emphasis on POLYA’s 4 step problem solving process, conceptual understanding, and fact/computational fluency. Our units include:

• In Social Studies, students are making connections between
classroom learning and authentic world situations as required
by the new Georgia Standards of Excellence:
• Utilizing Georgia Framework Activities and S.S. Weekly
• Applying DBQ strategies to historic happenings to authenticate
events, rationalize their roots causes, and global impact
• Integrating Social Studies throughout the Reading
curriculum
