Writing Children have opportunities for differenttypes of writing daily at school.

This term we will focus on; • Correct letter formation, starting letters on the line. •Talk for Writing. • Leaving spaces between words.• Writing a full sentence. Moving onto punctuation.

•Children have opportunity to explore texts during class sessions, making predictions, retelling events, discussing characters and feelings. • Guided group reading and discussion.•Individual reading. • Blending sounds is a key focus in Phonics.

Phonics –

•Daily sessions using the Letters and Sounds programme.•We continue to use the Jolly Phonics songs and actions to support children learning a new sound.• We continue to learn the High Frequency Words and Tricky Words (Those words which cannot be sounded out correctly).• There is also individual and small group support.

This term will focus on number work • Count on and back from a given number • Count, read and write numbers.• Identify one more and one less than a given number.•Addition and subtraction – using objects and pictorial representations.• Developing number fact knowledge. • Promote independence – encouraging children to choose equipment and strategies to solve a problem. • Using mathematical language.

The Phonics Screening Check

The Year 1 Phonics Screening will take place during the week 13th – 17th June.

It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics.

What will it check?It will check that your child can:•Sound out and blend graphemes in order to read

simple words.

•Read phonically decodable one-syllable and two-syllable words, e.g. cat, sand, dentist.

•Read a selection of nonsense words which are referred to as pseudo words.

•Children will know these as ‘Alien Words’ e.g. brip, snorb.

What can you do to help your child?

• Reading to your child and listening to your child read every night.

• Continue to learn high frequency words and tricky words.

• Use numbers where possible, counting out objects, counting in groups, ordering numbers.

• Use Maths in everyday situations, ask your child to tell you the time, what will it be in one hours time?

• Encourage your child to be involved with money when shopping, using the right amount of coins.

Useful Information•PE – This is on Monday and Games on a Thursday with Mrs Oakley. Children will need trainers and track suit bottoms on this day.

•Please ensure that hair is tied back and all earrings removed on these days.

•Swimming will start next term on Tuesday mornings.

•Forest schools will continue. This is a valuable learning experience for children. This will start next term.

• Children need to bring their water bottles containing water every day.

• Please keep big bags to a minimum as we do not have room to store things that do not fit in their lockers.

• Please ensure your child has their reading book and diary with them every day.

• Homework will be given out on a Thursday and handed in on the following Wednesday.

• Children will be given spellings to learn ready to be tested the following Wednesday.
