Summer 2018 I write to you as we enter the final weeks of another busy academic year. After intensive periods of SATs/GCSEs and end of year examinations for many students, we hope the last few weeks of term have a slightly lighter feel. The Y6 residential, Y11 prom, Y6 transition days and the 5* rewards trips are perhaps the highlights before the end of term. However, as this newsletter testifies, students have access to a range of exciting learning opportunities within and outside of the classroom all-year round! As you may be aware, this newsletter will be my last as I am leaving the Trust and Hinde House 3-16 School at the end of the academic year. In total, I have spent 14 years (nearly half my career to date) at Hinde House 3-16 School; as a Deputy Head, Principal and latterly as Executive Principal of Brigantia Learning Trust. I am proud to say during this time that our school has improved immeasurably so that it is now well- regarded, over-subscribed and very effective. As a consequence, we have been able to increase our influence and become a local 2-18+ Multi Academy Trust, and help to improve other schools/colleges, and build strong local partnerships. This journey has been unique for a school in our part of Sheffield. None of this would have been possible without the work of our outstanding school leaders, teaching and support staff. They really are exceptional and always prepared to ‘go the extra mile’ for our students. However, perhaps more than anything, it is the positivity, vibrancy, tolerance and ambition shown by our students that has been our (and your) greatest success. There is much about the community of students within our school that we should celebrate… Mike Westerdale will replace me as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Trust in September 2018. He is very experienced and highly regarded, and I am sure will help take the school and Trust to the next level. Hinde House 3-16 School will continue to be led by Janice McWilliam (Primary), and by Simon Winslow - Director of Academies (Secondary) and Tammy Noone (Interim Secondary Headteacher). Anne Robson (Trust Director of Inclusion) will also continue to work across both Phases. Finally, I would like to thank parents carers for your support during my tenure and wish you all a happy summer break. The SHARP System ‘DON’T SUFFER IN SILENCE’

We believe that every child should be safe and feel safe. We work hard to support each child during the school day and we want everyone to have adults in school that they can turn to if they have a problem. However, we know that both children and adults can have worries which can seem much worse at night or times when people are alone.

If you have any problems, day or night, you can use the SHARP System; just log on to the website http://hindehouse.thesharpsystem.com to send an email into school with any worry or concern at whatever time of day or night. These e-mails will be picked up each school morning and dealt with as quickly as we can in a confidential way by Mrs Robson and the Inclusion Team.

In March, a group of fifteen Year 7 students visited Manchester Museum of Science and Industry as part of a science reward trip.

Students took part in a material science workshop where they explored the uses and implications of science in space. They used special wireless microscopes, connected to iPads to examine amazing ‘wonder materials’ used during space travel, including camel hair, aluminium foam and graphene. They were then set a creative task to design new applications and products for these materials and took part in a Dragon’s Den’s style sales-pitch. Congratulations to Hamnah, Renee, Ellie, Saif and William for their winning proto-type! After the design workshop, the students explored the rest of the museum, including the engine room power house, a textiles manufacturing demo and an exhibit about Tim Peake’s Soyuz space capsule, where they found out more about his assent and descent from space and how the capsule travels through space.

The students had a great, fun day out – they conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and were praised by the workshop leader as one of the most innovative groups he had encountered. [Miss Travis]

Year 5 children experienced a magical day at school this half term when they began their new theme topic; ‘what would it be like to live in a world with magic?’. Both classrooms have been transformed into Hogwarts’ classrooms, and children and staff dressed the part for the theme entry day.

The children began with some muggle studies (there was still editing and guided reading to do after all!) before becoming young wizards and witches, and taking part in various wonderful activities. After being sorted into houses beneath the Hinde House sorting hat, they practiced their ‘alohomora’ skills, by making flying keys to decorate the classroom. They checked on their ‘accio’, ‘crucio’ and (the bravest amongst them) ‘avada kedavra’ spells, while making their own spell books, before creating magical and fully working wands!

[The spells mentioned can all be found in the Harry Potter series of books. If you don’t know what they are or what they mean, ask a Year 5 child, or better still, read the books. You won’t regret it!]

The day was rounded off with a trip to the ‘Three Broomsticks’ for homemade butter beer before they had to return to the muggle world. The day, as well as a trip to a magical apothecary called Grimm & Co., will help stimulate their imaginations and generate some fantastic writing over the coming half term.[Miss Daniel]

Y6 Reward Trips

Before the holidays, Y6 children had a cinema trip to Meadowhall because they had worked so hard during SATs week. They went to watch Sherlock Gnomes! Y6 set off at 9:00 in the morning, then they walked to Meadowhall. When they got there, they had to wait for the cinema to open because it wasn’t time. When it finally opened, they got all of their sweets and popcorn then Miss Daniel took them downstairs towards their viewing room. When the film

started, everyone got really excited. Everyone was eating popcorn and sweets and enjoying themselves. They all enjoyed Sherlock Gnomes, then walked back to school and played outside until the end of the day. When they got their bags and coats for home time, everyone was exhausted. Everyone had an amazing time, it was a great way to celebrate all our hard work![Written by Ryan Chapman - Y6]

In Foundation Stage 2, we have been learning about the different kinds of animals we might find on a farm. To bring our learning to life, we went to visit Cannon Hall Farm in Barnsley. We found out about lots of farm animals and got to see what they look like as babies, and how they change as they grow older. We fed some of the animals in the barns and then watched what happens when a cow is milked! We also had a chance to look at and feel some

smaller animals up close. We were very impressed with how calm and still the guinea pig and the rabbit were, even with so many of us wanting to stroke them!

We came back to school with some brilliant ideas to use in our play and did some great pieces of writing about our trip. [Mrs Anglesea]

Duke of Edinburgh Practise Expedition April 2018In April, twenty-one Year 10 students set off early Saturday morning by train to complete their first Duke of Edinburgh expedition. Luckily, they all managed to negotiate Sheffield station with their huge backpacks and arrived on time at Hope Station. After I had checked their equipment and that they knew where they were going, the students eagerly set off, determined to finish their 9-mile walk as quickly as possible and set up camp for the night. The students all managed the walk without getting lost and enjoyed their time in the beautiful countryside. They arrived in Castleton in the early evening and worked together to set up their tents, cook burgers, pasta and rice, and explore the campsite. As the sun set, the students quietly talked in a group and enjoyed being outside. The next day, they were very tired but still cleaned up the campsite before setting off at speed to finish the final part of the walk. All the students looked incredibly happy when they had finished. They were really proud of themselves, as well they should be![Mrs Greenwood]

GradcoreGradcore is a social enterprise company focused on maximising the potential of students for business, universities and employment. On 13th March, their representatives came in to Secondary to do a presentation to Year 10 students on Higher Apprenticeships at University. They also carried out some psychometric testing to see what types of career the students should consider. Our students really enjoyed all the logic exercises and team activities, and found it all really useful. We hope now to roll out similar activities for all students in Years 7-11.

On the weekend of 23rd March, a number of Year 11 students had the opportunity to attend a Revision Weekend at Kingswood. The main aim of the weekend was for students to revise for their upcoming GCSE exams, as well as taking part in group activities like building buggies out of scrap and rope climbing.

What’s that? This has been a common question on ‘Wheelie Wednesday’. The answer - a cargo bike. If you’ve not seen it yet, imagine a normal bike with a bath in front of the handlebars! The cargo being car-ried is often children. The bike enables all children to experience the joy of being on a bike, the air rushing past your face and the adrenalin flowing as we bank around a corner like an F1 car! Let me know if you’d like a go. Thanks again for help-ing your children scoot, cycle, skate and ‘Heely’ to school. There are often over 100 sets of wheels parked in the MUGA!

The students were a fantastic representation of Hinde House and impressed both teachers and the Kingswood staff with their enthusiasm and teamwork. The feedback was very positive and we look forward to seeing all their hard work pay off in August!

This half term, the Y2 children have been answering the question ‘What lies beneath the deep?’

As well as researching a range of fascinating sea creatures in class, the pupils visited The Deep Aquarium in Hull where they came face to face with a huge array of aquatic life!

The children were amazed as they watched sharks swimming above their heads and were highly entertained as the penguins enjoyed their feeding time. The Deep houses a massive collection of different sea life and the children came away from the experience with a greater knowledge and understanding of what really lies beneath the deep.

During the day, each class took part in an art workshop where they also created plasticine ocean animals and sketched observational drawings of shells.

This theme has really ‘hooked’ all of the children and has given them a fantastic stimulus for writing. They have also continued to research facts about sea creatures at home and shared their learning with their friends! [Mrs Stubbs]

At the end of a long spring term, Year 5 children rounded off their topic of rivers with a walk to the source of the Porter Brook and along most of it’s length until it meets the River Sheaf. The weather was brilliant for a 10km walk, not too hot and not too cold, which was just as well because sixty children, plus staff, took public transport to achieve this feat!

The day started with a walk up the Limb Brook to Ringinglow. After passing the alpaca farm, the children headed for the source of the Porter Brook. From here, two groups walked the 6km to Endcliffe Park, observing all the features of the river along the way. They saw weirs and mill ponds, were able to see and understand how waterwheels generated power and heard how the Porter Valley once had twenty-one mill dams powering nineteen waterwheels. Did you know that at the start of the Industrial Revolution in the 1740s, Sheffield was the biggest user of water power in England and possibly all of Europe?

The walk was tiring but fun and the children had a well-deserved ice-cream before returning home...tired but happy![Miss Daniel]

In September 2017, Hinde House (Secondary Phase) began an exciting partnership with Newfield Secondary School for the year. Both schools agreed to use (P4C) Philosophy for Children. This is a strategy for discussions and dialogue.

The main P4C aims were:• Todevelopanddeepenchildren’sknowledgeand understanding around identity, equality and community• Todevelopcriticalthinkingskills,reflectionand communication• Todeveloptrust,empathy,awarenessandrespect

Our group of students taking part in the project comprised of five Y8 and five Y9 students. Since our school community is wide and diverse, this project provided an excellent opportunity for everyone involved to develop a sense of connection and awareness of global issues.

The topics we discussed were:• WhoamI?• Whoarewe?• Wheredowelive?• Howdowealllivetogether?

Scarborough

Year 10 Geographers travelled to Scarborough on 20th June to complete the first element of their GCSE Geography fieldwork. The hypothesis they were to investigate was; “The sea wall in Scarborough is completely effective at preventing the risk of coastal flooding”.

Students completed a longshore drift survey to see how powerful the sea’s erosive force was at North Bay. They then dodged the brief rain shower to walk around Marine Drive to complete further traffic and pedestrian surveys, as well as environmental quality surveys, and sketches of the new sea wall and surrounding area.

At South Bay, students spent the afternoon conducting questionnaires to visitors and local businesses to further their data sample and inform the hypothesis. There was just enough

time for everyone to enjoy some fish and chips and an ice cream before heading home.

All students who attended conducted themselves in a professional, friendly and diligent manner; a credit to themselves and the school. [Mr Mattinson]

Bee Friendly ProjectStudents in the NSC at Secondary have had a wonderful ex-perience participating in the Bee Friendly Project organised by Growtheatre.

The students are studying the importance of flowers in relation to bees as pollinators and their importance to our food supply. We visited Hinde House Primary, the Flower Estate Family Association, the Chapel and Haythorne Place Nursing Home. Permissions were sought and granted for us to place bee friendly planters in each of these locations. Students were divided into five teams, each assigned to work with representatives from each site.

At the first meeting, students were given a design brief by their clients. They then designed the planters and chose flowers based on their design brief. Clients were invited in to school for a presentation of the designs and were impressed with the designs and how the students had listened to their needs.

The planters have now been decorated and flowers delivered. The official launch day will be on 10th July in the afternoon and the community are invited to go to each of the designated loca-tions for the event where there will be fun activities for people of all ages.

It is hoped that the Bee Friendly Planter Trail, starting at Hinde House Secondary memorial, will be enjoyed by all.[Mr Ndlovu]

Halle Orchestra Visit

On Thursday, 3rd May, Years 3, 4 and 5 went on a visit to see the Halle Orchestra play at the Sheffield City Hall. We saw a performance all about the Natural World and learnt a lot about the different types of instruments involved in the orchestra. We even joined in with 1500 other children at the event to sing a song they had learnt at school.

The children had a brilliant experience and their behaviour

was impeccable - not only at the event, but in the Peace Gardens too, where we all had lunch, and on transport to and from the event. Thanks go to the staff for organising such a great opportunity for the children. Getting 180 children into town on public transport was a bit of a complex operation but completely worth it for such a great opportunity! [Mrs Thornhill]

Performing ArtsYear 9 and Year 10 Performing Arts students visited the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, to see a production of ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’; accompanied by Mr Cooke, Ms Dudley, Mr Murray, Ms Burgan and Miss Magkanioti. It was a fantastic production, and staff and students had a great time. The amazing drama skills used by the actors will help all the Performing Arts students when practic-ing for their own performance exams next year. Missed out? Look out for news of the next theatre trip next term! [Mr Cooke]

Tour de Hinde HouseThe annual cyclocross race took place in May, with children racing around the Brickworks field and trying to score points for their House Team. The grass was a little longer than normal, adding to the challenge! There was family success for Layton and Kabaine, winning the Y2 and Y4 races. Remember, the bikes are out every Wednesday morning at 8am. [Mr McDermott]

A group of children from Y4 enjoyed a residential trip to Whirlow Hall Farm. They spent three days and two nights working and living on the farm. Feeding the animals, pony riding, animal grooming and cleaning animal poo! were just a few of the jobs the children carried out. Not only did they work on the farm, they also helped to carry out household chores, including washing the pots and preparing the meals. There was also some free time for playing games and a very exciting talent show! All the children thoroughly enjoyed getting involved with all aspects of farm life.

“My favourite part was collecting the eggs!”

[Miguel, Y4FB]

“Collecting animal poo was disgusting yet fun!”

[Spencer, Y4FB]

“Pony riding was amazing!” [Uriah, Y4FB]

Outdoor LearningWith a national drive on health and fitness for our young people, over at Primary we are taking our learning outside the class-room with as much activity as we can.

After collaborating with Mr McDermott, the Y2 team planned a series of lessons which involved outdoor orienteering and using the scooters.

All the children were active, both mentally and physically, and developed the skills of collaboration and cooperation. Great fun was had by all and superb progress was made in each of the lessons. What’s not to love! We can’t wait to plan this week’s lessons and the children are so excited to continue learning in this way.[Mrs Claire Wilkinson]

Road Safety AwardsA group of students from Year 9 and the Student Council were invited to Sheffield City Hall to attend the annual Road Safety ‘Oscars’. This is a road safety video competition with students attending from all over South Yorkshire. The students took the opportunity to have their photographs taken with the four Lord Mayors present and to visit all the different activities on offer.

The awards ceremony and entertainment started; the first act being, Chinara Sokoni, Jannah Hendy, Gillian Atsu-Cudjoe and Delina Misgina, singing a song about ‘not getting distracted on the roads’. Peter Sandor and 9BM won a prize for their creativity.

Overall, Hinde House came second for our contributions. The students then posed for pictures with the celebrities.

The Road Safety Team contacted us afterwards to say how impressed they were with the enthusiasm and confidence of our students.[Mrs Greenwood]

Hurdles, hoops and ladders – not your average maths lesson! I believe we learn more effectively when our brain and whole body are active. A recent maths lesson saw children jump over a hurdle, climb a ladder and slip through a hoop before answering a question. Did being active help? I think so, but why not try it yourself? Ask your child a few questions as they walk to school.[Mr McDermott]

On 13th June, Hinde House students finished in the top 8 of their events at the District Athletics competition at Woodburn Road. They have successfully qualified for the City Championships on the 3rd July. These students represented the school in a positive way and now have the chance to be selected for their City. As a PE Department, we couldn’t be more proud! Well done everyone for taking part and thanks to those who came to support.

The u12 rounders team had their first win of the season on Wednesday, 13th June, against Parkwood School. It was a great fixture, with plenty of positive attitudes and rounders scored. Well done![Miss Warren]

A group of twelve students from Year 9 were offered the opportunity to work with Sheffield Sharks on a project to help them engage with school. A basketball player, Mackie, came in to school for six weeks to work on creating a media piece on himself and aspirations to go into Higher Education. At the end of the six weeks, the students were invited to a Sheffield Sharks basketball match and had the chance to present awards to the players at the end of the game. The students were really inspired by the whole programme and saw that a university degree can help you in lots of different ways.
