“But my last 3 years, specially my last 2 years at school, I
would have thought 80% at least of what I learnt, I taught
myself.”
Vision of our Founders | Brad Drever
• “What I learnt was by research”
• “So you set additional work for yourself privately”
•“I’ve always had in my mind this third, third, third.”

Developing the Self-Directed
Learner | Lucas Bedell
• The Assignment

• The Study
• Developing a Growth Mindset
• Carol Dweck outlines the difference between a growth and fixed mindset; the fixed mindset is where an individual believes that character, intelligence and creative ability are fixed and can’t be changed in a meaningful way. Being praised for achievement and avoiding failure at all costs maintains a sense of being skilled or smart.
• A growth mindset welcomes challenge and isn’t afraid of failure or making mistakes as they see them as part of the learning process and as a springboard for further growth.
• The SDL Spectrum: There are many different types of self-directed learning. The different forms exist on a spectrum that range from low-degrees of self-direction to high degrees of self-direction.
Developing the Self-Directed
Learner | Lucas Bedell
The big question: ‘how do we develop self-directed learners?’• Self-direction can be difficult
• Some of our students do not yet possess all of the necessary skills to think critically or explore academic topics on their own.
• We need to consider how to gradually build their skills to encourage greater learning independence.
• A big component of SDL is recognizing our roles as teachers and how this can impact the SDL learning experience. We will not be able to build an SDL culture in our classrooms until we identify the type of role we are playing now and the type of role that we are striving for.
• The element of choice• Students need to be given choices in the types of activities they complete, as well as the strategies they use to attain knowledge.
• Students may choose to investigate a topic in a variety of ways and each product may look completely different to the others—this is ok.
• Learning does not occur in the same way for every student, so why should the process and product be the same?
• As well, why should this be different for teachers in how they pursue professional development? To be supportive of the culturechange involved here we need to be modelling best practices.
• Small steps are great • Relinquishing our roles as 'formal instructors' and becoming 'learning facilitators.'
Diagnostic Testing | Ben Costa
NWEA MAP
• Aims to provide a teacher friendly
• Norm referenced diagnostic analysis of what our students know and where they need to develop in Math and Literacy
• Provides students with clear & measurable academic goals
Reading and Math diagnostic Tool that takes one hour for each content area or Math and Reading
Provides data that informs instructional practices targeted at every individual student in grade 3 through 12
Enables us to have an apples to apples measurement of where our students are at the beginning and at the end of each year
Teacher Academy | Lucas Bedell
• Cohort 3 of the first three Magic Weaver Induction Programs has finished
• Positive feedback
• Hiccups with technology in Cohort 1 and Mother Nature playing a role in cohort 2's arrival things have been great.
• Grand Opening was on March 9th
• Existing Magic Weaver Induction Program has been rolled out to all Sterling staff to equally positive reviews
• The intention moving forward is to make use of data from our classroom observation sheet to develop modules to support staff in areas of strength, interest, and need. At which point staff may self-direct their professional learning through our new LMS, Canvas.
Teacher Academy | Lucas Bedell
• The Teacher Academy will be the go-to point for all Sterling-endorsed professional development going into next year as we unveil a new policy and tracking system that will render the current format obsolete.
• We also wish to call on existing experts in various fields, such as VC teaching, to assist us with developing excellent models for all to experience.
• Aim next year is to have a regular all-Sterling Senior Educational Leadership Team meeting at the Academy for staff in leadership positions across all Regions. These sessions will be run by the EDs in consultation with the Academy at our World Class facility at the Mossley Campus.
• Teacher Academy will be branding and offering staff the most important Sterling-led event in the history of our organization
• All questions about Teacher Academy go to [email protected]

• Plan for Implementation:
• Communicate the FLL challenge during morning announcements.
• We will the students know that all 4th -8th grade students will have this opportunity to partake if they are committed.
• The students will need to raise the 900 dollars themselves or get a sponsor to pay for it.
• The students will need to reach out to a teacher, local community member to get a lead teacher and an assistant teacher. This program is done outside of the
school day and the school will take no responsibility for the coordination of the meetings. This coordination will be done by the lead teacher to the local
community.
• This will need to be complete by April 30th to allow for the lead teacher to sign-up for the upcoming event and order the parts.
• The lead teacher will be fully responsible to follow and meet all guidelines and timelines.
• This will also be communicated via the staff update, Biweekly journal, and morning announcements. Throughout the season we will give updates on what the
students are doing.
• Challenges
• The students will partake in a Local Sterling wide challenge for all teams that are participating.
• This will be setup by a board including myself, a NLT member, and a representative from each Region. We will follow the guidelines of the FLL.
• The challenge will take place during the official tournament season at a time where there are no tournaments taking place.
• The students will also take place in the official FLL Tournament. The official season will end once the team has been eliminated. – regional,
national, or global round.
• If a team shall win money that team can make a determination on how they want to spend the money.
• All students that partake in the FLL challenge will get recognized at the Third Quarter Recognition of Excellence Ceremony for their
dedication for excellence.
