MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Sacred Heart Parish is to be the spiritual focal point for the Catholic Christian community in our portion of the Diocese of Des Moines. This community:

Believes and proclaims that Jesus Christ is Lord;

Calls its people to experience and put into practice the love of Jesus Christ;

Draws its people into the social and spiritual life of the parish so that each has a sense of belonging;

Seeks to help its members take on the "mind of Christ" through prayer, study and worship;

Uses and returns the gifts and talents God has given; Is itself a sign calling its members to hear and respond in ministry to the spiritual and temporal needs of people within the parish and beyond.

Pastoral

Care

I found these Advent reflections from the Catholic Health Association inspiring. I hope you find them inspiring also and that they will help you prepare emotionally and spiritually for the coming of Jesus.

By Turning, Turning, We Come ‘Round Right Most of us are aware that as we begin this season of Advent, we begin a new year, a new cycle in our liturgical observance. We begin to tell the story of God’s action in our history by turning back to promises of old, promises fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. This new cycle is one of many we experience in the course of our lives – new calendar years, new academic years, new budget years, new years marked by birthdays and anniversaries. Each of these cycles causes us to look back as well as forward. Back to assess where we have been, to understand the meaning of our life experiences. And forward with hope that our past learning will enable us to grow into more faithful people. It was perhaps this wisdom that caused the ancient Romans to invoke their god Janus, depicted with two faces, one facing forward, the other back, at times of transitions and new beginnings. The scripture selection for the first Sunday of Advent, from the prophet Isaiah, recognizes a need for something new. The prophet sees that things are not as they should be. God appears to be distant and people have chosen a path for themselves that is not life giving. “Would that you might meet us doing right, that we were mindful of you in our ways!” Isaiah exclaims. He sees himself on the threshold of new possibilities. Let us put ourselves in Isaiah’s place for a moment. Where is the tension in our lives right now that fuels a need for change? Our work place, our personal lives? Does this tension place us on the threshold of something new? Do we risk falling backward by not embracing this moment? Can we cross this threshold with the confidence expressed by Isaiah as he wrote, “No ear has ever heard, no eye has ever seen, any God but you doing such deeds for those who wait for him.” The old Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts” offers a clue and hope that if we just make the first move and continue to move with confidence, we will end up in the place we ought to be.

Encontré estas reflexiones del Adviento de la página del Catholic Health Association inspirantes. Espero que usted lo encuentre inspirante también y que le ayude a preparar emocionalmente y espiritualmente para la venida de Jesucristo.

en Ingles, By Turning, Turning, We come ‘Round Right

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free 'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,

And when we find ourselves in the place just right, 'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gained, To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed,

To turn, turn will be our delight, Till by turning, turning we come 'round right.

WHAT IS NEW IN CFF

Growing in knowledge and faith as a Catholic does not end when we become adults, rather, it should continue throughout our life. This growth becomes even more important when we become parents and hold the hands of our own children. Parents are the first and primary educators of our young people. We are here to support parents at all stages of spiritual growth for children.

Please watch our calendar as it appears in the bulletin each week as a reminder of the many events that are taking place.

FOR ALL—WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

JESSE TREE

In this season of giving, we ask Sacred Heart parishioners to stop by the Jesse Tree (twig bush) in the vestibule and select an ornament. Each ornament lists items requested by a parishioner who is homebound or in a nursing home. Many of them will receive no other gifts, so please buy the items listed on an ornament, wrap and firmly tape the ornament to your package and return under the tree by Friday, Dec. 17.

PRE-ORDER CHRISTMAS GOODIES

Skip the lines! Stop today after Masses at the Women’s Guild table in the gathering space or use the form in this bulletin to pre-order trays of holiday treats. You can pre-order 15 treats for $12 or 30 treats for $30. Your purchase allows the Guild to support more Sacred Heart and community ministries. Also, during the bake sale next weekend, we also will offer a $1 sugar cookie decorating station for kids. The bake sale will be held Saturday and Sunday, December 9 and 10 after Masses.

COLD AND FLU SEASON

It is that time of year again. Mindfulness of the health of others is greatly appreciated. If you have a cough or are just getting over a cold, or if you are susceptible to illness, please refrain from shaking hands during the Sign of Peace. During this time, we are acknowledging our communion together before we receive the Eucharist. It would be appropriate to smile and bow to those around you during this time of the Liturgy.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

If Sacred Heart School is closed due to snow or ice, Masses, Children’s Faith Formation classes and all meetings and choir rehearsals will also be cancelled. If it should clear off during the day, all of the above events will remain cancelled. Please tune in to a local radio or TV station for weather closing announcements. If school is DELAYED, 8:00 am Mass will be held at 8:00 am, as usual.

RCIA—RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

BECOMING CATHOLIC…HOW TO “GET MORE” OUT OF MASS. We continue with our series on how to better prepare yourself for Mass and be ready to participate in it as best you can. This week’s tip:

4. Actively seek Christ at Mass. There are several ways Christ is present at Mass. Christ is present most especially in the Eucharist, and most of us learned that Christ is also present in the person of the priest who leads us in prayer. Christ is also present in the Scriptures, so much so that when we hear them read aloud at Mass, we believe that it is Christ speaking. Last but perhaps most essentially, Christ is present in the people when they gather to sing and pray, for Jesus said, “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Mt 18:20).

This last place may be the hardest for us to see Christ readily. But to be a part of the church, we have to gather with others and learn to pray well with them, too, even if we don’t know them or even like them.

So look for Christ in someone new at Mass,

And look for Christ in someone you might not get along with. That may be the person sitting right next to you; or it might be that person at church who simply gets on your nerves that day. Try to see them as God sees them: as one of his own beloved children.

See Christ as you share the Sign of Peace. Look the person in the eye, and see in them Christ in disguise.

Look for Christ in what you see: a piece of artwork in the church you’ve never noticed before; the mother who makes the Sign of the Cross on her baby; the way the sunlight shines through a piece of stained glass.

Then listen for Christ in the Scriptures and homily, but also in the songs and prayers, in the silence and in the chatter of toddlers, in the voices of those who sing and pray with you.

Finally, seek Christ in what you do. When you make the Sign of the Cross, do so slowly, intentionally. When you genuflect or bow, stand, sit, or kneel, do so reverently and actively; that is, attend to what you’re doing and place your focus on what’s happening in the Mass at that moment. ADVENT AT SACRED HEART

NOVENA TO OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

Join us for a novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe. A novena is a 9 day prayer to obtain special graces, to implore special favors or make special petitions. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patron of the Americas and Saint Pope John Paul II entrusted the cause of life to her loving protection, especially the lives of children in danger of not being born. Our novena begins December 13 at 6pm each evening in the Gathering Space beside her statue. The novena will be said each evening in Spanish. On the final evening of the novena, December 12, we will begin at 5:30pm in the Parish Center and begin with the final novena and then continue with our Feast Day Celebration. Look for more details next week.

2018 HAITI MISSION

Have you thought about serving the least of our brothers and sisters through a mission? Our next mission to Haiti is March 1-8

Led by Father Michael Mitchell, LC, we will work alongside Mother Teresa’s order, the Missionaries of Charity, at their Children’s Home, their Hospital For the Dying and in other service. Daily Mass. Cost is $845, which includes accommodations, meals and all ground transportation. Individually secured airfare is additional.

If interested, please contact: [email protected]

A NOTE TO PARENTS

Relax! As Jesus said, “Let the children come to Me.” Bring your children to Mass. Sit near the front where they can see and hear. God put the wiggle in children, don’t feel like you have to suppress it in God’s House. All are welcome at Sacred Heart! Let them see you sing the songs, pray and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying YOU! If you have to leave Mass with your child, please feel free to do so, but please come back.

To the members of our Parish: a smile of encouragement is always welcome to parents with small, active children. The presence of children is a GIFT to the

Church. They are the future of our Faith!

NEW AREA FOR NURSING MOTHERS

We have added a glider rocker especially for nursing mothers. Follow the signs near the usher’s room down the stairs to the room just at the bottom which is also used as our bride’s dressing room. We choose this area so you will still be able to clearly hear all parts of the Mass.

DIAPER CHANGING TABLE

We have added a diaper changing table right next to the new glider rocker area. Thank you to all the parishioners that have donated towards improving our facilities for young families!

MOMS, DADS AND GRANDPARENTS:

Visit our Kid's Corner before Mass each week. It is located just outside the sanctuary under the Welcome Board. Let your children choose a "Children's Mass Book" or a "Seek and Find Card Pack" to keep them busy during Mass. Have your children help return them after Mass so they will be there for the next Mass. Thank you for bringing your children to Mass each week. ~Matthew 19:14
