RCIA—RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

BECOMING CATHOLIC…WHAT ARE THE RCIA SCRUTINIES? On

the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent we will celebrate the RCIA

scrutinies for the elect of our parish (those who are preparing for

baptism at the Easter Vigil). The scrutinies ―are rites for self-searching

and repentance and have above all a spiritual purpose. The scrutinies are

meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the

hearts of the elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright,

strong, and good. For the scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver

the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against

temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the way, the

truth, and the life. These rites, therefore, should complete the

conversion of the elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ

and to carry out their decision to love God above all.‖ (RCIA, n. 141)

The scrutinies begin after the homily, when the elect and their

godparents come forward and the elect are invited to kneel or bow in

prayerful silence as a sign of their inner spirit of repentance. This is

followed by intercessions for the elect. Afterward, the rite continues

with an exorcism. The exorcism is a set of prayers asking Christ to free

the elect from the effects of sin. They receive new strength in the

midst of their spiritual journey as they open their hearts to receive the

gifts of the Savior. Finally, the elect are dismissed as normal to reflect

more deeply upon the word of God which was proclaimed at Mass. The

Mass then continues with the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Please continue to hold our elect and candidates in prayer as they

journey toward the Easter sacraments. If you would like to know more

about becoming Catholic, please contact Casey Conner at

[email protected] or 515-225-6414 ext. 309.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE IN THE SANCTUARY

DURING LENT ….. Pieces that will form a quilt which will be on display on Palm Sunday

and Holy Thursday, will begin to appear in the front of the ambo. The

five countries that we are focusing on during our CRS Rice Bowl

Project will be depicted in these quilt squares.

Words from our Director of Art & Environment, Pam Douglas: ―The

quilt includes two symbols representing two ways of remembering the

poor. I chose the rice bowl symbol from the CRS box to represent

our hopes for everyone in their different situations to receive their

portion and cup. The next symbol used is the biblical block entitled

‗Children of Israel‘ symbolizing God‘s people while in exile and slavery.

This symbol fit for me because the people CRS are trying to help are

struggling with the many ways they are suffering or lacking in what

they need. The work CRS does is trying to help them break out of

their suffering and to help them find better ways to live. It is

through reading the Psalms that we are reminded that through

patience and trust in God we will see this happen. I found a prayer

that resonated with me and my understanding of what CRS hopes to

do for the poor:

Christ, who showed great compassion to the poor,

Give us compassion toward those in poverty.

Your wish is for all of your children to live with dignity,

with adequate food, shelter, health care and education.

Help us to take up your work as a community of faith

and guide us as we seek just solutions to the poverty in

our midst. Amen.‖

AROUND THE DIOCESE AND BEYOND

24 HOURS FOR THE LORD 24 Hours for the Lord is a direct initiative of Pope Francis, inviting

all to experience the mercy of the Lord through the sacrament of

reconciliation. St. Augustin‘s and Our Lady of the America‘s

churches will have an extended time set aside to make available the

celebration of penance/confession. The purpose is to tangibly

represent that God's mercy awaits all, day and night. The Lord

cares for us always.

Pope Francis wanted to highlight God's mercy during this Jubilee of

Mercy. "The reason for this initiative in the thinking of the Holy

Father is to tangibly communicate that the Father's mercy is

available around the clock and not at a specific, 'scheduled' time,'

said Bishop Richard Pates. We are concerned about all the sheep,

but want to indicate to those who have wandered far away that

God's mercy knows no bounds." Locations and times are below:

St. Augustin Church

545 42nd St., Des Moines

Friday, March 4, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Our Lady of the Americas Church

1271 E. 9th St., Des Moines

Wednesday, March 16 beginning at 5:30 p.m., concluding March

17 at 5:30 p.m.

♦ TRAPPIST CASKETS

We are the Trappist monks of New Melleray Abbey. Our vocation

is expressed in silent prayer, community liturgy and manual labor.

Simple living is one of the hallmarks of our life. We support

ourselves by the work of our hands. That work is planting, growing

and tending the trees that we prayerfully craft into fine wooden

caskets and urns. We view our work as a ministry—a corporal work of mercy. We

hope to impart a sense of sanctity into all that we make. ∙ We plant a tree as a living memorial to each recipient. ∙ Each casket and urn is blessed by one of our monks. ∙ We manage our 1200-acre forest as a sustainable, diverse woodland. ∙ Once our trees are milled, we hand-select every board. ∙ Trappist Caskets cost less than mass produced options. ∙ Available for immediate need, or as an advanced planning option. Please visit us online at www.trappistcaskets.com to learn more

about our ministry, see samples or order a catalog. You can also call

888-433-6934, toll free, for more information. Visitors to our

showroom are always welcome.

MASS IN SIGN LANGUAGE Parishioners who are deaf or hard of hearing are invited to Saint

Francis of Assisi Parish in West Des Moines, for Mass interpreted

in American Sign Language. Signed/Interpreted Masses are held

the second Sunday of each month at 9:30 am.

CATHOLIC TUITION ORGANIZATION (CTO) The CTO was established in 2006. It is a 501©3 charitable organization

and provides vital tuition assistance to qualified Iowa families thanks to

the tremendous generosity of our donors. When you donate, you help

bridge the affordability gap for children and families who want a Catholic

education but need tuition assistance. Your generous gift becomes

eligible for an Iowa state tax credit AND federal tax savings, and is one

of the most tax-efficient ways to leverage your charitable giving. Every

family that meets the income guidelines is guaranteed tuition assistance,

based on their financial need.

As an example, a $1,000 donation to CTO qualifies for a 65% Iowa Tax

Credit ($650), and a 28% Federal Tax Deduction ($280) [assuming

federal tax rate is 28% - consult your tax advisor to determine actual

savings], making the out of pocket expense only $70! It is easy to see

how even a small donation can make a significant impact on the life of a

family receiving this benefit.

For more information on whether you would qualify as a recipient, or how

to make a donation, visit www.ctoiowa.org.

SACRED HEART CHURCH · WEST DES MOINES, IA · PAGE 10

Te has puesto a pensar

cuando tiempo has perdido en cosas pasajeras? Pedro, Santiago, y Juan vieron
