FundraisingFundraising
Donations and SponsorshipsDonations and Sponsorships
This Center is a wonderful gift to all of our area Seniors. The grant from the Maria Reiner Senior Citi-
zens Fund by the Legacy Foundation got us here. We all knew that those funds would not last forever.
It is up to us to make sure that we do our part to keep it up and running financially. We depend on
donors and sponsors as well as members to meet our annual projected budget of approximately
$138,000.00. We welcome fundraising ideas and concepts. Please keep the MRC in mind for consid-
eration of future donations, sponsorships and endowments. Feel free to speak to me, Pam
Broadaway, one of our Advisory Board Members, or one of our Board of Directors, with any questions,
concerns, ideas and/or donations.

Thank You for All Who
“Feed the Pigs”!
Congratulations!!! The “Pig” donations are improving…...But so is our daily
attendance. In February our Pig funds averaged $27.85 per day . Our daily
membership averaged 146. That is less than 19 cents per day per member!
Your help is greatly appreciated. (The minimum donation per member per
day should be closer to 50 Cents.) We cannot continue with all our wonderful
refreshments without it. A HUGE “Thank You” to all who contribute!
Vial of Life
Vial of Life packages are available at
our registration desk. There are plen-
ty of extra “blue information sheets”
in the info rack near the front door.
Always remember to keep your medi-
cal & emergency info up to date.
Please show us your membership card when you sign in!

Daylight Savings Time
Trivia
Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday March 11that 1:59 am. So
don’t forget to turn your clocks forward an hour on Saturday night
BEFORE you go to bed! Did you know that the idea of daylight sav-
ings time was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 while he
was visiting Paris? It’s been an on again off again affair since the
1st law in 1918. There are many reasons that the time change was
proposed in the US; It was believed to increase voter turn-out, a
study by US Law Enforcement showed a reduction of violent crimes
by 10-13%, safer for Trick or Treaters, 1% reduction in traffic acci-
dents & fatalities., Energy savings benefits. Not just electricity.
There is a savings of 300,000 barrels of oil each year. Indiana was
always a “hot Bed” of controversy and a much divided state. Legis-
lators passed a law that implemented Daylight Saving Time
statewide beginning on April 2, 2006. Trains are challenged to stay
on schedule. When the clocks fall back one hour in October, all
Amtrak trains in the U.S. that are running on time stop at 2:00 a.m.
and wait one hour before resuming. Overnight passengers are
often surprised to wake and find that there trip just took an hour
longer than expected. At the spring Daylight Saving Time change,
trains instantaneously become an hour behind schedule at 2:00
a.m., but they just keep going and do their best to make up the
time. Hawaii and Arizona does not observe DST, except for the
Navajo Nation in Arizona, which does. However, the Hopi Reserva-
tion, which is entirely surrounded by the Navajo Nation, doesn’t
observe DST. This causes a donut-shaped area of Arizona that does
observe DST, but the “hole” in the center does not. Thus calling it
the “doughnut effect”. .The fire departments also use the time
change as a reminder to change the batteries in your smoke detec-
tors. Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday November 4th at
1:59am.

An Irish Blessing: As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never
point the wrong way! Submitted by: Helen Brooks
Carson Pirie Scott is having their annual “2 Day Community Day Event” on April 27th & 28th. Since 1999 they’ve raised $91
Million for organizations just like ours. Community Day is a unique opportunity for non-for-profit organizations, like us, to
raise money and increase their visibility in the community. It's a fun, rewarding event for all involved, at no cost to us or our
Center. It is SIMPLE…….. We have order and received 500 coupon booklets for this event. We will be selling them here for
$5.00 each. 100% of the cost comes directly back to us. Our goal is to raise $2500.00 The booklet includes a $10.00 off
coupon, as well as a tiered shopping pass for 20%/15%/10% off each regular or sale priced item, plus a 30% Early bird cou-
pon, valid 7am-10am on Saturday, April 28, plus merchandise offers: Customers must have the coupon to receive the spe-
cial pricing on these offers. And Exclusive Web Offers. Tri-Kappa has taken 50 books to sell. If you have family, friends,
neighbors, church members, etc., that you would like to sell to, please see Sue Miller. She will be happy to hook you up!
She has reserved a couple a days to sell coupon books at Carson's in the mall. She will need volunteers to help on those
days. Help us meet our goal!

Celebrate on Saturday March 17th. Saint
Patrick, who lived during the fifth century, is
the patron saint and national apostle of Ire-
land. Born in Roman Britain, he was kid-
napped and brought to Ireland as a slave at
the age of 16. He later escaped, but returned
to Ireland and was credited with bringing
Christianity to its people. In the centuries
following Patrick's death (believed to have
been on March 17, 461), Perhaps the most
well known legend is that he explained the
Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit)
using the three leaves of a native Irish clover,
the shamrock. The United States was actually
the first to hold a parade on March 17, 1762.
-In modern-day Ireland, St. Patrick's Day was
traditionally a religious occasion. In fact, up
until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that
pubs be closed on March 17. The Chicago
River has been dyed green every St. Patrick’s
Day since 1962. “Erin go Baugh”, Ireland
Forever!
