What is She Trying to Tell Me? Understanding Behavior as Communication | Eric Collett, Founder & Principal, A Mind For All Seasons

Humans cannot avoid communicating and everything we do communicates with those

around us. Most of what gets labeled as bad behavior from persons living with dementia is

nothing more than an attempt to communicate. This program helps participants develop

greater skill in understanding what those they serve are trying to say and how to respond.

Objectives include:

1. Develop greater understanding of the role of environment and context as influencers of behavior.

2. Recognize how declining cognitive functioning affects an individual’s perception and sense making abilities.

3. Learn strategies to be a better detective and figure out what is driving a person’s behavior.

During this Tabletop Exercise, we will be discussing hazards that may cause a facility or neighborhood to evacuate. We will focus on one incident that will cause an evacuation and discuss what your agency would be doing to take care of your residents/patients and staff. I encourage you to bring your agency current evacuation plans or review your plans prior to help you in your decision making during the exercise. My goal for this exercise is for you to:

• Explore events that may cause the evacuation of a healthcare facility or individual patient residence and discuss roles and responsibilities of staff during an evacuation

• Identify strengths and gaps in current plans and corrective actions to address potential gaps in planning and performance

• Learn what the Healthcare Coalition is and who to contact in your area

• Walk away with resources to conduct this exercise with your agency

Individuals are responsible for maintaining their own records of attendance to all IHCA educational events. It is recommended the attendee maintain a copy of the event program to provide detail of sessions offered at each event. ATTENTION ASSISTED LIVING ADMINISTRATORS "The Idaho Board of Residential Care Facility Administrators met on October 11, 2012 and discussed continuing education programs. Concerns were voiced about credit being given for tradeshows. This does not meet the requirements in Rule 401.02 that states the course must be relevant to residential care facility administration. The Board made a motion that credit will not be given for tradeshows, membership meetings, awards luncheons, or board meetings. The Board would appreciate your assistance is educating the administrators about which hours count." As you attend IHCA educational events, please keep in mind the requirements of your license to ensure you are participating in sessions that will help you meet Rule 401.02.
