Valentines Day—Wednesday 14 February 2018
It is easy for relationships with loved ones to become
routine and so the opportunities for dads to shine as role
models is sometimes missed around valentines day.
If you have girls - Your relationship with your
daughter is the first role model for her future
relationships. If you let her know she is valued, she is
far more likely to seek and find relationships with
those qualities later in her life. Valentine’s Day is a
good way to reinforce how much she means to you.
If you have boys—Valentine’s Day is a great time to demonstrate to him
how important it is to show affection. Perhaps a “covert mission” to make
or get something for his mum? Remember you are his first role model as to
what healthy relationships look like, and how a man should act towards
women.
DADVICE
YOU GOT THIS
"How do you make a tissue dance? Put a
little boogie in it!"
"5/4 of people admit that they’re bad with
fractions."
"What's Forrest Gump's password? 1forrest1"
"What do you call cheese that’s not yours? Nacho Cheese!"
Ok, we’ve survived Christmas, New Year,
School Holidays, family gatherings and the
harvest—that’s no mean feat!
Whether you’re a stay at home dad or working
flat out, February can be an odd month as we
relax back into school routines and regular life.
Check out how to make everyone including
you feel really special!

Science is all around us
Time to have a blast …. literally!
Pre school years and beyond are a journey of learning and discovery so what better time to introduce little ones to science? We’re not talking
dividing atoms or inventing a new propulsion system folks, no sir-ee, just good ole fashioned exploring that taps into natural curiosity
Roll up the sleeves …. We’re doing chemistry!
SANDBOX VOLCANO SUPPLIES Sandbox with sand, Water, Bicarbonate of soda, Vinegar, 16oz water bottle, Food dye (optional) *Add few drops of dish soap for an even foamier fizz-ing eruption! SANDBOX VOLCANO SET UP Fill water bottle about a third full with water (mix in optional food colouring). Add about 5 teaspoons of baking soda. Put the cap on until you are ready. Build a sand mountain around the bottle. Uncap the bottle. Pour a good amount, probably a cup of vine-gar into the bottle. Get out of the way and watch the huge eruption!
Ok? So what’s the science?
When the baking soda and the vinegar mix they form a gas called carbon dioxide which then produces the fizzing eruption. The shape of the container helps to shoot the eruption up higher because the gas is easily forced out and up due to the narrow opening.
This chemical reaction occurs because of an acid {the vinegar} mixing with a base {baking soda}. When the two combine the reaction takes place and the gas is created. https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/best-sandbox-volcano-eruption/

Left over candy canes? No Problem! Candy Cane Lollipops What you need: 12 Peppermint candy canes 200g white chocolate chopped Edible sprinkles 6 oven proof lolly sticks Cellophane bags & ribbons if giving as presents 1 Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line 2 baking sheets with baking
parchment. Arrange the candy canes in pairs on the trays, to make heart shapes. Put a lolly stick between each one, where they meet at the bottom. Put the trays in the oven and cook for 5 mins.
2 The candy canes should now be soft enough for you to carefully pinch to-gether where they join at the top and the bottom, around the stick. Be careful as the canes will be extremely hot, but work quickly or they will set and you won’t be able to pinch them together.
3 Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of barely simmering water, or in the microwave. Spoon the melted chocolate into the middle of the heart lollies, pushing it out to fill the spaces. Scatter over your choice of sprinkles, then leave to cool completely. When set, peel off the baking parchment, wrap in cellophane bags and tie with a ribbon to give as a gift.
Get the kids in the kitchen
Calzone Hearts For the dough: 1 pkg yeast, 1 Tbsp sugar, 1 cup warm water, 1 tsp salt, 3 Tbsp olive oil, 1 ¾ cup white flour, 1 ¼ cup whole wheat flour Filling: Mozzarella cheese, pasta sauce, ham or pepperoni
Combine yeast, sugar and warm water and let set for 5 minutes. Mix remain-ing ingredients and then add yeast mixture. Let dough rise, in a warm place, for about 1-2 hours, until double in size. Roll out a small portion of the dough at a time, cutting two equal sized hearts. Fill middle with a thin layer of sauce, ham/pepperoni, and cheese. Add another heart to top and crimp the edges together with a fork. Set on baking tray. Bake at 400 for 10-15 minutes until lightly browned. Cool for 10-mins before servicing and check filling is cool enough before giving to kids.

Kids Craft Corner Ok just hunting around for crafts to put into this months newsletter was exciting enough and we haven't even made them! Enjoy, with love from us!
Lets start with this cute number. White paper, paint and a marker pen is all that’s needed to make these special thumb print cards for mum or dad.
Or how about some red card, white paper and red paint for a handprint card to show pops or granny how much they’re loved.
Did You Know?
There are around 200
different owl species.
Owls are active at
night (nocturnal).
A group of owls is
called a parliament.
Valentine Owl What You Need: Dessert size paper plate; red and pink paper or card 3 red foam hearts 2 large googly eyes; black pen; glue; scissors. How to Make It: Pre-trace a long half-heart shape for the wings and two wide heart shapes (pink slightly smaller than red) for the children to cut out and unfold. Cut apart long wings and place one on either side of the paper plate body. Glue pink heart inside red heart and glue head to body. Add eyes and punched heart beak. Stick on foam hearts for feet. Have child right name or add a message to white plate.

Ward of Wisdom!
Darcy Ward, Occupational Therapist here at Amity Health gives us an insight of how we can help kids
manage emotions
Love and other emotions
Helping your child to recognise and understand emotions and feelings will support their emotional development and help them engage with others appropriately. Being able to recognise, understand and reacting to feelings will allow them to navigate social situations, deal with challenges, make friends, problem solve and communicate effectively.
2 simple ways to incorporate
emotional recognition into daily life
Modelling: Children learn lots from what they see. So try to incorporate good emotional awareness in your day to help
demonstrate what it looks like to recognise, understand and react to emotions and feelings. Be sure to cover both good and not-so-good emotions and feelings as well as how you
would effectively deal with them.
Noticing characters feelings and emotions: When reading books with your child use the character’s feelings and
emotions as an opportunity to chat about them. This way it is in context and about someone they are interested in. You
could also use their favourite TV show, or movie characters as examples of people experiencing emotions (good and
not-so-good).
If you notice your child has difficulty dealing with emotions these things may help: finding the trigger, finding a quiet
space to unwind, find a way to release some of the energy from big emotions like feeling angry, sad, overwhelmed e.g.
play dough, taking 5 deep breaths, tight hugs.
Cheers, Darcy
